Go To

The gang travels to a mountain resort for some skiing and to watch a snowboarding competition, but end up investigating rumors of a snow creature that is attacking the participants. However, when Velma comes down with a cold and Fred injures his leg, it is up to Scooby, Shaggy and Daphne to solve the mystery.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Catch Your Death of Cold: Velma bundles herself up almost to the point of immobility, declaring that she'll get the last laugh when all the others catch colds. She's the only one who does catch a cold.
  • Cell Phones Are Useless: A journalist ranting about ratings has trouble with her phone. The gang suspect her because of her interest in getting people's attention. Later, Daphne's cell phone glitches while Fred is calling to warn her that the monster is coming. It turns out to be a Chekhov's Gun, as the Monster of the Week was a machine radio-controlled by the villain, whose radio signs were causing interference on the cell phones.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Fred points out the large number of snowboarding videos to Velma, who's sick in bed. Unable to follow the mystery, she watched the tapes. That told her that Avalanche Anderson had friends in special effects, and was hence the most likely suspect behind the snow creature's rampage.
  • Draw Aggro: The gang encounters the spook of the week, a towering ice-man. Velma, who bundled herself in winter clothes to the point that she looks like a ball, can't keep up with the others. Fred comes back, shines his flashlight at the creature's face, and yells at it to pick on someone its own size, drawing it away from Velma.
  • Establishing Series Moment: Shaggy being visible right through the ice-creature he's standing behind, revealing that the perps in this series have moved beyond rubber suits.
  • Fooled by the Sound: Daphne hears an avalanche outside and believes Velma sneezed.
  • Foreshadowing: When the doctor who is treating Avalanche Anderson, who seemingly broke his after being attacked the Snow Creature, offers to take him in for x-rays for his leg, Avalanche turns down because he believes it's pointless as he is out of the contest. This is a sign that Avalanche is faking his injury to ward off suspicion.
  • Hair-Trigger Avalanche: As the villain tries to escape, Scooby notices Velma on the verge of sneezing. He turns her in the direction of the mountain, burying Avalanche Anderson in his namesake.
  • An Ice Person: The monster appears to be made of ice and snow. Eventually it turns out to be mechanical, and all its components inside are made of transparent material to sell the illusion.
  • I'm Melting!: Subverted. When Daphne is cornered by the ice monster, she attempts to melt it with a blowdryer, but it has no effect. This is a clue that it's not really made of ice.
  • Injured Limb Episode: While distracting the snow creature from Velma, Fred tumbles down a snowy slope and breaks his leg. This puts him largely out of commission for the rest of the mystery.
  • Irony: Velma wears multiple layers of extremely baggy snow gear thinking she will be the only one who hasn’t caught a cold. Guess what happens not long after?
  • Obfuscating Disability: The gang finds Avalanche Anderson, one of the competitors, lying in the snow, claiming to have been attacked by the creature. He claims it broke his leg, but Velma ultimately realizes he was really the snow creature himself. He was planning an amazing recovery just in time to win.
  • Ow, My Body Part!: Fred runs away from the monster after distracting it from Velma. He falls down a snowy slope and breaks his leg, which is punctuated by him exclaiming about the pain and clutching the limb.
    Fred: Ow! My leg!
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title refers to the song "There's No Business Like Show Business".
  • Red Herring: The groundskeeper used to be a champion skier before suffering a Career-Ending Injury in a collision with a snowboarder. He's also pretty unfriendly. However, he's not the culprit.
  • Sick Episode: Velma comes down with a cold during the mystery of the week. Her constant sneezing causes a lot of trouble and at one point, Daphne banishes her to bed, saying she's too sick to think.
  • Tank-Tread Mecha: For most of the episode the monster's feet are covered by snow. The climactic chase reveals its feet are really treads, just moments before it's discovered to be a robot.
  • Wham Line:
Fred: Okay, guys, don't panic! Remember, there's a good chance it's just a terrifying monster suit with some creep inside.
Shaggy: There's only one thing missing from your theory, Fred.
    Fred: What?
Shaggy: [moves behind the monster, revealing it's transparent] Like, the creep inside!
  • Who Is Driving?: While heading towards the ski resort, the gang watches a news report on the competition...which gets interrupted by a van that looked just like the Mystery Machine coming right at the reporter and interviewee. The gang then realizes that Fred needs to look back at the road.
  • Wrong Insult Offence: Velma immediately corrects the villain when he doesn't use the phrase "meddling kids."
  • You Meddling Kids: Parodied; the villain of the week refers to the gang as "interloping adolescents" in his Motive Rant; Velma corrects him that it's "meddling kids."
