Volume 1
- All the online usernames of the characters relate to either a trope or something else:
- TheRealIceHeiress (Weiss): Defrosting Ice Queen
- DaRougeFightingHood (Ruby): Little Red Fighting Hood
- LittleSunDragonSempai (Yang): A Shout-Out to another author
- NightshadeNinjaCat (Blake): Another name for 'Belladonna' is deadly nightshade. In later chapters, 'of Giha' gets appended to it.
- AftermansSpearmaiden (Pyrrha): Coheed and Cambria
- GreatMoonGuardian (Minato): His Heroic Sacrifice and current role as the Great Seal.
- Yang loves Waxing Lyrical. Among the bands and musicians she's referenced:
- Coheed and Cambria
- Black Sabbath
- Foo Fighters
- Daft Punk
- Melodia and Fionn love Foo Fighters, while Jaune and Pyrrha love Coheed and Cambria.
- Weiss likes 'executing' people. The comparison to a certain Flawless Executioner has not gone unnoticed.
- Siegfried Schnee is one long love letter to the Nibelungenlied and Berserk.
- Hazama and Fegelein are some of the personalities mentioned when Jaune compares Yang to other pranksters.
- Elsa Schnee is a walking Shout-Out:
- Her name is based off Queen Elsa from Frozen.
- Her personality is a mix of Yuki and Mikuru's. Her appearance takes more from Mikuru, though.
- Her techniques and choice of weapon call to mind Yasuo.
- Also, Melodia:
- The author draws from other mythologies and folklores for his characters:
- Fionn and Lukas are based off Celtic and Norse myths respectively (Diarmuid ua Duibhne/Cu Chulainn and Loki). Lukas' weapons are named for Loki's sons in his myths, Nari and Vali, while Fionn's weapon is named for what Fragarach and Gae Bulg usually did to their victims.
- Yukari is a Miyamoto Musashi expy. Her weapons, Twin Heavens, are named for the fighting style Musashi created.
- Siegfried Schnee and his father Siegmund are obvious.
- Alexander Arc, Jaune's uncle, is a mixture of Alexander the Great and his Fate/Zero incarnation.
- Ysengrim, Blake's dad, and Reynard, another of Jaune's uncles, are based off of French folktales.
- Originally, all of Jaune's uncles and his father would have been named for French novel characters; Valjean (Andreas), Phoebus (Alexander) and Aramis (Azur). Cota was originally named Fantine. Similarly, the youngest Arc sibling, Aria, would have been named Joanne.
- Yona's maiden name is Tell. Fitting for a Friendly Sniper.
- Beth Lupin, the caretaker, is based off of Beowulf.
- Ludwig Amadeus is named for Ludwig van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
- Emmy Valkyrie's railgun is named Gungnir, Siegfried's BFS is Balmung, and Beth is implied to wield Hrunting.
- Aspasia, Aristomache, Artemisia and Amaranthe are based off of Hercules, Perseus, Diomedes and D'Artagnan respectively, while Maeve is Scathach. Bonus points for Meaningful Name: Aspasia means 'embrace', Aristomache means 'best in battle', and Artemisia is a famed queen and a tactician- basically, the Distaff Counterpart of Diomedes. Maeve is also the Anglicized form of Medb, who herself was a Dark Action Girl.
- Fionn's weapon, Mors Certa, is named for one of Vegnagun's attacks.
- Blake: "If you think you can hurt my friends, I'm going to have to destroy that screwed illusion of yours!"
- Also: Blake: "I'm going to show these people what this badass mother can do!"
- If one reads closely, Risette and Pentakill posters are apparently plastered on Yang's walls next to Achieve Men posters.
- Summoning Mami Tomoe to not die is mentioned several times, and Velvet also summons (or attempts to summon) Homura to learn her secrets of keeping her love happy and where she wants her to be. Makes sense, does it not?
- If one looks closely during the Curtain Fics chapter, Misha is shouting "Hicchan!" during the segment when Yang turns out the lights and Chi cries out her own name.
- Reimu dolls are mentioned by Cardin during Weiss Reacts.
- The various cosplays in 'RWBY at Animecon':
- In 'Blake Reacts to Music Standoffs':
- In order, the songs are 'Lightbringer', 'Through the Fire and Flames' and 'Mirror Mirror'.
- Blake's oath involves lyrics from Manowar, Nightwish, Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, DragonForce and Altaria.
- Blake prays to Kamina, obviously, but also to Ronnie James Dio (although it isn't obvious) of Black Sabbath fame and Domon Kasshu of Mobile Fighter G Gundam fame.
- Fuckslayer makes an appearance as Blake's replacement guitar.
- Velvet's ancestor is clearly The March Hare.
- The entire chapter is just a love letter to metal bands everywhere, with some rock thrown in.
- We are NOT going to sing 'The Internet is for Porn' in front of everyone!
- Hell, the Music Festivals arc is rife with Shout Outs:
- God Knows is the song sung in the climax. Considering what happened after...
- The band name, RES Brigade, is also a Haruhi shoutout.
- The songs seen are Magia, Libera Me from Hell, The Pretender, Bad Apple, Sentry the Defiant and Bohemian Rhapsody.
- Sun and Neptune's act is a tribute to K-Pop.
- Nearly every single Badass Reactsverse character, at some point, WILL don Triangle Shades and a Badass Cape and shout "Just WHO the hell do you think I am?!". Blake is especially known for this, although Vivi and Minako have also done it.
