Recap / SPY×FAMILY - Anime: S01 E06

Go To

Anya's first day of school at Eden Academy is approaching, and Operation STRIX's second phase begins: Anya must earn eight Stella Stars in order to become an Imperial Scholar, which would allow Loid to infiltrate the school gathering and meet Donovan Desmond, while avoiding receiving eight Tonitrus Bolts, which would lead to her expulsion.

Anya gets her fittings for the school uniform, receiving the lot of them a few days later. As they return from the dressmaker, Yor takes Anya to the market to buy groceries. A bored Anya decides to go ahead of Yor, only to be kidnapped by a group of thugs: they have recognized Anya's uniform, and they think Anya comes from a rich family that will be willing to pay a large ransom for Anya. Yor beats one of them and scares the lot away, but she becomes distressed at the feeling of having failed as a mother. Anya convinces her to teach her how to defend herself and keep situations from escalating.

When orientation day comes, Loid arranges for Anya to be in the same class as Damian Desmond, Donovan's second son, hoping that Anya can become friends with him and establish an alternate plan for Operation STRIX. Also joining the class is Becky Blackwell, daughter of a rich family with great influence, who decides to attach herself to Anya, but Anya uses her telepathy to realize Becky isn't being sincere in her interest.

During orientation, Anya attempts to approach Damien, only for Damien to prove himself a nasty bully who isn't interested in becoming Anya's friend. When Damien starts to pester Anya and Becky, Anya attempts to de-escalate the situation by smiling, but her smug smile only prompts Damien to claim he'll bully her for as long as he pleases. Fed up with his nasty attitude, Anya punches Damien, sending him flying across the hall.

Mr. Henderson quickly arrives and demands answers out of the students. Anya tries to lie her way out, but Damien's hangers-on point out that she clearly punched Damien. However, Anya manages to cover up by claiming he punched Damien to protect Becky, because Damien's friends had been stepping on the latter's foot. Mr. Henderson relents, but nonetheless misbehavior must be punished, and Anya earns herself a Tonitrus Bolt, spoiling both of Loid's plans. But, at least, Anya has gained Becky's admiration, and the latter decides to become the former's friend, shedding her previous insincerity.

Tropes that appear in this episode:

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Becky decides to become Anya's friend after the latter (seemingly) defends her from Damien and his friends.
  • Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: Damian gets so angry with Anya that he resorts to calling her "uggo", much to the embarrassment of his coat riders.
  • Cute Bruiser: After receiving some training from Yor, Anya becomes this, being able to send Damian flying with one punch.
  • Downer Ending: Anya's first day of school ends with her earning her first Tonitrus Bolt and her efforts to befriend Damian are heavily strained.
  • Fireball Eyeballs: A spark of fire appears in the iris of Anya's eyes when Damian responds to her smug smile by threatening to bully her every day at school.
  • Gang of Bullies: Damian is a smug little jerk who thinks highly of himself just because of his prestigious background. He's also followed by two coat riders who kiss the ground he steps on while badmouthing anyone that their boss antagonizes.
  • Half-Truth: Anya tries to argue that her pummeling Damian was because he was stepping on Becky's feet earlier. While that part is true, it wasn't the main reason why she decided to let the little brat have it.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: The class photo at the end of the episodes shows Damian being the only kid in the group whose parents didn't show up for his entrance ceremony.
  • Mama Bear: Yor fiercely defends Anya from a group of thugs who tried to kidnap her in order to ask her parents for a ransom.
  • Mistaken for Servant: When some young thugs see Anya and Yor at the park, they assume that the latter is a maid of a rich couple who took her employers' daughter on an errand, and conspire to kidnap Anya. When Anya gets bored and runs out of the store, the thugs grab her and intend to hold her for ransom, and when Yor goes out to confront them, they tell her that she'll be fired for being so careless with her employer's child, whom they'll demand a ransom to get her back. When Yor clarifies she's Anya's mother, she beats up one of the thugs and scares the others into running away.
  • Oh, Crap!: At the very end, the forgers make a variation of this face during the class photo for different reasons: Twilight gets a Thousand-Yard Stare after realizing that Operation Strix looks like it has a high probability of failure because as family man Loid Forger he has to deal with a variable that's almost impossible to predict (Anya); Yor uses her hands to bury her face in shame when her attempt to be a good stepmother backfired when as her new daughter used her self defense lessons to lash out violently against another child, making her think, and look like, she's a bad mother; Anya's on the verge of tears because on her very first day of school and she already got in major trouble and (through her mind reading) realized that she jeopardized Loid's mission and world peace.
  • Public Secret Message: Loid gets instructions from his spy peers via writing with mustard on his dish at a restaurant.
  • Tempting Fate: Loid hopes that Anya will be able to befriend all of her classmates who are the children of influential people. This is quickly proven wrong when Anya reads Becky's mind and refuses to talk to her.
  • Time for Plan B: Concerned that Anya will not be able to get Stella Stars in time, Loid already sets up a backup plan to get close to Donovan Desmond by having Anya be in the same class as Donovan's second son, Damian, in hopes that she'll get close enough to Damian to lead to an eventual meeting with his dad. However, that plan starts to go downhill very quickly when Damian's attitude towards Anya leads to her giving him a punch in the face.
  • Tranquil Fury: After a kidnapping attempt, Yor gives Anya a few lessons in self-defense, which includes keeping calm during stressful situations, and only using force when it becomes inevitable. During orientation at school, Damien and his cronies spend most of their time pestering Anya and Becky, and Anya shows him a smile that makes her look smug rather than confident, which prompts Damien to tell her he'll bully her for as long as he pleases. After Anya decides that she has had enough of Damien's nasty attitude, she punches him hard enough to send him flying across the hall.
  • Underestimating Badassery: The Gang of Bullies don't know about Yor's powers when they gang up on her. They soon find out that she is a badass fighter.
  • The Un-Smile: Yor advised Anya to try to respond to every provocation with a friendly smile. Unfortunately, Anya's fake smile turns out to make her look smug instead. Her attitude ends up earning Damian's rage and Becky's admiration.
  • Unflattering ID Photo: The Forger Family gives less-than-stellar faces for the group photo after the trouble Anya got into.
