Fanfic / All Wo-rk and No Play: An Abyssal's Trials in the Job Market

Go To

The Jellyfish Princess' fleet has been crushed, a joint task force scouring Bikini Atoll and freeing Saratoga from the clutches of the Abyss. In their hurry to withdraw, however, they left the Abyssal CFS Trinitite, a Wo-class Carrier with no allies and an armada of questions.

All Wo-rk and No Play by PyrrhicSteel is a KanColle fanfic that explores what would happen if an Abyssal infiltrated the United States to try and find her Princess, who has become a Shipgirl and joined humanity.

All Wo-rk and No Play: An Abyssal's Trials in the Job Market contains examples of:

  • Burger Fool: Trinitite eventually lands a job at a Jack-in-the-Box.
  • Crack is Cheaper: Trinitite is horrified at the price of certain wargame miniatures when a coworker invites her to play with his friends.
  • Cutting Corners: The lead electrician in the building Trinitite is assigned to pre-cuts wires before installing them under the belief that it will allow the spool of wire to last longer.
  • Death Is Cheap: Shipgirls and Abyssals that sink can be resummoned by their respective sides in relatively short order. This is why the human navies are working on turning Abyssal Princesses as much as possible, as it denies the Abyssals a powerful asset for good.
  • Debt Detester: According to Trinitite, Abyssals despise being in debt to another, however she still pledges that one day she will return the favor to Elizabeth for helping her. She's also hesitant to accept aid from anyone without due compensation, given that other Abyssals would take full advantage of such open-ended debts.
  • Dramatic Irony: Trinitite successfully makes landfall in the Pacific Northwest of the US, shakes off her initial pursuers, and starts working on trying to find out where her mother is in the country. Meanwhile and unrelatedly, Saratoga's first assignment has her sent to Japan to help train their Shipgirls.
  • Fire-Breathing Diner: Trinitite's first exposure to curry caused her to believe she was on fire to the point of rallying her damage control team, and her exposure to Tabasco ended just as poorlynote . Since then she has had a fear of spicy foods.
  • Fish out of Water: Trinitite, who has until now only seen the ruins of human civilization in the aftermath of Abyssal occupation, now has to figure out how to blend in with humans.
  • Food Porn: Almost every single meal is something that Trinitite is encountering for the first time in her life, Thus, they're given lavish but clinical descriptions followed by her very pleased reactions to the variety of tastes. The description of a humble bacon cheeseburger must be read to be believed.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: All Abyssals have these - it's quite a shock to the team hunting Trinitite when they learn she can turn it off at will, making finding her among the Washington populace much harder. Comes back to bite her when a cop wakes her up in the middle of the night, thinking she's a regular refugee camping in some woods, and she has them on when she opens her eyes.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Many Abyssal Princesses are the souls of ships sunk in ways that said souls considered disrespectful or otherwise rage-inducing. However, if defeated, there is a chance to purge the Abyss's influence and bring them back around to humanity's side. This happens to Jellyfish Princess, the Abyssal version of USS Saratoga, and kicks off the plot.
  • I Want Them Alive!: The Navy determines they need to take Trinitite into custody rather than sinking her, because her demonstrated ability to infiltrate human society would be a nightmare if she was killed, then re-summoned under a hostile Abyssal Princess.
  • Mugging the Monster: A Mountain Lion attempted to attack Trinitite when she was in the forest. It ended poorly...for the lion.
As an added bonus, it seemed Trinitite wasn’t going to starve this week.
  • Mundane Luxury: Trinitite's ongoing amazement at human food leads to the Food Porn described above, but she also eventually finds she quite enjoys having a pillow to rest her head on rather than a tree root or chunk of concrete.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: Thanks to her Fish out of Water status, Trinitite has to figure out how many things that humans take for granted work. A humble automatic door completely bewilders her, for one example.
  • Nature Versus Nurture: Debated by the squad hunting Trinitite, as she does not exhibit "normal" Abyssal behavior (re: she doesn't kill humans indiscriminately). One character postulates that "normal" Abyssal behavior may even be a conditioned action enforced by the Princess they serve, rather than instinctual.
  • Oh, Crap!: Any human that realizes who/what Trinitite really is. Trinitite's reaction when she realizes they know, as well as when she encounters certain aspects of humanity, like how many nuclear weapons the humans have.
  • Parental Substitute: Jellyfish Princess served as this to Trinitite and the other abyssals of the Crossroads fleet.
    • Ironically, a chapter from Saratoga's point of view reveals that, for all that Jellyfish doted on her "daughters", her own maternal feelings ran rather shallow, viewing them more as stand-ins for the Essex carriers she was convinced had been destroyed because of Saratoga's "failure" in Operation Crossroads. More amusingly, when Murray later updates Saratoga on their hunt for Trinitite, her internal monologue matches up with that of a concerned parent.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Trinitite hits hers when a Karen who ordered a full Thanksgiving feast in the middle of the lunch rush begins threatening her coworkers when they don't drop everything and prepare the order immediately. This causes Trinitite to slam her fist on the counter, breaking it, and telling off the Karen, inadvertently ruining her disguise.
  • Skin-Tone Disguise: To blend in among humans, Trinitite uses makeup to hide her Abyssal Undeathly Pallor.
  • Sympathetic Inspector Antagonist: Lt. Cmdr Murray and Nashville serve as this, as for all that they know, having an Abyssal Aircraft Carrier loose in the continental US is a threat to the nation.
  • Snipe Hunt: The above electrician eventually sends Trinitite to get some "Circuit Breaker Coolant" as a way to get rid of her after her strength snaps several of said pre-cut wires.
  • Wiki Walk: Trinitite goes on an epic one in Chapter 21, going from "List of Aircraft Carriers of the United States Navy" to an article about the Civil War Ironclad 'Atlanta'.
