Tropes for the film:

  • And Now You Must Marry Me: A subplot involves Shi Potian, a hooligan reluctantly dragged into a martial arts clan conspiracy, being forced to marry a Clan chief's granddaughter, but the wedding is interrupted by an ambush the next day.
  • Bare-Handed Blade Block: Master Xie's qi is so powerful, he can block Shi's huge sword with two fingers.
  • Dual Boss: This film has a live-action Triple Boss example in the form of the White Tiger, Red Bird and Green Dragon, that Shi Potian have to fight, and defeat, at the end of the film.
  • Facial Markings: on Shih's three final opponents, the Three Elites - a trio of deadly martial artists whose faces are painted in red, blue and white, in that order, and with the motif of a burning fire on their foreheads. Their facial markings denotes them to be the toughest boss fights in the finale.
  • Finger Poke of Doom: Master Xie's first scene had him poking four expert fighters in their foreheads, which kills them on the spot with a small bloody hole where he touched. Later on he kills all 20 members of a rival clan by fingerpoking their foreheads, one at a time.
  • Idiot Hero: Shi Potian is definitely not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
  • Jail Bake: A variant: the all-important MacGuffin, a metal plaque, is baked into a pancake. It inevitably ends up in Shih Potian's hands, and he ends up biting into it while hungry.
  • Kneel Before Frodo: Shi, appearing to a beggar and drifter, proving himself as the true successor of his clan. Cue the entire clan, including the seniors, kneeling.
  • Spit Take: There's a scene where Grandmaster Ding questions Shi of his name, only for Shi freely admitting that his name is "Bastard". Cue the Grandmaster spitting his tea.
  • Terrible Trio: The three final villains that poses a threat to the martial art clans, which Shi Potian had to defeat, nicknamed the White Tiger, Red Bird and Green Dragon, serves as the lengthy final boss battle of the film.
  • Training Montage: Shi had to undergo a training scene while being supervised by Master Ding's daughter, to make himself stronger. Naturally he spends much of the sequence goofing off.
  • Wire Fu: Of course.
  • Wuxia: A Lighter and Softer variety.
