Nightmare Fuel / Vocaloid

Since Vocaloid is pretty much a blank slate for whatever the composer decides to make, many of them can turn out differently than the next. These composers and songs just... decided to try and scare you. Fortunately for them ^note and unfortunately for us, these songs did.

Deino

While Deino (AKA Deino3330) is more of an artist than a producer, he does have a Youtube channel. And his videos are made in the same Surreal Horror style than the works on his Deviantart gallery, as the examples below clearly show...

• Machine Muzik. Seriously. There's a reason it used to be the page image. Just see for yourself.
• Then watch the sequel, Nehanshika. One attempted translation made a couple of lines potentially worse ("We can account for e-e-e-errors"; "Now that you're dead you sing Nehanshika-hanshika").
• Deino was also behind this little nightmare. The song itself isn't Vocaloid, although the video does involve Calcium. Character's named Calne Ca, with "Ca" pronounced as separate letters.
• BitCrushe isn't as bad as the above videos, but it's still extremely eerie.
• "Bacterial Contamination" (or Saikin Osen). The song is about an unpopular girl being mocked and bullied by others, in turn becoming a bully herself in an attempt to make herself feel better, and then committing suicide to try and get away from the "infection." In the end, she states that, even though she could die to get away from the suffering, she still couldn't even die with dignity because of the things she'd done. And the singer herself is the aforementioned Calne Ca. It certainly doesn't help that the video's filled to the brim with what appears to be human-mantis hybrids.
  • The English dubbed version (yes, it has been done) is arguably even worse . Especially the ending, where you hear the singer laughing quietly. She then says "sayonara" then devolves into insane laughter. Watch it here.
  • The lyrics for the dubbed version are also pretty disturbing, the song starts with what sounds like insane laughter, then a voice whispers "Kill yourself". The repeated "It hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts..." is also creepy.
  • The premise alone for the video is horrifying even when its allegories aren't considered. If you aren't aware of what the song is about, you're essentially watching a girl who seems to be trapped in some kind of dystopian acid-trip hell trying to fight this body-rotting disease which distorts and mutilates her, eventually consuming her. It not only looks grotesque, but painful.

Healing-P

• "Ant Observation" starts out innocently enough, with a girl (played by Rin) singing about watching ants. She then mentions a boy (Len) who liked to step on ants for fun...and then one day, he went missing. Cue a harsh scream and a horrifying chorus in which Rin describes the ants killing him, tearing him apart and eating his flesh all in nauseating detail. And then, it switches back to the original cute tone as Rin observes the ants again and gets up to leave...accidentally stepping on one of the ants herself in the process. Oh, and there's an updated version.
• "Pink Rabbit", sung by Len, is a distressingly eerie song about the titular "pink rabbit", a costumed mascot at an amusement park who is pretty quickly revealed to be a kidnapper, serial killer and child murderer. Already there's an inherent terror in the idea of a lunatic in a bunny costume luring children with his seemingly cutesy ways so that he can murder them, but the overall chaotic tone of the song makes it all the worse, as it switches from unsettlingly calm to jarringly loud at the drop of a hat. And then there's the ending, where the rabbit turns to the camera and says "Now it's YOUR turn to play with me..."

Hitoshizuku-P

• "Bad End Night". Even though the song is fairly up-beat and jazzy, it is actually quite sinister. A girl (Miku) is lost with a letter to go to some mansion. She finds it and is greeted by the other Vocaloids. Later, she tries to go to sleep, only to find that no time goes by. She runs away, only to find graves. She finds that they are pretty much planning to kill her. In her fear, she pretty much kills them all. And then the final lines...
• The P.O.V. Sequel, "Crazy Night" paints the house's residents as much more sympathetic, but is still quite sinister; turns out, their clock stopped because Miku interrupted their play and tore out the page that led to the ending. It turns out that she had to kill them to get to the ending. After doing so, however, she finds that she doesn't like the ending. As the family goes on to the next cycle (as there appears to be a time loop going on) Miku runs after them, begging them to give her another chance. They tell her that there isn't enough time but she'll "have another chance tomorrow", implying that she is now trapped in the same loop as them forever or at least until the chain is broken.
• The third installment, "Twilight Night" is more confusing and even darkly humorous than scary, but it still has its unsettling moments. For example, when the inhabitants find that the last page of their script is missing, Rin and Len say this:
  Rin and Len: Not good? Not good! Ah hahaHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
• The "True End", "Everlasting Night" actually has a Hope Spot where Miku seems to find a solution and runs to the others to tell them and save them... but then she overhears their talk about sacrificing Miku to resurrect someone else and get back to the real world and it ends with Miku having to kill herself to end the loop.
• Karakuri 卍 Burst is a loud and violent song with frightening imagery, Nightmare Faces, lots of blood and a high pitched scream (or a loud burst of static) at the very end.
• Portrait of the Pirate F is, though tame by comparison, a decidedly creepy spin on Peter Pan. To wit, a bored kid (Len) one night wishes to stay a child forever. Enter Rin as Tinkerbell, who takes him to Neverland. There, he first has loads of fun, then defeats Hook (Kaito)... and starts to get bored. He goes to the pirate ship and finds Hook's journal, then decides to take over the ship and the role of Hook. In the end, we see flashbacks showing that Kaito's character was brought in by the fairy the same way Len's was, then we see the green shoes of a new "Peter Pan" and Miku as Wendy. Apart from the obvious question of just how long has this been going on for, the creepiness factor is upped by Len's transformation into Hook and his first actions: he attacks the Indians and others with great relish, he admits he has become a greedy and cunning person who can't go back and is still obsessed with a never-ending dream, and his reaction to the appearance of a new "Peter" is a Psycho Smirk.
  • There's also the fact that Len suddenly has a hook for a hand after he becomes the new captain. Did each new Captain Hook have to chop off his own hand to play the part!?
• The fates of the Messiah's companions in Blessed Messiah and the Tower of AI: Kaito is drowned in the sea, Meiko is burned up by hellfire, IA drops to her knees in a deadly drought, Mayu is eternally trapped in darkness, Gakupo is swallowed up by the earth, Gumi is incinerated by lightning, Luka is ripped apart by gale force winds, Rin is frozen to her core, and Len is forced to crawl through fire. The kicker: they all knew what these "blessings" really were and what Miku would endure if she accepted them, so they "betrayed" her and took the curses upon themselves.
  • Near the end of the song, we see the silhouettes of the companions experiencing the so-called "blessings." Due to being silhouettes, we don't see many of the gory details, but saying that they look like they are not having fun would be a huge understatement. The worst one would have to be poor Mayu, who's shown holding her head and screaming in agony. This coupled with the wording to her "blessing" ("losing my mind in an endless darkness") implies that said "blessing" didn't actually kill her...
• Sister’s ∞ mercY has plenty of creepy, jerky animation and Nightmare Face going on in its PV, but the plot of the story is just as chilling. A nun comes to town one day, offering tea that can grant wishes to those who drink it. She demonstrates by offering tea to a peasant during a time of draught, and lo and behold, it starts raining and the crops grow abundant. It doesn't take long for the townsfolk to be subsumed by greed and lust, making all sorts of selfish and disgusting wishes (which the nun grants even while pointing out how disgusting they are being), their tea-fueled fervor highlighted by the song's frantic big-band style. (There's an implication that the nun is making money off this.) Eventually, though, the nun decides that there are other "flocks" to be "saved", and drowns the entire town in her magical tea! An unspecified time in the future, a man in dark clothing with a rosary wanders into town, and wonders: "Did they die happy...?"
  • The answer comes in the song Vampire's ∞ pathoS. Listening to it on its own, you'd think that the dark-clad man was the vampire in question, sadistically taunting the nun about how she's far from a "hero" and making you wonder if her idea of "saving" the town was drowning them all before he could get to them. However...
  • The PV of the song reveals that the nun was actually the vampire all along and the man was the one who was trying to stop her reign of terror.
• From the same albums (Heroes and Villains, side H and V, respectively), we have such charming stories as a werewolf hunter who has no idea he is the werewolf he is hunting, a Mad Scientist trying to revive a lost love, and a city destroyed by a dragon who has no idea what she is/has been doing in the slightest.
• Mr. Schadenfreude is quite a dark song, even by HxY standards: a girl (Rin) is mysteriously and gruesomely murdered in a small village, with the town's Priest (Luka) revealing that the culprit is a demon using one of the surviving townsfolk as a vessel...but she doesn't know who said vessel is. Cue a series of intense, Town of Salem-esque trials where everyone is at each other's throats, culminating in the Knight (KAITO) being murdered in the dead of night and the second Villager (MEIKO) being tried and executed for his murder after it's discovered that the Knight had her choker on him when he died. Then things go off the rails when the Priest is killed and crucified on her own altar, with the fifth and third Villagers (Len and Miku respectively) finding the fourth Villager (GUMI)'s corpse in the graveyard not long after, having written a note begging for salvation before slitting her wrists. There, Len and Miku also find the Undertaker (Gakupo) tenderly caressing the Priest's dead body, with the implication that he did this to the other victims as well when nobody was looking. Miku and Len assume he's the Devil and execute him, after which they have a toast and all seems well...until Miku collapses to the floor and it's revealed that Len was the Devil all along, murdering Miku before seemingly taking his own life as well, all while it's heavily implied that something even more sinister is going on behind the scenes...

