I have taken something from you. If you want it, come and find me.

Lost and Found OCT is an Original Character Tournament on Deviantart. It is set in a remote mountain hotel, the home to a legendary shapeshifter known only as The Thief. He is said to be able to steal anything, be it a physical object, a person, or even something intangible like a memory. This enigma has taken something from each of the competitors, and challenged them to try and get their possessions back by winning a fighting tournament against his other victims. How far will they go?

This OCT provides examples of:

    General tropes

  • Affably Evil: Mama is a serial killer, and has offed innumerable people in the two years since she initially started her spree. But she's too gosh darned cute and friendly to hate!
    • At least until she freaks out and brutally bashes Fizz's head in during Round 4, and the Thief steals her capacity for kindness toward others.
  • All Deaths Final: Though the Thief can steal away mortal wounds before a character actually dies from them, if the character in question does die he can't resurrect them. It is implied in Mama's final round entry that he tried to steal from Death once, and the nick in his ear was a warning shot from the Grim Reaper that the Thief needed to clear off.
  • The Alliance: Fenix is trying to create one out of the Thief's victims.
  • Almighty Mom: Mama don't take sass from no one.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Depending on the individual interpretation, with the Thief sometimes it's hard to tell if his motives are evil, boredom, or something else entirely.
  • Amplified Animal Aptitude: Makes things kind of weird when you have fully sentient characters fighting for the keys to zoo inclosures.
  • And Your Reward Is Clothes: You could make a case for this for everyone who made it to round three and their primped out clothing. Could also be invoked for those who win round five.
  • Anyone Can Die: Though it only becomes canon if the killer wins.
  • Artificial Limbs: Aureus has a mechanical left hand, as well as Shade with two mechanical paws.
  • Ascended Extra: Mr. Inconsistent, the one-eyed wolf, was originally created as a desk clerk in Gar's audition. He has since been adopted into more or less everyone's continuity, and has been seen doing tasks ranging from makeshift nurse to cook and everything in between.
    • You could also make a case for several of the corvids in various entries.
  • Asian Fox Spirit: Dolly is on a quest to get back her stick from the Thief, and hopes to earn her nine tails in the process.
  • Attempted Rape: It was implied that Dal was trying to do this in Allony's flashback/nightmare in her first round. Then, of course, Cherr appeared and violently interrupted the albino.
  • A Wizard Did It
Subir: How can you play a flute with a beak like that?
Eigani: I told you, it's a magic flute.
  • Bad Boss: The Thief, though how much so depends on the writer.
  • Battle in the Rain: What Mama and Tayan's fight in round three turns into.
  • Benevolent Architecture: It's awfully convenient how that meager hotel keeps manifesting new rooms as the plot demands that make no sense to be in any hotel, much less a meager one.
  • Berserk Button: When Fenix finds out that the object Motthew is fighting to retrieve is a shotgun he completely flips.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: Mama's tail has a clump of poison quills on the end of it, just like the ones on her back.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Quite a few of Mama's opponents find this out just a bit too late...
    • The ever polite, patient Aureus reveals in the final round that even he can be pushed too far.
Aureus: You and the Thief want us to see the folly of our ways, is that it? The "folly" of trying to live with some regard for anyone other then yourself? You wanted chaos, well here it is!
  • Big Eater: The only logical explanation as to how Allony ate a loaf of cheese-filled bread the same size as her.
  • Big Fancy Castle: Artistic license has lead to a few of the competitors making the location of the tournament one of these. Despite the fact that the story page specifically says the Thief's hideout is a meager hotel.
    • In Hunter and Kishan's Round Two it even spawned an armada of ships at one point.
  • Big Red Devil: Fox, in every conceivable way.
  • "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word: Foxface has been blackmailed by the thief to keep quiet about his thievery against her, as revealed Lava Dog's Round 1 epilogue's canon.
  • Black Market: Frequently referenced by Cecilia as the place where she sells her stolen goods. She also met Sylvester there.
