- Creator Killer: Invoked and averted: The Critic thinks that everyone involved with the film had their careers destroyed by the movie. However, his examples are struck down (Todd Holland, Fred Savage, and Christian Slater), and Jimmy grew up into The Angry Video Game Nerd.
- Designated Villain: Invoked when the Critic discusses Mr. Putnam:Critic: When news of their runaway hits the parents, the mother and step-father hire a professional runaway... bringer... backer person named Mr. Putnam. But Corey's brother and father are destined to get them back first, because Mr. Putnam has the audacity to bring them back... while being mildly rude.
Mr. Putnam: I make my money by bringin' kids in, and... I don't make it if someone else brings the kid in first.
Critic: We can't let him bring our children back alive and well with such hideously poor manners. To the shitmobile! - Photo Doodle Recognition: Critic realizes the Wizard grows up to be The Angry Video Game Nerd by drawing glasses on his picture. This is a subversion though, in that the Nerd (James Rolfe) really didn't star in that movie (the actor was Luke Edwards), and the similarity is just coincidence.
- Running Gag: Variants on "Now you're playing with power."

- The scene at the end when the Critic draws glasses on a picture of Jimmy is a parody of a similar scene in Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. After the reveal, Utrenja by Penderecki plays.
- Clips from Rocky, A League of Their Own, and Remember the Titans are edited into the final game competition.
- When Lucas loses the game competition, he's accompanied by the Imperial March.
- Skyward Scream: Combined with Say My Name, the Critic does this when he realizes that Jimmy is the AVGN.
- Tempting Fate: After his other
Creator Killer examples are shot down, the Critic pointed out Jimmy, the Child Prodigy, couldn't possibly achieve fame and recognition from a lifetime of playing video games. Then he did a Photo Doodle Recognition.
