The show features Jeffrey DeMunn, Elizabeth Franz, Edward Hermann, Sada Thompson, Barnard Hughes, Patrick Day, Ken Howard, John Harkins, Maria Tucci, Peter Riegert, Jim Dale, among others.

It ran on PBS for 13 seasons.

  • Court Jester: Julie Taymor's episode, "Fool's Fire" is a heavily stylized adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "Hop-Frog". The title character is a deformed little person who was abducted from his home and forced to become the court jester of a king. He plays his "final jest" on the king and his ministers for abusing his only friend.
  • Intermission: The show used a title card saying "Intermission" halfway through their longer episodes, complete with voiceover saying that the production would return afterwards. One example is the 1991 filmed version of The Grapes of Wrath by Steppenwolf Theatre Company, starring the company's three founders, Gary Sinise, Terry Kinney, and Jeff Perry, along with Lois Smith.