Kikuo

• Breaking Things Into Pieces gets the point across what type of producer this person is. Do we start with the fact that if the vocals are taken out, it sounds like a rousing march? Even though the imagery is very Neon Genesis Evangelion-esque. The lyrics, you ask? It talks about a boy who can't stop breaking things. The chorus tells us that the boy can also rebuild the objects he destroyed in order to break them even more "to the point [where] you forget its original shape". Then comes the explanation: he destroys precious objects because the more memories an object goes through, the more it become attached to a person's soul, and he wishes to see someone's soul completely destroyed. He's equating property damage with homicide. And the kicker is that there is a person that loves him. His last act is to destroy every object they possess, before killing himself as his lover is now part of him. All of this, complete with deranged, nightmarish faces and girls whose bodies have shattered like glass.
  • Jayney's English cover is pretty harrowing, too.
• "Love Me Love Me Love Me" tells the story of a girl who wears a cursed collar and becomes progressively more insane in her desperate quest for approval. In the end, she breaks, accepting her fate as "happiness". The unsettling theories about the song range from overly competitive school systems to borderline personality disorder. The video that comes with it, complete with distorted images and creepy drawings, doesn't help. Oh, and the subtitles will frequently shake and change color/colour.
• "Don't Look At Me In That Way" is more gut-wrenching than scary, but some lines (and imagery) may suggest that the narrator wasn't aborted or miscarried as is commonly theorized, but killed via a car crash, while he was out riding his bike.
• Dance of the Dead is a cheerful, happy song about dancing corpses. And you should join in!
• "I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry". Horrific sexual abuse, cannibalism, or a combination of the two; take your pick.
• A Happy Death seems to be about two kids killing each other to be 'happy' in the afterlife.
• You're a Useless Child - a blunt narration of parental abuse. No self-destructive fixations, no over-the-top gore, no child-murdering dystopias, just the story of a terrible mother and her pitiful child. In the end, he kills himself.
• "We Should Not Do Bad Things" Take a seemingly happy sounding song and add lyrics about bad children being "taken away", and it becomes horrifying.
• "O Light" A song either about a girl trapped in a never-ending nightmare, or a metaphor for depression and mental illness. The visuals don't help.
  • The Hanatan version adds a layer of overwhelming desperation to the eeriness, especially during the final verse.
  • The English cover by Jubyphonic isn't any better.
  • There's another cover using Juby's translyrics, and the wailing vocals of this cover don't exactly conjure up warm and fuzzy feelings, either.
• "Ten Sho Sho Ten Sho/Reincarnation Ascension" seems to be about an endless Cycle of Revenge and reincarnation, lasting long enough for the two individuals involved to eventually reincarnate into monsters.
• "Hole-Dwelling" A song about two individuals spiraling into madness from loneliness after finding that they don't belong anywhere. The chorus repeatedly stating how one individual is the "same" as the other may indicate that the former is effectively dragging the other one down with it, into a "pit of Hell" neither feel that they can escape from nor do either of them make an attempt to escape from. Whether they are actually dead and going to Hell or letting themselves enter into an unhealthy, possibly self-destructive, lifestyle is up to interpretation. At one point, they blame the sun, the moon, the sky, and God for their situation. They both know whatever they are doing is wrong, but refuse to stop.
• "Cotton Candy" is very hard to describe, with the most common theories being that it's either about drug addiction or about someone suffering from depression or some other mental illness who's recalling happier times, if not both. That's not what makes it Nightmare Fuel. What makes it Nightmare Fuel it's the downright eerie audio distortions and reversing tracks the song has, giving an upsettling, anxiety-inducing feel to it. Most songs by Kikuo have this quirky, kinda cheerful feel to them, even when the lyrics are anything but. This one just feels... Off.
• "XxX Cat" features the graphic crushing of ... something. The chorus sings about the crushing of various body parts, including the eyes, nose, ears, mouth, kneecaps, shoulders, elbows, shins, and the "soft insides of its head." The singer (Miku Hatsune) remarks late in the song that the painful and pleasurable things in life can't be seen, heard, spoken about, or smelled. Given how the chorus sings about crushing the eyes, nose, ears, and mouth the most, that detail probably isn't a coincidence and doesn't bode well for the singer. In any case, the singer desperately wants to forget whatever got crushed and to live a carefree life.
• Kikuo teams up with Hanatan to bring us "Hitogawari" - a song about, you guessed it, abuse. More specifically, it's about a girl who escapes an abusive relationship and finds herself with a kind and caring partner. However, the girl is so traumatized from the abuse that she believes that she can never truly be happy. The visuals paint a disturbing picture as the girl in the video alternates between calmly swaying to the music to weeping to frantically clawing at her face, all the while her face, arms and legs become more and more heavily bandaged. You can hear the desperation and distress in Hanatan's haunting vocals.
  • The very last line of the song is "Yes, that's why I'll be lonely forever..."

Machigerita-P

...You know, let's just say most of the songs by Machigerita-P (except for a couple of surprisingly cute songs he created for Miku) are made to scare you. And horribly scare you they do.

• Dark Woods Circus and Madness; Because of Her Knowledge. The fan artists are of no help. At the very end of a fanmade PV for "Dark Woods Circus," the girl we've been following since the beginning become part of the circus. And then she hands you a flyer...
  • The novel dives into a more disturbing truth: the Circus cast is mostly made up of undead people. The diva was murdered by her crush, the twins were abandoned and fused together. The guy who eats cold stuff? He's a werewolf and he just gets kidnapped out of nowhere.
  • Contrary to popular belief, Machigerita has gone on the record on his blog stating that "Madness; Because of Her Knowledge" (or, as another translator called it, "Wide Knowledge of the Late, Madness") is not, in fact, related to "Dark Woods Circus," and is a standalone song. Arguably, this makes it even more disturbing— because if not the circus's precursor, just what in the world is it about?
  • The singers are credited as "the patients in the mental asylum". If the correctly translated title is anything to go on, it's a case of Go Mad from the Revelation. What that revelation is, however, remains a mystery.
• Rotten Girl, Grotesque Romance. It's basically about a very jealous stalker girl, who spies on the object of her affections. When she realizes that person is seeing another girl, she goes insane and plans to kill the girl and send her dismembered in a box to the person. And possibly kidnaps and murders them. That, coupled with the audio, piano, and random screeches in the music, makes all the more horrifying. It gets scarier when you listen to the Rockleetist version, where you can actually understand it. Oh, and don't forget the picture of Miku in the video. And the sound of her cutting off a kitten's head to give to her boyfriend. And here's a lovely PV.
  • If you think about it, they probably weren't ever together to begin with...
  • The PV has the stalked boy keep the corpse of the murdered girl in his apartment for days. He even brushes its hair.
• Red Swamp Bottom (originally made as a sequel to "Dark Woods Circus") is about a young girl in hell. Special mention has to go to the tortured screams in the beginning and this particular set of lyrics:
  It hurts, my skin is burning
  My intestines are being dragged
  Now look, rotten fruit in my melting eyes
  Leave no trace of themselves
• Hateful Wonderland. The video's artist is the same from "Rotten Girl, Grotesque Romance," so the imagery is quite unnerving...
• The Full Course For Candy Addicts. "I love you so much I could eat you." The song is about her describing what her lover tastes like. The giggle at the very end does not help.
• Once again by Machigerita, Broken Human Machine. The scary thing? The translated lyrics are most likely about prostitution and abortion. Now available with proper subtitles.
• Machigerita-P's done it AGAIN, using either Miku Append Light or Miku Append Vivid, in "Shukujo Berry no Tsukurikata", also known as "How to Make A She-trawberry". And it's most likely some kind of unholy cross between horror and porn from the lyrics. It's either about well... rape, or about someone eating a strawberry cake. Probably both, knowing Machige. Listening to the song with that knowledge alone is unsettling in itself, but the PV isn't much better, what with its depiction of a disturbingly skinny girl with a Slasher Smile and sickly yellow eyes.

