Nandor and Laszlo's trip to New Jersey doesn't work as planned. Meanwhile, Guillermo and Nadja's separate plans for a fun night collide.

Tropes

  • All Myths Are True: It turns out that the Jersey Devil does exist, matching Sean's strange description to the letter. This is despite the vampires dismissing it as a story they made up to explain away their murders. Laszlo and Nandor (with an assist from Baby Colin Robinson and the music of Bon Jovi) manage to take it down before it kills Sean, and they bring its head back as a trophy.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Nandor and Lazslo have one of these moments towards the end of the episode, when the former finally admits that he's been hostile to the latter for most of the trip because he misses the two of them hanging out together.
  • Big Damn Heroes: It’s thanks to Colin playing music (specifically Living on a Prayer) that Nandor and Laszlo were able to get the drop on the Jersey Devil.
  • Brick Joke: Guillermo puts up a poster of the 90's series My So-Called Life at the beginning as part of the attempt to pass off the house as his own place to his family while Nandor and Laszlo are out. When Nandor and Laszlo come home after the weekend, they're baffled by the poster.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Despite their vampire powers, Lazlo and Nandor are no match for the Jersey Devil, and only manage to subdue him after child Colin distracts the devil with music of Bon Jovi.
  • Did Not Think This Through: When Guillermo invites his family over to the mansion, he forgets that, since he himself is a descendant of Van Helsing and thus a naturally born vampire hunter, this is likely true for the rest of his family as well. Cue an Oh, Crap! moment when his grandma identifies Nadja as a vampire.
  • Everybody Knew Already: When Guillermo finally comes out to his family, he's thrown to discover that they always knew he was gay and are fine with it. It's his wanting to be a vampire that throws them.
  • Gender-Separated Ensemble Episode: Played with. Most of the men in the main cast leave for New Jersey, while Nadja has various supporting female characters come up to her room to enjoy the weekend without the other male vampires in the house. Guillermo is what causes the B-plot to not quite be fully segregated like the A-plot when she intrudes on the party he's throwing. At the end, Nadja demands that Guillermo arrange things so that all the men get out of her hair whenever she wants a girls' night.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Nandor and Laszlo each consider the other this, when in reality, they both are.
  • Maintain the Lie: Guillermo has been telling his family a variety of lies, including Nadja being his girlfriend. She goes along with it a bit, but by the end of the episode, as she hypnotizes them, makes it so they forget everything that happened... except for Guillermo coming out to them.
  • Music Soothes the Savage Beast: When confronted with the Jersey Devil, Laszlo attempts to subdue the beast with his magic flute. It seems to work, but then the devil grabs the flute and snaps it in half. The trope is then played straight when child Colin uses his ipad to play some Jersey music, which calms down the devil and allows Laszlo and Nandor to kill him.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Guillermo's grandma is the first to deduce Nadja's true nature. She is later shown to have both the strength and agility to rapidly produce wooden stakes on the fly for killing Nadja with excellent accuracy.
  • Not Himself: Being around Nadja awakens the vampire hunter in each member of Guillermo's family, causing them to start behaving violently and irrationally without knowing why, until they learn that Nadja's a vampire and begin hunting her. Fortunately, Guillermo manages to calm them down. Unfortunately, they pissed off Nadja.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Somehow, Nadja is able to hypnotize a pack of vicious vampire hunters by herself despite them chasing her.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Guillermo's relatives turn out to be really accepting when it comes to him being gay. Played for Laughs in that they are much less accepting about him wanting to be a vampire.
  • Pet the Dog: Nadja actually finds a little enjoyment hanging out with Guillermo's family until they turn on her, and she listens to Guillermo's plea not to kill them, mainly because she remembers how it feels to have family members die in front of her.
  • Shout-Out: Nadja's favorite film turns out to be Mamma Mia! because she feels this movie about her homeland is charming and nostalgic. One of her requests to Guillermo at the end is to fetch her a copy of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again so she can watch that as well.
