Recap / Transformers G 1 Desertion Of The Dinobots

Go To

The Dinobots have had enough of being the Autobot's errand boys and leave. Unfortunately, they leave just when both the Autobots and Decepticons' vital Cybertronium supply begin to run out, causing them to first suffer from malfunctions that eventually will lead to their deaths, so it's up to Spike, Sparkplug and Carly to find the Dinobots and convince them to go to Cybertron for a new supply of the vital Cybertronium to save the Autobots.

Tropes

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The Dinobots quickly warm up to Spike and Carly in part 2 after the human couple restores their free wills and help them to escape Cybertron.
  • Continuity Snarl: A very jarring one at that - Part 1 ends with Shockwave firing into the space bridge, causing a massive explosion. The beginning of the second part has Spike and Carly in the space bridge, and Shockwave's blast causes whatever it hits to disappear, with no explosion at all.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: As usual, the moment the Dinobots step in, the Decepticons are completely helpless against them.
    • Megatron manages to brilliantly turn a hopeless battle and curbstomps the Dinobots by detonating several giant airliners and jet fuel tanks just next to the Dinobots when they transform back into their (more vulnerable) robot modes, tearing them to pieces and nearly killing them.
    • When Spike, Carly and the Dinobots escape from Cybertron there's nothing the guards can do to stop them.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Carly gets into the Space Bridge by driving her car past Devastator, much to Spike's horror. Fortunately for them, they avoid getting squashed thanks to Scrapper being the right leg of Devastator.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: The Dinobots finally had enough of being used as the Autobot's errand boys and leave.
  • Epic Fail: Due to the lack of Cybertronium on both sides, the first battle between the Autobots and Decepticons doesn't really go far.
  • Failed a Spot Check: In the opening scene, Soundwave and Blaster are sitting in Ironhide's cargo compartment in alt-mode. Blaster somehow fails to notice Soundwave sitting right in front of him. Likewise, Ironhide doesn't even know that Soundwave's even in his cargo compartment until he ejects Ravage.
  • The Immune: The constant exposure to Earth's atmosphere eroded the Autobots and Decepticons' supply of Cybertronium, causing their increasing health failures. But this isn't a problem for the Dinobots, because they were built on Earth using Earthian elements and do not need Cybertronium to function.
  • Insane Troll Logic: After Megatron blows his vocal components, Starscream believes it to be a valid reason to take over as a leader of the Decepticons. Let us repeat: He believes that Megatron simply blowing his voice is enough of an excuse to supplant him as a leader.
    • Then again, he probably thinks Megatron is falling ill, allowing him to take over.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Grimlock and his Dinobots are rightfully upset at the way the Autobots treat them, especially since this time they almost got killed for saving them.
  • Losing Your Head: Powerglide's head falls off, although he is still able to speak and otherwise function.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: During part 2, Spike, Carly, and Swoop try to find the rest of the Dinobots, only to discover them mining out Cybertronium for the Decepticons and refusing to leave. Swoop immediately figures out that something catastrophically wrong is going on because the Dinobots never do anything for anyone else.
  • Percussive Maintenance: When Jazz is unable to transform, Ironhide fixes him by kicking him.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Tired of constantly taking orders and saving the Autobots whenever they need help, the Dinobots leave the base.
  • War Is Hell: A video depicting the history of the Great War causes Swoop to have a Heel Realization about his desertion. It’s implied he shared this with the other Dinobots, as they remain loyal to the Autobots from here on out.
  • Zerg Rush: As Swoop explains to Spike and Carly, the Decepticons managed to capture the other Dinobots by sending hordes of armored guards against them.
