A Plot: After being teased about his old fashioned camera, Brent decides to upgrade. However, he finds that new cameras aren't as easy to operate (especially when you get rid of the manual), so he ends up back with his old one.

B Plot: The town bar gets a new trivia game, and Hank and Lacey are eager to give it a try. When they get off to a rocky start, they enlist Wanda to their team, who somehow makes them worse. Wanda ends up on a team with Davis, where they run roughshod over the competition, much to Hank and Lacey's surprise.

C Plot: Oscar gets fed up with all the lawn ornaments in his neighbor's yard and steals a gnome out of spite. He gets more than he bargained for when Emma discovers the gnome is an Oscar look-alike and uses it to taunt him.

Tropes Referenced:

  • Ambiguous Syntax: The moment that breaks the WAHALA alliance is when Wanda claims this is the case for a question about the first written phonetic language, since "phonetic" tends to refer to speech.
  • Brick Joke: Midway through the episode, Karen is betting on the odds of a crime happening in Dog River while she's at the bar. In The Tag, Karen is informed of Oscar and Emma stealing their neighbour's garden gnomes, and muses that there was a crime happening in Dog River at that time.
  • Character Filibuster: Wanda's intellect proves useless when she joins Hank and Lacey's team, since she launches into extremely long and detailed history lessons for every question, leading to them running out of time to input the answer before she actually gets around to saying what the answer is. The two of them kick her off the team as a result. However, when she joins Davis's team, then she starts answering all the questions lightning fast, possibly as a means of payback against Hank and Lacey for giving her the boot...well, that, and Davis is correctly intuiting at least some, if not all, of the answers while she talks.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
Lacey: I'm just not really drawn to an afternoon of drinking beer and staring at a TV.
    Hank: They got prizes.
    Lacey: Like what?
    Hank: Beer and a TV.
Lacey: Sometimes I feel like we don't connect.
  • Creepy Doll: The gnome that looks like Oscar. The end of the episode reveals that it was one of a pair. The other one, of course, looks like Emma.
  • Distinction Without a Difference:
Oscar: Your mother thinks this gnome looks like me!
    Brent: I don't think so.
    Oscar: [to Emma] See?
Brent: I think you look like that gnome.
  • The Ditz: Hank is a Canadian citizen, yet thinks that Toronto, not Ottawa, is the national capital. He is lambasted pretty hard for it.
  • Gut Feeling: When Wanda teams up with Davis for trivia, Wanda is shown finishing one of her history lessons to Davis, only for him to say he already input that answer using the instincts he gained from life as a cop.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Brent is utterly incapable of operating his new digital camera. Every time he tries to take a picture, either nothing happens or he ends up turning it off.
  • Hypocrite: After the man in the Cold Open insults Brent's camera, Brent mutters "At least I don't drive a stupid yellow car". Not only does Brent drive a yellow car, the whole reason he had his camera out in the first place was to take a picture of the man's car since it was the exact shade of yellow he wanted to paint his own car.
  • Ironic Echo Cut:
Karen: If you're not gonna pay attention, I'll put this gambling stuff away.
Paul: Karen, put this gambling stuff away.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Emma spends the whole episode making fun of Oscar and his lookalike garden gnome, it comes back to bite her in the best way.
Oscar: Meet Gnome Oscar's lawn buddy. She was standing right beside him. I call her "Quiet Emma". No, wait... "Perfect Emma". [kisses it]
Emma: Oh, we won't be keeping that...
  • Literal Metaphor: When Brent is upset with Karen after she takes a bad picture of him, he asks if she and Davis should both be hanging out in the bar, and she asks what the odds of a crime happening in Dog River really are. Then it turns out Karen's actually attempting to bet on those odds.
  • Portmanteau: Hank and Lacey's trivia team starts out as "HALA", using the first two letters of their names. When they add Wanda to the team, they become "WAHALA". When Wanda joins Davis, they create "WANDA" (which everyone just pronounces like Wanda's name, despite Davis insistence that it is pronounced "Wan-DAY".)
  • Read the Freaking Manual: Regarding Brent's troubles operating his new digital camera:
Brent: Yeah, well, I haven't read the manual all the way through yet.
Lacey: You threw it away, didn't you?
    Brent: It was in French.
Lacey: Well, I bet the other side was in English.
Brent: [shrugs] Couldn't tell. It was upside down.
  • Retro Upgrade: In the end, Brent switches back to using his Snapmaster. Hank calls it a downgrade, and specifically points out how it's easier for digital cameras to share pictures with friends, only for Brent to immediately pass Wanda an unflattering picture he just took of Hank.
  • Running Gag: Brent's inability to take a picture with his digital camera. After he fumbles around with it for a few seconds and claims it must be broken, the person he is trying to take a picture of will grab the camera from him and take a (usually unflattering) picture of him effortlessly.
  • Shoddy Knockoff Product: Brent's Snapmaster, a knockoff Polaroid camera.
  • Shout-Out: To The Flintstones.
Man: [regarding Brent's outdated camera] They even make film for that thing?
Brent: No, a little bird carves a picture with his beak.
    Man: Wouldn't be surprised.
  • Spot the Imposter: Emma teases Oscar by pretending its hard to tell the difference between him and the gnome.
  • Tempting Fate: After Wanda makes a wisecrack about Brent's old camera, he sarcastically asks her if she has any more jokes. She is more than happy to oblige with several others.
  • They Don't Make Them Like They Used To: Brent prefers his bulky old camera to a fancy new digital one.
  • Viva Las Vegas!: Davis is planning to go and admits he's only going for the shows.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame:
Brent: I'm not gettin' a new camera just for the sake of gettin' a new camera. This thing works fine.
Oscar: Damn right. Glad to hear you talking some sense for once.
Brent: Wow, I must be way off-base on this.
