Fanfic / Super Mario Galaxy Rebirth Saga

Go To

The Super Mario Galaxy Rebirth Saga is an ongoing fanfic series made by mariobroultimate, and is a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine: A Sprite of Light. It is a extended adaptation of the Super Mario Galaxy duology starring new and returning characters. Currently, only the first story, Super Mario Galaxy Part 1: The Dark Mysteries of the Cosmos, an adaptation of the first game is out and still ongoing. It can be found here.

A one shot celebrating Mar10 day is also listed as part of the saga and can be found here.

Other stories planned for the saga include The Darkness of Space, a Prequel to the series, a currently unnamed second part which will be an adaptation of the second game, and three unnamed stories simply labeled as "TBA".

The Dark Mysteries of the Cosmos contains examples of:

  • A Birthday, Not a Break: It happens to be Alex's birthday when Bowser attacks the Mushroom Kingdom and steals the castle.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Subverted. Peach tries to lock Bowser away in the "Endless" Staircase just as he did her to "see how [he] like[s] it", only for him to break out of it within a few seconds.
  • The Ace: Aster. He knows just about every Galaxy in the universe except for the ones recently created.
  • Adaptational Context Change: In the original, Rosalina explained that a strange force latched onto their ship, pulling away Power Stars. Here, Bowser approached Rosalina personally and sucked them out of a beacon using a tube.
  • Adaptational Sympathy: Bowser, who is known in the games to be a purely evil tyrant, whose malice was born simply from bad parenting by Kamek, is instead portrayed as a Tragic Villain born into a bloodline of royalty in an ongoing rivalry with the Mushroom Kingdom. He once tried to end the tension by asking some Toads to play with him, only for them to bully him, then got lectured by his Abusive Dad on how conquest is the only way to get things done.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The fanfic expands on many elements of the game, and adds brand new elements as well.
    • The intro shows how Bowser got his immense power with him stealing the power stars from the Comet Observatory. It also mentions that he got the UFO from the Topman Tribe, indicating an alliance with them.
    • Alex and Leah are along for the ride, complete with their own side stories. Luigi has gained a story of his own as well. In addition, Bowser and Peach have scenes within the renovated castle in a similar vein to Paper Mario.
    • Aster mentioned his past with Rosalina akin to the storybook from the game and reveals details about their lives before going into space, including the history on how the Star Festival was first founded.
    • Certain bosses now have backstories and dialogue as opposed to their general lack of character before. Topmaniac and Bouldergeist are the most notable ones.
    • A book Aster reads introduces lore behind The Trial Galaxies, stating that they were created by an ancient deity who ruled the universe long ago and were meant to put warriors to the test to see who was worthy in fighting for the universe alongside her. However, many warriors have fallen, and she sealed the doorway shut. She then sent three Green Lumas to transform into Green Stars and spread themselves across the universe, hoping that only one who was worthy could find them.
  • Adaptation Name Change: The type of ice flower that debuted New Super Mario Bros. Wii is referred to as the freeze flower. This is likely to avoid confusion between Galaxy's version of the ice flower.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade:
    • Mario in spades! Mostly because in the original, he didn't have much emotion or personality and was merely going along with the ride. Here, he is distraught with everything that transpired at the Star Festival and struggles with getting used to traveling in outer space. At least until he meets Aster.
    • Alex normally doesn't do much angst after he survived cancer in his original creator's stories. But getting turned into a cybernetic machine here has taken a toll on his mental health, in which he'll take awhile to recover. Even so, he might not recover completely.
    • Serving as a Deconstruction of Peach's Designated Victim status, the amount of times she's been kidnapped by Bowser and other villains has taken a toll on her own sanity and self esteem, to the point where she had a nightmare about her own sister, and entire kingdom berating her for her own cowardice and lack of self defense. Contrast this with Peach's canon counterpart, who remains as happy and bubbly as ever despite the constant captures.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • In the original game, Luigi didn't show up until Mario rescued him in Ghostly Galaxy with only a brief mention by the Toad Brigade prior. Here, Peach runs into Luigi playing cards with Toad at her castle, somehow unaware that it was lifted into the air.
    • Bowser Jr. doesn't first appear in the game until right before the boss with Megaleg. The fanfic has him debut alongside his father in the very first chapter.
  • Adaptational Explanation:
    • Bowser got the huge UFO that lifted Peach's Castle from the Topman Tribe. Makes sense given its similar design to the saucers in Battlerock and Dreadnought.
    • The Grand Star in Gateway Galaxy was being used to make... frosting for Bowser's galaxy-sized cake.
