Oz is a Marvel Comics adaptation of L. Frank Baum's Land of Oz books featuring art by Skottie Young. The series covers the first six books (with the sixth book being Baum's original intended ending of the Oz franchise): The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, The Road to Oz, and The Emerald City of Oz.

Not to be confused with the HBO series OZ.

This series provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Dye-Job:
    • Dorothy has no known hair color in the text. The original The Wonderful Wizard of Oz illustrations by W.W. Denslow depicts her as a brunette with Girlish Pigtails. Starting with Ozma of Oz, John R. Neill began depicting as a blonde with a bob haircut, which has been her most common hairstyle in future reprints of the books. The Marvel comics go with a middle ground: Dorothy has a dirty blonde color, starts off with pigtails, and later changes to a bob.
    • Ozma is depicted with her standard brunette design. This originates from John R. Neill's Ozma of Oz illustrations. Ozma's original design as described in The Marvelous Land of Oz (and John R. Neill's illustrations for that book) depict her as a blonde. Ozma's eyes are also blue instead of their canon green.
  • Age Lift: Ozma's age changes in John R. Neill's illustrations, even in the same book. The Marvel comics go with the depiction of Ozma being Dorothy's age.
  • Comic-Book Adaptation: 2009's Oz is Marvel Comics' second adaptation of Land of Oz books. It covers the first six books.
  • Gondor Calls for Aid: Inverted in the adaptation of the seventh book. The Nome King sends his General to persuade the Whimsies to help him to attack Oz, but the General goes beyond his orders to recruit the Growleywogs and Phanfasms as well. The Nome King is not pleased about it.
