Main Characters
Chris Vertin
- Brilliant, but Lazy: His Fortelle playing is generally regarded as very good but he lacks the will to continue on to become a professional musician.
- Nice Guy: Beneath his rough exterior, he is one of these.
- No Social Skills: Despite being enrolled for three years and nearing graduation, he has no social presence at the school to speak of, and his interactions among his peers are limited to Torta (who already knows him from before attending the school) and Asino. His awkwardness in this regard is primarily exemplified during his first visit to the Cenacolo, where he comes into a room full of students and avoids interacting with any of them, despite the reason for his visit being to search for a vocalist partner for his graduation performance.
- Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Suffers from this due to witnessing the vehicular accident that put Arietta in a coma.
Tortinita "Torta" Fine
- Dogged Nice Guy: to... interesting... levels as revealed in Al Fine mode.
- Evil Twin: If you consider Torta "evil" for lying a lot to Chris about Arietta being in a coma for that long. Although that would stretch the definition of "evil" by a very long way.
- Lethal Chef: in contrast to her sister Arietta. Although she's actually perfectly competent after a couple of years of cookery and baking lessons in order to mimic Arietta. She just used to suck.
- Twin Switch: All of Arietta's appearances in the various routes is actually Torta in disguise, who adopted the masquerade to prevent Chris from finding out about Arietta's current state in a coma, given that he forgot about her being run over by a vehicle due to Trauma-Induced Amnesia. She also wrote letters to Chris under Arietta's name as well.
- Unlucky Childhood Friend: Torta has liked Chris since they were kids, but he ends up hooking up with her sister at a young age, despite everyone's belief that Torta and Chris are more compatible. She does eventually hook up with him at the end of her Al Fine route.
Arietta "Arie" Fine
- Dying Dream: Being stuck in this for the last three years while in her coma, she takes the form of Phorni.
- The Ghost: Remains this until you play Torta's route. Actually it's just Torta pretending to be Arietta, while also writing letters to Chris to maintain the masquerade. The real Ari doesn't show up until the epilogue of the Golden Ending or was there all along depending on your point of view.
Falsita "Fal" Fawcett
- Manipulative Bastard: Uses Asino to get closer to Chris so she can use Chris as her Fortelle accompaniment. However she falls in love with Chris and he with her anyway, and Chris eventually doesn't mind being "used" by her. Also, if you don't take her route, she makes Asino do the recital with her freshman brother, all as a deal so he could actually acquaint with her more in the future.
Liselsia "Lise" Cesarini
- Shrinking Violet: As she has to sing away from other people as She's officially a Fortelle player
Phorni
- But Now I Must Go: She eventually disappears without warning in all of the standard routes as Chris gets closer with one of the other girls, the implication being that she decides to pass on and let Chris go upon knowing that he will be able to move on with someone else by his side. This doesn't happen if you are playing her route.
- Fairy Companion: Actually an astral projection. She's actually Arietta in disguise.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Being Arietta in disguise, she knows that she may never wake up from her coma and could pass away at any moment. As such, she tries to get Chris to hook up with the other characters in every route but her own, whilst keeping the truth from him because he wouldn't move on from her otherwise.
Side Characters
Asino Altiele
- Chick Magnet: He's implied to be such through his flirtatious interactions with several female background characters as he tries to find his partner for his own Fortelle graduation recital.
Cordell
Grave Cesarini
- Insufferable Genius: He is acknowledged as a genius at the Fortelle though his actions take him past insufferable and right into evil.
- Karma Houdini: Never ends up suffering from his actions at all.
