Well, I've searched, and I couldn't find this topic. I found a top 100 favorites, but I thought it was a bit excessive (I already have a hard time deciding on a top 10, let alone a top 100), and I didn't feel like necroing a three-year old thread anyway.

I thought this would be interesting, top 10 lists are a good way to engage conversation about movies you or other people like that may not have come up otherwise.

So, without further ado, here's mine. Like all top 10s it's subject to change, and apart from the top 3, the rest fluctuates in terms of order, but you have to start somewhere right ?

  • 1 - Sleuth, Joseph L. Mankiewicz (1972)
  • 2 - In the Mouth of Madness, John Carpenter (1995)
  • 3 - Blow Out, Brian De Palma (1981)
  • 4 - Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Clint Eastwood (1997)
  • 5 - The private life of Sherlock Holmes, Billy Wilder (1970)
  • 6 - Groundhog Day, Harold Ramis (1993)
  • 7 - The Man who would be King, John Huston (1975)
  • 8 - Chimes at Midnight, Orson Welles (1966)
  • 9 - Raiders of the Lost Ark, Stephen Spielberg (1981)
  • 10 - The Party, Blake Edwards (1968)

I had to refrain myself from filling the entirety of the top 10 with John Carpenter movies, or Hitchcock movies, or Brian De Palma movies, because that happens every once in a while.

So bear in mind that apart from the top 4 the rest has been fluctuating greatly for the past few years, so again this topic is not about being dead set on your top 10 (although if you are that's certainly a feat in its own right) but rather of capturing a snapshot of your favorite movies at a certain moment in time.

Excluding Animated movies and Hitchcock movies...

The Clue, The Great Escape, M, Finding Forrester, Con Air, Save the last Dance, The Man in the Iron Mask, Peking Opera Blues, The Court Jester, Arsenic and old Lace, The Full Monty, Pirates of the Caribbean

Mind you, those are not necessarily the best movies I know, but those are the ones I can watch again and again without getting tired of them (and yes, I am aware that those are more than ten, but really, how to pick, they are mostly from totally different genres).

1. Yellow Submarine - Because it's trippy.

2. The Incredibles - Because it's reconstructive.

3. Pacific Rim - Because it's AWESOME.

4. The Avengers - Because it's awesome AND funny.

5. Tangled - Because it's sweet.

6. Lost and Found [Sweet Lies] (A Korean comedy you've probably never heard of) - Because it's hilarious.

7. Star Wars (It would take too long to list which I like so I'll just put the whole series) - Because it's amazing.

8. Pokémon 3 (Yes, I'm being serious.) - Because it's surprisingly deep.

9. A Serious Man - Because it's too close to my own life for comfort.

10. It's a Wonderful Life - Because it's hopeful despite all of life's woes.

And now the word "Because" looks weird to me.

This is a toughie. I'm not one to rewatch movies, but a few are rooted in my consciousness. Hmm...

  1. Back To The Future: One of the few I've seen over and over again. Great improv acting and general sweetness from Mike and Chris.
  2. The Matrix: More relevant than it has any right to. In hindsight, Keanu clearly doesn't have the foggiest idea what's going on, but the supporting cast is sound.
  3. The Craft: Fairuza Balk, as usual, is the only draw of the movie.
  4. Hound of the Baskervilles (2002): Probably not the best version of this particular story, but they took some creative liberties I enjoy. Richard E. Grant does the heavy lifting.
  5. Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows: A bit overlong, but I love Noomi and Jude. Great work from Hans Zimmer too! It'll be hard to top this adaptation.
  6. Its A Wonderful Life: An annual groaner, and the first fifty minutes are always a slog. But the payoff is worth it.
  7. Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Also abusively long. Gets a little too soppy toward the end. Otherwise, this is my placeholder for every James Cameron movie.
  8. Sunshine: This changed my life. I don't think I'll watch it again.
  9. Short Circuit 2: Hee hee. Michael McKean does some of his bet work in here, incidentally.
  10. The Avengers

Let me think a bit... there are plenty which will remain outside and I could change this list within a couple of months.

1 - The Godfather Part 1

2 - Taxi Driver

3 - Blade Runner

4 - The Good The Bad And The Ugly

5 - Annie Hall

6 - Pulp Fiction

7 - The Lord Of The Rings (any of the three, really)

8 - Princess Mononoke

9 - Fargo

10 - Beauty And The Beast

Honourable Mentions: When Harry Met Sally, Toy Story, El Cid, Aguirre The Wrath Of God, Suspiria.

