- B-Team Sequel: Rupert Wyatt didn't return to direct, due to his concern that a May 2014 release date would not give him enough time to make the film properly. In addition, the script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver was re-written, and Michael Giacchino replaced Patrick Doyle as the film's composer.
- California Doubling: In a case of California being doubled, Louisiana stands in for San Francisco.
- The Other Darrin:
- Two of the Serkis Folk apes have new, better known actors: Toby Kebbell as antagonist Koba, and Judy Greer as Caesar's mate Cornelia.
- In the French dub, Jérémie Covillault replaced Benoît Allemane as Caesar.
- In the Japanese dub, Caesar is voiced by Masato Obara, rather than Chō from the previous film.
- Production Posse: Director Matt Reeves was a co-creator of the TV series Felicity, which starred Keri Russell in the titular role. Keri Russell appears in Dawn as Ellie.
- Kodi Smit Mc Phee who plays Alexander in this film played the main character, Owen, in Let Me In, director Matt Reeves' previous film.
- Promoted Fan Boy: The director’s commentary mentioned how Gary Oldman liked the Planet of the Apes films and was happy to act for this movie.
- Real-Life Relative: The photographs of Dreyfus' children, are of Gary Oldman's children in real-life.
- What Could Have Been:
- Before Matt Reeves was brought on to direct, the original premise had the apes live alongside the humans in the ruins of San Francisco. The apes would've been more evolved than in the final film and would've been able to speak in complete sentences.
- Juan Antonio Bayona, Guillermo del Toro, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and Jeff Nichols were among those considered to direct after Wyatt opted out. Rian Johnson was also reportedly considered.
