Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Okay, guys, I'm back. Workload's relaxed and that nice break was needed. In the process of reading two fanfics to see if I may have some new candidates.

[tup] To Zarth. That sounds even worse than I expected. Or better. I'm gonna need to check it out.

As for Creedence Leonore Gielgud (the queen from Troll 2), she'd probably count, I think. She does refer to the goblins as her "children", but doesn't seem to really display much care for them ... oh, why am I bothering with a logical analysis of that movie.

Having had my last three nominations voted down, I should probably give it a rest but just one more and then I'll have a bit of a break. (Possibly not much of one, but a bit of one.)

What's the series?

Roswell, based around the premise that the Roswell crash contained four alien/human hybrids who were released from suspended animation in the 1980s. Now grown to teenagers, they have no memory of their home or how they got their strange powers but quickly befriend a handful of local teens and share their secret with them.

Who's the villain?

Agent Daniel Pierce, the Big Bad of Season 1. Head of the FBI Special Unit, which basically amounts to a secret alien hunting team apparently answerable to no-one. In the early part of the season, he sends two of his agents, Stevens and Topolsky, to spy on the teenagers, who he suspects are aliens. Both become bothered by Pierce's methods and try to leave the unit, so he has Stevens killed in a way that doesn't seem to have been very pleasant. He then arranges to have Topolsky locked up in a mental hospital. When she flees to the aliens for help, he follows and observes, then has her sent back to the hospital, which he then sets fire to, killing not only her but five other completely innocent people.

He then captures Max, the leader of the aliens, and subjects him to hours of torture for information about the aliens' plans and the alien technology that the unit have captured. None of which Max knows anything about but Pierce continues to torture him anyway. When Max escapes, Pierce teams up with the show's Starter Villain Sheriff Valenti to try and kill not only the aliens but their human friends. Fortunately, Valenti has done a Face–Heel Turn and leads him into a trap. When the plan goes wrong, the good guys end up trading fire with Pierce and alien Michael reluctantly kills him.

Heinousness

Topolsky says he killed Stevens as an example to the rest of them "piece by piece". He seems to have also subjected her to a rather brutal debrief that has left her on the verge of insanity. Kills five innocent hospital patients and endangers more just to get rid of one person who knows too much. Tortures a teenage boy for hours for information he doesn't even have, including truth drugs, ice baths and electro-shock therapy. He doesn't balk at the idea of killing three normal teenagers, dismissing Valenti's concerns for them with "There's always a price to pay for freedom."

As Valenti says, "There's a right side here and a wrong side. I don't think Pierce is on the right side."

Redeeming Features?

Pierce sees himself as a Knight Templar, making tough decisions to protect humanity. In reality, he's a General Ripper, hurting innocents to protect from a non-existent alien invasion. The only mitigation is that the teens' over-zealous protector Nasedo isn't helping their cause by killing most of the agents Pierce sends after them. (Not that Pierce is too bothered about that. We Have Reserves.)

When Nasedo takes on Pierce's identity, he has a relationship with Senator Vanessa Whitaker. It's not clear whether this started with the real Pierce, but it's doubtful he cared much for her if it did: For a start, he hasn't noticed that she's an alien as well.

Verdict

I wouldn't like to say...

[tup]Zarth.

Anyways, I have another novel proposal, this one from John Nicholl, the same writer who gave us David Galbraith. I'm not as sure this candidate is going to count, but it's worth a shot. I'm not feeling particularly well at the moment, so I just want to get this one out of the way.

Who Is He?

Professor Mark Goddard is the Big Bad of the novel Portraits of the Dead. He is a university professor who, behind his charming facade, is in truth a Serial Killer/torturer who is said to have tortured and murdered at least five young women, though he reveals he has killed far more than that.

What Does He Do?

Mark was raised in a dysfunctional household, raised by an abusive father who "found fault in everything Mark said or did". When Mark was twelve, he noticed a tabby cat caught in a poacher's trap. As Mark watched the cat struggling futilely to free itself, he found he enjoyed the animal's suffering, and after about twenty minutes, he crushed the cat's head under a rock, just to see the results.