  • Blessed with Suck: Alistair has the ability to breath a mist that freezes anyone who breathes it in from the inside out, but thanks to the Thief he can be killed by breathing in his own venom.
  • Bloodbath Villain Origin: Vincent's backstory was this.
  • Blow You Away: Cecilia uses wind to fuel her incredible running ability.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Expressed by the Thief in Mama's round four entry. He evidently has reasons that are perfectly logical to him for the things he does. They are just kind of weird for anyone that isn't an immortal supernatural being to grasp.
  • Break the Cutie: Done to Mekuro by the Thief at the start of round 4, to get him to stop motivating the stolen characters to try escaping.
  • Broomstick Quarterstaff: In the fight against Mama, Sylvester breaks an umbrella off of one of the tables near the pool and uses it as an improvised staff.
  • Call-Back: The round teaser for Tayan vs. Mama, which references the vase Tayan broke in Round One. The one that killed his opponent.
  • Canine Companion: Balloon to Nelly. Possibly also Kishan to Hunter.
  • Cerebus Syndrome: As the tournament progresses, rounds grow progressively darker.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: The Thief has a permanent, spiral tipped one on no matter what form he shapeshifts into.
  • Child Soldiers: Adam was one of these before his miraculous escape, and subsequent age up by the Thief.
  • Clever Crows: Corvids in general are something of a motif for the overall storyline. The Thief regularly transforms into magpie, crow, and raven forms, and he also keeps a number of corvidae as pets and messengers.
    • Sar (who has the power of telekinesis) is even turned into one after losing Round Two, thanks to Mama's wish to remove the tasmanian devil from existence. The Thief just gave her a new one.
  • The Chosen One: Allony is this.
  • Claustrophobia: Codie finds to her dismay that she suffers from this after being locked in a dark basement with no way out.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Aleks, oh so very much.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Sar swears a lot. Like, a lot. She drops f and s-bombs with stunning regularity.
    • A similar case could be made out of Hunter. The one that actually drops them.
  • Compelling Voice: In a manner of speaking everyone has this power over Nelly since the Thief stole her ability to refuse a command.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: A lot of the characters who got a cameo in the final hadn't been seen in a long time, or at all in the entries of either of the finalists. And there were a LOT of cameos.
  • Cool Gate: How a good number of the contestants got to the hotel.
  • Costume Porn: Everyone was excited for the opportunity to put their characters in formal attire for the dinner party during Round Three.
  • Cradling Your Kill: Mama was seen doing this on the very first page of her audition.
  • Curious Qualms of Conscience: Mama has been experiencing these thanks to her murderous motivation having been stolen.
    • Vincent also suffered from these due to the spirits of his brother and mother trying to remind him of his real personality.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Terotail has one fang always showing. It only serves to enhance his preexisting adorableness.
  • The Dead Have Names: Tayan's Round Two entry featured a list of everyone who had been killed in the tournament so far, and by who. So far the total death count includes Hazel, Avonna, Rin, Chyro, Prime, Shade, Fox, Maikeru, Arundel, Fizz, Gar, Calcifer, and Aleks. Santiago is on the list but is in fact alive.
    • The list, titled Memento Mori, has been generally adopted into the overall canon.
  • Deadly Doctor: Aeja is a serial killer who dissects her victims with surgical precision. For Science!
  • Demoted to Extra: TORE is mostly a background character for the duration of his first round comic.
    • The same can be said of Balloon in Alistair and Hazel's round one, who doesn't show up at all and is only referenced when the Thief transforms into her.
  • Depending on the Writer: It is often difficult to keep other people's characters consistent, especially in early rounds where they don't have much development to speak of.
  • DePower: Vincent's telepathic mapping ability is taken from him after he is defeated by Tayan in Round Two.
  • Despair Event Horizon: One is artificially imposed on Mekuro when the Thief steals his capacity for hope. Given the craptastic life he has led and his current dire circumstances, this leaves him practically a vegetable unable to do anything but sob as he gradually goes insane from despair.
  • Disability Superpower
    • Hunter (the anthro one) is blind, but compensates for it with extrordinary hearing and echolocation that make him the best thief in his home forest.