• Sweet Poison Factory by Machigerita-P. Your Mileage May Vary, but if the lyrics don't scare you, the images are enough to overstimulate your senses... (Don't watch if you have epilepsy or if flashing lights give you migraines.)
• Okaasan ("Mother") is the undeniable master of all HONF for Vocaloid, HANDS DOWN. Lyrics are in the comments.
  • Now available with subtitles.
  • Fridge Horror for those who understand Japanese: the lyrics are written in hiragana, without katakana or kanji. Standard Japanese writing uses a mixture of all three writing systems; writing entirely in hiragana is considered childish because it implies you don't know foreign words (which katakana is used for) or how to write the complicated kanji characters. Implying that the singer is a little girl.
  • Then there's the remake, Okaasan Rebirth. If you thought the original was disturbing... This version is also notable for containing a backmasked message hidden in it at some point, though it hasn't been subbed or translated anywhere yet. However, online translators all seem to translate the final line of it the same way: "I'm right behind you now." If one google translates the Youtube page and reads the comments, this translation is further supported by how several Japanese users mention looking over their shoulders.
• Gyakuzai Koushinkyoku. The lyrics are very confusing, but fans have theorized out that Kaito and Miku were in a relationship, but then he dumps her (saying that 'if a toy gets old, just throw it away') for Meiko. That's not the Nightmare Fuel. The Nightmare Fuel is that Kaito then murders her for no real reason and manipulates Meiko into ignoring it. The ending implies that he's going to do the same to Meiko if he sees someone prettier. And that's not even getting into the really creepy Psychotic Smirk in the PV.
• Strange Masquerade Halloween. Upon reading the translation, the story goes like this. A group of people were invited to someone’s house for a Halloween party. Their invitations (which the song says “has an address, but no sender”) tell them to cover themselves with a mask so their wishes will be granted. At the party, there is banquet of food, sweets, drinks, and, well, something censored, as we see blurred items among the food floating down the screen. Then, the song talks about the guests spending who knows how long dancing, eating, and obtaining sexual pleasure. And then… “The mask – I –can’t – take – it – off! Aa – aaa – aaa – aaaa!” Just then, everyone changes into monsters (“squirming in pain while laughing”), each one resembling the masks they wore, while the owner of the house watches while laughing.
• Greetings from the bottom of the Well seems to be about either children or evil/vengeful spirits trapped in the bottom of the well, and how much they hate you. How it's sometimes black and white, or the hand that grabs you at the end doesn't help.
• This song is surprisingly on its own not that terrifying, and appears to describe a very, ahem, amorous Miku talking about her desires and what she wants from her lover. The video however...
• Pierrot, a song about a Monster Clown who supposedly loves children and lets them ridicule him as much as they want, but when they grow tired of his act, he snaps, kidnaps them, and tortures them to death. Not to mention the constant close-ups of his less-than approachable face in the PV and the rape undertones in the lyrics.
  Under my excitedly echoing voice, your face is becoming shaved away.
  The stench of blood is very pleasant to me!
  Even when you become disfigured,
  my hands simply will not stop.

Masa Works Design

• Masa used to be a relatively unknown producer, but those who encountered some of his music will be rattled. While the videos may be creepy, having the lyrics translated make it all the more unnerving.
• Masa's best known series of songs, dubbed "the Onibi series", seems to be telling the tale of two girls, Mai (portrayed by GUMI) and Akari (portrayed by Miku). Mai gets kidnapped by Akari's clan and becomes a cannibal after eating human flesh, and that's just the beginning! The 8 songs in the series dictate the lives and disturbing events of these two girls, as well as another set of Miku/GUMI characters and an Amanojaku played by Rin. Multiple other characters outside of the songs and media forms intertwine to form a truly gruesome story of the lion and the kitsune.
  • The worst case offender in this series is "The Spider and the Kitsune-like Lion", where Akari is captured by Ryou's clan and tortured to death, and Ryou (GUMI) is turned on by her pain. It's highly graphic and very not safe for work. This song was set to private on Masa's Youtube channel (ell182a) and removed from Nicovideo for good reason.
  • "The Fox's Wedding" (not to be confused with the one listed below by OSTER Project). The way the lyrics are sung feels like Madness Mantra. Turn on the captions. It's currently Masa's most popular video, with FOUR different PV's for different versions of the song.
    "I want to eat you, want to eat you, I oh so want to eat you."
  • And then there's "Onibi", which currently provides the page image. This song is about a vengeful spirit trying to kill her murderer (as usual, they're respectively portrayed by Miku and Gumi). The chorus and the occasional ghostly moans make it worse.
• The Sisters series, meanwhile, consists of a trio of songs that tie together: "On My Seventh Birthday", "A Single Heart and I", and the finale "I, Upon the Pair's Celebration". These songs tell a story of two sisters— one older and one younger. The younger sister, Amaterasu, stabs and kills her older sibling Tsukuyomi over a petty dispute. This forces Amaterasu to impersonate her deceased older sister to cover it up (On My Seventh Anniversary). 12 years later, Amaterasu starts to feel strange. She's been picking up her dead sister's mannerisms, and sometimes forgets who she really is. She wonders— am I the older sister after all? She doesn't understand this strange phenomenon. She then realizes that her sister's spirit is possessing her. She wonders if she even killed Tsukuyomi at all, and begins to believe that she is really the original older sister (Me and a Heart). When Amaterasu turns 20, she decides to shed her guise and become herself again. She can't. She inevitably finds herself looking in a mirror with scissors in her hand, half of her hair in her style and half of it in Tsukuyomi's. She hears a baby's cry and realizes that the spirit of her sister is in her belly. She doesn't take it too well. The worst part is that the entire thing was foreshadowed from the very first song.
• Another trilogy Masa made is Maha's Story, and it is equally as horrifying as The Sisters Series. Instead of traditional Japanese nightmare fuel, Masa opts for a more modern style of horror. The three songs, Enkantada, Chinese Dogma, and Mentalism Maria, tell the story of the violent Maha Cult and the deplorable things they do. Mentalism Maria focuses specifically on Maria Kanazaki and how she became a member after conducting inhumane experiments to study human souls. And, you know what's worse? Maha's Story takes place in the same universe as the Onibi Series, only centuries later.
• Recently, Masa has released yet another horrifying trilogy, the Secret's Story. Consisting of the songs "The Secret Goldfish", "The Secret Box", and "A Blessing on the Secret's End", this cryptic series tells the story of two girls who cut off each other's body parts for an unclear purpose.
• Some of Masa's standalone songs are pretty disturbing, too. "Disease Princess" is about a girl who is extremely obsessed with beauty, to the point where it drives her insane. In the end, she mutilates her face in order to become "beautiful", and dies of blood loss. "Bloody Mary" (which has since been removed from Masa's official channel) is an extremely harsh-sounding song with frightening artwork and vocals, and lyrics that resemble a Madness Mantra.

mothy/Akuno-P

mothy (master of the heavenly yard) had gotten a reputation from the Evillious Chronicles; it has its own "wiki", and most of his songs end with someone being murdered or worse... Has its own page here.

• Wendy By Mothy well... we can already tell it won't be happy despite the cheery tune. With a girl trying to follow Peter Pan by jumping out of a window and dying, how could it be?
• Flames of Yellow Phosphorous is a delightful retelling of The Little Match Girl where she burns down her father's house and is consequently burned at the stake for her crime.

Utsu-P

• Parasite. A hard, thrashing, dark metal song featuring distorted vocals and lyrics that are probably about mosquitoes that carry deadly disease... written from the point of view of the mosquitoes. Now with an equally terrifying English dub!
• "Black Hole Artist," also by Utsu-P. Rin's face is horrifying.
• "The Magic of Massacre". The song is about GUMI coming up with things of her own imagination, inspired by an egg in a microwave, including a hand with an eyeball in it that shoots lasers at everything and the fingers wiggle around and... eugh. The whole video would give one the creeps. At the end, the egg explodes INTO BLOOD and smoke fills the microwave. Fun, fun, fun!!
• "Poster Girl's Prank". The imagery in this song's video is more tame than others and seems to be less explicit, and more dark-artsy. Miku. Rin, and GUMI are portrayed as idol girls with abstract artwork for faces. Burton-esque men in suits and ties with animal heads are also featured. The scary parts though, are some of the lyrics: while the first battery of questions from what appears to be an interview are innocent enough, they turn right around (An adoring male fan?/Bring him back home with me!", "What are your favourite foods?/The hands and feet!")
  • A girl is also implied to have been thrown away by the singers' employers, and "disappeared to the nooks of Edo". They tell about a girl selling herself out to prostitution because society is rough. The entire song is a protest against the J-pop machine, which is cool, but to someone who doesn't know about all that stuff it's just straight-up nightmare inducing.
• Brainwashing Technique of the Monkey Dance (epilepsy warning by the way), which is more or less a half musical clusterfuck describing how despite humans seeing trained monkeys performing for food as cute or silly, we are still no better than them and in fact may actually be worse.