It's a fairly concrete list, but there's always a little bit of wiggle room near the bottom.

1. The Godfather

2. The Lord of the Rings (I prefer the Extended Editions)

3. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (theatrical version, though the extended version does have some cool scenes that I like)

4. 12 Angry Men (1957)

5. Gettysburg (the extended version, for whatever that's worth. Though there's one extra scene I could definitely do without.)

6. George A. Romero's Day of the Dead

7. JFK (Director's Cut version, though I haven't watched the "theatrical version" in a long time)

8. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) (and it's still funny to think that the guy that directed this also directed Jaws: The Revenge)

9. Jurassic Park

10. Toy Story (This one feels pretty out of place on this list)

Cool to see Dr. Strangelove getting some love (no pun intended). By a long shot my favorite Kubrick movie, probably his best with Barry Lyndon too. Although it featuring Peter Sellers (one of the best actors of all time, again probably my favorite actor as well) in three (!) roles helps the movie a lot.

I like the unusual choices too, Pokemon 3, Attack of the Clones, even if I don't agree, I think it's cool and bold, and you're totally right to stand beside your choices. And Attack of the Clones is still better than Phantom Menace. I for one like any scene involving Ewan Mc Gregor as Obi Wan in this one, I think he does a really good job in the role.

I think we should do like an aggregate of all the top 10s to form the "Ultimate TV Tropes Films", with like 10 points for each person's n°1, 9 points for n°2, etc... and have like a list of 50 movies constructed out of all the added points. Who's up for doing a google doc ? (I can do it if you want)

Ten films? I can do that. There used to be a thread asking you to list your top hundred favourite films, which I could never do. Trying to list that many films I ran out of ones I legitimately love and started listing ones I merely like. Here's my top ten in an approximate order:

1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit

2. Dr Strangelove

3. Toy Story

4. The Good The Bad And The Ugly

5. Strangers On A Train

6. The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre

7. Twelve Angry Men

8. North By Northwest

9. The Man Who Would Be King

10. Coraline

[up] Yeah that's what I mentioned when creating the thread, 100 films is just too many. Even for me the bottom half of my top 10 list fluctuates all the bloody time (it sometimes includes The Wicker Man, Prince of Darkness, Dr. Strangelove, Being There, Psycho, Mulholland Drive, Last Year at Marienbad, and a slew of others) so I couldn't even fathom doing a top 100.

Also, big [tup] man, you have great taste. John Huston rocks. A director much too under-appreciated in my opinion, much like others like Howard Hawks, Robert Aldrich, Billy Wilder, Frank Capra, Robert Altman... Most people know only like a couple of their most famous movies but almost all of them are worth watching.

This week's top 10 (because I made some changes from time to time) would be:

The top three are more or less constant; one appeals to my soul, the other to my heart, and the last one to my mind.

Honourable Mentions: The Princess Bride, Goodbye Lenin, Beauty And The Beast, Zorba The Greek, Le Concert, Ed Wood and Schindlers List,

My top five usually remain fairly consistent, having given a reasonable amount of thought to it -

Beyond that, though? Let's see...

As much as I'd like to think that that's a fairly eclectic mix, there's some definite consistent themes there...

I really need to see Moon because everyone's been raving about it.

#25: Dec 15th 2013 at 3:05:30 AM

The first one is my favourite but the others aren't in any particular order.

1) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - I absolutely love Shane Black and I think that this movie just does everything right.

2) Film/Inception - I am in no way trying to say that this movie is perfect but it marked when I started to see movies in a different way than I had before. As well as this, it's a cheer-up film for me.

3) Fantastic Mr. Fox - This was my favourite book as I kid and I can't thank Wes Anderson enough for making this film.

4) Evil Dead II - Do I really even have to explain this one?

5) Amélie - How can someone watch this and not fall in love with it?

6) Serenity - Probably one of the best cast films I've ever seen and it really introduced me to Joss Whedon. I remember watching this and thinking " The Avengers is in safe hands".

7) Toy Story 2 - Did the seemingly impossible job of improving upon the first one. Also, I was about 4 when I first saw this and Zurg genuinely made me run out of the cinema.

8) The Shawshank Redemption - This really is one of the greatest films ever made, isn't it?

9) Hot Fuzz - Everytime I watch this film, I discover a new level of genius.

10) Black Dynamite - If you haven't seen or heard of this, watch it immediately.

Gentlemen, as of this moment, I am that second mouse.