  • Adapted Out: Bowser mentions getting 90 stars rather than 121, indicating that certain stars will be cut. So far, not a single Prankster Comet has been covered.
  • All Atmospheres Are Equal: Toad mentions that unlike the real world, anyone can breathe in space in the Mario universe, which gives Peach and the others hope that Mario could still be alive.
  • All Gravity Is the Same: Despite traveling on lots of Baby Planets, gravity is the same on those planets as it is in the Mushroom World, which is more equivalent to the size of a real life planet. The only aversion to this is in Chapter 15, where Topmaniac increases the gravity on the saucer in which Alex is captive in order to hold him still and brainwash him.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Like in the original, Bowser lifts Peach's Castle out of the ground, lifts it into space and takes total control of it with the intent of it being part of his new galaxy.
  • The Aloner: Aster starts out as this, remaining secluded in a house on the starting planet of Good Egg Galaxy, having a sign on his door telling people to stay out and lying about not being home, and being rude to Mario when he enters the house through a pipe. Though after following Mario to the next star, he grows out of this and apologizes.
  • Any Last Words?: Subverted with Alpha Pandora, who was about to kill Mario and asked him this, only to deny him a few seconds later stating he's "said enough nonsense in [his] life as is."
  • Arc Villain: Alpha Pandora is one for the Fountain, as he's behind the Rolling Greens Galaxy, the airship fleet in Space Junk, Jeff's capture in Tarantox's Web, the temporary dragon to Topmaniac, and even helped with construction on Bowser's Star Reactor.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Kamek only showed up in the intro of the game to blast Mario away, and then is never seen again. Here, he remains by Bowser's side, sending Luigi and the others away, offering Bowser advice, and summoning his cousin Kamella to serve as a boss for the airship fleet in Space Junk Galaxy.
    • Topmaniac, once merely a boss within two galaxies (and one of the easiest ones at that) is now serving as one of Bowser's Co-Dragons alongside Kamek. If what Bowser mentioned is any indication, he's responsible for Bowser's immense increase in power, he brainwashed Alex and turned him into a superpowered robot, and is implied to have a past with Aster.
    • Leah was originally a minor character in nintendoscript15's stories. Now, she's entered the Mushroom World for the first time and appears to be set to have a character arc and become a fully fledged member of the group.
  • Baby Planet: If the planets Mario and Co. traveled on existed in real life, they'd be big enough to be asteroids at best.
  • Big Bad: After having previously been kicked upstairs to simply being an evil force in the background, Bowser is back to his status as the main threat and is bigger and badder than ever.
  • Big Good: Just as in the original game, Rosalina runs the Comet Observatory and helps Mario and Co. by informing them on their progress, giving them advice, and acting as the Team Mom of the group.
  • Big Sister Bully:
    • Bootrix's older sisters are petty narcissists who call her ugly and force her into torturing their victims, while threatening to torture her. Luigi is horribly disgusted by their behavior and sympathizes with Bootrix.
    • Inverted during a nightmare Peach has, in which her younger sister Aqua berates her for her constant kidnappings and lack of self defense, and goes as far to punch her in the nose. The entire Mushroom Kingdom joins in.
  • Breather Episode: Chapter 25: "A Little Break" doesn't involve the group going after stars at all. Instead, the focus is on getting Alex's mind off of his time as Alpha Pandora and showing the Lumas playing and having fun with him.
  • Co-Dragons: Kamek and Topmaniac. Kamek is assisting Bowser by sending away intruders and offering him advice, while Topmaniac assists Bowser with the space involved plans, like lifting the castle and constructing bases. Bowser even puts the latter in charge temporarily.
  • Composite Character:
    • In canon, Toad and Captain Toad are confirmed to be two separate characters despite never being seen together. In this story, they are one and the same.
    • Aster seems to be a mix of Aqua's tragedy and friendship with Mario, Daisy's agressive and bossy Tsundere attitude, and the second player who'd control a second pointer in the original game.
  • Connected All Along: Bowser actually met Aster before Mario. After he murdered Princess Peach's parents as shown in the last story, Aster confronted him and aimed to give him justice by destroying his airships and killing his minions, despite Bowser trying to reason with him. Bowser ended up concealing his deeper emotions from the general public ever since, making him the Large Ham Small Name, Big Ego he is now.
  • Console Cameo: The Wii made a cameo during the battle with Alpha Pandora, where an alien is using one to control said cyborg and Aster fights it for control, while also figuring out how to use it.