    • Hunter (the non-anthro one) is entirely deaf as well, but this is somewhat assuaged by his mental link with Kishan.
    • Vincent's sight was stolen by the Thief, but this doesn't impair him hardly at all because he has a telepathic power that maps his entire world by "aura."
  • The Dividual: Kishan and Hunter, courtesy of a Psychic Link.
  • Downer Beginning: For some, losing their stuff was a tragedy in itself.
  • Downer Ending: In many rounds, and things seem to be headed that way overall.
  • Dramatic Irony: Gar is fighting in the tournament because he believes the thief has stolen his master. In reality, what was stolen was his memory of the fact that his master is dead.
  • Dream Sequence: Often used to convey backstory or the motivations of competitors.
  • Ear Notch: On the Thief whenever he is in a mammal form.
    • Also Aureus after Round One.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted in the case of Mekuro. He doesn't really forgive Codie for killing Calcifer, he just decides to move on.
  • Easy Amnesia: At the start of round three, Rhel does not remember that she's still in the tournament.
  • Enclosed Space: For those locked inside the Hotel for Round 1.
    • As well as for Mama's Round 4.
  • Evil Smells Bad: The Thief's breath smells of "sour milk and despair" apparently.
  • Exact Words: Paul asked for Codie to "guess my name." He was using Rhel's mouth at the time, but it was not Rhel speaking. So both Rhel and Rhelta were technically the wrong answer.
  • Eye Scream: Mama accidentally puts out both of Sylvester's eyes with her quills in Round One.
    • After a significant amount of Character Development, she puts out her own eyes in the final round, partially as penance for what happened to Sylvester.
  • The Eyes Have It: Often a clue to the audience that the Thief is spooking about.
  • Facial Markings: Spiritual foxes like Tohjo have face markings related to the element they can harness.
  • Fantastic Racism: It is something of a plot point in Nelly's entries that quadrupedal creatures are discriminated against by bipeds for supposedly being lower on the evolutionary chain. This is why Nelly walks upright, despite the damage it does to her back given that her physiology is more suited to walking on all fours.
    • This has since been adopted more generally into the overall canon.
    • Arundel and the NPC corgi chef are the two most racist characters toward quads. In an interesting reversal, Yucca is rather wary of anthros. Which only makes it more hilarious when she keeps getting paired with them.
  • Fetch Quest: The Thief is fond of subjecting Fizz to these. In round two he was tasked with finding a single ringing phone in a room full of phones. In round three Fizz had to search for an unidentified object belonging to the Thief that had been misplaced in the mist realm.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Aeja and Aureus are both from the past; the former a medieval setting, and the later from the 1800s. Although it is somewhat unclear exactly what time period the story takes place it, the general consensus is that it is sometime close to the present day.
  • Flashback: Used a lot.
  • Forbidden Friendship: Many people see Gar's loyalty to his vampire master as this, given the propensity of vampires to kill people and Gar's unfailingly sweet nature.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Somewhat literally with Sahmir, who has lost his inherent djinn powers thanks to the Theif taking his memory of how to use them.
  • Freak Out: Mama suffers one near the end of Round 4 when she thinks she is trapped in a tomb. When she is finally let out, the results are... not pretty.
  • Getting Smilies Painted on Your Soul: Nelly is forced into a state of utter calm for most of round two, to the point that she isn't even really bothered by being ordered to kill Gar. At least until it's reversed later.
  • Give Me Back My Wallet: Cecilia catches Roberts making off with her wallet in the audition and promptly calls him on it.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: Occasionally a character will convince their opponent to forfeit because one of the objects they are trying to recover is clearly more valuable then the other. This is how Aleks defeated DaVinci.
    • However, it is subverted more often then played straight. Even in cases where it is blatantly obvious to a character that pursuing their own rather menial stolen object means the death of someone else or the loss of their loved one, they will refuse to back down. Lampshaded in Mama's round four entry where it was noted that anyone who made it all the way to round four was probably not going to be willing to surrender, so discussing what each of them had lost was moot.
