The game follows you, a young man fresh out of high school who lives with his widowed father. The story begins the morning after your 18th birthday, where you wake up in a park not remembering anything about last night. You quickly discover that your body is not normal when you arm stretches to an unnatural length. On the way back to your house, you remember what happened last night. The girlfriend of one of your friends slipped you a pill and took you to the park, where you meet into two Lovecraftian horrors. You try to run from them but there's no escape, and one of them injects you with something that causes your body to break apart and melt into a goo. That's all you remember.

Now you need to get a handle on your powers while dealing with all the usual college stuff. Jocks and cheerleaders, making new friends and hanging out with old ones. Maybe those new powers of yours can come in handy for that.

It's not all fun and games, though. Monsters like the ones that infected you are starting to show up in the news, killing and kidnapping people, and it's only a matter of time before you run into others like yourself. You need to keep your identity secret and get stronger if you're going to survive.

This game provides examples of:

  • Absurdly Spacious Sewer: The sewers are a great place for monsters to hide, away from the prying eyes of humans and superhumans.
  • Art Evolution: The art goes from being an acquired taste to genuinely good.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Several characters call their attacks.
  • The Casino: Where you, Alice and Michael go to win an unspecified prize in a poker gamer.
  • The City: The vast majority of the story takes place in an unnamed city.
  • City Noir: Where Michael is sent to live for a year by his father to toughen him up and prepare him for life as a member of a crime family.
  • Crystal Weapon: Laurie can create crystal darts, knives, and swords. Justified as these crystals can infect any living thing they scratch, slowly turning it into crystal.
  • Jerk Jock: Jared is the star player on the college's basketball team and the son of a wealthy businessman. He's also cheating on his girlfriend with just about every attractive woman he sees, including her friend, and bullying anyone he dislikes.
  • Older Than They Look: Reaching a certain evolution level halts aging, so some H.E.R.O. agents look like they're in their twenties, thirties or forties, when they're actually decades older.
  • Poisoned Weapons: You sometimes use tentacles coated in the venom of multiple venomous creatures.
  • Plasma Cannon: An incredibly heavy rifle invented out of monster parts that shoots pink plasma.
  • Shapeshifter Weapon: You can turn your body into various weapons; swords, spiked tentacles, maces, axes, spearguns, and claws.