Others

ATOLS

• AWAODORI (MAJOR epilepsy warning) is a very good example of Nothing Is Scarier. The video is nothing but a red circle (representing the rising sun on the Japanese flag) pulsing as the music grows heavier and faster. Not helping is Miku's hauntingly soft voice and the lyrics' implication of something VERY horrible happening at 'the end of summer'.
  • There's also a cover using the Vocaloid Sachiko, who is designed to sing traditional Japanese music, and it just adds to the creepy atmosphere. Even worse is how her voice begins distorting near the climax of the song...
• Uchuu Daikibou 11 Jigen Kouzoutai doesn't even have a "video" in itself—just a black screen except for the title of the song at the end. The music is oppressive and heavy-sounding, almost like deep-toned "Psycho" Strings, while Miku's vocals sound as if someone is fast-forwarding and then slowing them down in quick succession. Eesh.
• Tokoyo has some rather unsettling imagery, being a song commenting on the declining population in Japan. The PV shows various shots of decaying or old parts of a Japanese city, followed by clips of what looks to be bedridden elderly people in a hospital. Then the song opens up again with loud, tense music over a video of an old woman wearing a Miku wig, and then abruptly ending with a picture of a box of ashes.

Babuchan

• Mother of Pearl Bones. With an unsettling PV, glitch parts in the vocals, and the unsettling lyrics, what's to come? Well, it's learned that she dies in a fire, a theory states, and her "lover" is dead, too.
• Another great from Babuchan, Tears of an Artificial Eye (with subs) The song is apparently about a doll coming to life and killing its owner.
• LOLOLOL. The music is extremely subtle, mocking in the beginning, and the video itself is full of eerie imagery. The chorus itself is loud and alarming (a warning to anyone with their volume on high), and the beat is rife with tension. And during the middle of the song, the vocals are gone but you can vaguely hear someone droning "Stop"... It's unsettling, and that's not even on the subject of the lyrics...
• That happy child/Anoko na shiawase ga is a song told entirely through shadow puppets, with an eerie melody and lyrics, which is only fitting. After all, it's about Cronos eating his own children, and the last of them taking his scythe.
• 0 Peoples Waltz is from the perspective of a young child, and the imagery present in the PV is unsettling. The drawings depict something happening to the protagonist one night, which seems to consume the world around them as well as groups of other people. Furthermore, the song's possible meaning is gut wrenching if one is familiar with World War II history; the night things go south for the protagonist is August 6th, the same date the Hiroshima Bombing took place.
  • Time seems to progress normally after the event...then the dates tick over to August 32nd.

Crusher-P

• This. It's a Megurine Luka song, in English, based on the following Rugrats theory: "The Rugrats really were a figment of Angelica's Imagination. Chucky died a long time ago along with this mother, that's why Chaz is a nervous wreck all the time. Tommy was a stillborn, that's why Stu is constantly in the basement making toys for the son who never had a chance to live. The DeVilles had an abortion, Angelica couldn't figure whether it would be a boy or a girl thus creating the twins."
• This song about HIM from The Powerpuff Girls. The PV shows a silhouette that looks like Bubbles and her Octi doll is on the floor in front of her with HIM's sinister shadow radiating from it. HIM tells Bubbles "not to cry" and that he wants her to "smile". He then tells her to "give in to her fight" and "take the anger deep inside and bring it into light". at the end, his message gets more and more garbled and then he promises to Bubbles that he will give her anything she wants. He then tells her that she's "his to control"... and to "prepare to attack".

Hachi

• With a title like Hold, Release; The Rakshasa and the Corpse, what else can you expect? Hachi has officially stated that the song is about the supposed innocence of children, and how cruel they can really be... but that other interpretations could also be valid.
• "In a Rainy Town, Balloons Dance With Devils," the demo form of the below "Ward Room 305," by Hachi, features an eerie, surreal sound and lyrics, and the PV has been animated to match.
  • "Ward Room 305", the completed form of the song, is likewise fairly nightmarish in lyrics, and the fan theories used to create the fan-animated PVs are accordingly dark.

Hiiragi Kirai

• Hiiragi's songs are often only mildly creepy at best, but it's the BGA that does most of the work.
  • "Autophagy", "EvA", "Bocca della Verità", "Möbius": These are a series of four songs that feature nearly-identical BGAs with a single menacing-looking character staring at the viewer. When the song reaches its last verse, they transform into demonic forms, complete with Black Eyes of Crazy.
  • Connected to Autophagy (as listed above) is "Bottom" and it is one of the few songs of Hiiragi Kirai's that has Nightmare Fuel in its lyrics. Specifically, the singer is threatening to kill an unknown person, possibly the listener.
  • "Love Ka?" ^note The song name is intended to be a pun on "ラブカ" (Frilled Shark) and "Love": Features a Yandere shark monster girl with a perpetual Slasher Smile on her face and Black Eyes of Crazy. At the 2:12 to 2:14 mark (where the song reaches its climax), a Jump Scare will appear; the girl turs around, then stares at you with a frenzied expression until the climax ends. And then it gets repeated AGAIN, at the end. But then, if you're really into that stuff, this can turn out as Creepy Cute...
  • "Faraway": Halfway into the song, the background starts distorting and the scenery turns from a bright playground/carnival into a nightmarish hellscape, some of the stuffed animals turn into creepy eyes, and the scenery glitches out. This is all complete with the song itself being akin to a creepy circus theme with dark lyrics to boot.

Ive

• In general, Ive has a uniquely bleak worldview, complete with morbid lyrics, his preference of tuning his Miku in an eerily serene or monotonous fashion and the occasional frightening MV. Basically every other song could be Nightmare Fuel in one way or other.
• Rinri no Hitsugi's MV consists of a series of semi-realistic greyscale images of a woman tearing blood and black butterflies, and the last shot is a faceless woman with her whole face replaced by what seems to be a mask or scars.
• The lyrics of Heta na Uso o Tsukanaide are so morbid that it leaves nothing to the imagination — it's basically about the resentment of a girl who killed her abuser (presumably her mother) and killed herself, written in a way similar to a snuff film.
• Hito wa Obake ni Naru is largely written in metaphors, but the title is based on a poem about the Hiroshima bombings and the lyrics make references about the tragedy, on a victim's viewpoint.

Kodakami

• Engloids are not exempt from this. Big Al's Beat Beat Tick Tick. There's a line implying that Al fell from very high up, and then the realization that the picture wasn't him covered in blood from a murder - It was his OWN. He's laying on the ground DYING, and the beating and ticking is his heart slowly stopping as he does.
  Beat. Beat. Tick. Tick.
• From the same writer, we have Halloween Requiem (updated version) A group of teenagers try to summon dead spirits but it goes horribly wrong and a bunch of evil spirits emerge from their Ouija board. The spirits are extremely offended at the fact that nobody is afraid of them because of Halloween and promptly start attacking people to "strike fear back into their hearts (and it's implied that their first victims were a bunch of trick-or-treaters). Leon is shown being in a total panic while running from demons. Miriam, a nun, believes that it's the apocalypse. Lola is suddenly attacked in her own home. Big Al, a doctor, tells a wounded Leon/Sweet Ann that he can't help him because "the hospital is overflowing" and that he should probably stay there because "it's safer there" and "free space is growing" (implying that more people are dying than he can treat). Sonika/Sweet Ann is lying in an ambulance/the hospital and implied to be dead at the end of her verse. Eventually something happens that causes the monsters to leave, but their fear remains in the world's heart as it's revealed at the end that due to the incident nobody celebrates Halloween anymore; instead, they celebrate the day that October passes. At the end, the Engloids give us some advice: "If you choose to laugh at evil make sure you think twice".

momocashew

• Pumpkin March. Oliver is torturing someone-at one point giving them a Glasgow Grin- while talking about how Humans Are the Real Monsters.
• Tarantula features Oliver eating a live tarantula. And describing the sensation of eating it. In English. Yes.

mondaiji-P

• Even Yuki isn't exempt from horror songs. This artist has apparently done a series of Vocaloid noise songs. Including more by Yuki. absence seems to most resemble a traditional song, but it's still incredibly oppressive and hopeless-sounding. The translation of the lyrics doesn't help. "That child isn't anywhere... that child isn't anywhere... that child isn't anywhere... that child isn't anywhere..."
• crushed Mary is... something else, that's for sure. There isn't much in the way of lyrics, so interpretations are sparse, but the "music", if you can call it that, is horrific and cacophonic. This is one you don't want to listen to with headphones in.