  • Gut Feeling: The other contestants sure get suspicious of the kind, motherly figure who only wants what's best for them.
  • Hates Being Touched: Del gets very violent every time Sahmir so much as reaches towards her.
  • Hates Baths: Lava Dog
  • Heart Trauma: Subverted in that Vincent removing Tayan's heart actually saves his life by preventing him from bleeding to death.
  • Hell Hotel: The setting for the tournament.
    • Rather amusingly lampshaded in Gar's audition, where the "HOTEL" sign has it's "O" and "T" blacked out so that the sign reads "H__EL"
    • This has caught on, as several entries now feature "H__EL".
  • Hell Hound: Fox is literally the canine son of Satan.
    • Chyro, Reaper, and DaVinci as well.
  • Heroic Willpower: Averted with Nelly; the Thief stole her ability to refuse a command. So she no longer has heroic willpower.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: The Thief points out the irony of Tayan taking near psychopathic pleasure in inflicting pain on Vincent when his logic is that Vincent is... a murderous psychopath.
  • Hidden Weapons: Codie has a sizable quantity of knives hidden under her clothing.
  • Horse of a Different Color: Norri for Dittany, resulting in their Round 1 teaser title to be named after this trope.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Maikeru set up a rockfall to slow down Yucca, but that same rockfall ends up killing him.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Mortals rather then humans, but this is more or less the argument made by the Thief.
  • I Choose to Stay: Mama, in keeping with her promise at the beginning of the story, willingly stays at the hotel after the other competitors all return home.
  • I Have Your Wife: A significant number of the contestants are fighting to reclaim a stolen friend or loved one.
  • Impossible Thief: The Thief can steal anything, from anyone. Memories, items, abstract concepts like will power and motivation, literally anything.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Motthew uses a lamp as his weapon. There is nothing special about it at all. It is simply a lamp with its shade taken off.
  • In Which a Trope Is Described: The titling theme for Arundel's entries. Doubles as Exactly What It Says on the Tin.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Nelly goes right into the heart of the Thief's lair to get her scoop on him.
    • And also to get back her ability to refuse a command. Because Ella Enchanted syndrome kind of sucks.
  • Invisible to Normals: Sahmir, being a djinn, exists only on the spiritual plane and can only be percieved by Arundel, who he is magically linked to, and those with a connection to the spirit world.
    • The same applies to anyone trapped in the Thief's fog dimension. They can see people on the outside, but those people can't see or hear them.
    • Subverted in Mama's case because the jay guardian makes it possible for her to do so.
  • It Amused Me: Why the Thief takes things, at least according to some competitors.
  • I See Dead People: Felix Denton, who is accosted by the soul of a cat killed during the Black Plague. Also Hunter, although his blindness means he can only actually hear dead people rather than physically seeing them.
  • I Will Find You: Several of the competitors are trying to reclaim stolen loved ones.
  • I Will Punish Your Friend for Your Failure: To an extent all of the stolen friends are this, but of particular note is Mekuro, who will lose his sense of hope possibly forever if Fenix refuses to kill Codie.
  • Karma Houdini: The Thief in Mama's version of the final round. Somewhat justified in that there really isn't a lot the competitors can do to bring retribution to a being that is basically a demi-god. Possibly subverted in Aureus' version of the final, where the Thief is apparently killed. However there is some implication at the end that he may be down, but not out.
  • Killer Rabbit: Terotail, "Go ahead and let me go. And as soon as you do, I won't hesitate to rip your throat out."
  • Just Toying with Them: The Thief pulls this in Mama's version of the final round, agreeing to let Mama and Aureus tag team against him with the promise that he will not use any of his abilities except for his shapeshifting, and to beat him they need only shed a drop of his blood. He still pretty much dominates the fight.
  • Language of Magic: Koona is the only remaining being of her kind with the ability to cast magical spells (though she only knows one by heart).
