Trivia / Pirates SMP

Go To

  • Acting for Two:
    • cc!Seapeekay plays both his character of the same name and the Recruitment Officer.
    • While out of character, cc!Owen (and occasionally cc!Apo) have played the Moon God as server admins.
    • MrMadSpy primarily plays the Sun God, but has also played "Pirate Tim", alias Nocturnus, in the Halloween event, and Saffrie in the finale.
    • Other than its character, Krow also voices the Nayan Armada commanders Miria and Javi in a flashback animatic.
    • Multiple server members who are inactive during a lore stream, whether it be someone not involved in a character's personal lore or someone whose character is already dead, have been known to play Cultist characters. For example, cc!Apo played one of the Cultists involved in Will's character lore finale, and cc!Acho played the "Insane Cultist" Ohca in the finale.
  • Ascended Fanon: In response to a stream chat message, cc!Eloise has tentatively confirmed that her character uses 'Jones' as a family name pseudonym during her time on the Faction Isles.
  • Author Phobia: cc!Will's dislike of most birds and overall animal preferences are transferred to his character.
  • Blooper: Since most of the series is first filmed live on streams then cut down into episodic highlights (if they are adapted at all), there are many behind-the-scenes bumps in the recording process that don't make it into the YouTube videos.
    • Near the end of Day 1, Cruppy accidentally and briefly "turned into a woman", showing that Cruppy is played by an admin and isn't a bot.
    • From the start of the SMP, there have been many technical difficulties regarding server mechanisms, resulting in bloopers moments plaguing various livestreams, such as the Great Thrasher showing up way sooner than intended when a player is in the water. This, of course, isn't including ones resulting from human error, like creators accidentally joining the wrong voice-chat group.
    • The Denholm brothers' reconciliation and unofficial Dipper retrieval quest on Day 3 had to restart twice, first because Acho had some issues with setting the right music for the scene, and second because a zombie interrupted the conversation and had to be killed. And then Krow shows up halfway through the conversation, gets sent a private message that lore is happening, and has to find the flimsiest excuse to remove himself from the scene.
    • On Day 8, Michela's dad walks in on her livestream to show her what he got from Costco, and Michela has to shoo him out.
    • On Day 29, while Acho is trying to have an emotional monologue to the stars, he's interrupted twice — first by a random squid flying off the Town Center docks, then by Michela pretending to be a fish while looking for the other Nightingales who were off to visit the Bounty Hall.
    • On Day 32, Cruppy gets mauled to death by the Sewer Gator; Acho, who witnessed the whole thing, has to convince stars seagulls that they just had a collective vision.
    • A particularly notable one is that halfway through the server-wide Halloween Episode on Day 93, the entire server crashes just after a climatic scene, booting everyone from the game.
    • On Day 130, after the end of Shep's lore segment, the death message "Smajor1995 was impaled by a stalagmite" pops up. It's later explained that Acho and Scott were filming a cinematic for their character lore finale at the time and that it was either a mistimed take or cc!Apo trolling them using commands.
    • The server crashes from technical difficulties multiple times throughout the finale on Day 134, once even halfway through a battle due to Scott's huge Kangacrew. The Cultist characters also launch an attack between the two battle takes before the cast are ready, forcing everyone to fend off the cannonfire.
  • The Cast Showoff: cc!Martyn used to be involved in student radio, and has his character start an (anachronistic) offshore radio station in his journalistic pursuits.
  • The Danza:
    • As standard for a Minecraft SMP, the characters typically share a name with the content creators they're respectively portrayed by, or go by a similar alias.
    • The Cultist leading the attack on the Faction Isles in the finale on Day 134 is named 'ohca', i.e. 'Acho' backwards. Averted later in the battle when they're renamed 'InsaneCultist' in-game.
  • Descended Creator: Many of the server admins play NPC characters as well as working behind the scenes, most notably Mark MrMadSpy playing the Sun God.
  • Directed by Cast Member: POWCreations owners Apokuna and OwengeJuice both play POV characters in the series, on top of testing out server mechanisms and working on parts of the worldbuilding. It's also for this reason that Owen as a character doesn't get involved with the banana stock market, because his content creator counterpart knows when it goes up or down and him participating would be considered unfair.
  • Enforced Method Acting: None of the SMP members knew Aimsey and Guqqie were dying on Day 1 other than the two creators themselves, so they found out at the same time as the viewers and their reactions are entirely genuine.
  • Executive Veto: After the Kangacrew crashed the server in the finale on Day 134, cc!Scott originally wanted to keep two of them on the battlefield with him for Take Two of the battle, but cc!Owen vetoes this, not wanting to risk another server crash.
