YMMV / Carry On Up the Khyber

Go To

  • Broken Base: So... is this film the best Carry On movie of all time?
  • Common Knowledge: Many people claim that the famous dinner party scene was a One-Take Wonder, when according to actors in the film such as Angela Douglas and Julian Holloway, it took three days to complete the scene.
  • Designated Hero: The British characters are supposed to be the heroes, but they're always messing up and making Princess Jelhi save them. Most of the movie can basically be described as: "1) British character does something foolish; 2) The Indians plan their vengeance; 3) Princess Jelhi comes to the rescue".
  • Poor Man's Substitute: Roy Castle fills in for Jim Dale.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Ginger is played by Peter Gilmore, who would later be best known for playing Captain James Onedin in The Onedin Line.
    • The Khasi's first wife is played by Wanda Ventham, who would later be best known for playing Colonel Lake in UFO (1970).
    • The sporran soldier is played by Johnny Briggs, who would later be best known for playing Mike Baldwin in Coronation Street.
  • Signature Scene: The dinner party scene, where the British characters keep a Stiff Upper Lip (with the exception of Brother Belcher, who has a nervous breakdown at the table) and ignore the shelling of the residency coming from the Khasi's forces.
  • The Woobie: Private Widdle. He didn't want to be in the army, so you've got to feel sorry for him when Sergeant Major MacNutt constantly picks on him, but he also got the group in trouble after letting his hormones get the better of him in the Royal Harem when he could've just tried to Think Unsexy Thoughts.
  • Woolseyism: From the Hungarian dub:
    • The Khasi warning Princess Jelhi of the dangers of a Man in a Kilt changes his warning from them flashing their bayonets, to them sinking their bayonets into her.
    • Brother Belcher's final line becomes "These are the fools to tie up, believe me".
