Recap / What We Do In The Shadows S 4 E 6 The Wedding

Go To

Nandor has been in a tizzy as his wedding with Marwa looms over everyone as the event of the week.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Bridezilla: Nandor is explicitly noted by the Guide to be a male example as a Control Freak over his perfect wedding.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Baron and the Sire make return appearances as guests at Nandor's wedding.
  • Creepy Souvenir: Discussed; when Nandor can't decide what to wear to his wedding he complains to the Djinn how in the old days he used to cut of the penises of his enemies and wear them on a necklace made from their intestines. When the Djinn asks if this was a wedding tradition, Nandor claims no, it was just for a tuesday evening.
  • Everyone Has Standards: a vampire working as a cashier at a store complains to Guillermo how hard it is to make ends meet, but when Guillermo suggests he could rob the corpses of his victims from any valuables they might be carrying he objects, stating he's a vampire, not a thief.
  • Fountain of Youth: Baron Afanas is restored to his former glory by the Djinn after Nandor specifically wishes for the Baron's damaged body to be fully healed and restored so he can have the self-confidence to officiate the wedding. Nadja and Laszlo are both very appreciative and very horny for this new development.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Sean and Charmaine are invited to Nandor's wedding at Laszlo's insistence, but Nadja and the Guide hypnotize them to forget everything by the next day, so they won't have to bother with the issues of them learning about vampires during that night. The second post-credits scene shows it worked, with both of them chalking it up to having a really screwy night after marijuana or drinking too much.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Nadja observes that having her accountant suffering a nervous breakdown from the sheer stress of managing Nandor's impossible demands ultimately wouldn't do her nightclub any good in the long run. So, she and the Guide step in to get Nandor to stop with his demands or just use his djinn to make them happen instead of asking Guillermo to do everything.
    • Though the Djinn's main duty was to teach Nandor lessons with carrying the vampire's wishes to the letter of his Exact Words and got rather tired of all the Wasteful Wishing, the Djinn gives him three more wishes in a new lamp to use as a present for his wedding.
    • After the wedding, Nandor discovers Guillermo has fallen asleep, and Child-Colin has drawn a dick on his forehead. Nandor does try to rub the dick off initially, but then gently covers Guillermo up, murmuring that he should keep sleeping.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Marwa wants her parents to be at her wedding, so Nandor reluctantly wishes them back to life, but makes sure to keep them around no longer than strictly necessary. Then during the wedding, after the priest asks Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace, Marwa's mother openly objects the wedding.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Nandor doesn't know what a "bridezilla" is, and the Guide's further attempts to clarify it is a Portmanteau of "bride" and "Godzilla" only result in further confusion.
  • Ship Tease: Nandor has the Djinn influence Marwa to like all the same things he does. During the reception, she suddenly starts coming onto Guillermo.
  • Three Wishes: Nandor uses up all his wishes from the original magic lamp, but the Djinn gives him a new lamp as a wedding gift, with the warning that this one only grants 3 wishes.
  • Wasteful Wishing: Continuing the running gag of Nandor and him wasting his wishes, this episode shows him wishing for the lid of his coffin to close because he's too lazy to get up and do it himself, nor willing to get Guillermo involved.
