openConsidering making adaptation subpages Print Comic
I'm considering making Comic Book subpages for Animorphs and/or Wings of Fire that cover tropes exclusive to their graphic novel adaptations (as part of Scholastic's Graphix line), but I can't think of enough tropes for either. Is there a minimum number of tropes recommended for a work page?
openIndexing a work with an uncertain (2019/2020) release date
When I created Pinball.Stranger Things last year, I indexed it under The New '10s because it was revealed in December 2019, with at least outside forum post noting that someone had received a machine before 2020 began. Now, however, I find myself wondering if I should categorize and index it as a 2020 release instead, as the vast majority of machines were manufactured and released that year. (Long story short: there are three different versions of the game, all of which entered production at different times. The Internet Pinball Database lists the Pro model as beginning manufacturing in December 2019, though the Premium and Limited models started in early 2020. In addition, the TWIPYs - the most prominent pinball awards show as of present - listed it among other 2020 pinball games for their most recent ceremony.)
Edited by BlueGuyopenEdit war breaking out over gross attitudes in AEW Characters page
Been having a small problem with a troper called Machinegun 1973 in the All Elite Wrestling page. I added the following to the character entry for former Women's champion Hikaru Shida:
- Wardrobe Malfunction: During Shida's final title defence at Double or Nothing 2021 against Britt Baker, there was a stretch of the match where the action noticeably slumped and became slow and awkward. What had actually happened was that Shida's top was damaged and started to come undone, forcing the two women to be extremely careful until they could manage to resecure it, for fear of her accidentally flashing the crowd. Fortunately, they managed to avoid any inappropriate accidents.
After I added it, Machinegun 1973 changed the last line to say "Unfortunately" instead. That's extremely inappropriate, complaining about not getting to see a girl's breasts accidentally fall out of her top in public, so I changed it back. Of course, he changed it again. So I changed it back AGAIN, this time sending him a message telling him to stop being gross and putting a marked-out message in warning people not to revert it again.
And just now, he sent me a reply to the message I sent him which telegraphs to me pretty strongly that he doesn't give a damn about being appropriate and WILL change it again: "I ain't being gross about that you should go to reddit in that case". So apparently he's playing the "whiny SJW" card against me.
I didn't want to make a big thing about this, I was just planning to put in a preemptive notification so people could be aware of it just in case he decided to jump the gun and report ME for edit warring instead, but his attitude now is really getting up my nose. Can someone have a quiet word with this guy?
Edited by ArcaneAzmadiopen Strega Nona on Main Literature
The Strega Nona page was erroneously placed on the Main namespace. I’ve copied the valid parts to a Literature page, but I’m not sure how to cut pages, so I’m reaching out to ask someone to do so.
EDIT: Ok, it’s been done! Thanks everyone!
Edited by Roloman212openBlank Recap Pages
So when checking the "new page" edits for today, I stumbled upon a troper named Sabrinamichelle4ever and their apparent hobby...of just creating dozens upon dozens of blank recap pages for the show 6teen.
I'd list them all, but that'd be an exercise in insanity. I sent a stub notifier for a random one of them, but it's probably best if you just see for yourself.
openA large tangent about homebrew
I can't find the Useful Notes cleanup thread and last time I went there I got no response, so asking here.
UsefulNotes.Play Station Vita has a couple very detailed paragraphs about its history with homebrew. While it's probably worth noting, I feel like it should be stripped down significantly to not outright name the homebrew programs. Thoughts?
Edited by KarxridaopenDoes Trans Tribulations cover characters who deal with gender dysphoria but aren't trans?
I considered Trans Tribulations as a potential trope to add to The Yellow Bag since Tropes Are Flexible, but felt the need to ask first.
For context, the main character Raquel isn't transgender but does deal with gender dysphoria, with one of her big wishes being that she was born a boy instead of a girl (due to society treating men much better). By the end of the story, however, she grows to love herself and gets rid of that wish.
openOdd Troper History?
New Troper Harry-Hills-Car has a kind of odd edit history. All three pages they've edited no longer exist—or at least, their page histories have 0 edits. The only page that has any content is for "Danganronpa 69", and it's just "..."
Is this Troper creating pages that are immediately cutlisted, or just doing nothing edits to pages that don't really exist?
openIs Harry Potter an Adaptational Badass? Film
Much like the DC Extended Universe, the Harry Potter saga is no stranger to controversy and this time I wanna focus on our boy Harry. His character page lists him as an Adaptational Badass under the following conditions:
- In the first book, Harry is barely able to hold off Quirrell, with the effort nearly proving fatal. In the film, Harry kills Quirrell with relative ease, and is still on his feet before being downed by Voldemort's soul when he escapes.
- When confronted by Snape in the Shrieking Shack in the third film, Harry sends him flying into the wall with an Expelliarmus from Hermione's wand, which is supposed to be more difficult with a wand that hasn't chosen him. In the books, this same effect was achieved by him, Ron, and Hermione trying to disarm Snape simultaneously.
- In the fifth book, his duel with the Death Eaters in the Ministry had him fumbling spells a few times including reversing his own spell by accident. The film portrays him as being far more competent overall.
I have to ask: are these entries valid? Adaptational Badass has seen a lot of misuse in recent years and the AB page has a paragraph that says: At its core this causes a significant dissonance with those familiar with the original character. It is not about a change in personality (Martial Pacifist to Blood Knight), method of fighting (defensive Simple Staff to offensive BFS) or battlefield intelligence (Dumb Muscle to Genius Bruiser), but in terms of how relevant they are in a fight. The key is how they are able to navigate through the story. Consider as a result of Power Creep, Power Seep that Superman himself has varied from simply "above human" in strength to near godlike, but he has always been Superman.