  • Large Ham: Maikeru defines this trope.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: A whole heck of a lot, courtesy of the Thief. Some of the contenders have lost specific memories, others have lost all memory of their personal identity.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The Thief delivers some to Tayan and Mama in round three by throwing them out in the dark to suffer the same blindness they inflicted on their previous opponents.
  • Living Shadow: Melancholia is one, born from an even bigger one.
  • Locked in a Freezer: How Dittany defeates Pike.
    • This is also where Allony and Mel fight in Allony's first round. Thankfully, they weren't locked in for very long.
  • Magical Native American: Koona, who dresses in the [[leather and feather outfit of a stereotypical Native American and has magical powers.
  • Magic Mirror: Melancholia has one of these attached to his chest that creates nightmares for anyone that stares into it, and lures prey in by calling to them with the voice of someone they love.
  • Making a Splash: Tohjo is an elemental fox with water powers.
  • Manipulative Bastard: The Thief is remarkably good at this, pushing just the right buttons to get what he wants out of the competitors, often without them even realizing that they're being manipulated.
  • Marked Change: When Lily uses her powers, her entire body is covered in black swirled markings.
  • Mauve Shirt: Barnabas the badger from Tayan's audition.
  • Maybe Ever After: According to the artist description of her final page, the author of Aureus ships him with the NPC character Rose, though evidence in the page itself is vague enough that it could be interpreted simply as them developing a friendship based on similar backstories.
  • Merciful Minion: Occasionally the corvids turn out to be this, notably when one tries to help Umbra in round one, and when the Jay agrees to let Mama talk to those trapped in the mist world if she wins round 4.
  • Metaphorgotten: Balloon occasionally has this problem.
  • Mind Probe: In some interpretations the Thief does this to steal the emotions and memories from his victims.
  • Mind Rape: Tayan is capable of this if he can keep eye contact with the victim.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Melancholia was created by a horrible moster explicitly for the purpose of getting back his creator's stolen object. He would rather make friends.
  • Mixand Match Critters: Hazel, Subir, Eigani, and Foxface were all inspired by combinations of known animals.
  • Mood-Swinger: Avonna. Exactly why is unknown, but she is stated to have brain damage.
  • Morphic Resonance: The Thief has several minor features that are consistent no matter what form he takes on, and make him quickly identifiable both to the audience and a particularly astute character. His eyes are always black-rimmed white, his mouth is fixed in a spiral smile, he has a notch in his left ear, and he wears a bell that does not jingle.
    • In some individual interpretations he also keeps the same color scheme in all of his forms, presumably to make him even more obvious at a quick glance.
  • Motor Mouth: Balloon does not know the meaning of "concise."
  • Mugging the Monster: A few competitors tried to steal from the Thief. Yeah, it went about as well as it sounds.
  • The Nicknamer: Lava Dog, Balloon, and to a lesser extent Finn
  • No Eye in Magic: Tayan the deer can cast nightmare illusions on anyone who looks into his eyes. Cue his bafflement when the trick doesn't work on Vincent, who is physically blind but still able to functionally "see" thanks to aura sensing.
  • No Gravity for You: The Thief does this to Balloon.
    • "Now the loon really is a balloon!"
  • No Mr Bond I Expect Youto Dine: Arguably, the Round 3 prompt.
  • No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: How exactly did Aureus not plan for someone stealing his "major technological breakthrough?"
    • The Thief stole all of his notes, work, and memory surrounding the discovery.
  • No Social Skills: Having spent her entire life as a slave, Rhelta is unsurprisingly not the best at the whole interacting with other people thing. Luckily she has a mind controlling spider to take over her body and socialize for her when necessary.
  • Offing the Offspring: What Mama's husband Ash apparently did that drove him to suicide.
  • Oh, My Gods!: Several competitors say odd things.
    • Allony: "Oh my Runes!"
    • Gar: "By the First Stone!"
    • Melancholia: "Oh dear Master."
    • Tohjo: "By the Ancients!"
  • Ominous Fog: Mama gets trapped in a strange, foggy dimension for a while during her audition.
