"So you gonna tell me you're in control right now?"
Written by Dawn Kamoche & Ariella Blejer
Directed by Michael Goi

"I'm sorry, I just... I want you to know that, whether or not you join this fight, I'm on your side... and hers."
Esme Frost

Esme tries to get Lorna to sign on to the Inner Circle's next plan, Reed tries to get a handle on his powers, Lauren and Caitlin search for information on Rebecca, and the Underground defends mutant refugees from the Purifiers.

Tropes:

  • Brutal Honesty: When Caitlin still deludes herself that Andy needs saving, Lauren bluntly tells her that he knows exactly what he does and doesn't want saving.
  • The Bus Came Back: Pedro and Shatter. Sadly, Pedro gets arrested and Shatter gets killed at the end of the episode.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Turns out the Frost Sisters were clones, created by Creed Financials as weapons. And they used to be 5 - 2 of them died.
  • Death by Origin Story: Celeste and Mindee, the two other Frost Sisters.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After being used as weapons one too many times, the Frost Sisters had the guards kill the doctor in charge of them and then commit suicide.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Esme refuses to mind control Lorna to do their bidding. She justifies it as being an unsustainable method in the long term.
    • Jace is also adamant on turning the mutants over to the authorities instead of committing a massacre, like a few of his trigger-happy compatriots want to.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Thankfully, the audience is spared the sight of Rebecca turning one of the clinic workers inside out.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Shatter runs out to distract the Purifiers so the rest of the mutants can escape the church. Jace ends up shooting him with a heavy machine gun after Shatter kills one of the Purifiers.
  • Ignored Expert: Reed is unwilling to accept help from John in controlling his powers at first.
  • It's Personal: The Frost Sisters are very eager to attack Creed Financials, since they are the ones that created and abused them.
  • Knockout Gas: Jace fires gas rounds into the church which can knock people out after a few seconds. It's noted to be illegal for police to use.
  • Lured into a Trap: The Purifiers attacked a sanctuary church but didn't kill anyone in order to follow the resident mutants and have them bring them to the rest of the Underground. The Underground realizes this too late and find themselves surrounded.
  • Mama Bear: Lorna does a Psychic Strangle on Esme for reading her daughter's mind to make her stop crying.
  • Power Incontinence: Reed still has trouble controlling his powers. When he finally manages to activate his powers intentionally to save everyone at the church, he can't turn them off.
  • Psychic Strangle: Lorna uses Esme's metal necklace to lift her off the ground and choke her in retaliation for Esme reading Dawn's mind.
  • Self-Made Orphan: A former doctor from the Mental Clinic that is being interrogated by Lauren and Caitlin reveals that Rebecca killed her own family.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Esme starts humming Lorna's lullaby to Dawn, which she overheard when she used her powers to make Dawn stop crying. Since Lorna deliberately only hums it when she's alone with Dawn, she knows Esme must have read her daughter's mind to learn it.
  • Taken for Granite: Shatter uses his powers on one of the Purifiers, turning him into the same material Shatter is made of.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Lauren is extremely on the edge throughout the episode. She briefly even considers that the Inner Circle might be right.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Lorna is becoming more and more frustrated with Reeva's secrecy and being unable to spend more time with her daughter due to being forced to train constantly. It becomes worse after she realizes that Esme has been inside her mind. After the latter opens up to her, however, they settle their differences.
  • We Can Rule Together: In their dream, Andy urges Lauren to join the Inner Circle.
  • Wham Line: After Reed uses his powers to get the Underground out of the church, the ending has Caitlin and Lauren finding him hunched amongst partially disintegrated objects. He yells at the two not to touch him. Why?
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Shatter encourages Reed to not lose hope in controlling his powers, as he experienced similar issues when his powers first manifested. He even attempted to commit suicide.

"If he won't come back on his own, I have to fight him and bring him back myself."
