openA little troubling Live Action TV
Yesterday, I created a page for the most recent episode of What We Do in the Shadows. (Here.) Some time later, Viremaster made some additions to the page, but the spelling and grammar are quite a bit off. Here's what they added:
- Comically Missing the Point: Anton hear Guillermo's threat as a "heart-guard", he then reminds his pack to take their de-worming medication.
- Forgot About His Powers: after flailing from being set alight by the jalopy's backfire, he admits with was joke and calmly walks to the car while still on fire.
- Hopeless with Tech: The Vampiric Council's website looks like something from Geocites. Subverted with The Guide, whose revamp, while her first effort in web development, and was criticized for having "too exciting a font."
- Sex with the Ex: The other Nigthwalkers burst into a hotel room after following Nandor to find him with his old girlfriend.
- Visual Pun: Laszlo had his jalopy impounded for using to traffic miners. The next slide of coal miners clarifies this.
Am I the only one who finds this concerning? I will be summoning them as soon as I submit this.
openAsking cos I'm genuinely not sure
and not serious or anything, just wondering, but kalu-chan https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor=Kalu-chan is deleting Hindsight tropes saying spoilers, isn't that a bit overkill?
openNatter and misindentation
maddox121 has made an alarmingly large number of nattery and/or misindented edits, as shown, here (commented out and sent Issue Helpers on ZCE and improper indentation, this was before I realized how many flawed edits they had made), here (fixed), here, here, here, and here (a bit old, but you should spot it within the latest 10 page edits). It's especially puzzling since they did another misindented edit but later fixed them on their own here, correctly applied proper indentation here and even fixed someone else's misindentation here (again, the latter two are fairly old but you can still see them within the latest 10 edits). My impression is that they are definitely aware of the indentation rules, but either think they're optional or (judging by two of the three good edits being the oldest among the ones I'm citing) stopped following them at some point.
Edited by MyFinalEditsopenTroper with indentation problem
For context, they did this edit. Moved an old example from Gag Boobs to Boobs Of Steel. The problem is that they use wrong indentation that wasn't present in the original ones (by wrongly made the first two bullets entry into one bullet). So I fixed that and sent notifier to them.
However, when they replied they also complain about how they keep getting indentation notifier, as well as how it's "patronizing" and "it's getting very old". So it look like long term problem and they don't want to learn (I don't reply to the message BTW, their tone is quite antagonizing IMO).
Edited by Kuruniopen Confusion between BreakingTheFourthWall and MediumAwareness
So the description of Breaking the Fourth Wall says that this wiki's definition of the trope is a bit different in that "it only occurs if the characters acknowledge the audience or the author, whether directly or indirectly."
However, numerous on-page examples use it just for about any character that's aware they're in fiction, basically confusing it for Medium Awareness since the part where the character actually addresses the audience/author is missing from these examples.
So, is there a cleanup thread for this?
openCut List
If you've accidentally submitted the wrong names pace to the cut list (ie. dooming the Creator namespace rather than the YMMV), can you simply "undo" it by dooming the right namespace (in the case of my example, the YMMV) and add in the cut description that you meant to doom this page and adding the Creator namespace to the cut list was a mistake? There doesn't seem to be a "remove" button for accidental additions, but I'd imagine my suggestion is the closest substitute to that.
openNo Title
Oh boy, another edit war over whether an explicitly queer character is bi or gay in particular!
Technically no one individual has violated our Edit War policies yet by changing it twice, but there has been a series of edits on Watched It for the Representation over whether The Loud House character Luna should be referred to as bisexual or a lesbian.
We don't go to this fandom, but skimming the show's cleanup thread, a clear answer might not actually exist.
Currently considering sidestepping the whole issue by just saying "likes girls".
Edited by wingedcatgirlopenPageception?
I just created a page for the series of video games known as the "bit Generations" series and then I created a second for the series"Art Style" which is a separate series of games and should have its own page. Following the creation of all the links to the "bit Generations" page and then sending redirects from "Art Style" which I wanted to be its own page, I created a page for "Art Style" and now the "bit Generations" seems to be non-existent. "bit Generations" takes you to "Art Style". I want both pages on the site to exist separately. "bit Generations" should be linked from the Gameboy Advance page. and "Art Style" from Wii Ware and D Si Ware.
open TRS crowner
There is an active crowner for Fantastic Aesop at the Trope Repair Shop. If inclined to join the discussion, do so here.
This is only an announcement; please do not reply to this query.
openMr Rogers ymmv page
Why is YMMV.Mister Rogers Neighborhood divided into two different sections?
openWhat if alternate Reed Richards was awesome?
The animated series What If…? (2021) had a list of examples of Alternate Universe Reed Richards Is Awesome.
- Alternate Universe Reed Richards Is Awesome: Part of the premise of What If...? focuses on alternate versions of MCU characters, some of whom are far more powerful or stronger than their main timeline counterparts.
- Peggy Carter became a British super-soldier that took down HYDRA during World War II and saved Bucky Barnes from falling and losing his arm. She also stopped a giant Kraken from destroying the Earth and would reemerge in the present day to join the Avengers Initiative.
