Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E23 "Quintessential Deckerstar"

Go To

Devin Clay, the wife of world-famous baseball star Forest Clay, is found murdered in what is initially assumed to be a burglary gone wrong. Charlotte, however, recognizes Forest as one of the bad guys from her nightmares and realizes that he's the killer.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Maze can't bring herself to drug Amenadiel when she has the chance. Later, she hesitates when Pierce warns her that killing him will also cause Linda's death.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Lucifer and Chloe have this near the end, complete with beautiful LA scenery in the background.
  • Bluffing the Murderer: As part of her plan to extract a confession from Forest Clay over his past murder of Joanne Foles, Charlotte claims she still has the incriminating bloody duffel bag which her bosses instructed her to destroy. It works.
  • Call-Back: Throughout the episode, Lucifer attempts to recreate his previous moments with Chloe, as a way to deflect Linda's suggestion to straight-up confess his feelings for her already. This includes greeting her by asking if they had sex, playing Heart and Soul on the piano, playing Monopoly with Trixie, and prom dancing.
  • Character Death: Charlotte takes the bullet to save Amenadiel.
  • Continuity Nod: Charlotte's nightmare about being Forced to Watch as a criminal she defended shoots Dan and her kids is exactly as she described her Hell loop back in "Inernal Guinea Pig".
  • Good Feels Good: Charlotte had nothing to gain by putting a serial abuser behind bars. Nevertheless, the knowledge that he'll never hurt another woman again brings a smile to her face.
  • He's Back!: Amenadiel finally gets his wings back.
  • Hurricane of Euphemisms: Lucifer comes up with a number of baseball-related ways to describe having sexual intercourse with someone.
  • It Was with You All Along:
    • Lucifer has been (rather unsuccessfully) trying to get Chloe to choose him over Pierce, only to realize that she did choose him years ago. She doesn't strictly need his help to solve murders; she lets him tag along and puts up with his shenanigans because she wants him near her.
    • Amenadiel comes up with the theory that the powers of celestial beings are based on their subconsciouses and how they feel about themselves. He turns out to be right.
  • Love Revelation Epiphany: After being in denial about his feelings for a long time, Lucifer finally tells Chloe that he's afraid she'd run away if she were to see who he really is. Chloe reassures him that it doesn't matter to her and kisses him.
  • Moment Killer: Lucifer's and Chloe's kiss is quickly interrupted by someone calling Chloe to inform her of Charlotte's death.
  • Mood Whiplash: Amenadiel and Charlotte have a nice chat about their flaws in life... then Pierce comes out of nowhere to shoot the former, only to hit and kill the latter instead. Double this since the scene is alternated with Lucifer and Chloe having their Big Damn Kiss.
  • Motor Mouth: Chloe's over-consumption of caffeine is obvious, and not just from her frazzled hair and bizarre choice of clothes.
  • Plagued by Nightmares: Charlotte is still plagued by nightmares of losing her family, and now Dan is in them as well.
  • Reveal Shot: Amenadiel seemingly takes Charlotte, body and all, to Heaven, but then we cut to Lucifer and Chloe arriving at the crime scene to find Charlotte's lifeless body, revealing that Amenadiel merely took her soul to Heaven.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Dr. Linda urges Lucifer to confess his feelings to Chloe, saying that just because she un-chose Pierce doesn't mean that she chose him. Lucifer hesitates, saying that it's better to let things return to normal.
    • After Chloe blurts out to Ella that Lucifer is both the reason she accepted Pierce's proposal and the reason she later turned it down, Ella chastises herself for being so selfishly focused on the "beautiful Pecker babies" and jumps back to the Deckerstar ship.
  • Taking the Bullet: Charlotte jumps in front of Amenadiel when Pierce shoots him, taking two bullets to the abdomen.
  • Wham Episode: In spades. Lucifer and Chloe confess their feelings to each other, Pierce murders Charlotte, Amenadiel gets his wings back.
  • Wham Shot: Amenadiel unfurling his wings and flying Charlotte's soul to Heaven.
  • White Shirt of Death: Charlotte is wearing a white shirt when she gets shot.
