Trivia / Striptease

Go To

  • Ability over Appearance: Burt Reynolds was nowhere near what Andrew Bergman had envisioned, and only auditioned him to humour him because of how enthusiastic he was. By the end of the audition, he had won them over.
  • Awesome, Dear Boy: Two hundred extras turned up for the striptease sequence, despite the low pay offered, for a chance to see Demi Moore in the nude.
  • Box Office Bomb: Budget, $40-50 million. Box office, $33,109,743 (domestic), $113,309,743 (worldwide).
  • Creator Killer: The film derailed the career of director Andrew Bergman, who only made one more movie four years later.
  • Creator-Preferred Adaptation: Carl Hiassen, who wrote the book, loved the movie and thought it was true to what he had written.
  • Doing It for the Art: In contrast to the below, Burt Reynolds took a pay cut and lobbied very hard to be in the film.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Demi Moore exercised a lot and took up yoga to prepare for the role. She also did her research by visiting actual strip clubs in New York City, California and Florida and learning from real strippers.
  • Missing Trailer Scene: The trailer contains a low angle shot of Shad and Urbana Sprawl that's from the original ending before it was re-shot (see below).
  • Money, Dear Boy: Demi Moore was paid $12.5 million to star in the film, a record for a Hollywood actress at the time. When the media got wind of this, they started nicknaming her "Gimme Moore". She was granted this paycheque because she was the only major star willing to appear nude.
  • Real-Life Relative: Erin's daughter Angela is played by Demi Moore's real-life daughter Rumer Willis. This helped for a scene where Angela sees Erin performing, as the actress put it...
"[W]e don't shame the body, we encourage the body as something beautiful and natural, and my children bathe with me, and I walk around naked."
  • Real Life Writes the Hairstyle: Demi Moore was called back to re-shoot some scenes, which she did in between filming G.I. Jane. As she had shaved her head for that, she had to wear a wig to match her original hairstyle.
  • Star-Derailing Role: In spite of breaking records for her pay, this film marked the beginning of the end of Demi Moore's career. After this and G.I. Jane the next year, her credibility now ruined, she took time off from acting.
  • Typecasting: Rena Riffel played a stripper in the very similar Showgirls the previous year, which Striptease was often compared to.
  • Uncredited Role: Michael Jordan and Bill Bradley go uncredited for their cameos.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The original ending featured Dilbeck becoming violent and trying to rape Erin, but negative reactions from test audiences saw it being re-shot to make it funnier.
    • Michael Caine, Gene Hackman and Donald Sutherland turned down the role of David Dilbeck.