- Exaggerated with T'Challa as Star-Lord. Not only did he outshine his Sacred Timeline self and Peter as Star-Lord in every way possible, but he has also saved countless planets, including Drax's which means his family is still alive, and has become a well known and respected Robin Hood type hero throughout the galaxy by 2008. He even convinced Thanos to do a Heel–Face Turn.
- In the same episode with T'Challa, due to Thanos turning good the Collector takes his place as the Big Bad of the MCU and is implied to have killed, Captain America, Thor and Hela. Downplayed however as he was defeated far more easily than Thanos was in the Sacred Timeline by T'Challa.
- A rare example where a character became more awesome by going through a Face–Heel Turn with Hank Pym, who, out of vengeance for the death of Hope during a SHIELD mission, kills all the founding members of the Avengers but Captain America.
- In What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?, Strange Supreme is incredibly powerful after centuries of absorbing the power of creatures from other dimensions (to the point he can actually perceive Uatu as he watches events unfold and defeat his good variant created by the Ancient One) all he accomplishes in his quest to bring back his girlfriend Christine is the complete destruction of his universe. Essentially he's what Strange would have become if he allowed his arrogance and fear of failure rule his actions.
I removed all of them, and said "All the examples are misuse. Alternate Universe Reed Richards Is Awesome is Reed Richards Is Useless being averted in an alternate universe, not about an alternate character being more "awesome" than the original". It was restored later saying "Laconically, Alternate Reed Richards Is Awesome is about an Alternate Self making changes to their world that their original version cannot. Examples for this trope on its own page also include the likes of alternate selves doing much bigger things than their original counterparts, whether good or bad. So I don't believe this trope is misuse." None of the examples explain changes about the world's setting, only changes in the dynamic of the characters, and the trope's expanded definition should take priority over the laconic entry.
By the way, as I checked the article history I noticed a mistake from my part: I removed examples of Not as You Know Them also as misuse, and now I removed examples of Same Character, But Different, misuse as well, but I did not notice that those were the same examples repurposed to another trope. Meaning, I accidentally made an edit war. I apologize if this was wrong, and please comment on this other as well.
Edited by GrigorIIopen Roller Derby Film
It's a TV show from the 2010's. Probably for teens. There's a single scene I remember- the young sister is in a Roller Derby practice and the instructor offered her older sister who came to pick her up to come join them in a future practice. That's all :( sounds familiar to anyone? My brain is killing me
openDisagreement over Deus Ex Machina
xlblplk put a Deus ex Machina entry in YMMV.Worm, which I removed for not being an Audience Reaction. They then placed in on Literature.Worm like it's supposed to be, but I removed the example for not fitting the criteria. They then sent me a YMMV notifier (Which makes no sense since, again, the trope is not an Audience Reaction) and not only put it back in the YMMV section, but made it longer, so I feel like this is starting to turn into an edit war.
openLogos in videos
How strict is the policy on having logos (ex. bumpers, channel IDs, etc.) in videos? I have seen a few videos on here with logos in them (ex. a video of I Am the Noun from Breaking Bad), and there are some video examples I have that could potentially be no good because they contain logos and I can't get the footage without them.
Edit: Wrong trope name
Edited by NoonboryKedaboryopen This entry is trivia, which is cool and all, but not a trope. On a work, it goes on the Trivia tab.
How do I add this message to the top of a page? I've just made a Trivia page and have been crosswicking it, but I can't figure out how to put the Trivia message at the top of the page.
openUnrelated franchise examples grouped together
Was looking at the Western Animation folders/subpages and often saw that a bunch of Transformers series were grouped under the same bullet despite the examples not having anything to do with each other (they all take place in different continuities for the most part) or the trope having meaningful recurrence throughout the franchise.
I don't see this done with any other franchise; to me this would be the equivalent of listing unrelated examples of The Batman, Teen Titans and Justice League under the same bullet by virtue of all being DC properties.
Should I separate the examples (a lot just come next to each other alphabetically anyways, since they have the "Transformers" title)
openSpam in review comments Videogame
A rather old one I came across.
openSurprisingly realistic outcome problems. Anime
Yes, I will admit that I'm one of the Tropers whose example got cut but in the Pokemon examples a ton of examples got cut for 'being realistic but not surprising'. Thing is, in some cases the result is surprising due to the series in which the example takes place. How does one determine if something is both realistic AND surprising without using one's own bias?
openScope of OnlyOneName, and overlap with NoNameGiven
so here's a dilemma i've been thinking about recently. Only One Name's description says that it's only meant for characters who genuinely only have one name, and mentions that characters who have an unknown second name (i.e. Last-Name Basis) would be No Name Given. however, it's more common for me to see Only One Name used for cases where only one name is given but they may have a second name; No Name Given implies that the subject has no name at all. in some cases they're listed as both (for example "Sakaki" from Azumanga Daioh), which seems conflicting.
my question is thus: does the scope of Only One Name include characters whose second names aren't known, absorbing that trait from No Name Given? or, if No Name Given keeps those examples, should they be allowed to overlap with Only One Name or not?
On YMMV.My Hero Academia, Cat 798 changed the They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character example about Tamaki Amajiki into this run-on sentence with wonky grammar:
I reverted it back to its previous state and sent a grammar notifier, but they made a similar edit again, with most of the grammar errors still intact (though at least it's not a run-on sentence anymore).