Also, I've always believed that Adaptational Badass applies when the character, in his/her entirety, becomes a badass in the adaptation, not when he/she is given small moments of badassery, even when he/she is already a badass in the source material. So, what do you think?
openControversy in Man of Steel Film
It should be obvious by now that the DC Extended Universe is no stranger to controversy, but some people take it way too far and use TV Tropes to voice their displeasures with the franchise. Just a few moments ago, I had to delete a few comments that violate the neutrality of Man of Steel, along with some tropes that would work better in character pages. I should remind people that the Internet, and TV Tropes in particular, are not echo chambers that they can use to say/write whatever they want and not expect any consequences. I also understand my own actions will have consequence, which is why I patiently await for a response.
Edited by MasterHeroopenWould a new page be necessary? Videogame
As of now, Call of Duty: Warzone redirects to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019). I know that they're part of the same game, but by now, Warzone is host to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War content and lore, and seems to be doing the same for future titles. I feel that it has enough content to warrant its own page, especially with the incoming content. I will say that I do know Fortnite for example shares a page with its Battle Royale mode, but I was just thinking that a new page could reduce clutter. Cheers!
openShould we remove links to the social media accounts of predators/abusers?
Over on the Vic Mignogna disccussion page Wildcard has proposed removing all the links to Vic's social media accounts due to him being a predator and all of the harassment going on in relation to his (still ongoing but doomed) lawsuit. While I fully believe that Vic is a predator, is guilty of everything he's accused of and that there is a non-insignificant degree of misogyny in those who support his claims over the scores of other people (mostly women) who have shared there stories, I personally think this is a bit much. Given how little traffic the discussion page gets and how things are deadlocked at the moment I thought it would be best to ask in a more general area what people's thoughts are on this matter?
openBlack Widow 2021 YMMV removals without an edit reason Film
Troper Ginjj21 has made only a handful of edits on the wiki exclusively on the page YMMV.Black Widow 2021. All these are removals without an edit reason of entries that seem perfectly valid. I have PM them to let them know that they need to put an edit reason for removal of YMMV examples. What do you guys think of the entries, are they okay to be restored?
EDIT: These are the entries in question:
- And You Thought It Would Fail: Despite the public perception that a Black Widow movie would fail or underperform following the character's death in Endgame, and it being perceived as "too late" for a such a movie to be made even after a decade of fan demand for a spin-off, along with the movie's simultaneous release on Disney+ potentially eating into the movie's box office, the movie still saw the largest opening at the domestic box office since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, with a $80 million opening weekend and an impressive $78 million international opening on top of that, alongside over $60 million in revenues from its Disney+ going directly to Disney instead of having to be split with theaters. The only downside is that markets where Black Widow was not released in a day-and-date fashion would take a hit due to piracy of the Disney Plus release being rampant.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The revelation that Taskmaster is actually a grown up Antonia Dreykov could've served as the perfect impetus for why Antonia is so determined to kill Natasha. If it wasn't for Nat willingness to sacrifice Antonia's life (who was a child at the time) to assassinate her father General Dreykov, Antonia would've never had been physically mutilated then reconstructed into the villain she is now. This could have led to some poignant storytelling moments where Nat is truly forced to confront the reprehensible actions she has committed as an assassin as she is brought face to face with somebody she wrote off as Collateral Damage. But since Antonia is Brainwashed and Crazy for a majority of the movie, this plot point effectively gets swept under the rug the second Antonia is cured like all of the other Red Room candidates and is never brought up again.
- Catharsis Factor: Natasha freeing Taskmaster, especially given the reveal that she's just as much a victim as everyone else.
openTroper orrink is making subpar edits
orrink's edits and additions to pages tend to be lacking in quality, featuring improper CamelCase and bad grammar.
- Here they add something that's not a trope to the trope list (Pushover) and have improper grammar and spelling
- Here here and here they don't Wiki Word properly and misuse punctuation
- Here and here are other examples of improper linking
- Here in addition to improper linking they add a ZCE. They add a ZCE here too.
I've just sent them grammar and ZCE notifiers, but I figured these were too many bad edits to leave unannounced at this time.
Edited by SynchronicityopenWhy are Stealth Launches Not Allowed?
For a while, I'd been a little curious about this TLP rule since stealth launches are one of the ways to get a draft unlaunched. Note, I'm not complaining about this rule (in fact, I'm trying to make sure it gets enforced as seen by my couple posts on the TLP crash rescue thread), but I wonder why it was implemented in the first place.
openUnnecessary Character Page
1 had created Death Battle Suggestions Returning Combatants a few weeks ago, with the only words being "legendary godzilla vs heisei godzilla" and nothing else. This is in the same namespace as the show's WMG page, DEATH BATTLE! Suggestions: Returning Combatants.
Edited by ejmenendezopenStealth advertising?
Somebody added following sentence today to Mission: Impossible – Fallout:
The seventh film is set to release on May 27, 2022 and will be made available on Paramount+ 45 days later.
Is this kosher?
Magic Is Feminine is only a couple days old, and yet it already has a subpage: MagicIsFeminine.Comic Books, created by ~Spectacular Troper. Sure, maybe the comic books section was overtly long. But then the latter is also already hardsplit into MagicIsFeminine. The DCU and MagicIsFeminine.Marvel Universe, both of which have less than ten examples each, and leaving only a handful of examples on the Comic Books subpage.
This strikes me as very unnecessary. Can they be merged back?
