Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

How is this writeup for Mick Taylor?

Mick Taylor from Wolf Creek and it's sequel is one of the most monstrous horror villains ever created. An Australian Serial Killer, rapist, and torturer, he prays upon tourists visiting the Wolf Creek area and falsely befriends them before taking them back to his home and slowly torturing them to death For the Evulz. He has killed several dozen people including an entire family (even a little girl). One of his favorite torture methods is "head on a stick" where he severs their spine to turn them into a vegetable figure. At the end of the second film, he frames one of his victims for his crimes, leading to the ruination of his life.

[up]Try this:
Mick Taylor from Wolf Creek and its sequel is one of the most monstrous horror villains ever created. An Australian Serial Killer, rapist, and torturer, he prays upon tourists visiting the Wolf Creek area and falsely befriends them before taking them back to his home and slowly torturing them to death; all of this solely For the Evulz. He has killed several dozen people including an entire family (even a little girl). One of his favorite torture methods is "head on a stick" where he severs their spine to turn them into a human vegetable. At the end of the second film, he frames one of his victims for his crimes, leading to the ruination of the victim’s life.

[nja]I may just indeed keep the Wall of Text entries from Complete Monster Live Action TV. BTW, Lighty, you seem to watch Warehouse 13. Does "Artie's evil split personality" count? Also, the World Without End entries seem good, but why on earth does Godwyn not let the plague victims get help?

[nja]Hate to bring up an old example, but for Vince Peterson, do we actually SEE any of the murders?

Sakura Gari needs cleanup:

  • Dr. Tomohiko Katsuragi of Sakura Gari. Not only is he a disgusting pedophile and a Domestic Abuser, he drugs, rapes, and tortures Masataka (this includes whipping him, sticking a household object up his anus right after raping him, and holding his hand in boiling hot tea because of his jealousy over Masataka being the one Souma loves, when he loves Souma to an insane degree himself). Oh, and because Souma hated his stepmother Sakurako for raping him when he was younger, Katsuragi takes his words literally and forces a reluctant, young Souma to kill her. He literally took Souma's hand, which held a knife, and forcibly made him cut Sakurako's wrists, effectively killing her, while she was naked and passed out in the bathtub. And after the act, he also practically rapes Souma. Not only was Souma left traumatised by the deal, but this also contributed to Souma's "half-sister" Youya going from a simply adorable toddler into a scary Yandere and Creepy Child that calls himself "Sakurako", having walked into his mother's murder and gone mad from the horrifying sight. When Souma confronts Katsuragi on his rape and torture of Masataka, Katsuragi denies the accusation and tries to seduce Souma. He acts uninterested and mentions Masataka's name, so Katsuragi actually grabs Souma by the throat and tries to strangle him. Fortunately, though, Souma isn't fazed and deals him a huge Humiliation Conga, which Asayo transforms into a Karmic Death.
    • Souma's stepmother, aka the real Sakurako, also lands herself a mention here, for the reasons already depicted.
    • Souma Saiki himself is a brutal deconstruction of the trope. He initially seems like a Complete Monster, at least to Masataka (who calls him out on it with a What the Hell, Hero?), when he tells him that he's responsible for all the deaths surrounding him, saying he effectively drove all his former lovers to suicide, shows no remorse for it, and says that he seduces and sleeps with anyone because he wants it. The truth is a lot dirtier and uglier. And that's before we get to the torture that drove him to be the way he, well, is. In reality, Souma is utterly fucked up due to his past and present, but still not completely monster-ized.

Souma Saiki is clearly not an example. Souma's stepmother has no context and her entry relies on a passing mention in the first entry.

Shaoken: It sounds perfectly like Hopeless's writing then. The problem is Arcade was trapped perfectly: He showed up himself with his powers in control of the situation and didn't expect them to know how to shut them down. And then he's killed by Hazmat, whose boyfriend he murdered in front of her eyes by being blasted into a skeleton. Later solicits indicate this is Zemo, Hellstrom and Masque's story, so it seemed more an epilogue to Arena than anything.

ACW: Nobody but Paracelsus counts, IMO, in Warehouse 13

And use the search function. From now on, if you have an issue with the entry, check to see if it was discussed. The Las Vegas ones were proposed a while back.

and sounds like Tomohiko's a keep, but cut the others

[up]Actually, I DID search for Las Vegas dude; wasn't mentioned if the murders were onscreen or not.

[nja]And reading the episode summaries, doesn't seem like they are. Sure, he SAYS he's killed more, but...Also, not to mention, rape is not enough, and it looks like all we see is one ATTEMPTED rape...

Does Clear Sky from Warrior Cats qualify? Let's go over what he's done.

1. Exiles all hungry or weak cats from his tribe, because he doesn't want a weak tribe. Ergo, he's an example of The Social Darwinist.

2. Killed a she-cat and almost killed her kits, which was only stopped because Petal, one of his tribemates, offered to take them in.

3. Like Tigerstar, he's not satisfied with his current territory and makes excuses to expand it, be it at the cost of cats lives or not.

4. He's extremely ungrateful to his son and his brother, Gray's Wing.

5. Exiled his own son for no reason twice. Though to be fair, the second time his son left willingly.

6. Deliberately sends a fox to kill a kittypet just for trespassing on his territory.

His only redeeming qualities, if you can call them that, is that he leads a group of cats. He's more than willing to exile and/or kill them if they become inconvenient to him.