  • The Cynic: Aster. While he's dead set on saving the universe, he lacks confidence in saving the smaller things that might be "beyond help" like Alex's condition after being AP. He also believes that deep down, everyone is selfish and some people have no light in them. Might be justified given his past. Later on it seems to be subverted, as he appears to have dreams and aspirations that he hopes to accomplish by opening up the doorway to the Trial Galaxies. But it's a side to him that he seems to keep secret from everyone else not knowing that Mario was eavesdropping.
  • Darker and Edgier: When compared to its predecessor, the dark and traumatic parts take the forefront rather than simply being brought up in flashbacks a few times.
    • Also this to this original game, which already was darker than most other Mario games. Just invoke more Cerebus Syndrome through a newly introduced character, have one of Mario's closest friends go through Unwilling Roboticization, give boss characters more depth, and go in-depth on Mario's struggles in space, and you've got a recipe for true grimness.
  • Death by Adaptation: Bowser casually reveals to Peach that he executed Mr. Hammer for treason after finding out he gave Peach the Sneaky Parasol.
  • Demoted to Dragon: Inverted on the good side. Mario, previously the Big Good of Super Mario Sunshine: A Sprite of Light, is now The Hero with Rosalina being the new Big Good.
  • Demoted to Extra: Previously the main character of the last story, Aqua has been relegated to mere mentions, cameos, and flashbacks. Though she does make an appearance in a nightmare of Peach's.
  • Destination Defenestration: Aster crashes through a window into Battlerock's control unit and then throws an alien controlling AP out another one.
  • Distress Call: Chapter 23 reveals that Grand Stars are capable of doing this, with it sending their equivalent of an SOS signal in the form of "twinkles" to Aster.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After all the kidnappings, abuse, and punishments, Peach had enough and proceeded to beat up Bowser, and attempted to lock him up in the 'Endless' Staircase.
  • Eldritch Location: Aster sees a black hole as this, as they take all the previously established laws of space-time and completely throw them out the window, like a calculator trying to divide by 0.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: Peach did not appreciate Bowser's joke on him liking his steak rare (a steak that isn't cooked much, resulting in the animal's blood often coming out of the meat).
  • Evil Learns of Outside Context: When Bowser learns from Topmaniac that Alex is from a different dimension (aka the real world), he is intrigued and considers looking into it after he's finished conquering his universe.
  • Face–Monster Turn: This happened to Rocky J. Koops, who became Bouldergeist after Bootrix's sisters spiked his drink with a forbidden potion.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Exaggerated. Luigi and Toad somehow didn't notice that Peach's Castle was lifted into outer space, even though they should've felt an earthquake from the inside, heard screaming, airships, and anchors outside, and the power went out. They were just really focused on that card game.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Aster is not familiar with modern sources of entertainment due to just how long he's spent apart from the Mushroom World.
  • Forced into Evil: The case with Bootrix, as she's being forced by her sisters to help them torture the victims Bouldergeist sends their way.
  • Foreshadowing: When Luigi meets the three boo sisters, Bootrix is the only one who doesn't tease him and acts like she's in love with him. Her suggestion for his "torture" is also the least cruel out of the three. Fast forward to the next Luigi segment and it turns out Bootrix is only pretending to be evil to save herself, and hates what she's been forced into.
  • Galactic Conqueror: As in the original game, Bowser plans to conquer the entire universe, even boasting himself as "future Emperor of the Universe". It's also implied in Chapter 15 that he's considering conquering Alex's universe after he's finished with his own.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: When Mario drools at the sight of the Sweet Sweet Galaxy, Aster slaps him and tells him to pull himself together.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Bowser had Peach trapped in the "Endless" Staircase for 11 hours. This was enough for Peach to snap when he finally let her out and even tried to give him A Taste Of His Own Medicine, only to fail and run away crying.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: The Luma Goddess, Yami, who created the Trial Galaxies to see which warrior was worthy of defending the universe. Aster wishes to reopen the doorway to these trials and conquer them himself.
  • Greater-Scope Villain:
    • Bowser's ancestors all previously attacked the Mushroom Kingdom in similar manners to how he does today. Of special note is his father, who allowed a group of Toads to bully him just to hammer in the lesson that he can't solve conflicts through reason, only conquest. Bowser would likely be a different person today if not for him.
    • Serving as one for the Koopa and Mushroom Kingdoms as a whole, The Ruined Dragon was created by the Koopas during the war that started the conflict between them and the Toads. While it did allow the Koopas to reign triumphant over the Toads, it also laid Crumbleden to waste, causing both races to abandon their old home and start their own individual kingdoms.
