Tropes

  • Accidental Hero: Trakeena returning when she did inadvertently prevents Deviot from accessing the coccoon.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Despite being a spider-squid creature (one who destroyed the original Magna Defender's planet and killed his son, for that matter), Scorpius' formal deathbed with his daughter in attendance is very sad.
    • In addition, he was killed thanks to Deviot tricking him into thinking Trakeena was in danger. He died thinking he was protecting his daughter.
  • Bad Guy Bar: This is definitely not a place for civilized people to hang at.
  • Bar Brawl: Trakeena gets in two, and both are Curb Stomp Battles in different directions.
  • Batman Gambit: Deviot's plot to get rid of Scorpius plays on everyone's expected reactions. He steals an energy cell in front of the Rangers, proclaiming it's part of a plan to destroy the station and that it'll begin in a particular warehouse. He then exploits Scorpius being a Papa Wolf by saying he "discovered" that the Rangers are holding Trakeena prisoner.
  • The Cameo: Past monsters on Onyx include Soccadillo, Rhinoblaster, Waspicable, Fearog, Termitus, a Barillian Bug, Destructoid, and Batarax.
  • Dirty Coward: The thugs that attacked Trakeena got roughed up by Villamax. Once his back was turned, they got ready to try attacking him again. The second he made it clear he already knew what they were doing, they panicked and ran away. They flee again when Trakeena comes back and proves she's no longer a pushover.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Villamax acts this way while training Trakeena.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Decibat appears briefly on Onyx and will reappear later in the season.
  • The End... Or Is It?: As the Rangers enjoy their final victory over Scorpius and relax, Maya senses that a new evil has taken his place.
  • Evil Is Petty: The first thing Trakeena does after completing her training is go back to the bar and curb-stomp the thugs from before.
  • Grievous Bottley Harm: Trakeena tries to break a bottle to use as a weapon, but can't get it to break.
  • I Broke a Nail: While training with swords, Trakeena is livid to find that Villamax broke one of her nails. He quips that means nine more to go and resumes the training. Another nail is broken immediately afterwards.
  • It's Personal:
Trakeena: Who did this to my father?
Deviot: Your father was destroyed by one of your most hated enemies. It was... the Red Ranger.
Trakeena: Then he will pay. All of the Rangers will pay!
  • Last Request: Scorpius says his power will allow Trakeena to conquer the universe.
Scorpius: Be a powerful rule, my sweet.
  • Lethal Chef: Thinking they'll finally have some time to relax, Damon suggests Kai teach him how to cook. Kai doubts there will ever be enough time to do that.
  • Little "No": Trakeena, as Scorpius passes out.
  • Metaphorically True: Deviot is right that Leo delivered the death blow; he's just leaving out that important bit of context where he orchestrated the whole thing and ensured the Rangers couldn't leave the building.
  • Noodle Incident: When Villamax offers to train Trakeena, an annoyed Kegler bemoans, "Not again!"
  • Secret Test of Character: After trying to pull the boulder cart, Trakeena is exhausted. Villamax yells at her to get back to work and kicks her, which prompts her to attack him with the chain and knock him on his ass. That's exactly the fighting spirit he wanted to see.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Maya's warning to the other Rangers about another foe emerging.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Trakeena takes her first after being trained by Villamax.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Most Scorpius turns into energy and disperses, but a remaining tentacle becomes Trakeena's new staff.
  • Training from Hell: Villamax puts Trakeena through the ringer with such exercises as intense swordplay, running after his motorcycle, and hand-to-hand drills.
  • Villain Episode: Focuses almost entirely on Trakeena and Villamax, with the Rangers being almost an afterthought than a main part of the episode.
  • Villainous Vow: After Scorpius dies, Trakeena promises to honor her father's Last Request and to get revenge on the Rangers.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Gal: Despite her refusal to enter the cocoon and mutate, Trakeena still dreams of being by her father's side to conquer and rule.
  • Wham Episode: The Rangers kill Scorpius and Trakeena becomes the new leader of his forces.
