Recap / SPY×FAMILY Anime S01 E05

Go To

The list of Eden Academy's admitted students is published... but Anya, unfortunately, is not among them, much to Loid's distress. However, Mr. Henderson later approaches the Forgers in private and reveals that Anya is at the top of the reserve list due to her high marks in the exams: should one family decide not to send their child to Eden, Anya will be assured her place. Yor briefly considers killing a child's parents to open that place, but she rejects the idea.

A couple of days later, Loid receives a phone call, and after hanging, he pulls a party popper out of his pocket: Anya is now, officially, an Eden Academy student! Franky quickly shows up (having used his contacts to learn of the event) and the Forgers and Franky celebrate the good news with dinner.

During dinner, an inebriated Franky convinces Anya to request something big for her success: to act out a play session where Loid rescues her from a bad guy, like in her favorite series, "Spy Wars". Loid manages to rent a castle, but it's empty, much to Anya's sadness... so he calls in all available WISE spies in Ostania under pretext of a top-secret mission.

Quickly, the game is established: "Loidman", must save "Princess Anya" from the evil "Count Scruffy" (Franky), aided by his minions (WISE's spies), led by the Strongest Witch in the world, "Yorticia". Loid is put at the start of the game after donning gloves and a mask, and sets out to carry out this improptu "mission".

True to his skills, Loid is able to avoid all obstacles with agility and precision. All of "Count Scruffy"'s minions are quickly knocked out of the game, even as Loid becomes heavily outnumbered. The only true obstacle in his goal is Yor, who, heavily drunk and out of it, has taken the game a tad too seriously and unleashes a quick assault on Loid, who almost becomes overwhelmed by her strength: it's only her breaking a heel and passing out that prevents further problems. "Count Scruffy" quickly falls to the side, and Loid "rescues" Anya.

WISE is certainly not happy about being sent the bill, though...

Tropes:

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Zigzagged with Yor. She acts drunk for most of the episode but when she fights Loid when she's playing an evil witch she is as competent as she is when not drunk, to the point of being able to hurt Loid, something the other spies didn't manage to achieve. When she is about to overpower Loid, however, her heel breaks and she passes out.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": Ironically enough, Loid gives a stunted performance when he's pretending to be Loidman. Thankfully, his coworkers still see it as excellent acting.
  • Battle Aura: Yor emits a blood-red aura when she's about to attack "Loidman".
  • Big Bad Wannabe: After Loid gets lucky that an inebriated Yor trips and passes out before she could really do some serious damage to him, a drunken Franky, as "Count Scruffy", says that he will make sure "Loidman" doesn't succeed in rescuing "Princess Anya" as he's the evilest villain in the world, Loid just punches him aside and rescues the princess, ending the game.
  • Big Fancy Castle: Loid rents such a castle to celebrate Anya's acceptance to Eden.
  • Cheap Costume: Loidman's attire consists of gloves and a domino mask. Though the actor playing him considers it to be quite embarrassing.
  • Comically Missing the Point: In a way. How is Loid able to point out that Yor, that is supposed to be playing a witch, is only using physical attacks, but doesn't at any point notice that Yor has much more strength and agility than one would expect from an office worker?
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: All the WISE spies that were hired to try to stop Loid during Anya's game fail to deter him despite their sheer numbers. On the other hand, Yor puts up a decent one-on-one fight.
  • Damsel in Distress: Invoked. To celebrate Anya getting into Eden academy, a drunken Franky convinces Loid to rent out a castle and play out her favorite episode of "Spy Wars", where the hero, played by Loid, rescues a princess, played by Anya, from the villain, played by a drunk Franky.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Parodied with Franky's impersonation as Count Scruffy.
  • Fanboy: The other WISE spies are this to Loid, being thrilled by being able to help him with Operation Strix.
  • I Have a Family: After the Forgers don't see Anya's name on the list of accepted students, Housemaster Henderson, secretly tells them that Anya is on top of the waiting list because of how high her test scores are, and if an incoming student doesn't attend for whatever reason, she'll be allowed to attend in their place. Thinking that it was Loid's late wife's wish that Anya attend Eden Academy, Yor has an Imagine Spot where she's in her Thorn Princess persona cornering the father of an accepted student, who's begging for his life and telling her that his son will soon be attending Eden Academy, and she responds that it is because of her own family that she's doing this and apologizes while killing him. She rejects the plan as soon as she finishes imagining it, reminding herself that she must not kill innocent people.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Loid, during his fight with Yor. If Yor is playing the role of an evil witch, why is she attacking with kicks and punches?
  • Mundane Made Awesome: As a reward for getting admitted into Eden, Anya wants a play session where she's the damsel to be rescued by Loid from the Big Bad's castle, just like in her favorite spy-themed show. They rent an actual castle to play in, but it's empty and lacks the atmosphere... So they call every available agent for an "emergency mission pertaining to Operation Strix". Just so they can play as extras in Anya's play session.
  • Not So Weak: When Loid-man, played by Loid, reaches Count Scruffy, played by Franky, in his bid to rescue Princess Anya, played by Anya, Count Scruffy unleashes the Strongest Witch in the World "Yorticia", played by Yor, as his last line of defense. While Loid was able to fight off the other spies with relative ease because they're not as experienced as him, he holds back while fighting Yor since, as far as he knows, she's just a clerk who works at City Hall who knows a thing or two about self-defense, but Yor, in a drunken stupor, unleashes a flurry of kicks and hand strikes that catches him completely by surprise and she even manages to give him a small cut on his cheek. Luckily for Loid, Yor broke a heel, tripped, and passed out from too much booze before she managed to do some serious damage to him.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: In a drunken state, Yor gives these grim words before she attacks "Loidman".
Yorticia: Anyone who tries to kidnap Anya... will not get away alive!
  • Shockingly Expensive Bill: A consequence of Anya's play session. The bill from renting a castle and all the furnishings for Anya to play being saved from a castle is huge and Handler seems exasperated when she sees it.
  • Zero-Effort Boss: Franky, as Count Scruffy, presents himself as the last boss that stands between Loidman and the princess. Loid gives a simple bitch slap that knocks him aside.
