Recap / Lucifer (2016) S02E15 "Deceptive Little Parasite"

Go To

Lucifer learns that in order to use the Flaming Sword, he must learn to control his emotions. Thankfully for him, the latest victim whose murder he and Detective Decker are investigating happened to work in a school focused on teaching children to control their emotions.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Asshole Victim: Debbie. Despite being so well-liked, she's very judgmental to potential clients. Even her colleagues don't really like her.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Amenadiel places a comforting hand on Lucifer's shoulder when he sees how much it pains his little brother to use the blade. He also shouts at his mother when she tries to force him to continue doing so, then quickly tries to calm the situation and insist there's plenty of time so that Lucifer won't have to right away.
  • Deliberately Cute Child: Trixie is always a cutie, but she amps it up while spending time with Lucifer.
  • Dumb Blonde/Brainless Beauty: The PE teacher isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he's the most good-looking. And it took him a while to comprehend the fact that he has a son despite it already being out in the open.
  • Emotion Suppression: Lucifer is trying to figure out how to get a handle on his emotions. He's really disappointed when the murderer turns out to be the very same person teaching kids how to control their emotions, and that the murder was a crime of passion (i.e. the opposite of control).
  • Heh Heh, You Said "X": More like "you showed X". Chloe hold up a commemorative plate from which a pair of scissors are missing and asks what do the others think (hint: the shape of the identation is a tad suggestive). Lucifer gets cut off by Dan before he can state the obvious.
  • Jerkass: Most of the staff of the school and the students' parents are very elitists. They frown upon single working parents.
  • Mama Bear: The murderer wants her not-so-bright son to have the best schooling she could give.
  • Manly Man and Sensitive Guy: The two fathers.
  • Mistaken for Masturbating: Amenadiel tries to make the sword light up by waving it around. Of course, he has his back to the elevator, and when Lucifer walks in it looks like Amenadiel's doing something else entirely...
  • One-Night-Stand Pregnancy: Madison got pregnant with her son via a one night stand with the PE teacher. Debbie worked out the truth, so Madison killed her to stop her revealing it to Madison's husband.
  • Really Gets Around: The PE teacher has slept with a significant percentage of the mothers of the schjools children. The adultery of it all doesn't seem to have occurred to him.
  • Red Herring: Debbie's murder has nothing to do with the money embezzlement.
  • The Reveal: The reason Mother is so anxious to get back to Heaven is because she doesn't seem to have much time left on Earth.
  • Ship Tease: This episode is clearly enjoying teasing a bit of Chloe/Maze, at one point even having Chloe clearly get into their deception and smile adoringly at Maze from so close their noses are almost touching.
  • Shout-Out: To Bruce Almighty.
Lucifer: And my dad is Morgan Freeman?
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Chloe is really peeved that Lucifer keeps sneaking up on her inside her own house.
Chloe: I am going to tie a bell around your neck at some point.
  • Stepford Smiler: The parents of the students of the school are like this, because they're forced to focus on their kids to get them into the best schools. Trixie admits that Chloe's job and recent near-death scared her, but she hides her feelings so her mother doesn't have to worry about her.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The PE teacher's sexual promiscuity ultimately led to the murder but he had no way to see it coming and seems generally good natured, if very, very dim.
