Recap / Lucifer (2016) S01E03 "The Would-Be Prince of Darkness"

Go To

"Finally! The would-be Prince of Darkness!"

Lucifer, seemingly embracing his dark side to the fullest, encourages a distraught, frightened young woman to jump, promising a "warm welcome". Except not really; he's just trying to get her to dive into a pool and join a bunch of other party goers. Job done, he witnesses a pretty young Lady in Red, who's trying to entice up-and-coming football star Ty into having a drink (and more) with her. While Lucifer is able to convince Ty to indulge himself, he finds himself in the midst of yet another murder mystery when the aforementioned woman, Ali, ends up dead.

Oh, and there's someone impersonating Lucifer. He's not exactly thrilled.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Agent Scully: Chloe again, first trying to see if Lucifer's hypnotic abilities can be debunked, and then viewing the security video of Lucifer effortlessly knocking Joe through solid glass.
  • Berserk Button: Lucifer starts to go full devil upon getting to see his impersonator face-to-face, and only stops when Maze points out that it's as if he's punishing himself.
  • Blackmail: What Ty's agent, Joe, attempted on him, being afraid that Ty would leave.
  • Celebrity Impersonator: Justin began to impersonate Lucifer Morningstar just to get free drinks and pick up chicks.
  • Crying After Sex: Apparently a problem that the Lucifer-impersonator has forced onto the real Lucifer's reputation.
  • Deal with the Devil: Lucifer ominously reminds Ty that he owes him one, due to Lucifer helping to clear Ty's name.
  • Dull Surprise: Ty's actor is less than expressive.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Ali, initially hired to help Ty's agent blackmail him, refuses to hand over the sex video she made with him upon realizing that Ty's actually a decent guy. It gets her killed.
  • Fake Brit: In-Universe with Lucifer's impersonator.
  • Heartbreak and Ice Cream: Debra's alibi. Due to it being caught on a security cam, she's cleared.
  • Ironic Echo: "Did I squeeze too hard?"
  • Lousy Lovers Are Losers: Lucifer is outraged that his impersonator is apparently terrible in bed as it's sullying his reputation as a fantastic lover. Apparently the impersonator both ends quickly and cries afterward.
  • Pet the Dog: Ronnie feels responsible for Ali's death, feeling like she should have taken care of her.
  • Oh, Crap!: Ty has a moment of this when Lucifer points out that he owes him.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Joe was afraid Ty would get another agent. After he's revealed as the killer, Ty naturally fires him.
  • She Had a Name: Lucifer doesn't take it well when the murderer calls Ali a bitch:
Her name was Ali Thornton, and you killed her.
  • Superdickery: The episode opens with Lucifer seemingly pressuring a suicidal woman to jump... then she lands in a pool.
  • Super-Strength: Lucifer displays this when he throws the killer through a glass wall with a single hand, tossing him into a desk on the other side.
  • Troll: Maze, who refuses to help Lucifer track down his impersonator, on the basis that "Humans are fascinating."
  • Unexpected Virgin: Lucifer expresses surprise that Ty, a popular, handsome athlete living in Los Angeles, is still a virgin. He and his ex-girlfriend had agreed to wait until marriage, but then they broke up.
  • Yandere: Ty's agent insinuates that his ex-girlfriend, Debra, is this. She's actually a subversion; while she is definitely unstable, she had nothing to do with Ali's murder.
  • Your Costume Needs Work: A woman, claiming to have met Lucifer, calls the real Lucifer an imposter.
    "Even your accent is fake."