  • Fake Brit: cc!Will is American and usually speaks with a Midwestern American accent, but his character counterpart has a mostly British accent (with a hint of Australian).
  • Fan Community Nicknames: On Tumblr, the Pirates SMP fandom uses the tag "Scurvyblr" as a designation to avoid conflicts in tagging on the site.
  • Fandom Nod: During the "Final Wishes" lore event on Day 112, Owen brings up the possibility of the Denholm parents being Cultists, a fairly popular theory discussed on the POWCreations Discord server (and ultimately jossed).
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation:
    • Several of the characters have canonical heights, but this is not apparent in-game as all players use the standard 180cm (about 5'11") avatar; their heights generally have to be confirmed by Word of God.
    • According to Seapeekay's Behind the Scenes video for SMP Launch Day, the Faction Representatives don't exist in-game; the books listing everyone's potential faction were already written and whenever he "consults" the Representatives, he's just there to check and collect the books. However, since his Recruitment Officer NPC's instruction book directs him on what to say during the improv roleplay, the Representatives likely do exist in-universe as Unknown Characters.
    • In the finale, at least 10 members of the Kangacrew are killed off in-game between the two takes of the Battle on the Faction Isles using admin commands. This is because their presence has caused the entire server to crash in the first take, then other players to crash again the moment they log into the game later. However, despite the death messages, cc!Scott has reassured his chat that in-universe, they're still alive and kept in the museum.
  • He Also Did: POWCreations, composed of Apokuna and OwengeJuiceTV, has also hosted Rats SMP from October 2022 to January 2023, which is also not only heavily modded, but roleplay-heavy as well.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Like other Twitch-based livestreamed series, since Twitch VODs are deleted two months after they are livestreamed, many of the content creators don't archive their VODs or re-upload them to YouTube, and even fewer creators are committed to adapting the SMP into YouTube episodes, the fans are left responsible for preserving the SMP's contents by unofficial VOD re-uploads and recaps.
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content: The NPCs introduced from Day 57 onward are based on submissions from POWCreations' high-tier Patreon supporters.
  • Production Nickname: According to the creators' post-canon Q&A livestreams:
    • Mahara (from Acho's backstory) was originally named 'Valen', like cc!Acho's real-life friend who voiced him, before the final cut.
    • Kuervo's brother Alex was named 'Theo' before the name was changed for being "too English" for a Spanish character.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: If a content creator involved in the SMP is LGBTQ+, it is generally assumed that their character counterpart is also LGBTQ+ by the nature of Minecraft roleplays, with the character's queer identity and preferred pronouns matching that of the creator unless stated otherwise.
  • Real-Life Relative: cc!Owen and Luanne/Lemonthyne, one of the SMP's main artists and voice-actor for her Patreon-submitted NPC, got engaged a couple of months after the SMP ended.
  • Reality Subtext: On Day 45, upon visiting the Sabertooth tavern for the first time, Martyn remarks on how its architectural style resembles that of Ros' castle and wonders if her taste in architecture was influenced by her life there before the Isles. Out-of-universe, cc!Ros built the Sabertooth tavern, and NoName decided to co-opt her build into the SMP and its storylines.
  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: The Day 93 Halloween event has to be cut short and there are only two rounds in the boss battle against the main antagonist in the recording. The reasoning behind it is simple: cc!Martyn was recording Secret Life immediately after the event and the cast had to work around the time constraint so he wouldn't be late, especially considering the technical difficulties that occurred halfway through the lore stream. In the end, the YouTube adaptations just cut it down to the first round.
  • Throw It In!: Martyn's comment on Day 93 about having to leave the other rats behind at the end of the Rats SMP is reportedly an ad-lib because he never had an actual "old crew", nor did he claim to have one with regard to his fake backstory, so "it felt like the most appropriate shift".
inthelittlewood: I didn't realise how sad / tragic it sounded until I saw chat explode a few seconds later LOL
  • Tribute to Fido: As with just about every other Minecraft series he's in, Scar's feline companion Jellie is based on her real-life counterpart in appearance, given her addition to the game in the 1.14 "Village and Pillage" update.
  • Voice-Only Cameo: A handful of creators have made voice-only appearances as other characters:
    • Nukeri (a guest on the Rats SMP) voices Will's father in his lore finale.
    • Pyroscythe voices the mysterious figure/Acho's conscience during two of his individual character lore streams.
    • Jimmy SolidarityGaming (who was part of the Rats SMP cast) voices Sausage's uncle, Capitán Santana in his epilogue.