Steampianist & Morbid-Morsel

• From Steampianist and Morbid-Morsel comes Twaddles of a Flue Faker. Sung by Oliver, it gives the POV of a young chimney-sweep from England. Combining a creepy black, white, and red PV with strange, spooky music, the flatness of Oliver's voice and lyrics that are a combination between Tear Jerker and Nightmare Fuel, the overall effect is highly unsettling.
• These two have teamed up again for another round of nightmares in the form of Secrets of Wysteria, based off of the deeds of notorious serial killer and cannibal Albert Fish. Once again, the PV is what makes it truly terrifying, alternating between disturbing black and white imagery of gore and body parts and frantic scribbling over a red backdrop. The eerie slow tempo of the music combined with the creepy music box and Oliver's emotionless vocals really make this one of the more terrifying Engloid songs out there. Incidentally, you know how the song seems to have a strange voice saying nonsense toward the end? It's a backwards message. Give it a listen, if you want. But only if you're able to stomach an excerpt from Albert Fish's letter to Grace Budd's family describing how he killed and ate (But didn't rape) their daughter.
  • The cover by Lizz Robinett is arguably even more creepy, because her voice sounds like a little girl's.
• The Experiment is but another creepy one; based around the 'Russian Sleep Experiment' story, complete with what sounds like rasping breath and rather unnerving lyrics.
• Yet another terrifying masterpiece from them and Momocashew has surfaced for the "Assorted Vocanuts" album: The Perfumer's Perfect Fumes. Oliver assumes the role of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille from Patrick Suskind's "Perfume", singing creepily emotional lyrics that are halfway between "crazy stalker" and "God complex", to a roaring metal track. The images in the PV are fairly benign for the subject matter, however... Until the end. Dear GOD. (WARNING: It's extremely gory. Don't look if you're sensitive to that kind of thing.)
• Have you heard the story of La Llorona? Then this song is an excellent starting point. Oliver & Gumi as creepy children choir and Maika as the titular ghost/monster... Nice company to enjoy! The story has many versions, but the gist of all of them is a woman who lost her children and killed herself... after going mad and killing the kids herself for some reason or another. So now she weeps eternally, looking for her lost children and if she finds a child at night, she kidnaps them, then, weeping, realizes they are not hers and drowns them.
• Halloween Candy (MAJOR DISTURBING CONTENT WARNING.) You were expecting an innocent yet creepy Halloween song? Too bad. The cheerful tone does nothing to mask the fact that it's a song about a child molester looking for new victims. You know a song is gonna be disturbing when its opening lines are "The friendly child molester"!
• The collab between them, "Leech Boy" is a dramatic, unnerving tune about a boy with leeches "dotting on his face" (likely a synonym for indoctrinating bad beliefs), which ends with him BURNING DOWN A CHURCH. And the horrifying reveal of the boy's face near the end doesn't help. Especially when it's shown close up.
  • Pause on the messages that flash by in the middle of the PV; some of them are commonly held beliefs you've likely heard from someone before.
    Climate change isn't real
• "Rust" is his collaboration with Tsus for Project Sonata, and it details a girl (represented by the robot in the video) planning to hurt the person she loves, whether out of desperation or spite. It's still creepy both ways. However it is implied that at the end she lets go of her vengeance and moves on.
• Another song with Oliver, "Thing", is about, well... A "thing". More specifically, it's some kind of shadowy Blob Monster with the mind of a small child that lives alone in the woods and just wants to have friends. It's too bad then that the thing's concept of friendship is absorbing any new "friend" it finds into itself. And if the chorus and the poor rabbits and young man seen on the PV are any indication, the process is not pleasant. The squishing, chewing sounds that can be heard at certain points during the song just help to drive the creepiness home.
  Never leave. Struggling only makes the hugs much tighter...
• "The Botanist". Obsessive "love", kidnapping, mad science and Body Horror combined into one deceitfully cheerful package. The lack of an official PV for the song arguably makes it scarier.

Utata-P

• The lyrics to This is the Happiness and Peace of Mind Committee, by Hatsune Miku. The song starts with Miku wondering why everyone is unhappy, and then suddenly switches to her cheerfully brainwashing the masses with her voice to force them into happiness. Seeing the cheery Slasher Smile on her face as she lists off all the various ways you will be executed if you fail to "be happy" only makes it worse.
  • The English cover is somehow even worse...
  • To say nothing of Len's and Tei's version... This, while being just as scary as either Miku's or Rin's, doesn't explain if Len's controlling Tei, if Tei's controlling Len, or both being lovers...
• By the same person as above, we have Miku's The Path to Eternal Happiness, I found it. It starts out pretty cute with a Bride Miku who tells a story of newly-wed couple on a beach and the bride asking if the groom knows about 'a paradise to the south, the city of hopes where wishes come true'. She then says that she found a way to go there and disappears to find immortality. Then we see another Miku who acts like a host and is most likely the ruler of the place. Bride Miku then has to play 'The Original Sin Game', while she plays we see panels with words flashing by, but you have to pause them at the right time to actually be able to read them. Miku wins and we cut back to the beach and we learn see that the Groom always continued to wait for her at the beach, until his death. She apparently wrote him a letter, but it was never read. Then we go to the game show again and see that the host is surprised that Bride Miku is there again. This time Bride Miku has to play 'The Game of Guilt', which she wins again and as a reward she becomes a zombie.
  • Once again, Tei and Len have their duet cover. However, unlike Miku's version, Tei isn't surprised when Len shows up again...

watashinokoko

• Though it isn't truly Vocaloid-based, the artist watashinokoko creates noise songs using the program LaLaVoice, a technical predecessor to Vocaloid. Many of these songs are incredibly nightmarish. Examples include:
  • Like You. The song starts out very quiet, but then the noise kicks in. And the content of the song and video itself does nothing to take the edge off; the song starts off normally enough (for a noise song,) a flickering image of a girl in the background, and then words appear on the screen, requests (ranging from "fuck me" to "listen [to] me.") And then it changes to "Kill me." Repeated over and over and over again, as the image of the girl in the background flips upside-down and starts to change, her eyes darkening until they're entirely blacked out.
  • Complex. A dark, mysterious, and discordant song with surreal imagery presented in black, red, and white.

Chikuwa-P/Chad

• 'Wakako and Ruriko's Breaking of Toy Blocks'. It can be found here. The entire video is a rainy night scene with two people, one of which looks a bit taller. And then at the end you see the knife in the little girl's hand is 'DRIPPING' with blood.
  • For those of you who want the interactive link: God save you if you choose to press the button after 'Sayonara'- THIS is why it's Nightmare Fuel, for the skeptics, if you will...
  • The sequel, ItaiAtashiAshitaAitai is also pretty creepy. Like above, what makes it Nightmare Fuel is that special little bonus you get when you attempt to pause when the screen wipes out (0:23 and 2:52).
    • The video is at least unsettling when you pause prematurely. She looks right at you if you pause the song outside the aforementioned screen wipes.
    • Even the lyrics do nothing to take the edge off, telling a story of a girl that decides to kill her father for killing her mother, then deciding to kill herself after she realizes that she's become just like him.
  • And on the subject of Chad's fun little videos, if you decide to watch Incoming/Outgoing, whatever you do, don't:
    • Pause for more than 30 seconds.
    • Pause at 0:24.
    • Pause between 2:01 and 2:02.
    • The song itself is also quite unnerving and frantic. And just like ItaiAtashiAshitaAitai, the lyrics are no better. It seems to be about the Japanese urban legend of Mary's phone call.

Ghostie/Marz Mitzi/GHOST

• The COMMUNICATIONS series has its own page here.
• "Project Distortion", in which Maika, Mayu and Gumi perform a rather ambiguous surgical procedure on Yohioloid, ending with him lamenting the loss of humanity. This gets worse if you look up some of the operations they mention (which you don't want to do if you have a weak stomach).
• "Oxidation and Dream Monsters", which was based on the Yume Nikki fangame, .flow, so to those who've played or even heard of the game, you can already tell what to expect.
• "HYPERDONTIA" and its prequel, "NOVOCAINE", tell the story of a malevolent dentist and their traumatized patient. The drilling noises/footsteps before the songs actually start may already freak some viewers out, and the droning repetition of the lyrics don't help. There's also the lovely shot near the end of HYPERDONTIA of Flower's entire lower jaw ripped off, which is recreated in sound form in NOVOCAINE. If you look closely at the dentist at the end of NOVOCAINE, you can see a scar running from the corners of their mouth. This scar is very conspicuous, considering what the dentist does to Flower. It's heavily implied that the dentist experienced the very same thing that Flower does... Even worse, according to Word of God, the patient is based on GHOST themself and the dentist is based on their real-life father.
• Happy Days, which initially looks cute enough with a girl in Inkblot Cartoon Style on a stage with a polka-dot background. Then it becomes a song about being an Insecure Love Interest who irrationally fears that their lover secretly hates them and wants them to die. The only Splash of Color present is at the end, where the cartoon girl has her face scratched out and has cut her own heart out with a knife. Brr... Word of God says the song is about borderline personality disorder and the effects it can have on relationships.
• Appetite of A People-Pleaser is also pretty creepy, from Flower’s Nightmare Face at the beginning, to the disturbing lyrics that seem to imply the singer has anxiety at best, and an outright eating disorder at worst.
  And now that I’ve become the perfect identity

  ‘Cus I dunno who I’m supposed to be anymore
  And I’m starving
  I’ll purge ‘em all, the thoughts of anyone I’ll ever meet

  • From a closer analysis of the lyrics, the singer's eating disorder and the various flavors quickly turn into symbolic metaphors for Borderline Personality Disorder, with the singer desperately walking on eggshells and taking on various personas ("Whether I've been caramelized/or rotten to the core/Which one should I be?") to get approval. The song gets even more disturbing when one thinks about it long enough.

