Contains examples of:

  • And You Were There: At the end, it is revealed that three imaginary people from Happy Sunshine Camp were based off an actual person that Burn passed by or have met before. For instance: Lucky is based off a street boy who often gets bullied because of his height and Abi is based off the barista named Bie who serves Burn's coffee.
  • Beard of Sorrow: Burn grows an unkept bread in the beginning after his girlfriend breaks up with him and he got fired from his job. Abi trims Burn's beard halfway through the film.
  • Book Ends: The movie both starts and ends with Burn going to the cafe while he is on his way to work. The difference is that it was on Valentine's day at the beginning while at the end it takes place on Christmas and three background characters whose faces weren't shown before now show their faces to reveal that they are the people whose Burn's schizophrenic imagination is based on.
  • Cerebus Syndrome: The first half starts off as your typical Rom Com movie, but then, as the movie progresses, it becomes more dramatic when Burn is revealed to have developed schizophrenia after the car crash.
  • Deadly Bath: Burn nearly drowns in a bathtub while he's hallucinating about him realizing that Abi, her friends, and the resort are not real. Thankfully, his father Roel and his older sister Ellaine manage to pull him out of the tub.
  • Downer Beginning: In the beginning, Burn proposes to his girlfriend but she rejects him and breaks up with him because she is scared of him and his family. This leads Burn to depression and heartbreak, which causes him to not get enough sleep and not work enough. Burn later got fired because he snaps at his boss while in a depressed state. It gets worse when he becomes isolated and decides to drive far away from home.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Burn starts off with fringe hair and stubble. Later, when he becomes depressed because bad things happened to him, his hair grows to shoulder length and becomes disheveled, while he grows a neckbeard. Later during his time at Happy Sunshine Camp, Burn lets Abi cut and trim his beard back to stubble, showing his growth as a person. Near the end, when Burn is revealed to have been hallucinating about Happy Sunshine Camp the whole time, he is shown to have a buzzcut, indicating that he has lost his grip on reality.
  • Hallucinations: Abi, her friends and Happy Sunshine Camp are Burn's hallucinations from having schizophrenia from the car crash.
  • Hearing Voices: An interesting variation. In the middle of the movie, Burn starts hearing his family calling out his name when he's in Happy Sunshine Camp. He's the only one hearing them, and Abi and her friends hear nothing. That's because he is actually hallucinating about Abi and Happy Sunshine Camp the entire time while his family are concerned about his mental health.
  • Important Haircut: During his time at Happy Sunshine Camp, Burn has Abi trim off his beard. This shows his growth and his developed relationship with Abi.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Abi, a perky and energetic girl who owns a remote resort and helps Burn to snap out of his depressed state. Later it turns out that she's a literal dream girl.
  • Meaningful Echo: When Abi switches jobs at the resort in front of Burn, an annoyed Burn asks her "You again?" and Abi replies "Me again. It's just me. Only me.". Later, when Burn meets his barista Bie at the cafe after his mental health recovery, he starts to recognize her a bit and is surprised that she is the one who served him coffee in the beginning. Both said similar lines.
Burn: (After Bie reveals herself as the one who served his coffee) Really? It's you?
Bie: It's me. It's always been me. Just me.
  • Mood Whiplash: When Burn arrives at Happy Sunshine Camp to look for help, he finds Abi, who then stares at him while she notices how sad he is as soft music plays... Until she notices the wounds on his face and shouts "Shit! You're bleeding!" as funny music plays.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Abi wears a lifeguard suit that shows her legs and nice figure. The fact that she's played by a model and beauty queen helps!
  • Once More, with Clarity: When Burn's car cashes into the tree, he managed to leave the car with only a scratch. Halfway through the film, the scene plays out again, but this time the camera zooms in to the inside of the car and reveals a catatonic Burn showing that Burn has been hallucinating about Abi and Happy Sunshine Camp the whole time.
  • Only One Name: During the reopening of Happy Sunshine Camp, Burn asks Abi, her friends and the other villagers for their last names. Neither of them answer him, meaning that they only have have a first name. This makes Burn finally realize that Abi, her friends and Happy Sunshine Camp are hallucinations.
  • The Reveal: Two of them.
    • Also counts as a Plot Twist. Happy Sunshine Camp doesn't exist, and neither do Abi, Handres, Lucky, or Bubut. They are hallucinations that are caused by Burn developing schizophrenia from the car crash.
    • At the end, Abi, Handres, and Lucky are based on actual people that Burn has seen or met before but whom he doesn't know at first.
  • Work Off the Debt: Because he can't pay Abi's resort due to being a runaway, he agrees to work to restore it with the help of her (Abi's) friends Bubut, Handres, and Lucky.