    • Valen, cc!Acho's real-life friend, voices Mahara from his character backstory, and was originally written as The Danza in the drafts.
  • What Could Have Been: Now has its own page.
  • Word of Gay:
    • Prior to the start of the SMP, Owen has confirmed that his character on the server is pan and uses he/her pronouns. Later during the SMP, his character is additionally confirmed to not be on the aromantic or asexual spectrums, unlike his content creator counterpart.
    • Bek has stated that her character on the SMP is aromantic asexual.
    • Martyn has confirmed in August that his character on the server is pan.
    • In an unusual inversion of this, both Kyle and Krow have stated that their characters are straight, with the latter confirming Kuervo is also cisgender to boot.
  • Word of God:
    • According to cc!Acho's post-canon Q&A livestream, in relation to the battle on the Faction Isles in the finale:
      • Water's ending had to receive an on-the-spot rewrite because all her NPC friends died in the battle.
      • Claud was the only planned NPC death.
      • cc!Oli wanted his character to die in the battle, resulting in Retirony, which is presumably why he didn't livestream his perspective, but cc!Acho decided against it so that his character could participate in the rest of the finale.
      • cc!Acho refused to kill Madeleine (p!Graecie's NPC love interest) in the battle while playing 'ohca' because she's "already been through enough".
    • According to a post-canon livestream from Will, Shep's involvement in the Luscinia subplot began because of an offhand fan comment on Tumblr about how Will and Shep's characters looked alike.
    • During Apo's BCG SMP livestream on February 2nd, 2024, Water reveals in the stream chat that she wrote the wedding vows for her character's wedding in about fifteen minutes.
  • Working Title: The fake working title used by the POWCreations Twitter account was Legs SMP for any mentions of the series before it was officially announced.
  • You Might Remember Me from...:
    • Acho, Apokuna, Bek, Eloise, Krow, Martyn, Oli, Olive (as Oliver), Owen, Scott, Shelby, Sniff, Tubbo, and Will are all returning members from the Rats SMP, while Aimsey, Guqqie, Kyle, Seapeekay, and Water made guest appearances in that series; Jimmy Solidarity makes a guest appearance in Pirates, and KaraCorvus and Nukeri make a guest appearance in both series.
    • Apokuna, Olive, Owen, and Sausage have all played characters in the POWMini story A Wild Pigs Chase, with Bek, Jojo, Kyle, Martyn, and Reddoons making guest appearances as NPCs.
    • Scott, Sausage, Oli, Seapeekay, Shelby, Martyn, Scar, and Owen are all members of the New Life SMP (the latter as Sparrow), with the former five also being on its predecessor series, Afterlife SMP.
    • In addition to the above, Scott, Sausage, Oli, Shelby, Martyn, and Owen have all been on the Empires SMP, particularly in Season 2, either as a full-time member or a guest.note  Cleo and Scar were also on the SMP via its crossover with Hermitcraft and vice versa, with Martyn hosting a Hermitcraft charity event briefly before the crossover. Meanwhile, Eloise makes a Voice-Only Cameo in Sausage's Season 2 finale voicing his dog, Bubbles.
    • Related to the above, Scott, Cleo, Martyn, and Scar have played on all five seasons of the Life SMP thus far.
    • Scott, Cleo, Eloise, and Shelby were all on the WitchCraft SMP, with Sausage and Oli making guest appearances in Eloise's episodes.
    • Acho, Aimsey, Bek, Eloise, Guqqie, Michela, Scott, and Shelby are all on the Area Unknown SMP; Owen also used to be a member of the server.
    • Aimsey, Graecie, Guqqie, Michela, Sniff, and Tubbo were all part of the Bear SMP.
    • Members of the Outsiders SMP on the server include Acho, Apokuna, Bek, Eloise (as Soup), Graecie, Krow, Kyle, Owen, and Red. Scott, Water, and Will have also made appearances as NPCs.
    • Aimsey, Bek, Scott, and Tubbo were on the Origins SMP; Owen has also made a guest appearance.
    • Aimsey, Tubbo, Puffy, Eret, and Seapeekay were all members of the Dream SMP. Additionally, Scott makes two brief voice-only appearances: once non-canonically on one of Tubbo's livestreams, and then canonically as a Voice-Only Cameo in Aimsey's character finale stream; Michela also makes a brief appearance in the latter stream.
    • In an example that for once does not include Scott Smajor in any shape or form, Reddoons has been on the Lifesteal SMP since its third season, and Tubbo makes a guest appearance in that season's finale.
