    Col. Alexei Zaysen

Colonel Alexei Zaysen

Played By: Marc de Jonge

Commanding officer of the Soviet motorized rifle unit, stationed in the area.

  • Beard of Evil: You can't really blame his soldiers for being unkempt and unshaven with a commander like this...
  • Big Bad: The villain behind the invasion of Afghanistan.
  • Colonel Badass: Does not even think twice before flying a combat helicopter against a tank!
  • Colonel Kilgore: As a Dirty Communist officer, he enjoys torturing his prisoners for the sake of it.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Both Podovsky and him are senior officers in Soviet Army, but unlike the calm and cunning Podovsky, Zaysen is nothing short of brutal unhinged sociopath.
  • Dirty Communists: Like the Big Bad before him, he is also a superior within the Soviet Army.
  • Lack of Empathy: He has no qualms with committing mass murder or Cold-Blooded Torture to get what he wants.
  • Sociopathic Soldier: Leading the air assaults against local villages with no regard to civilian casualties? Check. Torturing prisoners without even trying to use other means of interrogation? Check. Don't even pretending that he is fighting for just cause and doing the right thing? Check.
  • Viler New Villain: At the time in contrast to the prior two villains. Succeeding villains Pa Tee Tint and Hugo would both usurp him as this.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He grows increasingly unhinged after constantly failing to kill Rambo.
  • We Have Ways of Making You Talk: Averted, in contrast with previous installment. Zaysen seems to be more interested in torturing people for the sake of it, rather than in meaningful interrogation.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Makes it a habit of gunning down villages, even disguising mines as toys as a means to kill helpless children. Masoud also informed Rambo that Zaysen had numerous children (including infants) to be captured and burned in flames. Even during Rambo's failed attempt to rescue Trautman, Zaysen wastes no time in gunning down Hamid, a orphaned Mujahideen child who was aiding Rambo. Fortunately, Hamid was only shot at the leg before he was rescued by Rambo.

    Kourov

Kourov

Played By: Randy Ranney

Right-hand man of Colonel Zaysen.

  • Asshole Victim: As he is even more unsympathetic, that Yushin, his comeuppance is more than deserved.
  • Beard of Evil: A full beard, and being all too eager to kill anyone who gets in his way.
  • The Brute: Similar to Yushin, except he's all fat instead of muscle, but just as deadly!
  • Dirty Communists: Like The Dragon before him, he is serving under his superior within the Soviet Army.
  • Fat Bastard: In fact, so fat, that one can wonder, how exactly he passed physical fitness tests and able to maintain his belly.
  • The Dragon: Like Yushin, he is undyingly loyal to Zaysen.
  • Giant Mook: A gigantic Spetsnaz commando a few times larger than Rambo.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He walks around with a bandolier of grenades on him. That ends up being his own undoing.
  • Kevlard: His oversized girth allows him to tank an exploding arrow fired from Rambo (well, besides using a random Spetsnaz as a Human Shield) and later when fighting Rambo hand-to-hand, absorbs multiple hits from Rambo while barely flinching.
  • Mook Lieutenant: Often seen leading Spetsnaz troops around, and is in charge of the platoon hunting after Rambo and Trautman.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Rambo kills him by setting off his grenades and kicking him into a cave.
  • Villain Ball: He would've ended the whole movie right there and then when Rambo tries climbing out a hole - by shoving his boot into Rambo's face and sending the latter falling to death. But instead Kourov decides to pull Rambo out for a physical fight.