- My name is Pyrrha Nikos! You stole my date! Prepare to die!
- Earlier, when trying to find the perfect quotes, she references A Song of Ice and Fire, BlazBlue, Galaxy Quest and Sailor Moon.
- The exchange students are clearly Kyo, Yuki, Lelouch and Aoi.
- Later:Velvet: "I am the stalker of my crush.Have withstood pain to love a distant heiress.Yet these hands will never hug Weiss-sempai.So as I pray...
- During the same trio of chapters, Nora and Ren have this conversation.Nora: I've always wondered why he keeps naming his pets Edgar.
Ren: None of them are the one in the hole.- Made funnier when one recalls that Peter Port, the Grimm-capturing professor they're talking about, is voiced by none other than Ryan Haywood. Elf confirmed this reverse reference was intentional in a PM with Khaos Omega, a big Achievement Hunter fan who caught the reference almost immediately.
- Sky: "I-In my defence, I-I didn't know that calling it a 'p-pointy demonspanker' would o-offend you so much!"
- Additional Irony points in that the person this is said to is Lucina- the person who originally suggested her weapon would be called, well, Pointy Demonspanker.
- Lucina's weapon itself bears no small resemblance to Ivy's. Her lines also reference her Leit Motif.
- Minako's cities in the Civilization chapter are Boatmurdered, Nist Akath, Headshoots and Battlefailed. Boatmurdered is even founded near wild elephants, a mountain and a river.
- Blake's capital is Giha Village.
- Tukson is one big Shout-Out to shonen anime and fighting games:
- His Aura-exploding technique resembles the Hokuto Shinken.
- He fires off a Kamehameha and a Hadoken.
- Some of his techniques include a Hurricane Kick, a Shoryuken and four stances based off of Udyr.
- Hell, his attire is based off a combination of Ryu and Kenshiro's. His appearance, voice and demeanour, however, are inspired by Lordgenome.
- Blake: Today, we are CANCELLING the Anticopalypse!
- Blake's Giga Drill Mirror Force is taken from the Abridged Series of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Gurren Lagann The Satire.
Volume 2
- The old Professor of Economics before Torchwick takes over his post was Professor Ebenezer.
- Kyubey mentions having visited Inaba before. It didn't go well, apparently.
- Zwei is implied to have been named after Ein in the Reactsverse.
- In the Halloween chapter, Ren and Pyrrha are dressed as a ninja and a pirate respectively, and also tend to come to clashes during antics. Pirates vs. Ninjas, much?
- Ozpin is dressed as Inuyasha.
- The three people the group meets are clearly Lan, Nagisa and Tomoya. Nora even attempts to execute an I'm Taking Her Home with Me! on the latter.
- The way Professor Faust drops in on Weiss during the Camping Trip arc bears no small resemblance to how Miss Yamanaka does the same thing in K-On!, right down to Weiss mistaking Faust for a ghost and having the exact same reaction Mio does.
- The Slender M-sorry, Slen D. Man's appearance provides all sorts of these:
- His phone case is a Shout-Out and a Mythology Gag to Durarara!!.
- He references Marble Hornets and Image Boards.
- His very name is a Shout-Out to One Piece.
- His introduction proper is based on how Kamina introduced himself to the first Gunmen in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
- Also, the arc ends with "And nobody ate dinner that night."
- In 'Blake Reacts to We Were Close', Blake mentions opening a Mecha Club. Part of the potential members are "S. Ikari and "R. Ayanami'".
- Yang implies that Saya attends Beacon when Mina, a vampiric bat Faunus appears in the story being reacted to.
- Doubles as a Chekhov's Gun: Isara is implied to attend Beacon in the Super Smash Bros. chapter. The girl herself later shows up in the Tankery chapter, fittingly, as the driver of the Edelweiss.
- Also doubling as a Brick Joke: The players 'Robin' and 'Lucina' that Ruby and Weiss face are implied to be Morgan and Todd from the other Reactsverse fanfic Lucina Reacts. Later, the latter fanfic reveals the other side of the game from the latter perspective.
- The Anniversary Special:
- The second segment is all reminiscent of the sequence where Yuki helplessly points a mouse at the computer in an attempt to make it move, only replacing Yuki with Elsa and the mouse with an actual mouse.
- STOP. YOU HAVE VIOLATED THE LAW.
- Mommy, mommy, it's Grimmasic Park!
- Yang's speech during the Yangilocks chapter is reminiscent of Tycho's rant about tabletop games in Penny Arcade. It also makes shout outs to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, as usual.
- Norn's Silver Crow Protocol is based off of Haruyuki's Duel Avatar from Accel World.
- Ren's Finishing Move, Lotus Palm, is similar to the technique used in Kung Fu Hustle in the end by Sing to defeat the Beast.
- Siegmund is meant to resemble Fire Lord Ozai and Heihachi Mishima, among other people. He also resembles Charles zi Britannia in attitude.
- Earlier in the Cockerel Festival, Yuna and Kasumi are seen signing up, and Cordelia is seen losing in one of the fights.
- In "Weiss Reacts to Karmic Trickery, Part 1", during her involuntary briefing with the Antic Order, Ren declares that Yang's antics as of have ended up with her following the path of the Accursed Fourth Wall Breaker Pinkamena.
- In one Weiss Reacts recap chapter, Nora also name-drops Pinkie Pie and that ElfCollaborator won't be accepting My Little Pony requests as he knows little about the series.