  • One-Steve Limit: There's two characters named Hunter. And to make things more confusing, they're both bats. Blind bats. Fortunately, that's about as far as the similarities go.
    • There were two Lucky's as well.
  • Only Friend: Del to Sahmir before her respect for him was stolen. The stress of the relationship downgrade is wearing Sahmir pretty thin.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Fizz, who is an intergalactic immigrant and prefers for people not to know his real name. Candle has long since forgotten his real name, and goes by a moniker he assigned himself. Also Mama, Spirit, Familiar, and arguably Codie.
  • Our Gargoyles Rock: Or in Gar's case, our Gargoyles are adorable.
  • The Penance: The reason Mama refuses to use her own venom to numb the pain after she puts her own eyes out.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Most of the female competitors had to wear one during round three. The females and Aleks.
  • Pirate: Roberts is one.
  • Playing with Fire: Fox and Fenix
  • Pocket Dimension: The portions of the Thief's collection in Round 4.
  • Power Nullifier: Both Rhelta and Dylan have one. However, where Rhelta is fighting to get hers removed so she can regain her magic, Dylan is fighting to get his back because it contains his demonic side and thus preserves his sanity.
  • Power Tattoo
    • Fox has flame markings on his legs and tails that he can transform into real flames at will.
    • Dylan has a demon mark that appears when his emotions overwhelm him and his demon nature begins to surface.
    • Finally, Lily's black tail tip turns into an inkbrush when she uses her drawing powers.
  • Psychic Link: Between Hunter and Kishan, thanks to their goddess.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: Paul is one to Rhelta, although she isn't an entirely unwilling host.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: In an odd twist, we get a very empassioned one from the Thief in Mama's round 4 entry. In it he explains why he does what he does, and why he is so willing, if not eager, to steal from mortals and play with their lives.
  • Reluctant Monster: Melancholia just wants to make friends.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: The joke that the Thief speaks in rhyme is gaining popularity.
    • It has become official canon as of Round 1's Lead-In.
  • Rich Bitch: Tohjo is a male example. He had a life of privledge and luxury because he was born an elemental fox, and he's a condescending asshole to anyone he sees as inferior to him- and he sees pretty much everyone as inferior to him.
  • Royal Rapier: Aureus employs one of these as his primary combat weapon.
  • Running Gag: It became very common for auditioners to create gift art for others in the form of head shots. Very rarely were the whole bodies ever drawn. The explanation? Decapitation.
    • The H___EL (instead of Hotel)
    • Tea and table flipping (or table destruction) at the deadlines.
  • Sadistic Choice: In round four Fenix is given the choice of killing his opponent, or preventing Mekuro from ever getting his sense of hope back. (Without his sense of hope, Mekuro would almost certainly waste away from despair before Fenix could win his freedom in the tournament.)
  • The Scapegoat: The Thief claims that the competitors are using him as one for their own misdeeds throughout the tournament, arguing that while he did steal from them, ultimately the deaths and injuries during the rounds were entirely on them.
  • Scenery Porn: What the Round Four prompt gives competitors the opportunity to do.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: The Thief is fond of trolling his competitors.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Mama just refuses to accept that not everyone wants her to mother them. At least at first.
  • Serial Killer: Mama, Vincent and Aeja all fall into this category.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Again, Balloon.
  • Shapeshifter Default Form: Though the Thief can at will take on any shape his imagination can conjure up, his preferred form is that of the extinct Tasmanian tiger, otherwise known as a thylacine.
  • Shapeshifting: The Thief himself, obviously.
    • Also Kayzu, who can shift back and forth between anthro and quad form.
    • Balthezar can shift freely between wolf and horse form.
    • Familiar can take on any form it wants, being an amorphous pile of goo.
    • Kishan, Rin, and Sahmir all used to have this power, but lost it one way or another.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Norri, who has frequent flashbacks to the horrific things she witnessed as a soldier in war.
  • Shock and Awe: Avonna can throw weak lightening bolts from her hands. Subir has green lightening that he fires from his horn.
