Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E22 "All Hands on Decker"

Go To

Charlotte and Ella throw Chloe a bachelorette party, forcing Dan and Lucifer to work together on a murder at a dog show.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Aborted Declaration of Love: Not "love", exactly, but close enough. Lucifer is about to tell Chloe that he actually learned something and understands that he hasn't been a reliable partner to her, but backtracks when he sees that Chloe isn't wearing the engagement ring anymore.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Dan can't help chuckling when Lucifer says that acting like Chloe would act doesn't leave him the time to do all the foolish, impulsive things he normally does when solving a crime.
  • Becoming the Mask: Lucifer and Dan end up getting a little too into their roles, to the point that Dan-as-Lucifer sneaks into the murderer's home and confronts him about the crime, having figured it all out by trusting his gut, and Lucifer-as-Chloe arrives a little later, having figured out the murderer's identity by studying the paperwork.
  • Big "NO!": Maze, when she sees the Malibu State water polo team boarding the bus.
  • Big "YES!": Everyone else, when they see the Malibu State water polo team boarding the bus.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Lucifer accuses Dan of being afraid to admit his feelings for Charlotte; without missing a beat, Dan turns this around, accusing Lucifer of the same thing regarding Chloe.
  • Cool Big Sis: Ella plays the "you're the sister I never had" card in order to convince Chloe to have a bachelorette party. It ends up getting turned on its head when Ella acts like the responsible, mature older sister while Maze and Linda are arguing with each other and Charlotte is trying to freak Chloe out.
  • Death Glare: Pierce glares daggers at Lucifer and Chloe's backs as they leave the precinct at the end of the episode.
  • Driving Question: For Lucifer, at least: Why did the detective agree to marry Pierce?
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Lucifer, still immersed in his Chloe persona, gives Dan a tirade about how he cannot trust someone so reckless and unreliable for a partner, and how he needs someone who truly has his back... only to pause as he realizes that this is the reason Chloe chose to accept Pierce's marriage proposal.
  • Love Epiphany: Chloe has the reverse. She acknowledges that this hasty wedding is out of character for her, and that she accepted the proposal in the first place not because she loved Pierce (she outright calls him safe), but because she hoped it would turn her into a better, more spontaneous person. When she sees Pierce later that night, she breaks it off.
  • Noodle Incident: What did the Malibu State Water Polo team do to get those charges?
  • No-Sell: Lucifer's Compelling Voice fails to work on the manager of the dog spa because she already has everything she wants in life.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Everyone senses something is up by Maze throwing a "party" involving non-alcoholic drinks and festive decorations while dressed like a housewife.
  • Stag Party: Or rather, Bachelorette Party. Ella asks Maze to organize it while she investigates the latest lead in the case. Charlotte eagerly joins once invited, hoping to get Chloe drunk and questioning her life's choices. But Maze, who doesn't want to ruin the wedding, ends up planning a Disney-esque, child-friendly party that even Trixie can attend. Eventually Charlotte, Linda, and Ella hijack the "party" with a Party Bus, a bar full of booze, and hunky men dancing half-naked. Things go awry when Ella drags Maze, Linda and Charlotte outside only for the bus to drive off with Chloe still inside.
  • What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: Maze snarls to Ella that she really needs this wedding to happen. Ella retorts that it's just one night; what could possibly go wrong?
  • What Would X Do?: Lucifer's plan to understand how Chloe thinks is to walk a mile in her shoes and solve the case like she normally does. A little later, when that doesn't work as well as he expected, he says that he needs to have "a me"; cue him stealing Dan's badge and gun, leaving a wad of cash in his pocket, and telling Dan to act like he would.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Pierce has no qualms using Trixie as a shield against Maze's wrath.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: It's unclear if Maze draws the line at hurting children in general or hurting Trixie (or at least covering her in blood and carnage), but she backs off Pierce when she sees Trixie sleeping next to him.
Maze: Can't use the kid as a human shield forever, Cain. Maybe not tonight... But I am coming for you.