At that moment, Mark found that he enjoyed the pain of others, and spent his childhood and adolescent years experimenting on white rats, developing various methods of torture and execution, including burning, poisoning, starvation, suffocation...you get the gist. And right from the beginning, he knew that simply torturing animals wouldn't be enough to satisfy him, and began fantasizing about killing women, specifically young, blonde, slim women.

In college, Mark finally acted upon these fascinations, slowly poisoning his girlfriend for months on end until she eventually died as a result. Finding the experience "marvelous", Mark set out to do it again, killing once a year on average afterwards, usually through poisoning. Throughout this, the only person aware of Mark's crimes were his mother, who helped keep others in the dark.

About six years from the novel's present time, Mark developed a house in the woods, particularly a chamber created specifically to keep his victims trapped. This was something of a "revelation" to Mark, for now he realized he could kidnap a victim, and then act out his twisted fantasies upon them for as long as he wanted without fear of interference. During this time, Mark also found that he wanted an assistant, someone who could do his bidding and appreciate his "accomplishments".

This was when his new MO started: Mark would abduct a young, college-aged women, and imprison them in his chamber. Mark would name these women "Venus", and force them to refer to him as "master". He would then subject them to a series of psychological torture, in an attempt to force them to be subservient to him. If these women disappointed him in some way, Mark would subject them to extreme physical pain (in his own words: "The tearing out of fingernails and hair, the drilling and pulling of teeth, the amputation of fingers and toes"). Throughout it all, Mark would test these women to see if they were fit to his "soulmate". When they failed to live up to his standards, he simply killed them, burying their bodies in a specific gravesite while keeping their amputated fingernails/toenails as trophies.

In the novel's present time, Mark sets his sights on one of his university students, Emma Jones. Eventually, he follows Emma to her home, disguised as an elderly man, and abducts her, imprisoning her in his chambers. Naming her "Venus Six", Mark often speaks to her through a monitor, demanding her complete obedience. When Emma makes an attempt to reason with him, Mark forces her to listen to a recording of the screams of his previous victims as a form of psychological torture.

Keeping Emma imprisoned for weeks on end, Mark forces her to commit a series of degrading actions for his amusement. At various points, Mark will also drug her into unconsciousness, during which he would enter her cell and molest or beat her. Throughout it all, Emma makes secret attempts to try and gain Mark's trust so she can catch him off-guard and kill him. However, she is unaware of his identity as he always wears a clown mask.

Mark is alerted by his mother that Detective Clive Rankin has been at her house for investigation. Panicking, Mark contemplates killing Emma to get rid of the evidence, but decides otherwise. When Rankin later questions Mark, primarily regarding the vehicle that was used during Emma's abduction, Mark takes the opportunity to shift the police's suspicions onto Emma's ex-boyfriend, Mosely, by claiming that he had sexually assaulted another student. Mosely is brought in for questioning afterwards, but the police eventually deduce that he isn't the killer.

To get rid of evidence, Mark burns the car that he had used for Emma's kidnapping, but the resulting explosion leaves him injured. Afterwards, Mark hears a plea from Emma's parents, begging them to release their daughter, or, if she's already dead, to at least reveal where her body this. This amuses Mark, and informs Emma, imploring her to instead write a note to her parents, telling them not to expect her home. It's at about this point that Emma realizes that her kidnapper is Mark.

After Detective Rankin arrives at Mrs. Goddard's house for more questioning, she finally has enough of his meddling and drugs him, causing him to fall unconscious. Mark then takes the opportunity to kill a drugged Rankin by placing him in a car and filling it with toxic fumes, trying to make it look like a suicide. Arriving back home, Mark then finds that his mother has passed away, which implores him to move things along with Emma, to finally decide if she is suitable enough to be his "soulmate".

Placing his mother's corpse in the freezer, Mark then forces Emma to watch an hour-long recording of him torturing and murdering his previous five "guests". Emma is horrified, but manages to get through the recording. She then manages to manipulate Mark into revealing his past and how he first started killing, which arouses him. Taking advantage of this, Emma suggests sex with Mark. He agrees, but only if Emma fetches a specific pair of shoes to wear for the act. Emma feints fatigue, and an annoyed Mark enters the chambers to get them himself. Once he's inside, Emma gets up and slams the steel doors shut, trapping Mark inside.

Using the same microphone Mark had used, Emma speaks to a trapped Mark, taunting him that there is no way out and telling him to enjoy his new living conditions. She then escapes to freedom, leaving Mark to starve to death, trapped in his own chambers with no escape.

