Recap / Lucifer (2016) S01E06 "Favorite Son"

Go To

"...because you are his favourite son, Samael."

The episode opens with Lucifer singing "Sinnerman" by Nina Simone. While Maze (and the audience) enjoys the music, a security guard is brutally murdered. Meanwhile, Chloe is seriously questioning a suspect who ate chocolate cake. Trixie denies she did it, but given that there's chocolate all over her face, she can't exactly deny it. But it's okay, because Lucifer told her it's alright to take something if she really wants it. Cue disapproving look from Dan.

Lucifer is uninterested in the boring murder of an uninteresting subject, until it turns out that the container belonging to him was stolen, and his reputation (which is more important to him, at the moment) is at risk. Less boring! Unfortunately, despite asking around a biker bar (and who doesn't want their own clothing line when they retire?), they don't learn much until following the owner. Lucifer decides to hunt down the culprit, Renny, himself - but when he does, Renny leaps off a building rather than let Lucifer Mind Rape him.

Amenadiel, meanwhile, is happily posing as Dr. Canaan and manipulating Linda into talking to him. When she speaks to her patient again, it's clear that her words are Amenadiel's more than hers, and Lucifer nearly loses it, punching a hole into the wall, leaving Linda shaken. It won't be the last time he scares her into speechlessness. Lucifer returns to Lux and broods on a balcony, shirtless.

"Someone's got them, Mazikeen. Someone's got my wings."

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Berserk Button: The moment that Linda calls Lucifer "Samael", all of his aloofness vanishes and he begins seething with rage.
  • Blackmail: Trixie manages to coerce Dan into giving her chocolate cake for a year in exchange for helping him sneak out of the house.
  • Blatant Lies: Trixie denies all allegations of having eaten the missing chocolate cake... while having chocolate smears all around her mouth.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Sexual assault and not rape, but the point still stands - Maze knocking Dan out, stripping him naked, and then putting him in Chloe's house is all played for laughs. Maze even convinces Dan to be quiet about it by pointing out that even if anyone believes him, they'll all think he was just weak for getting knocked out by the small female bartender.
  • Driven to Suicide: Renny, with overtones of Better to Die than Be Killed.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: The camera focuses on Lucifer's scarred back just before it's revealed that his wings were stolen.
  • Hidden Depths: Hank just wants to go clean and get his own clothing line.
  • Game Face: It doesn't work as well as it previously has, causing Renny to leap off the building in a panic.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Chloe and Dan team up on Trixie this way, in what seems to be an unintentional example. note
  • It's Personal: Lucifer stays out of the case until it turns out that his container has been stolen.
    • Also, he didn't care that his wings are stolen, but the fact that they stole from him. But at the end, he does care.
  • Jerkass Realization: While ranting at Maze about her simplistic idea of what it takes for a relationship to function (see Zany Scheme, below), Dan realizes that he's been really phoning it in as a father and that he needs to make more of an effort.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Once again, Amenadiel is in fine form here, getting Linda to drive Lucifer into a rage.
  • Metaphorically True: Lucifer tells Chloe his stolen container has Russian dolls. It's not technically a lie, since there really are dolls in there, but that's not all it has.
  • Moral Myopia: Lucifer couldn't care less about the unattractive security guard's death, until it involves him.
  • Mythology Gag: Lucifer's speech to Linda is taken verbatim from one his comic counterpart gives to Morpheus in The Sandman (1989) while leaving Hell.
  • Perp Sweating: Chloe seems to be doing this to someone at the start of the episode. It turns out to be her daughter, who's stolen a piece of chocolate cake.
  • Punch a Wall: Lucifer does this during his session with Linda, putting a sizeable dent in her office wall.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After spending an entire session pushing all of Lucifer's buttons and turning him into a seething angry wreck, he finally loses it after Linda insinuates that he simply needs to rise back up (which he can't do without his recently stolen wings) and he punches the wall.
  • Slasher Smile: Lucifer while he hunts down Renny.
Lucifer: Been a while since I had a good hunt!
  • Suddenly Shouting: Lucifer, when Linda pushes his buttons over his fallen status.
Lucifer: Because they stole them from me!
  • A Threesome Is Hot: Well, foursome. Maze introduces the Britneys to Lucifer. Lucifer has to go to "work" with Chloe, but the Britneys are perfectly happy to keep Maze entertained.
  • Too Much Information: As it turns out, having your prostrate enlarged is unpleasant.
  • Tranquil Fury: Lucifer keeps his tone to a low growl when confronting Renny.
Renny: I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
Lucifer: Oh, you're gonna be more than sorry unless you tell me everything.
  • Zany Scheme: Maze's plan for getting Chloe out of Lucifer's life is to knock her ex-husband unconscious and leave him naked in Chloe's bed. This, she assumes, will result in sex, reconciliation and Chloe losing interest in Lucifer. When it doesn't work, she seems genuinely confused as to why.