  • After the song ends, the "thank you for watching" screen is accompanied by a distorted, low-pitched piano instrumental with the slice of cake from the beginning of the video in the trash...interpret that as you will.
• The Distortionist is fairly disturbing with it’s portrayal of the titular character. The song follows the story of Christopher Pierre, (often shortened to Chris P. for reasons that will be explained shortly) a man who manipulates mirrors to make himself look like a better person. When a mirror doesn’t comply, he shatters it with a twisted metal bat. Eventually, the mirrors work together to reflect bright lights onto Chris, burning all of his skin off and revealing the true monster underneath. It’s not a pretty sight.
  • One other fun little detail: When the spotlight shines down onto Chris, it is revealed that his spine is twisted all the way around. How lovely.
  • If one listens closely, they can hear that the song is a metaphor for how abusers often twist their victim’s thoughts to continue abusing them.

MARETU

• Coin Locker Baby, a song that refers to the practice in Japan of abandoning unwanted babies in public coin-operated lockers, hoping that they'll be found quickly because attendants check the lockers regularly (or at least they're supposed to), but more often the babies suffocate or starve to death before being discovered. The subject matter is quite dark and the video includes some unnerving symbolism such as a teru teru bozu^note a tissue paper doll that is a common childhood craft in Japan getting its head ripped off and a stick-figure woman next to a rapidly shuffling image of a stick-figure man with a "?" next to it, but it's the ending that turns the song into pure Nightmare Fuel. People have theorized that the sounds are from the vengeful spirit of the baby trying to get out of the locker.
  • It might actually be worse than that. Here's the version with the uncut ending. What is the last thing we see in the PV before it cuts to black? The child about to push his (pregnant) mother down the tracks of an upcoming train. Now listen to that ending again: Doesn't it sounds a whole lot more like flesh and bones? ...Yuck.
  • If you look really closely during that final scene you will notice there appears to be something invisible moving across the screen, and if you pause at about 4:23 right before the video ends, you will notice a pair of eyes are staring at you.
• Eraser Girl. The song seemingly speaks of two girls who have fallen in love and are paying for it due to the standards of the world. So they pretend they aren't in love until their secret is found out and they are rejected by society. The ending to this song is rather abrupt, which isn't nightmare fuel on its own, until you think about the last lyric of the song talking about the view of the upside down scenery...
• Scrumize. The lyrics to this song are quite unsettling (common interpretation being that Scrumize is told from the abused person in an abusive relationship), however it's once again the ending of the song that really makes this nightmare fuel. The song ends with a piano playing a simple melody which becomes heavily distorted and jarring as it plays it again and again.
• Then there's Suji, a response song to Scrumize, told from the abuser's point of view in an abusive relationship. The song's lyrics are extremely disturbing, the narrator of the song wanting to do... Unspeakable things to the corpse of the character from Scrumize (who seems to have been murdered by said narrator). It doesn't help that the song seems to imply that the nature of the relationship between the Suji and Scrumize characters is pedophilic.
• The Taste of Cockroach. What starts out as a pretty saccharinely-cheerful number descends further into a horrifying song about bullying, with the video displaying questions asking the viewer to answer yes or no to what increasingly torturous bullying tactics they've experienced (up to being forced to eat cockroaches). The icing on the cake is the ending, where the music can make you only wonder what hell the bullies are putting their victim through...
• Aishiteita no ni, a song from the POV of a Yandere planning to murder their lover over a "betrayal". The song's atmosphere is very disturbing from the get-go, containing heavy breathing sound effects, an odd squelching noise during the chorus that sounds like something being stabbed or squashed, and organ instruments that sound like they're playing a distorted version of "Here Comes the Bride". Eesh.

Eyeris/Creep-P^note formerly known as Krypt Creeper

• "Creativity" sung by Avanna and Kaito, a Villain Song for Sketchbook and Tony the Talking Clock from Don't Hug Me I'm Scared. It summarizes them both perfectly and horrifyingly.

  • The same producer made another DHMIS-inspired song called "Ai" (Love). The description says that it's about an abusive relationship, from the abuser's point-of-view. Also, don't let the video fool you at first. While the little Shrignolds (butterflies) floating up and down the picture look cute, Chika's eventual Slasher Smile certainly isn't.
    • For those who are curious about what the song says, the producer has released an English version with Cyber Diva singing it. The lyrics... aren't pleasant, to say the least.

  • Now there's a third and presumably final installment called "Father", based on the sixth and final installment of DHMIS. It illustrates Roy's abuse of Yellow Guy very well...

    Yellow Guy: No I won't.
    • One of the lyrics is "Mother knew best but Father took her place..." which begs the question: What did Roy do to Yellow Guy's mother?
    • When Yellow Guy sings "Father knows best, father knows best," his face turns into a crayon drawn Nightmare Face and the background starts spazzing out into a mess of colors. That's the last face he makes before the TV fades to black.
• One of the producer's lesser known works, "Regular", is based on a short that would later spawn Regular Show. The video starts off in an innocent-looking landscape. As chibified, humanised versions of Mordecai and Rigby travel through the landscape, it slowly turns from mundane to utterly horrifying. What's more, the lyrics, while not quite as horrifying as in Creeper-P's other works, imply that the singer (most likely Mordecai) is utterly terrified of the life he lives in his acid trip.
• And then there's "MOMMY", a song based on a My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Creepypasta called Lil Miss Rarity. Even if you know nothing about the pasta, the blinking eyes in the PV, as well as the vague lyrics, can still send chills down your spine.
• They now have "Static Screens", a song about Candle Cove. Yes, THAT Candle Cove...
• "Tightrope", sung by Cyber Songman, ends with a Jump Scare followed by eerie droning music... the Jump Scare in question? Songman's character falling to his death.
  "But my eye's in the sky, so if I fall I know that it's my-SPLAT!
• "Exorcism" is sung from the perspective of a woman experiencing Demonic Possession. The lyrics alternate between desperately pleading for an exorcism, downplaying her pain and saying she doesn't need any help, and cursing out her demon. The images show a girl either normal-looking or making Reagan MacNeil-inspired facial expressions. The real kicker, though, is that upon closer examination of the lyrics, as well as checking the description, makes it clear it's actually a metaphor for someone in an abusive relationship. The song ends on a Fade Out mid-way through the chorus, implying the woman never escaped her demon/abuser, her cries for help left unheard.

Daijoubu-P

• Jisatsu Shoujo, whose title translates to "Suicide Girl". It's intentionally discordant, and you can practically hear how fragile Miku's mental state must be. The PV isn't much better, depicting a skinless Miku whose face appears to be frozen in a scream of agony.
  • There is now a translation of the above song, and it's everything you'd expect and more— although some fans in the comment sections have theorized that it might actually be a joke song, parodying other, more serious Vocaloid metal and noise songs with dark subject matter such as suicide and bullying. Either way, it's still terrifying.
• The Face. Let's just say, if the flashing colors and horrific music don't make you scared, Miku's stare and the fact that she's holding a knife definitely will. And the creepy Masked figure, no longer in cartoonish style, but real life.
• rei ken ren ga dai hae un i ren wo ui is fairly unsettling too, especially some of the lyrics...

• What Can We Do (NSFW and epilepsy warning) is pretty much Mind Screw in its purest, unadulterated form, featuring Miku apparently consuming copious amounts of drugs while touching herself... and then it just gets weirder, with Miku's skin covered in crawling maggots, two Mikus stabbing each other in the head with syringes (in 3D), Miku's head twitching violently, and Miku chasing down apparently sentient drugs through a field of weed with copious eyes.

