Recap / Friends S 8 E 10 The One With Monicas Boots

Go To

Monica buys an expensive pair of boots, but is unwilling to admit how uncomfortable they are. Meanwhile, Phoebe learns that Ben goes to the same school as Sting's son, and tries to use this to get concert tickets.

  • Agony of the Feet: Monica's fashionable and expensive boots end up being a never-ending pain to wear. She insists whoever made these boots hates feet. She says she can't simply return them and get her money back, due to the heels being bit scuffed and the insides being lined with her blood. She spends most of the episode desperately trying to save face with Chandler, but fresh off an office party with dancing, she cracks when Chandler suggests walking 15 blocks to the subway instead of getting a cab.
  • All for Nothing: Subverted. Even after stalking Sting's family and getting a restraining order set against her, Phoebe is still able to go to the concert because Ross was able to get tickets after all.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Rachel gives the reasons Joey can't just make Dina and Bobby get married: "They don't have a marriage license, there's no witnesses, and the groom only has one shoe."
  • As Herself: Phoebe meets with Sting's wife, Trudie Styler.
  • Big Brother Worship: Dina says she was way more worried about how Joey would react to her pregnancy than how their parents will react to the news.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Joey had claimed to Dina that he waited until he was 25 before losing his virginity. Rachel has this reaction upon hearing that.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Trudie Styler finds out why Phoebe is there, she presses a panic button to summon the police. Phoebe replies with "The Police? Here? A reunion?!"
  • Delicious Distraction: Out of fear that Joey would react poorly to Dina being pregnant, Rachel got a meatball sub for this purpose.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: After hearing Dina's news Joey storms out of the apartment on the grounds that he can't even look at her right now, and then sheepishly comes back for the sub while averting his eyes.
  • Fashion Hurts: Monica insisted on buying a pair of expensive (and uncomfortable) boots over Chandler's objections. She quickly realized she couldn't wear them without wincing. Of course, it didn't help when a party came up and he wanted her to wear them, using her own claim that they "go with everything" against her. When Monica confides in Rachel about how much the boots hurt Rachel offers to take them off her hands because "I haven't felt my feet in years!"
  • Here We Go Again!: Defied. While Chandler is carrying Monica home piggyback, she sees tan versions of her boots at only half off. Chandler starts running home full speed before Monica can repeat her mistake.
  • Hollywood Restraining Order: When Ross gets tickets to Sting's concert for him and Phoebe, she asks if the seats are at least fifty yards from Sting or any member of his family.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Since Dina mentioned the name of the guy that got her pregnant, Joey tracked him down, beat him over the head with a shoe, and dragged him back to the apartment. His big plan is to officiate a Shotgun Wedding, despite Dina's protests, and it's pointed out by Rachel how extremely inappropriate this is. Dina convinces him to back off and just be supportive of her.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When Joey questions them getting knocked up, Rachel tries to interject on Dina and Bobby's behalf, only for them to admit they didn't use protection in the first place. When Joey scoffs at Bobby's would be musical career, Rachel again interjects, only to learn that Bobby's vaunted band Numb Nuts. Rachel is rather displeased that they're not giving her much to work with.
  • Rap Is Crap: The fact that Bobby's band plays Gangsta Rap is the subject of the Laugh Track, although this might have been more the idea of him performing it.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Chandler carries Monica away when she sees that the boots are in a different color for half-off.
  • Shoe Slap: When Rachel notes that Bobby only has one shoe, he tells her that Joey took the other one and hit him with it.
  • Shotgun Wedding: Joey tries to force this on Bobby and Dina. In lieu of a shotgun, Joey simply hit Bobby over the head with the guy's own shoe and dragged him back to his apartment. Ultimately, Joey is convinced to back off.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Phoebe learns private information about Sting's family in her attempt to get concert tickets.
  • Verbal Backspace: Joey tells Dina that she'll just ruin her life trying to raise the baby on her own, which prompts scrutiny from his pregnant friend Rachel. Joey immediately tries to backtrack by saying Rachel is strong and together instead of just some dumb kid, which naturally irritates his sister.
Joey: One pregnant woman at a time!
  • White Sheep: Joey loves all of his sisters, but he takes Dina getting knocked up hard since he always considered her "the good one" that stayed out of trouble and went to college for a couple years.
