Dangan Ronpa: Things That Never Happened by ikuzonos is an ongoing Dangan Ronpa fanfiction that features an original cast, all of whom are students of Hope's Peak Academy.

The reader follows Asuka Ishikawa, the Super High School Level Tattoo Artist, who appears to hate the school. Things take a turn for the worse when she awakens in a mysterious location, with the threat of death hanging overhead. Who will survive?

...It might not be as simple as you think.

The fic takes on a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' type story at a certain point; the reader gets to make a choice for the protagonist, and as a result of this, different people will die.

Dangan Ronpa: Things That Never Happened contains examples of:

  • Alternate Timeline: The result of being allowed to make your own decisions at various points. Currently, Chapter Three has split into the Archangel (Side Blue) route, and the Belladonna (Side Red) route.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Yumiko, in the middle of the second trial.
  • Anyone Can Die: A trope common enough in Danganronpa that gets taken up to eleven with the fic's gimmick.
  • Big Bad: Monokuma, as usual, is the one running the Deadly Game.
  • Body of the Week: In true Dangan Ronpa fashion!
  • Butterfly of Doom: You get to make major decisions for Asuka! Too bad they always end with people dying.
  • Characters Dropping Like Flies: Pretty standard for the source material, which carries over into this.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Saki and Yumiko.
  • Closed Circle: The hotel is perched on top of a cliff with a drop of over a hundred feet.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Hikari is tied to a rising platform similar to a floating garden and is attacked by snakes until one of them bites her throat out.
  • Dark Secret: No ‘wetting the bed until the fifth grade’ bullshit here. Everyone has a secret that could legitimately drive them to murder in order to stop it from getting out.
    • The only person to avert this is Hikari- while she’s already dead when the secret motive is revealed, Word of God says that her secret would have been that she’s never been kissed.
  • Empty Chair Memorial: Like in the games proper, the deceased students are represented in trial by memorial photo with their faces crossed out.
  • Evidence Scavenger Hunt: After each murder, Asuka is tasked with collecting evidence to solve the case, much like in the games proper.
  • Heroic BSoD: Yumiko goes through this when Saki’s body is discovered.
  • Kill the Cutie: Hikari Matsumoto, as the chapter one culprit is the first to fall into this, but they won't be the last.
    • From the Archangel route, Ayano and Shun definitely qualify. On the Belladonna route, Masuyo.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Everyone’s missing three years worth of memories from the time they spent at Hope’s Peak Academy, and then some. Or so they believe.
    • The Archangel route sheds some light on this. Everyone is missing closer to nine months of memory, and is likely to not be a student of Hope's Peak Academy at all.
  • Lights Off, Somebody Dies: What Monokuma attempts to invoke by turning off the lobby lights at night.
  • Missing Mom: Asuka and Masuyo don't have a clue where their respective mothers are.
  • Murder Mystery: Self-explanatory
  • My God, What Have I Done?: The first culprit hits this pretty hard. Hikari killed Kousuke in an attempt to stop him from killing Natsumi... only to find out that he wouldn't have gone through with it. And just prior to that, Natsumi herself pretended to be dying in an attempt to force a confession. Believing that she had killed the one person she was trying protect was enough to break her.
    • Natsumi goes through this too as a result of her actions in the trial. After finding out that Hikari was trying to keep her alive, despite barely knowing her, she shows genuine remorse for her Fake Kill Scare.
  • The Mole: Chapter 3 heavily implies that there is one among the cast, and Chapter 4 outright confirms it.
    • The Sacrificial (Silver) route reveals their identity; Natsumi Uchiyama, who reveals this in a posthumous letter.
  • The Power of Hate: Saki really, really hates Minoru.
    • Starting in the Martyrdom route, everyone suddenly finds themselves despising Hachirou, though they can't figure out why.
    • Yumiko absolutely despises Hiroki, Natsumi, and Arata for their respective roles in Saki's death.
  • Thicker Than Water: Averted. Asuka holds deep-seated disdain towards her abusive mother. See Missing Mom above.
  • Tragic Keepsake: After they die, Asuka keeps Kousuke's clipboard and Hikari's hat.
    • This list extends to Saki's notebook and bow, and Hiroki's secret slip after the second trial, then Shun's hoodie string, Ayano's necklace, and Yumiko's beanie from Chapter 3's Archangel trial, or Itsuki's lighter and Masuyo's sunglasses from the parallel Belladonna trial. She briefly holds onto Hachirou's pocket watch, but smashes it following the Belladonna trial's conclusion.
    • From Chapter Four, there's the pins from Arata's typewriter in Martyrdom, Kenta's tie and a letter from Natsumi in Sacrificial, and Yumiko's hat and pins from Arata's typewriter in Torpor.
    • Chapter Five's Autumn route has Asuka start to wear Natsumi's jacket while the Spring route has Ayano's eyepatch and Kenta's tie.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Kazue in 2-2. Luckily, unlike the last person to violently throw up, they don't die.
  • Win Your Freedom: The killing game in a nutshell.
  • You All Meet in a Cell: Everyone meets for what they believe is the first time at the mysterious hotel.
  • You Monster!: Arata gets this when their secret is revealed in Chapter 3.
  • You Wake Up in a Room: Or in this case, on a hill.
