Times where a villain's attempt to Screw Destiny and solve their problems through mass-murder completely backfires on them in Comic Books.
- In Avengers: The Children's Crusade, the Scarlet Witch returns but does not find a welcome committee. In fact, the X-Men want to execute her for the genocide of the mutant race, and the Avengers to kill her for the threat she is to reality.
- In one Lanfeust spinoff, an alien shapeshifter race is genocided due to their aggressive attacks on many planets. Only one individual survives, but eventually hatches a plot to control the Galaxy and causes much destruction.
- Paperinik New Adventures: The Evronians are feared across the galaxy for their destruction and enslavement of many different species. This backfired on them when they destroyed the planet Xerba, where a scientist had performed experiments on herself so she could acquire the power of a star. So to their terror the Evronians were suddenly confronted with a virtually unstoppable superbeing gunning after them to avenge her people.
- An interesting variant in one The Sandman story, it's implied that Despair organises the destruction of Krypton by persuading the Anthropomorphic Personification of Rao, the Kryptonian sun, to seed life on the unstable planet. However, Despair also intends for there to be a single Kryptonian left alive, assuming that he will spend his entire life mourning his lost world in despair. That Kryptonian grew up to be Earth's greatest hero, and a symbol of hope to billions of people, so Nice Job Fixing It, Villain.
- Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics) had this for its Endgame storyline: Dr. Robotnik uses the Ultimate Annihilator to erase Knothole from existence in front of Sonic. A combination of Snively's backstabbing, a mini nuke and Sonic's own two fists ensures that Knothole is restored and Robotnik's done away with permanently.
- Superman:
- Several centuries prior to the beginning of The Third Kryptonian, Amalak's home world was devastated by a Kryptonian army squad while Amalak was off world. When Amalak returned and discovered his people had been wiped out, he swore vengeance on all Kryptonians.
- Man of Steel (2018) retcons the destruction of Krypton into being caused by an alien named Rogol Zaar. Driven by hatred towards Kryptonians, Rogol asked the Circle -a clandestine interplanetary peacekeeping council- for help to destroy Krypton. His request was rejected by every member minus Empress Gandelo, who also feared Kryptonians, and secretly provided Rogol with the means to destroy the planet. However, two Kryptonians survived, and in The Killers of Krypton, they expose the crimes of the Circle and get both Rogol Zaar and his backer captured and punished after a tough beatdown.Superman: Kara, we can't just toss everything we don't like into the Phantom Zone.
Supergirl: Not everything. But him? This monster? He says— he confessed to blowing up Krypton. Well that, according to Kryptonian laws, would sentence him to life in the Phantom Zone. Oh yeah, and he destroyed Kandor with his bare hands!! So on behalf of all Kryptonians... $@#$# him. - Legends of the Dead Earth: In Superman: The Man of Steel Annual #5, the Empire wipes out the people of Hydros as part of the Krypton Protocol, an initiative of Luthor the 60th to systemically destroy any planet whose natives are likely to develop superpowers under the sun of another world. Hydros is the 36th planet to be so destroyed. However, Kaleb survives the extermination of his people, having been rescued by the rebellion, and is trained by them to become the new Superman. By making use of his extensive powers, the rebellion is able to score substantial victories against the Empire.
- In the comic version of Wanted, the Big Bad Mister Rictus deliberately invokes this trope, though on a much smaller scale. After murdering an entire family, he leaves a single child alive, banking on the chance that he will grow up to try and take revenge on him. Yes, Mister Rictus really is that bored and crazy.
