Fanfic / EON: Pelagial

Go To

EON: Pelagial is a ONE. fanfiction written by SaltedSour and published on Archive of our Own. You can read it here.

It follows Airy sending the contestants (and himself) back after he almost drowned. The story goes from "Liam and Bryce trying to reach Amelia, with Airy tagging along" to "The worst family reunion in history".

The title is a reference to the Pelagial album (and also an anagram of ONE), and each chapter title is a pelagic layer, with unique secondary titles for each of the chapters.

Eon: Pelagial contains examples of:

  • Alliterative Name: Downplayed, but phonetically alliterative for Chris Klarus.
  • Batter Up!: Hunter uses a baseball bat as his weapon of choice.
  • Death Is Cheap: It's complicated. On one hand, if you have the correct code you can go back to your universe after you die. On the other hand, if you don't, you'll have to find it, which is nigh-impossible.
    • You also run the risk of going to a universe that can change you permanently, as was the case for Silas/Abstracty.
  • Doom Magnet: Almost all of Hunter's entire immediate family have died in a car crash, save for Chris.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Lucius does this often, understandable as he killed his wife in a car accident and fled the country.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Airy's remaining eye is considered this.
  • Family Disunion: It got so bad that Hunter even expresses how he felt he was better off not knowing his brother was alive.
Hunter: Man, do I wish none of this actually happened.
  • Fiery Redhead: Inverted. In the human designs, Hunter's hair is dyed blue.
  • Half-Sibling Angst: Averted, Chris and Hunter get along just fine, mostly due to Hunter's desperate attempts to have any family.
  • Happy Marriage Charade: Chandler and Lisa, at least until Chandler snaps.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Hunter. As soon as he finds out that his younger brother is alive and injured, it doesn't matter how far away you are or how well you hide, he will beat you senseless. It gets awkward for him when Airy is the one who has done wrong to his "kidnappers".
  • Legally Dead: If a character dies, or is assumed to die, then they fit this trope. All because in EON, Death Is (Relatively) Cheap.
  • Light Is Not Good: Several flashbacks have implied someone else used the computer before Airy, and that they pretended they were the Sun itself. It's also implied they killed someone to "send them home".
  • Meaningful Name: Several.
    • The Lanthorne family are all objects related to light.
    • Hunter spends the first few chapters stalking Liam and Bryce. It's even Lampshaded in a chapter.
    • Chris' surname is Klarus, a brand of flashlight.
    • Same goes for Alex's surname, Stanley.
    • Chandler is a title for someone who makes candles. Chandler is also the name of a candle.
  • Meaningful Rename: Lucius Relict, Lucius relating to light and relict being an archaic term for widow. It's fitting for Chandler.
  • Metaphorically True: Silas did get sent on their way home, just without a code.
  • No Animosity in the Afterlife: Inverted for Kairos who, after dying to someone he trusted (and underestimated), is full of nothing but revenge.
  • Only One Afterlife: When you die, you go to the Waiting Room. If you can't find the radio, you're effectively stuck there with visions of your loved ones leading you further away from it.
    • If you don't see any illusions, it just gets darker the further away you go, and there's no landmarks in sight to guide you back. Lisa has been walking alone for over a decade.
  • Parental Abandonment: Chandler pulls this off to avoid repercussions for killing Lisa.
  • Parental Neglect: In the rainbow river scene, Chandler deliberately ignored Hunter in one of the memories, looking at a television. It comes back to bite Hunter as he stands down from a fight because of Chandler finally looking at him.
  • Parents Know Their Children: Chandler recognised Airy, while the latter was simply confused.
  • Playing with Fire: Hunter's modus operandi is setting himself on fire as he fights in the dark.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Liam and Bryce looked oddly suspicious to Chris, which made him contact the only person he trusted... Hunter.
  • Self-Applied Nickname: Airy was Hunter's Affectionate Nickname for his younger brother, Aaron. The meaning is distorted enough to make Hunter uncomfortable.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Airy sinks like a stone in the first chapter since he's made out of metal. He manages to survive after Liam helps him out.
    • Later, another character also drowns for the same reason.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: Specifically Murder-Suicide with Lisa and Chandler. Chandler, not being made out of glass, survived.
  • Weird Sun: The Sun on the plane appears and disappears based on if the plug is connected. It doesn't turn dark, rather a heavy fog fills the plane.
