Go To

Tropes:

  • Bad Future: We revisit the destroyed Phoenix Parks Pugsley witnessed in the future five episodes ago, and The Watcher reveals how in the future, war between demons and angels will ravage the neutral plane, and how he was created to stop it. With The Watcher gone however, and Norma pledging herself to the demonic royalty for the upcoming war with the angels, things are looking to get even worse.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as Pugsley is about to kill Barney, The Watcher shows up to stop Pugsley and snap him out of it.
  • Body Horror: Fingers' death is not pretty, as he is literally "cut off" and his eyes and mouth retract back into his face and he shrivels up into a dehydrated, mummified arm.
  • Bookends:
    • Like in the beginning of this season, Norma causes Fingers to Freak Out by slapping him in the face. This time on purpose.
    • Pugsley's first words were "Night Night Barney". His final words are the exact same.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: The episode shows a number of events that occurred in past episodes while Barney is time-traveling to prevent Pugsley from becoming The Watcher, including: The mascot parade, Patrick's birthday sleepover, Barney's first death, and Pugsley cloning himself.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Pugsley succumbs to his wounds in Barney's arms.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Pugsley and The Watcher have this when they realize that the only way to beat Fingers is to sacrifice their lives, prompting his master to kill him.
  • Future Me Scares Me: Though he didn't know what or who he was looking at at the time, seeing The Watcher as a pup only a few weeks old left baby Pugsley terrified of him all his life.
  • Heel Realization: Realizing that his past self fears him, The Watcher realizes who really has become the villain before apologizing to Barney.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: To prevent himself from becoming The Watcher and save his friends, both current Pugsley and The Watcher allow Fingers to kill them.
  • Kick the Dog: Fingers, upon capturing everyone, proceeds to taunt Pugsley with Barney's death (which the audience knows is false), and after Barney shows up, tries to force Pugsley into becoming The Watcher and kill Barney and his friends.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Back in "The Tunnel", one of the dinosaur mascots randomly hugged Barney and told him something that couldn't be audibly understood. Here, we see that this was actually Future Barney unsuccessfully trying to warn his past self about the Watcher.
  • "Ray of Hope" Ending: The final scene suggests the possibility that, though he died, Pugsley may not be gone just yet.
  • Ret-Gone: The Watcher's fate with Pugsley's death.
  • Revenge: With the way the angels have personally affected Barney and damaged their lives, Norma kneels before the demonic royal family and declares that she wants a war with the angels and wishes to help the demonic royal family, with the royal family appearing to be willing to accept Norma's pledge of loyalty.
  • The Reveal:
    • The Barney that gave Pugsley a pep talk in Evil Clones are People Too is actually the Barney in this episode, having gone back in time to prevent him from becoming The Watcher.
    • The ring of fire that Pugsley saw in his dreams was his first impression of his future self as The Watcher.
  • Stable Time Loop: While traveling through time, Barney goes to give Pugsley the same pep talk we've seen in Evil Clones Are People Too.
  • This Cannot Be!: When Pael cuts him off and kills him, Fingers can only wail in horror and apologize to his master.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Having Pugsley escape with his friends' help and getting hit in the face sends Fingers chasing after everyone in almost blind fury as they try to escape him. By the time the heroes reach the neutral plane, he has them captured and is holding back in barely-restrained rage, and tries to force Pugsley into becoming The Watcher and kill Barney and the rest of his friends. It only gets worse when The Watcher shows up to save everyone and Pugsley is able to fight off his helmet's control when it cracks.
  • You Have Failed Me: Fingers is killed off by his superior when he ends up making the mistake of killing Pugsley, having himself cut off and shriveling up into a mummified forearm.
