Fanfic / Origin of the Pixies

Go To

Origin of the Pixies is a The Fairly OddParents! fanfiction.

When one has access to information on the Wolbachia pipientis bacteria and its curious ability to kill off the infected male insects and cause asexual reproduction in the females who remain, one tends to get a little carried away.

Fountainpenguin based Origin of the Pixies around the idea that the Head Pixie (aka Fergus Whimsifinado), a fairy child born with an odd "square" quirk in his genes, was later infected with this bacteria and inadvertently fell into the role of becoming founder of an entire, growing species. He does not take it too well.

Tropes present in Origin of the Pixies include:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When Fergus lists the ways one can be kicked from the Fairy Academy, they follow along the lines of plagiarism and murder before ending with "jayflying".
  • Blind Obedience: Sanderson.
  • Call-Back: Several.
    • Wish Fixers is the family therapy business.
    • Fergus, Sparkle, and Leonard attend the bowling ball of the princess, as mentioned in the "Fairy Tales" episode.
    • Fairies being forbidden from having children after Cosmo's birth complicates issues regarding Sanderson.
  • Comeback Tomorrow: Two days pass before Fergus calls Ambrosine out on his use of the phrase "I'm negatively reinforcing you" as opposed to "I'm negatively punishing you".
  • Challenging the Chief: Fergus challenges Ambrosine over the issue of what he wants to study in school versus what he is expected to.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • The subject of sacrificing your firstborn to Mother Nature and Father Time first comes up when Fergus and Laika visit the glass tower on their date and comes up again when Fergus returns there with Sanderson.
    • Fergus wears a selkie coat (and meets the selkie whom it belongs to) during a snow storm and uses the coat to summon her later when he's looking for a new place to stay.
  • Chekhov's Classroom: Fergus insisted upon reading about fairies rather than will o' the wisps and how to outmaneuver them and avoid their Kiss of Frost which would have been really useful to know when he ran across Kalysta.
  • Churchgoing Villain: Fergus insists on taking his offspring to be baptized, particularly because it's tradition to do so.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: The Anti-Pixies as whole.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The cannon-like structure seen before in the Head Pixie's forehead during "The Fairly Oddlympics" functions as an important aspect of Fairy anatomy.
    • Patio World is a location in the story.
    • The first prophecy Polly recites is the one Cosmo recites in "Country Clubbed", and he also transcribes all his prophecies on toilet paper.
    • The Novakiin science museum appears to be the same museum from "When L.O.S.E.R.S. Attack".
    • H.P.'s hat is also a pen.
  • Doorstopper: In March 2020 its 36th chapter put it at 500,000 words, out of a total of 66 planned.
  • Drunk on Milk: Sugar seems to have a similar effect on many magical creatures as alcohol.
  • Fantastic Caste System: The Fairies seem to have a complicated social structure based on species, as explained here and here.
  • Fantastic Racism: With the caste system in play, Fairy society often makes it difficult for one to climb the social ladder. The brownie subspecies function as the usual scapegoats, though Anti-Fairies are regular targets too.
  • Fantastic Slurs: Being called a "brownie-kisser" is a low blow.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Freedom appears to be an ideal Fergus values greatly.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Fergus and Nephel, mostly.
  • Interspecies Friendship: Fergus managed to befriend several humans during his time spent travelling Earth.
  • Klingon Promotion: Thanks to pheromones, gynes tend to garner respect in an area once the previously-dominant gyne has been eliminated.
  • Must Have Caffeine: Fergus is very dependent upon his morning coffee and struggles with withdrawal when he goes to long without it.
  • Nailed to the Wagon: Fergus is left without caffeine after he leaves Great Sidhe.
  • Neat Freak: Sanderson, apparently, from the time he was just a day old. Fergus shows several instances of this too.
  • Nepotism: Ironically, Fergus outright states that he doesn't believe in hiring employees based on their relation to him.
  • Parental Abandonment: An activity that Fergus tends to engage in quite often.
  • Promotion to Parent:
    • Fergus with Sanderson. And Hawkins. And Wilcox. And so on.
    • Additionally, Ambrosine was a teenage dad.
  • Tell Me About My Father: Hawkins.
  • Those Two Guys: Sparkle and Polly.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Fergus is writing everything down for the other pixies to someday read. He is not always honest about his emotions or motivations as he tells the story, but the truth can be inferred by his actions.
  • Villain Protagonist: Fergus seems to fit this quite well.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Also Sanderson.
  • Worldbuilding: The author has put a lot of their world-building details on their Tumblr page.
  • Xeno Fiction: Pixies and fairies are not portrayed as just being humans with magic and wings. They are shown as having a lot more in common with insects on many subjects.