Kamiyanagi/Zawazawa-P

• Confinement, Training, Beef Stew, in which Miku, feeling neglected by her master who never gives her songs to sing, ties him up and forces him to write something for her. In the end, she stabs him and cooks him into a meat stew. The Japanese text at the very end doesn't help:

• Scissorloid is about Miku feeling jealous of the attention Luka is getting from Master and how she plans to kill her. When she tries to cut Luka's cables, Miku hesitates as she remembers the time they spent together and starts crying. A cheerful Luka then wakes up and tells Miku how glad she is to have Miku as her sister, even saying she's the number one diva in the world...only to add "just kidding" and stab Miku with a knife. The end of the song shows Luka giving a killer Slasher Smile as she declares that now she can have Master all to herself.
• Circle You, Circle You. Children dismembering each other for all of eternity.
  • Even moreso, the Creepypasta based on it is even more terrifying, with scientists performing horrible experiments on them (see the creepypasta Nightmare Fuel page for details)
  • Rockleetist's dub makes it even scarier, especially the last verse:

  • The ending of the video. It shows Miku holding a bloody knife with a blank face. After a pause, Miku gives a crazed grin before she swings at the screen and the video ends.
  • Listening to the song with headphones is really creepy too; Miku's voice comes out of one side and Luka's comes out of another. When they sing together, it actually sounds as though you're being surrounded.

Miscellaneous

• "A 13-Year-Old Killer," by Kagamine Rin. The subject matter is upsetting enough, but the dark, creepy sound of the song and the male narrator that you can barely make out over the music barely helps. And the final spoken line of the song is chilling, once you put it all together...
• This. It's a 30 second video of Miku repeatedly stabbing... someone. The amount of blood around and the sound that the stabbing makes both imply that she's been at this for a while, and she doesn't seem to be interested in stopping. Upon watching the making-of, it's revealed that the person that she's stabbing is Kaito. "Love is War" playing softly in the background does not help.
• Tympole (Otamaru)'s face in the Pokémon Isshu Rap. For added fun, parts of the song were produced by Daijoubu-P and Utsu-P, mentioned above, and they stick to their usual styles.
• Abre los Ojos ("Open Your Eyes"), in which Miku plays the role of a girl who, after being rejected by the man she loves, decides to make sure that his heart is hers... literally.
• KAITO ga UNINSTALL: Kaito goes Yandere and kills the other Vocaloids so he can be his master's center of attention and affection.
• Fear Garden, in which Rin sings about cutting the other Vocaloids' arms off and planting them like flowers in her garden.
• The Purple Forest sung by Miku and Kaito. The creepiest thing about this song is that there is no ominous notes, it sounds sweet and pretty and lovely the whole way. The only way you know it is creepy is if you watch the video, and after that, the simple fact of such a pleasant sounding song with an ominous backstory is chilling. The story is about a forest that no one likes to enter. A traveler (Kaito) wanders in and meets a pretty young girl (Miku). She turns out to be a dryad who lures people to her, and absorbs them into her tree for sustenance. She does this to Kaito while he sleeps, while the whole time Kaito believes he's being taken to a paradise. And then at the very end of the vid, Miku looks right at you with the beginnings of a Slasher Smile.
• We Were Friends Until Yesterday by Ie no Ura de Manbou ga Shinderu-P is a deceptively cute song about a girl (Miku) who becomes friends with a weird sunfish... thing. Takes a turn for the worse when their food runs low and her "friend" starts to look more like food...
• Prisoner and Paper Airplane ride on the anxiety caused by being permanently separated from a loved one. Except in this case, one part of the couple (Rin) is terminally ill, and the other part of the couple (Len) is in a prison—no, a concentration camp. One with backdrops derived from Auschwitz. We first, in "Prisoner", witness Len being put to death in a gas chamber. Then in "Paper Airplane", we see Rin being put on gradually more life support, until she ultimately passes away.
• The most well-known fanmade PV of the song Trick and Treat is about Miku being lured into a house in the woods by Rin and Len, and being drugged with candy to make her fall asleep. She wakes up sooner than they anticipated and suddenly remembers where she knows the pair from. They're her old dolls, which she abandoned after getting a new one. Once Rin and Len realize that she's awake, things get worse in a hurry. The twins want Miku's heart... and succeed in getting it.
• The Riddle Solver Who Can't Solve Riddles is more than a little disconcerting, as it starts out with Len interrogating his fellow detective, who apparently has murdered all the guests... but by the end of the video it's fairly obvious Len is the one who killed them all and he's about to do the same to her.
  • Followed by The Riddle Solver Who Won't Solve Riddles, in which Rin insists that Len didn't kill them. She piles on riddle after riddle, promising to trap whoever can solve the mystery in the world of their story.
• Twilight Homicide Song. Meiko can be pretty scary too. And that mask.
• SF-A2 Miki singing the Lavender Town theme, from Pokemon, a song frequently used or at least referenced in the horror stories of the Pokemon fandom.
  • Speaking of Lavender Town, the song Lavender Tone (sung by Yohioloid) goes more in-depth with the horror, referencing other Pokepastas like Ghost and Buried Alive. First-time viewers may miss the subtle Madness Makeover that he's going through as a result of playing the game, shown by his hair becoming more unkempt and bags forming under his eyes. The video ends with a picture of an open window, implying that he committed suicide.
• "50/50," a Miku song about a girl who is jealous of her best friend Mari-chan's new boyfriend... so she cuts him in half so that they can share. "Mari-chan and I go halfsies on everything."

  Is it because I'm stained all red?
• Despite its awesome tune, Kagerou (translation: Heat Haze) Days can be a bit scary to watch, especially the PV Version. The song is essentially about a "Groundhog Day" Loop wherein a boy is forced to watch his friend die in increasingly horrible ways, no matter how much he tries to prevent it. In order to break the loop once and for all, he goes back to the first death (the girl gets smashed by a speeding truck) and sacrifices himself so the girl could live. And just when you think that all is said and done, the ending of the song shows the girl seemingly going through the same loop, only with the boy dying instead.
• Here is You Are Mine, a Yandere Luka song.
  "I'll die...I'll die! just to get away from you!"
  Aw, why? Don't die!
  You know I will still own you!
• Black and White Ward (also known as Monochrome Ward) is the story of science gone horribly wrong. It flies by so fast that you may not realize that Rin has swapped clothes/appearance with Len at the end. It ends with Rin dead, Rin's assertion that Len is still a nobody, and the words Congratulations "Rin".
• Love Disease featuring Luka. Starts off as a peppy swing song about going on a date, until we learn that Luka was just daydreaming about the whole thing. Then she catches her love interest going out with another woman, which prompts her to Murder the Hypotenuse so she can have him all to herself, and at the same time that eyes-out-of-frame shot that's remained still the whole time zooms out to reveal a Slasher Smile with Ax-Crazy eyes. She stalks him and tries repeatedly to get in contact with him (and it's implied he's trying to get away from her). "If I Can't Have You…" goes into full effect by the end of the song; it's implied she either kills him or rapes him.
• Wonder Girl & Labyrinth Gate is the tale of Hansel and Gretel, and how they defeat the evil witch! Except that Hansel is a doll, the candy house is run-down shed, and the wicked witch isn't a witch at all. (Note: turn on CC to view English subs)
• A Fox Wedding (not to be confused with the equally terrifying The Fox's Wedding) starts out as a typical Tear Jerker song… and then...
• From JUSF Zhou Cun, a Luo Tianyi/Yan He song: Puppet Master: Finest Creation. It sounds jazzy and all, but... the PV begins with a disclaimer of sorts: Yandere, check. Representation of blood, check. Body parts cut to pieces, check. It's about a man trying to create the perfect doll from human parts and constantly being unsatisfied and hacking it up again. Said 'doll' is implied to still be alive.
• Warmachine tells AM's point of view and hate of humanity, while sadistically mocking them for not realizing what a threat he was until it was too late. The video ends with a human version of AM in the middle of a burning room with a crazy smile on his face as he cries out his genocidal intentions against humanity while planing to torture 5 survivors for eternity.

• This alternate music video for Kaito's cover of Donut Hole starts out as a simple Tear Jerker and then the second verse happens. And then things get even worse. Much worse.
• "Rotten Rotten Zombie" has a PV that has Gumi and Cul as cute zombies and other cute monsters, that were, respectively, the wife and lover of a man who kills them both. Then they return from the grave and they "split" him between each other.
• Cantarella is a difficult song to interpret, but some of the lyrics have very disturbing implications. It seems that many fans have caught on to Kaito's rapist vibes, as quite a few fanmade videos include him drugging and restraining Miku in an attempt to get her into bed. Debating whether Miku waking up while he hesitates and her showing willingness makes it better or not is best done elsewhere.
  I now set up a trap to capture your captivated heart.

