Trivia / Duel Masters

Go To

  • Acting for Two:
    • Yumiko Kobayashi voices Shobu (at least until he grew up), his brother Katta and his nephew Joe Kirifuda. She plays both Katta and Joe in the final episodes of Duel Masters VS Revolution Final and in the 2 part 15th anniversary episode of Duel Masters 2017 she even gets to talk to herself as all 3 characters.
    • Aki Toyosaki voices both Momo Uraraka and The Queen of the Nature Civilization who happens to be her biological mother and she gets to talk to herself as both characters.
    • Cam Clarke does a large number of supporting roles during the first season's dub, having voiced Shobu's and Rekuta's fathers as well as Toru and one of the tournament announcers.
  • The Cameo:
  • Crossdressing Voices: Shobu (until he grew up), Katta, Joe, Hakuoh, Rekuta and many others in the original Japanese.
  • Defictionalization: In Kintaro's introduction episode in the dub, a reference is made to a "www.noveltyflyingcapes.com", which sells, well, novelty flying capes. During the shows run, there was actually a page at that address, featuring a picture of Hakuoh with his cape, and information on where to get the capes—for 50% off, you can tell them Fritz the Bitter Goblin sent you. Unfortunately, the page is long gone. An archived version still exists, but all that's visible is the aforementioned information.
  • Incidental Multilingual Wordplay: The shades-wearing pajama-clad baby is named Jouji in Japan. This was easy to translate to George for the dub, and plenty of Boy George references quickly followed.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes:
    • The English dub of "Charge" has never been reran after it originally aired on Toonami, and has never gotten any kind of official home release either.note  Most episodes are unofficially available online, though some were only partially uploaded. This remained the case until Amazon finally uploaded the complete English dub of "Charge" in 2024.
    • The original Japanese version of the series is very hard track down even on the internet due to lack of official DVD releases, lack of rebroadcast in Japan and not enough interest from the fandom to preserve the show. The Joe Era and Win Era do get uploaded regularly to torrent sites without subs and the Katta Era can be found scattered around torrent sites if you are patient enough. The Shobu Era? Good luck with that one.
  • No Export for You:
    • And how! A U.S.-exclusive season, eight Japan-exclusive seasons, Japanese OVAs, a Japan-only TCG (after 2005), and a U.S.-only animated series and TCG for Kaijudo. And just to rub salt in the wound, none of the Japan-exclusive anime have been fansubbed.
    • Wizards of the Coast has stopped publishing for Duel Masters after 12 sets, and the following sets can only be bought from Japan.
  • Production Posse: The Brains Base entries beginning with 2018's Duel Masters! utilize many of the animators from Future Card Buddyfight, along with regular animation subcontractor Nakamura Productions (who, coincidentally, also worked as a regular contractor for Buddyfight).
  • Recursive Adaptation: It's quite funny when you think about it. Yu-Gi-Oh! manga created "Duel Monsters" as a tribute to Magic: The Gathering. Then this tribute got so popular it got a real life counterpart, greatly helped by its anime counterpart. Then Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of Magic, wanted to imitate Yu-Gi-Oh! manga with a Magic manga which didn't turned out as expected, leading to a card game called "Duel Masters". But then the anime got popular enough, so it got a real life counterpart. WOW.
Magic -> Yu-Gi-Oh! Magic tribute -> Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime -> Yu-Gi-Oh! card game -> Magic Manga -> Duel Masters Anime -> Duel Masters Card Game.
  • Star-Making Role: Shobu Kirifuda was the role that cemented Yumiko Kobayashi as one of the go-to voice actresses for Kid Hero boys.
