New battle is out... And the fandom shall rejoice once it ends.

Yeah, I figured that the fact that Pikachu usually has a trainer giving them commands would factor into this. I'm sure that, if he had Ash (or any trainer, really) commanding him, he would have won, but then, Death Battles don't allow outside help.

The way it ended was a bit anticlimactic...

Anticlimatic? Yes, I suppose it was. But now that we all know what the next fight is, the question is will Son Goku win, or will Kal El? Let's assume they're using the New Earth Superman, seeing how that's the incarnation most people think of... and because Earth Two's Superman is a weakling while Earth One's was a Physical God. See here for more in-depth info on Supe's powers through the ages.

... and this battle had better be &%$#ing EPIC!!!

Wow, no wonder I was never a fan of Superman. I discuss it with my friend all the time and we always end up saying: "No matter who wins, its for fun." Although I wish they saved the battle for December seeing how people claim "Its the end of the world waaa". That'd be the best fight to see if it does.

[up]

Well, any number of god-like characters could work for a December 2012 match-up. Looking back, I believe somewhere we mentioned Godzilla, Evangelion Unit-02, Nightmare, and Ichigo Kurosaki, but there's also Cthulhu, Madoka, Sephiroth and Kefka (to settle another great pop-culture rivalry), Dr. Manhattan, Ganondorf, Legendary Spyro (heck, even the original Spyro), Dante, Bayonetta, etc.

As for who wins... Superman is Made of Iron but not 100% invincible, and can be worn down to the point where he can be injured and even killed, as seen with the fight with Doomsday. Goku is most definitely not Made of Iron, but relies on Heroic Resolve and his Super Mode to pull him through tough fights (and look at how many times he's been killed). I guess it all comes down to whether Goku's Kamehameha can burn through Superman's solar-powered force-field.

You know, this latest Death Battle had me thinking what other Pokemon could potentially appear as combatants, and the only one famous and powerful enough I could think of would be Mewtwo. So, who would be a good match for Mewtwo? The only person that comes to mind is Jean Grey, and from what little I know of how the Phoenix Force works, she'd wipe the floor with him.

#486: Sep 21st 2012 at 7:46:16 AM

[up] Charizard would work well paired with another dragon (i.e. Spyro), although if he's up against an opponent with water-type attacks he's screwed.

As for Mewtwo... in Super Smash Bros Melee Mewtwo was a Glass Cannon, but in the games he's a Lightning Bruiser. Still, you're right that Phoenix would roast him. I can't think of a good match for him off the top of my head either. He falls into that "Too powerful but too weak" category that a lot of anime characters fit into. M. Bison, perhaps?

You know, if they hadn't already had him fight Vegeta (seriously, Shadow vs Vegeta? Who thought that was an even fight?), I'd think Shadow vs Mewtwo would be interesting. They're both artificially-created, made to be the ultimate life form. Mewtwo has his psychic abilities, and Shadow has power over Chaos. I think that'd be a good fight.

Yep, that actually sounds like a fair match. Of course, the idea of "too strong but too weak" is often a factor. For example, Pikachu's speed and strength was still not enough to beat Blanka who is slower yet has a range advantage and likely has experince grabbing rats, squirrels, etc. which are fast as hell. Although I'd still love to see Kurohime vs Bayonetta for the ultimate Fanservice Witch Showdown or Rubi Malone vs Revy.

Charizard would work well paired with another dragon

The thing about Charizard is that, while he's certainly a powerful Pokemon, he's a pretty mediocre dragon. I mean, just about any other dragon in fiction can do all he can and more, and then there's Charizard's obvious elemental weaknesses to account for. I don't know much (or anything, really) about Spyro, but something tells me even he would win in a fight against Charizard.

Man, that next death battle preview.

Wiz and Boomstick's reactions are what sold it.evil grin

And yes, that ending was kinda anticlimactic. But I have to admit, there was no way Blanka would lose. He had too much of an edge.

[up][up] It depends which Spyro we're looking at. Charizard's small compared to most dragons, but is around twice Spyro's size - assuming Elora is around 5.5 feet tall, has got a wide repertoire of attacks, and its only major weaknesses are electric attacks, water attacks, rock attacks, and the flame on its tail (which is actually quite difficult to extinguish).

Legendary Spyro has Playing with Fire, Shock and Awe, An Ice Person, Dishing Out Dirt, and Power of the Void abilities, is probably around the same size as Charizard in the third game, is very, very physical when fighting, and can actually fly. This makes him a decent opponent, although his electrical and rock attacks give him a distinct edge that would probably tip the balance in his favour.

All Classic Spyro can do without Power Ups is ram things with his horns, spit short-range Spread Shot bursts of flame, and glide, although that's all he really needs. But when you're a particularly small dragon going up against something twice your size that can fly, is resistant to fire, and can spit flames hot enough to melt boulders, that's not gonna be enough - especially since he would be without Sparx. As such, while he has defeated opponents far larger and stronger than him, he wouldn't make much of a foe given his lack of durability.

Skylanders Spyro can fly, but he essentially has the same powers as Classic Spyro with an Incendiary Exponent Battle Aura added to his horn attacks. This, coupled with his greater durability, arguably makes him a better choice than Classic Spyro.

Classic Spyro also has multiple types of breath: fire, ice, lightning, water, and... bubbles, if we're not limiting Classic Spyro to the original trilogy.

[up] All those extra abilities come from power-ups, and I said excluding power-ups. Plus, unless he spams the invincibility power up Classic Spyro would still be in for a One-Hit Kill. Heck, with access to power ups Classic Spyro could probably take on Ridley and win. I still say Skylanders Spyro would be a better match for Charizard than Legendary Spyro or Classic Spyro, given that the former is more powerful all-round and the latter is both potentially more powerful and incredibly weak.

If this played out like an actual Death Battle, would you expect Wiz and Boomstick to not give Classic Spyro most of his powerups? Besides, if it did happen, we'd likely get a composite of the three Spyros, invalidating everything we've discussed regarding version differences.

It's not unusual for them to include powerups. They did it with Mario.

[up] They didn't include all of Mario's and Sonic's power-ups, though, just the most famous ones. If they were to use Classic Spyro, the power-ups would probably be the ones from the original trilogy: the Superflame, Superfly, Invincibility, Spring Jump, Supercharge, and Ice Breath powers.

[up][up] The compositing works for Link and Zelda only because they live in a shared universe and are specifically referred to (both in-series and in their Death Battle summaries) as the reincarnations of the Hero of the Goddess and the Goddess Hylia. Compositing all three versions of Spyro would be like compositing the different versions of Rainbow Dash and Starscream: it just won't work because they're completely different characters living in Alternate Universes, with their own similar-but-completely-different sets of powers.