Mitigating factors?

Let's address the biggest one: his mother.

Mark's relationship with his mother is...weird. Mark does seem to rely on her to an extent, asking for advice, primarily regarding his victims. However, in general, their relationship is very contemptuous, with the two arguing with one another regularly, and Mark secretly hoping for when she eventually dies of old age and at one point, briefly entertaining the idea of killing her himself.

And then, when she does die...Mark kneels down, let's a tear slip, and admits that he has always relied on her...

...and then immediately afterwards, Mark starts venting about how the women in his life always let him down and insist on disappointing him, referring to her as a "bitch", and then starts making plans for Emma to take her place.

Other than that...no. He flat-out states that he feels nothing for others and that he sees "empathy" as a weakness. His desire for a soulmate is portrayed more so that he has someone to stroke his ego and admire his accomplishments, as well as so that he has someone to direct his abuse towards.

Final Verdict?

I'm honestly unsure on him. If it weren't for the thing with his mother, I'd probably be more inclined to vote him up, but as is, I'll just leave it to you to decide.

Thoughts?

Why so serious?

Kreeg needs more votes, but I'll write him up now, along with Carnage (who DID get enough votes).

  • Spider-Man: Carnage in New York & Goblin's Revenge: Cletus Kasady, the psychotic Serial Killer who then became the chaos-loving creature known as Carnage, is subjected to an experiment which aims to kill the symbiote without killing Kasady. Unfortunately, Dr. Eric Catrall, who has accidentally created a Psycho Serum which causes anyone subjected to it to go mad with bloodlust, tries to neutralize the effects of the serum bit ends up setting Carnage free. Carnage, after torturing Catrall, goes to a party where he violently murders some 20 or so people, and forces Spider-Man to save more. He then cuts a swath through people at a public event to feed the homeless, and attempts to drop the serum in the food for the homeless, which would cause massive casualties. He is stopped, but while escaping attempts to drop a light fixture on what would be a dozen or so people before Spidey saves them. He is captured, but is broken out by a mercenary team hired by , and shows his appreciation by playing "the old skin game" with the leader—we are later told he killed 30 or so of the mercenary team—and on his way out cuts one guard's nose off and cuts off the hands of another. He later kills several more people—including killing a man by stuffing dollar bills down his mouth, suffocating him, to steal his hat and coat; and ripping a man's head off to force an airplane to take off— and threatens to kill hostages if Spidey doesn't show up. Finally, when Carnage's rescuer attempts to launch a pumpkin bomb containing a few drops of Catrall's serum at Spidey, Carnage redirects it into a crowd; "fortunately", the only ones affected are a team of 51 mercenaries hired by Catrall's ex-employee to retrieve the serum. As Carnage watches in delight, the men BRUTALLY tear each other apart, while the final 5 are shot by police.
  • Fantastic Four: To Free Atlantis, by Nancy Collins: Warlord Kreeg, defined by his hatred of humans is introduced having captured a human, and would have executed said human if not stopped; he has apparently taken humans from boats before. His main role is taking part in a conspiracy along with Namor's cousin Byrrah to overthrow Namor and place Byrrah in charge. Kreeg manipulates Byrrah into signing several death warrants, and enjoys watching as an execution is taking place. He later has opponents killed and their heads placed on pikes. He plans to "purify" the undersea kingdoms of not-Atlanteans, and declares were on the surface world by, among other acts, having his forces attempt to blow up all the ships (at the least) of 5 major world harbors, including New York Harbor. He also decapitates a subordinate who fails him. While appearing to be a Well-Intentioned Extremist, the fact that he is willing to work with a "surface-dweller" such as Doctor Doom shows that he is nothing more than, as Namor himself says, "a fierce and bloody-minded savage".

Regarding Mark, I'm conflicted. What was his relationship with his father was like? I know that his father was abusive in the "Well Done, Son" Guy sense, but was that all? Nonetheless, from the way you phrased it, it does sound like Mark came around to his revelation that he enjoys the suffering of others on his own, even taking that possible Freudian Excuse into account. Which is usually rare with a lot of real-life serial killers, who take up those, ahem, hobbies because they're bored or feel humiliated by their home life. So I'll abstain.