  • Some fanmade videos also include a character played by Len, who is supposed to be an acquaintance or friend of Miku's, only to be killed by Kaito.
• Escape the Princess is about a princess (Miku) in a loveless marriage with an emperor and is secretly in love with the emperor's sister. When the sister marries and moves away, the princess falls into despair, starts seeing one of her ladies-in-waiting (Gumi) as the sister's lookalike, and then violates her, causing the lady-in-waiting to attempt to flee. The song itself is incredibly frantic and fast-paced with intense piano chords, making the listener feel the desperation of the lady-in-waiting as she attempts to escape. In the end, the princess catches her and it is implied that the lady-in-waiting becomes the princess' sex slave.
• Teratoma is Gumi at her absolute most terrifying. Teratoma is a tumor made of embrionary tissue.
• MOL-P's "Pilom-San" (or "Mr. Pilom") is pretty much "Nothing Is Scarier" in song form. There are no lyrics besides Miku yelling "Pilom-san!" and occasionally a droning/fluctuating "ahhhh..." and the only image is the titular character standing there and occasionally looking at Miku when she says his name. The clincher? Nothing in the PV or song ever even comes close to explaining who or what "Pilom-san" is. He doesn't even kill anything or lunge at the audience, he just...stands there, Slender Man style and stares off into space with the single most unnerving smile one could ever have.
  • Just when you think the video only loops between him looking away and to the screen, at a certain point Miku calls him and, instead of the usual Aside Glance, he gazes directly into the screen. The change is so sudden, and while it isn't really a Jump Scare, that gaze (which lasts for 5 seconds, by the way) will give the feeling that The Fourth Wall Will NOT Protect You.
• Chanagi-P's Onii Yuukai at first seems like a really weird story about how Kaito's three sisters (Luka, Miku and Rin) want him as their boyfriend. They all seem to give up and satisfy themselves with fantasizing about it instead since he obviously doesn't feel the same. But then they dare to finally enter his room and you only hear him scream. Everybody wonders where he has disappeared to by the end of the song while the sisters all disappear into his room...
• SeeU's Hide and Seek is about a young boy hiding in terror from his sister while the sister has fun singing about how they're playing Hide and Seek and how she can hear his running footsteps and see his hair peeking out. He finally hides underneath the table of his room, but she finds him with a Slasher Smile, claiming that now he is 'It'. He kills her and when he turns around, he has the black eyes of his sister and stares right at you.
• VocaLight's cover of "Dancer in the Dark" that features multiple singers... and also adds in samples of what sounds like street warfare and screams in between verses.
• Limelight has a very disturbing presentation.
• "Splatter Party" by Camelia is about Miku committing mass murder with a chainsaw.
• "Collection" is a song about Oliver starting a collection of the things he finds beautiful. He starts by ripping out the wings of a butterfly, then he notices that the eyes of the poor maid watching over him are beautiful too... Did we mention that by "collecting" something he actually means keeping one of two things in a jar and eating the other?
• "Bitter Choco Decoration" by syudou is rather unclear as to what exactly is going on in the PV, but the images of a young boy in what appears to be a prison jumpsuit being served god knows what by a serving woman with a cloth over her face are certainly enough to make a viewer rather paranoid.
  I do my best not to hurt anyone, not to bully anyone, and not to kill anyone.
  • Meanwhile, lyrically, the song seems to be about someone who is forced to abandon their personal identity all for the sake of doing what society expects of them, which is scary enough on its own.

• "Pyrite Girl" by RIP is subtle, but chilling. It initially starts off as a rather morose song about a girl who's being abused by someone...and then she gets it into her head that this is a good thing and she's better now like this. At the end of the song, she has golden cracks on her face, and...well, the lyrics speak for themselves:

  • Another song by the same producer, "The Medical Anomaly", is pure Medical Horror. It portrays Oliver as Delicate and Sickly, having come down with...something that none of the doctors can figure out and that seems untreatable. The condition gets worse as the song progresses, to the point where it starts feeling less like any existing disease and more like something otherworldly. Needless to say, it's a very creepy song.
• Mushi-P's Color & Electricity sounds upbeat and happy, but the lyrics, not so much. The song is about a monster that collects a whole variety of colors, except yellow. To find this color, the monster finds a child wearing a yellow raincoat, and murders and eats them, hoping to become yellow... but instead, the monster becomes red—the color of blood. Not only is the concept creepy, some of the art and the lyrics are creepy as well.

• Mondaiji-P's potatoman is a very creepy song by Kaai Yuki, with a lot of dial-up tones and disturbing ambient noises.
• These three videos by SEIKAI. Who knew the default MMD models could be so terrifying?
  • Our Anniversary starts off with a cheery tune full of Lyrical Dissonance as both the lyrics and the video shows Miku brutally torturing and killing Len, all because he supposedly bullied her. And that's just the first three minutes!
  It's your fault it's your fault it's your fault it's your fault it's your fault it's your fault
  • My Birthday starts off more sombre than scary, with a depressed Miku singing about death as she walks through an empty school building. Her singing gradually starts to sound out of tune as Miku makes her way to the rooftop, and then she jumps. The video takes a disturbing turn after that, with Rin and Len supposedly torturing Miku in hell. Not to mention the wailing they make.
  • The creepy segment shows a dark background with miku standing still with her head down. However, a camera will zoom in and creepypasta hatsune miku pops up with the same scream from scary freakin’ pop up at the camera before it cuts to Black and lomando Kaidan shojo plays. here’s an video wanna see?
  • My Death Day begins with another happy tune as Miku sings about death, self harm and suicide. And also her birthday. The accompanying image is of Miku sitting on the floor of a dark room hiding her face in her knees, with a slice of cake in front of her that has knives, needles and box cutters stabbed into it. The song and the image glitch a few times before cutting to a distorted image of Miku while a droning noise plays with Miku laughing and saying "Die". What follows are some very disturbing images of Miku (with one of them looking like she's vomiting blood!).
• SHIRIKANIBARILUNA (Or Serial Cannibal Lunatic) by Joruzin. Another song about the infamous serial killer Albert Fish. From his perspective. The Deranged Animation doesn't help.
  • Iron Maiden and the Dreamy Princess also by Joruzin, is a fast paced song about Elizabeth Bathory's reign of terror.
• The Tragedy of Chateau Cepage is a Yandere song where Gakupo kidnaps and tries to dismember Rin. The PV is even worse because she looks as young as usual and he looks a hell of a lot older than her. And the rape undertones do not help.
• Alien, a harsh noise song seemingly about aliens using humanity to breed.
• Perfectly Sweet tells the story of a woman named Sarai. The song starts off cutesy and innocent, until we see a shot of Sarai burning alive. This changes the trajectory of the entire story, ending on a POV shot of someone being shoved into an oven.
• Wakacha's True Love Restraint is definitely one of the creeper Yandere songs out there, largely thanks to how grounded and visceral it is - there's no gratuitous gore or jumpscares, just Len repeatedly asking Rin if he loves her and systematically murdering everybody she cares about while fantasising about removing her lips and eyes so she can't show affection to anyone but him. Then, when she understandably rejects him, we get a shot of him looking at his bruised hand with a blank expression before he charges at her like a zombie, tackles her to the ground and starts strangling her with a manic smirk on his face.
• Anonymous M is creepy and cerebral in a way you wouldn't expect from a Vocaloid song. It's structured as an interview between a man and the titular "Anonymous M", who pours her heart out to him about her insecurities, the pressures of being a diva, and her gratitude to everyone for letting her sing...only to bluntly admit halfway through the song that she's just being made to say these things by others. It's a striking, almost existential deconstruction of Miku's nature as an "instrument with a face", and the way she's depicted in the song only makes it more uncomfortable - she has the ability to speak and move, but only to parrot the thoughts and words of others, and she's fully aware of it...or at least, that's what the person currently putting words in her mouth wants you to think.
• Vega-P's DISAPPEARANCE FESTIVAL is a deliberate attempt to evoke the feeling of songs like "Kagome Kagome" and "Alice of Human Sacrifice", and it succeeds to chilling effect. The premise is simple: the singer is at a festival, where she and others must perform a folk dance to ward off evil spirits, with one catch - anyone who stops dancing will be taken by the spirits. The singer is the sole survivor at the end, everyone else having succumbed to exhaustion and been devoured by the spirits (with quick flashes of Teto and Len's dismembered corpses suggesting that the spirits didn't make it quick)...but the festival doesn't end, with the poor singer having to dance and play until her hands and feet bleed while both the spirits and the ghosts of the deceased festival-goers look on.
• Hashakusama by Unknown is about the titular Hachishaku-sama, or "Ms Eight-Feet-Tall", a Youkai said to hunt children.
