Peeking Duck

Original air date: September 27, 2001

Aldo confides in Bill that he's having difficulty resisting the urge to eat duck, so Bill urges him to maintain self-control. Bill later shows his new telescope to Ed, Oly, and Waddle, then, while trying to locate Jupiter, sees Aldo inside the apartment of Claire and Cecil, which Bill finds peculiar.

The next day, Bill visits the couple's home, but they're not in. Bill later sees Aldo salivating at the sight of some ducks and briefly thinks the alligator has eaten one of the ducks, only to find he hasn't. Bill confides in Ed, Oly, and Waddle about how unusual the situation is, and the three manage to stop rooting through Bill's fridge long enough to posit that Aldo ate Claire and Cecil. The three leave when Aldo arrives, and when Bill questions Aldo about where Claire and Cecil are, Aldo evades the matter and leaves.

Bill later uses his telescope again to look into Claire and Cecil's apartment, and sees Aldo inside hitting something with an axe. Immediately after, Aldo comes by asking for some salt. With help from Ed, Oly, and Waddle, Bill investigates by sneaking through the vents and into the apartment. He's overjoyed to find Claire and Cecil still alive. When Aldo, Claire, and Cecil are understandably confused, Bill explains why he was worried. Aldo reaffirms he wouldn't eat a duck, and Claire and Cecil explain the situation: Aldo was housesitting for them while they were away, since their pet lizard Lizzie prefers Aldo over Bill, and they told Aldo not to tell Bill. Waddle puts Lizzie in his mouth, not realising she's a pet, then Aldo smacks the back of Waddle's head, sending Lizzie flying into the refrigerator door, unharmed.

"Peeking Duck" contains examples of:

  • Air-Vent Passageway: Bill, Ed, Oly, and Waddle crawl through the vents to gain access to Claire and Cecil's apartment.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": Claire and Cecil own a lizard named Lizzie.
  • Anti-Advice: When Bill, Ed, Oly, and Waddle are sneaking through air vents looking for Claire and Cecil's apartment, Waddle makes a guess where the apartment is. Ed decides that it must be in the opposite direction (Ed is wrong, however).
  • Autocannibalism: During Bill's Imagine Spot where Aldo is cooking Claire and Cecil alive, Aldo asks them to taste to see if they require more salt.
  • Blatant Lies: When Bill admits he thought Aldo ate Claire and Cecil, Ed claims he told Bill that Aldo wouldn't. In actuality, Ed was the one who suggested Aldo had eaten them.
  • By "No", I Mean "Yes": When Bill explains he was suspicious about Aldo's behaviour and Claire and Cecil being gone:
Aldo: You thought I ate them?
Bill: Oh, no, no, no! …Well, yeah.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Ed, Oly, and especially Waddle seem sad at the prospect that Cecil and Claire have been eaten by Aldo, and scold Bill for bringing Aldo to Ducktown. They later help Bill investigate the apparent disappearance.
  • Going to the Store: When Aldo arrives right when Ed, Oly, and Waddle believe he's eaten Claire and Cecil, the trio hastily evacuate to go tend to "the thing".
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: Bill uses "On the other wing" as a stand-in for "On the other hand".
  • Hypocritical Humor: Bill scolds Ed, Oly, and Waddle for using his new telescope to spy on a neighbour, but then zooms in on a pair of ducks making out for a moment before catching himself and moving the telescope's view elsewhere.
  • Imagine Spot: Bill has one where Aldo cooks Claire and Cecil.
  • Joke and Receive: Ed comments that Aldo had a tendency to look at Waddle "like he's smothered in orange sauce". The camera pans down to Waddle on the floor, smothered in orange sauce.
  • Out-of-Context Eavesdropping: When Bill, Ed, Oly, and Waddle reach Claire and Cecil's apartment, Aldo is heard saying, "Mmm, Claire, delicious!" This sounds like he's eating her, but when they get inside, it turns out he was complimenting her on her cooking.
  • Pun-Based Title: A play on "peking duck", a dish from Beijing, exacerbated by the plot revolving around Aldo being suspected of having eaten Cecil and Claire.
  • Stewed Alive: How Aldo cooks Claire and Cecil in Bill's Imagine Spot.
  • There Was a Door: When Bill, Ed, Oly, and Waddle enter Claire and Cecil's apartment through the air vent, Claire points out they have a front door.
  • Trash Landing: After being dropped by Ed, Oly, and Waddle, Bill falls into a trash can.

Fred's Meltdown

Original air date: September 27, 2001

A heatwave has struck Ducktown, and while Bill is trying to get cool, he sees Fred the penguin scoot by before entering his apartment. Bill hears loud noises from inside the room, and when he knocks on the door, Fred pulls Bill into the room with him. Bill is surprised to see how dedicated the room is to being as cold as possible, filled with ice and fans. When Fred tries to turn the temperature even lower, the sheer overload of devices causes a power failure that affects the entirety of Ducktown. After yelling at Fred, the other ducks retreat to Central Pond where it's cooler. Panicking over how hot he's getting, Fred begs Bill for help.

When they reach the pond, the ducks shun Fred, who begins to succumb to heatstroke. Bill takes him to Swampwood where there's still power, and goes with him into a freezer at the store… only for Bill to end up in a shopping cart. He gets away, causing several alligators to chase after him. He's saved when Fred threatens to knock over a stack of Gator Gulp drinks, then goes through with it when the alligators begin to advance on both him and Bill. They leave, but not before taking some chocolate tadpole crunch ice cream.

When they return home, Bill and Fred share the ice cream with the residents of Ducktown, who treat them with respect and appreciation in response instead of ire.

"Fred's Meltdown" contains examples of:

  • Easily Forgiven: Even after Fred knocks down the whole town's power, they forgive him and Bill after they give everyone chocolate tadpole crunch.
  • Heat Wave: Ducktown goes through a sweltering heatwave in this episode.
  • High-Voltage Death: Ed, Oly, and Waddle think that Fred electrocuted Bill. He did no such thing, however, and the sparks of electricity they saw were from the overload of Fred's numerous devices.
  • Human Ladder: Ed and Oly stack up on top of Waddle so they don't get their feet burnt on the hot pavement. Waddle gets the short end of the stick because he's "got the biggest feet."
  • No Sympathy: Ed couldn't care less about Fred fainting from heatstroke, saying it serves him right for inadvertently causing a town-wide power failure during a heatwave.
