"Company Picnic" contains examples of:

  • Ahem: SpongeBob gives this to Plankton, having heard his gloating thus realizing his picnic was just a trick.
  • Cutting Corners: The company picnic Mr. Krabs throws cuts every corner, such as having them sit on napkins instead of a blanket and the only food being served is stale condiment packets, due to his cheapskate nature and not wanting to buy proper picnic equipment.
  • Eye Scream: Squidward accidentally squirts hot sauce in his eye after SpongeBob flicks a pickle into it, making it catch fire.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Squidward is horrified to discover the candy pen he is eating is actually a centipede.
  • Only Sane Man: SpongeBob, of all people, was the only one who didn't give in to Plankton's contract, and realizes this was all a trick.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Upon realizing Plankton was only using the picnic to trick Squidward and Mr. Krabs into working for him, SpongeBob immediately drops all traces of The Pollyanna and Cloudcuckoolander and stops them.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Squidward and Mr. Krabs trying to sign a contract with Plankton. SpongeBob sees this and stops them.
  • Overcrank: When SpongeBob tried to stop Mr. Krabs from signing a contract with Plankton, he goes slow-motion and lampshades the fact that he is talking like this. When the pen flies toward the eye of one of Plankton's robots, SpongeBob does a Slow "NO!".
  • Picnic Episode: The episode revolves around the Krusty Krew going on a picnic and Plankton trying to compete with them.
  • Removable Shell: Mr. Krabs once again molts his shell, just like in "Shell of a Man" and "Shell Shocked".
  • Right Behind Me: When Plankton is gloating to himself over tricking Mr. Krabs and Squidward into signing his contract and becoming his employees, the camera zooms out to reveal SpongeBob behind him, having heard everything.
  • Sdrawkcab Name: Not really backwards, but Plankton's robots are called Simmy and Tally, the first letters being a complete reverse of SpongeBob's krabby patty children, Timmy and Sally.
  • Valley Girl: SpongeBob does a Valley Girl accent in the beginning when playing with the patty figures.
  • Wham Shot: The pen flies right through Simmy the robot instead of hitting it, revealing it's fake; said pen then hits a projector which is projecting Simmy, and SpongeBob turns it off revealing Simmy and everything Plankton got to the picnic were reality bending holograms.
  • Writing Around Trademarks: SpongeBob makes a game by covering a paper plate with mustard and Mr. Krabs says that they can toss it around like "one of those things you toss around."

"Pull Up a Barrel" contains examples of:

  • Bad Boss: Captain Scarfish, who forces his crew to eat moldy sandwich crusts and slop rather than the delicious food Mr. Krabs makes.
  • But You Were There, and You, and You: According to Vincent Waller on why characters like Sandy are in Mr. Krabs's story, SpongeBob's brain is providing the visuals with people he's familiar with.
  • Framing Device: The episode's main story is told in a flashback by Mr. Krabs.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: SpongeBob does this to Patrick.
  • Interspecies Romance: Between Mr. Krabs (crab) and the pirate captain (squirrel).
  • Jail Bake: Mr. Krabs gives the pirate captain a pie, and she finds a sweet key inside.
  • Oblivious to Their Own Description: When Mr. Krabs talks about one of the guards that was watching his cell, SpongeBob states "that second guard sounds like a real goofball." Said guard is represented by SpongeBob in the story.
  • Retired Badass: This episode brought back the fact that Mr. Krabs was part of the Navy from "Shell of a Man".
  • Running Gag: Someone getting put in "the brig" and using a sweet key.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Seeing how disappointed the crew is being forced to eat slop, Mr. Krabs decides to go against the captain's orders and feed them cherries jubilee. This gets him thrown in the brig as punishment.
  • Secret Message Wink: Mr. Krabs tells a story about his old navy days. At the end of the story, he narrates that he freed a trapped pirate captain, whom he is implied to have a romantic relationship with; in the present day, Krabs and SpongeBob wink to each other over this fact, to Squidward's confusion.
  • Series Continuity Error: While this episode shows Mr. Krabs as being a chef for the navy, previous episodes establish him as being a terrible cook. A likely justification is he USED to be a good cook, but as of present day, his culinary skills have gotten rusty.
  • Villainous Crush: The pirate captain calls Mr. Krabs handsome a couple times and offers him a chance to join her. He seems to return her affections and even helps her escape the brig.
  • We Can Rule Together: Sandy (as the pirate captain) offers this to Mr. Krabs.