  • Smart Ball: Though never shown to be especially smart in the past, Umbra is able to deduce not only that Mama is a killer, but also that what was stolen from her was her murderous motivation. The only impetus for this revelation was a brief look in Mama's eye.
  • Smug Smiler: You'd almost want to smack that grin off of the Thief's face if it wasn't permanent.
  • Sociopathic Soldier: Someone in the army Norri was serving with during the war killed a child. Because he was there.
  • The Speechless: Aphari's voice was stolen by the Thief. Naturally she doesn't do much talking.
    • Sparkplug, who cannot verbally speak. He communicates via flashing his abdomen.
  • Spit Take: Finn's reaction to finding out they are locked in the hotel.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: The gardener NPCs and various stolen friends in TORE's round one. They had dominant focus in the entry up until page eighteen, when the actual opponent character Fenix finally puts in an appearence. The main character himself does not show up until page twenty-four.
  • Sticky Fingers: The Thief, if it wasn't obvious.
  • Street Urchin: Allony was one of these until she met Cherr.
  • Storming the Castle: What several of the contestants thought they would be doing when they found the Thief's hotel. They were sorely mistaken.
  • Super-Speed: They don't call Cecilia "the Blur" for no reason.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Tayan in his Round 2, "No! I mean, I wasn't thinking about Avonna. I was thinking about... The necklace! Yeah heh..."
  • Symbiotic Possession: Paul seems to be this for Rhelta.
  • Sympathetic Inspector Antagonist: Lepi, a local sheriff who is trying to track down the owner of a criminal fencing operation, Motthew.
  • The Teaser: In the form of phrases referencing rounds before the actual results are put up.
  • Telekinesis: Sar is capable of this, and in her entries it seems to be the reason the Thief shows an interest in her.
  • Tempting Fate
Tayan: C'mon, what's the worst that could happen?
  • Thieving Magpie: Corvids in general are something of a motif for the overall storyline. The Thief regularly transforms into magpie, crow, and raven forms.
  • Tomboyish Name: Codie
  • Tournament Arc
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Allony really, really likes maple bars.
    • Fizz is extremely fond of root beer, so much so that his Round Four teaser even references it.
  • Tragic Hero: Gar is faithfully going to save his master, unknowing that it was the memory of his master's death that was stolen instead.
  • Translator Buddy: Paul, and occasionally the Thief, for Rhel.
  • Urban Legends: Some continuities regard the Thief in this manner.
  • Unstoppable Rage: In Aureus' version of the final, the Mist Jay flies into a frenzy upon being thwarted, even ignoring the orders of the Thief in its madness.
  • Villain Protagonist: Motthew, Terotail, and Roberts are all criminals. They are also general assholes. They are also the protagonists of their respective arcs. Then there are Vincent, Aeja, and Mama, who all kill people.
  • Wandering Minstrel: Haydn and Cozzolani were performing musicians until the Thief stole Haydn's singing voice.
  • War Is Hell: The backstory of Dittany and Norri.
  • Welcome to the Big City: How Nelly's story beings.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Mama has been implied to be this.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Sahmir confronts Del about her cold distance towards him in round three, but it does little good.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Said by Vinda to Tayan in Round One after he mind rapes Avonna with his powers.
  • What You Are in the Dark: One of the themes of Tayan and Mama's match.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Yucca's attitude toward anthros. By sheer coincidence, she's been paired with them every single round.
    • To a minor extent Tayan toward wolves, namely Mr. Inconsistent and Vincent. Justified in that they would be his natural predators.
  • Why We Can't Have Nice Things: Fenix and Calcifer accidentally destroy their own room fighting TORE in round one, and have to sleep on the couch.
  • Wings Do Nothing: Fox is too heavy for his wings to get him off the ground.
  • Would Be Rude to Say "Genocide": Fizz's aunt prefers to call it "Ascension."
  • 0% Approval Rating: For some unfathomable reason, no one seems to like how the Thief runs things.
    • Then again, it's been implied that all his workers have either had things stolen from them, or have been turned into corvids like Sar.