I think he has the deeds to qualify, I'm not sure if he's evil enough to qualify though. He's a Fallen Hero like Sephiroth, though.

Even if he has no redeeming qualities, it doesn't seem like he stacks up to Scourge, Tigerstar and Brokenstar.

About Durge, his entry at The Brute mentions that he's extremely loyal to Count Dooku. Is that ever played as a redeeming, or even at all noble, trait?

Lightysnake Since: May, 2010
#24610: Apr 25th 2014 at 4:34:11 PM

Not at all. Durge and Dooku are never, to my knowledge, even onscreen together. Durge's loyalty is summoned up in this line: "dooku promised me I'd get to bag some Jedi!"

AmbarSonofDeshar Since: Jan, 2010

[up][up]Durge isn't loyal to Dooku. At all. He's a brutal thug who gets off on killing, nothing else.

Quote: "I haven't killed a Jedi in centuries and today I get to kill four of you. Add that to the Gungans I already murdered, the hostages I'm going to kill later, and all the Naboo who will die tomorrow, and it's a damn good week."

I just realized that Durge's name sounds like "dirge." So he goes with Grievous, Savage, and practically every "Darth," then.

Okay I will attempt to do a write for Animated Jason Wynn and the New 52 Mongul:

  • In Spawn: The Animated Series Jason Wynn stands out in an already very dark show. Wynn is the director of the NSC. He is the one who ordered the death of Al Simmons by having him burned alive. He uses his position to protect child killer Billy Kincaid from the police by killing anyone who discovers Kincaid's brutal crimes. He is covering up Kincaid's crimes in order to extort favors from Kincaid's father, a corrupt senator. When visiting crime boss Tony Twist, Wynn has two prostitutes that were with Tony killed, so no one besides Tony would know he was there. Wynn is also using his position to steal weapons from the US Department of Defense and is selling them to various terrorists and dictators across the globe. When one of Wynn's employees, Terry Fitzgerald discovers Wynn's crimes, Wynn frames him these crimes, putting Terry's life in a tale spin. Wynn later orders a hit squad to kill Terry's wife Wanda and his daughter Cyan. Wynn also orders Chief Banks to shoot police officer Twitch Williams, when Twitch gets close to uncovering Wynn's crimes. After Terry reveals Wynn's crimes to the world, Wynn becomes a free agent and seeks the mask of Genghis Khan, which will give him the powers of Hell. We learn that Wynn had one his former subordinates,Major Forsberg, thrown into a cell and starved, when he tried to leave Wynn's services. Wynn threatens to kill Forsberg's family unless he tells him where to find the mask. When Terry tries to kill Wynn in revenge, Wynn has him dragged to an opium den and forcible drugged, because Wynn thinks Terry slowly rotting away in this den is more of a fitting punishment then a quick death. Wynn later uses a knife to try and slowly torture Terry, while gloating about how he will sell his wife into forced prostitution.

  • In the New 52 Universe, Mongul is as brutal as ever. When he sends his War World battle station to conquer a planet, the Admiral in charge of the planet's defenses demands his surrender. Mongul kidnaps the Admiral and gives him tour of his space station. Mongul shows him the Gladiator Games, where the loser of the match will have his entire race exterminated. Mongul then reveals that he killed his own brother and parents to gain total dominion over War World. Mongul then shows the Admiral his collection of Black Mercy plants that he uses on victims to make their greatest fantasies come true or make them feel their greatest fears. Mongul also reveals that while they were talking, War World has destroyed most of his planet and the survivors will taken as slaves. Those too weak to be slaves will be have their organs harvested. Mongul then reveals then final room in his gruesome tour, a room full of heads on pikes. When the admiral asks what was their crime, Mongul states they had the gall to demand his surrender. He then rips off the admiral's head and places it on a pike.

On Star Wars, head's up, Tarkin's getting a backstory novel. Man I hope they don't give him a sob backstory. It's by the guy who wrote Darth Plagueis, though, and he absolutely did not make Sidious sympathetic in that.

[up][up]Savage Opress? Awesome.
[up]Luceno's writing a Tarkin backstory? Kickass! [tup][tup][awesome] Plagueis is only the second Expanded Universe novel I've read (after Shadows of the Empire, then next is Death Star), and I'm DEFINITELY gonna pick up that Tarkin book. Hell, it will either force us to delete Tarkin or expand his entry.

This is also one of the first works to be released under the new "everything is equally-canon" policy, so by our own rules we'll have to consider it.

[up] It was just announced today. Basically, as of now, only the movies and the animated series are canon (not sure about the Tartakovsky Clone Wars), BUT, every EU work released after this announcement will henceforth be considered just as canon as the films themselves, as will any parts of the prior EU works an author chooses to reference.

Lightysnake Since: May, 2010
#24623: Apr 25th 2014 at 8:53:36 PM

Essentially all previous EU is in this "wait and see" pile...but no, we'll never delete film Tarkin. The novels, as far as we go, don't override the original films.

HamburgerTime Since: Apr, 2010
#24624: Apr 25th 2014 at 8:54:22 PM

[up] But from today on they're equal to the films, no longer subordinate.

Lightysnake Since: May, 2010

Even then, unless it's in a film? To let a nearly 40 year old portrayal be removed like that?
