YMMV / Linked Universe

Go To

  • Adorkable: A few of the Links qualify. Wind for being a Cheerful Child Genki Guy. Four is a Pint-Sized Powerhouse and has a few cool abilities (such as getting even smaller and splitting into four heroes.)
    • Time's relationship with Malon also qualifies.
    • Sky is an all around Nice Guy who has a small sassy streak as well as a wholesome relationship with his Zelda.
  • Ascended Meme: In the Q and A, Jojo had confirmed the meme of Four being 4'4 as canon.
  • Awesome Art: Jojo is clearly an experienced artist as all of their panels have amazing shading and lighting as well as a recognizable style. The amount of care put in the character designs alone is telling.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Wild, he's one of the most popular links and tends to be discussed the most, especially in regards to his trauma and inferiority complex. However there are a lot of fans who dislike the amount of attention he receives and feels that he often takes away from other character's chances to shine. This notion has gotten even more intense after Four's first time splitting on-panel was shifted away from to focus on Wild's feelings.
  • Broken Base: Sunset part 9 came with an explanation of how Jojo believes Four works, dismantling the extremely popular, borderline Word of Dante Fanon that Four has DID, a System, and has inner conversations with his alts. To say it sparked controversy in the fandom would be an understatement.
    • Many people took offense to how Jojo put the word System in quotes, believing that Jojo was mocking people with Systems and discrediting them. Others did not realise there was an issue in the first place. Jojo apologized about offending people shortly afterwards, citing Values Dissonance as the reason behind their phrasing, as well as being blunt with words and assuming that "System" is an uncommon term (which would be the case in a country other than America or a cultural background unfamiliar with proper DID terminology). She also changed the note to remove the quotation marks.
      • The apology itself has sparked a split in the fandom. Some have forgiven Jojo, saying that Poor Communication Kills are understandable considering text is not the best medium for conveying emotion, and mistakes happen. Others refuse to forgive Jojo, and a third party elects to stay neutral saying that people who don't have DID do not have the right to accept or reject the apology as it is not addressed to them.
    • People also have different stances to the explanation itself. Many consider Jojo stating that Four doesn't have DID to be extremely insensitive and disrespectful of those who do. This camp is particularly prominent in Tumblr, and urge people with Systems to speak up. The Instagram fandom on the other hand is accepting of this explanation and happy that Four doesn't have DID.
    • People who actually have DID and Systems are also split on this. Some are on the "Jojo is disrespecting us" camp, while others agree with Jojo pointing out the romanticization of DID in fiction which disregards that its source is intense trauma, as well as the inaccurate portrayal of the disorder.
    • There is also the camp that's more bothered by the dismissal of the popular Fanon. Some have no issue with it and choose to respect Jojo's stance on it, and believe that Jojo is entitled to her own headcanons like any other fanfic author. Others blatantly and vocally opt to disregard Jojo's statements specifically out of spite, with some going as far as to claim that Jojo is attacking her own fandom. There's a third camp that points out that Jojo never claimed issue with Four's fanon portrayal (in regards to Recursive Fanfiction, she only ever asked we don't ship the Links with each other) and that everyone is free to write their Linked Universe fanfics as they wish.
    • In light of all of this, part of the fandom has greater respect for Jojo (especially after the apology), part believes that Jojo is fine as long as she is held accountable, and a third camp calls for Fanon Discontinuity (this last part also points out some years old posts by Jojo like their apparent mockery of the Furry Fandom when stating that Twilight isn't one). Oh, and there's also a group calling THOSE people out for doing the tumblr equivalent of condemning someone for a 10-year-old tweet.
  • Creator's Favourite: Time. Jojo has stated that specifficaly "Baby Link" was her favourite (Young Link from Ocarina of Time)
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Malon only appears in one major arc (and a few side-comics), but she appears so often in LU-related fanworks that outsiders would be forgiven for thinking she was outright traveling with the Links. It helps that she's one of these in Zelda canon, as does The Reveal that she and Time are Happily Married in this universe (which likely endeared her further to shippers).
    • The Postman. Mostly for his determination to deliver Wind's mail.
    • To a larger degree, Shadow from the Four Swords manga. His popularity was so large that Jojo said in a Q and A that they felt they had to do something with Shadow because of how much everyone loved him.
  • Fandom-Specific Plot:
    • Wild being the last one to join the group, often making it as difficult as humanly possible due to his trust issues. Alternatively, he joins easily but doesn't warm up to anyone for a long time, also because of said trust issues.
    • Warriors knows Marin and she with Legend get their reunion.
    • Fics where the Four reveal they can split into four are pretty common.
  • Fanfic Fuel: The group meeting a Link (often Wild) and reacting to their habits.
    • Four's secret of splitting into Four people getting out is also a pretty common plot in Four-centric fics.
  • Fan Nickname: All of the Links (except for Sky) are never referred to the nicknames given on their pages In-Universe, as the heroes don't know that much about each other.
    • The group is called "the chain".
    • The Shadow (assumed to be Dark Link) is often called "Dink".
    • The various Zelda's are also given nicknames on their own by the fans. Sky's is called "Sun", Four's "Dot", Time's "Lullaby", Legend's "Fable", Hyrule's "Dawn" and "Aurora" (since there are two of them), Twilight's "Dusk", Warriors' "Artemis", and Wild's "Flora". Tetra gets to stay Tetra.
  • Fountain of Memes: Legend due to his Deadpan Snarker tendencies. Especially in his bunny form.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Wind's wacky expressions.
    • Four's association with the number 4.explanation  Also having him freeze up completely when someone asks him his favorite color.explanation
    • Wild's habit of breaking weapons and his status as an arsonist.
    • Warriors being a pretty boy who spends large amounts of time on his hair or makeup is also common.
    • According to some of the fandom, Twilight yodels.explanation
    • People often have the idea that Time is a secret gremlin who enjoys playing tricks on the chain.
    • Hyrule's tendency to get lost has also become a meme.
    • THE POSTMAN IS A TRAITOR explanation
    • Catboy Twi explanation
    • "I hope jojo doesn't see this" or "I'm sorry Jojo" explanation
    • Twiddies explanation
  • Sailor Earth: A portion of the fandom likes to make fics or concept art of what the hero of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks would be like in the chain. Another portion does the same for a younger Time from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