  • Hidden Villain: It's revealed during Bowser's flashback on how he got the idea to rule the universe that Topmaniac is not actually the leader of the Topman Tribe, but has an unseen superior who reveals to Bowser the secrets of the Comet Observatory. So far, this being has only been heard in said flashback.
  • I'm Not Doing That Again: Mario absolutely loathed the Star Ball segment in Rolling Greens Galaxy and swore he'd never do that again.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Bowser happily mocks Alex because he attacked on his birthday and ate his cake. Because why not?
    • Just to have a little fun before going for the kill, Alpha Pandora delivers a brutal and heart wrenching "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Mario.
  • Knight Templar: Aster was this in the past when he committed genocide on Bowser's army in an effort to bring justice on Bowser for what he did to the Mushroom King and Queen. It comes back to bite him years later.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Downplayed. While Aster has his endearing moments, his introduction to the story and the lore he brought with him led it down a darker route than the original game
  • The Lancer: Aster to a t. While he is similar to Mario in terms of physical strength, he's everything the plucky plumber isn't personality-wise.
  • Mind over Matter: Aster has the abilities the player had with the Wii Remote in the original game. He can attract Star Bits, shoot them from mid air, concentrate with his mind to utilize Pull Stars (though Mario can do this too), and even attract the floating blocks in Space Junk to form a path.
  • More Hero than Thou: Alex tries to sacrifice himself to Bowser in order to save Peach, but Luigi tells him it isn't worth his life and offers himself instead. Unfortunately, Bowser doesn't accept either of their offers.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • In Chapter 13, when Mario and Aster are in Flipswitch Galaxy and are changing the panels from blue to yellow, the former thinks of it as "painting the planet yellow". Which happens to be the name of that galaxy's mission in the game.
    • In Chapter 15, Mario is shocked over Aster's Mind over Matter reveal so much that he is left silent for a few moments, leading Aster to reference Mario's common role in the games as a Heroic Mime.
  • Named by the Adaptation:
    • The Toad Brigade now all have actual names rather than being referred to by their roles.
      • Captain Toad still has his original name.
      • Hint Toad is now Dylan T.
      • Bank Toad is now Jeff T.
      • Mail Toad is now Seth T.
      • Yellow Toad is now Bob T.
    • Rosalina's parents are named King Hickory and Queen Luciana. Her brother is prince Lockie.
  • Never Say "Die": Aster prefers to use the Game Over euphemism rather than vulgar words like "die" or "kill", much like the characters in Super Paper Mario.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Why is Bowser such a self-entitled Jerkass who rarely shows his sympathetic Affably Evil side to others besides his close ones? Because Aster went and humiliated him and murdered a bunch of his minions after he told him his reasons for killing the King and Queen, and he didn't believe them. After that, Bowser swore to never show what he perceives as weakness out in public ever again.
  • Original Character:
    • Aster is Mario's new companion throughout the adventure and is Rosalina's long lost husband. While he is well meaning and helpful to Mario and Co., he has a bit of a Dark and Troubled Past.
    • Bootrix is a ghost in Ghostly Galaxy who suffers from a loss of a loved one, and being abused by her sisters. She teams up with Luigi to help save her home.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Alex is normally fine with extreme heights, but when Bowser lifts Peach's Castle all the way out into space, even he is terrified!
  • Patchwork Fic: This fic includes Alex and Leah from nintendoscript15's stories joining the adventure. It even references events from his stories.
  • Reality-Breaking Paradox: Parodied. Luma tells Mario a rumor his sister spread about black holes spawning whenever someone in the universe divides by 0. Bowser Jr. sees this conversation and divides by 0 himself and... nothing happens. Aster then josses this theory altogether.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Rosalina and Aster are over 1000 years old, but they look to be in their late 20s to early 30s.
  • Rejected Apology: When Aster tried to apologize to Bowser for killing his minions and humiliating him 3 years prior to the events of the story, he didn’t accept it. Surprisingly a justified case for someone like Bowser, since he tried to reason with Aster back then, but he wasn't willing to listen.
  • Related in the Adaptation:
    • Because Rosalina was princess of the Mushroom Kingdom in the past, that makes her related to Peach, like the original concepts for the game.
    • Kamella and Kamek are cousins here, with no signs of such a relationship in the original.
  • Robotic Reveal: Downplayed. Aster is mostly human, but is revealed to have a robotic leg, making him a Cyborg. Currently, the origin of this is unknown.
  • Roger Rabbit Effect: Averted with Alex and Leah's transformations into animated forms before meeting up with Mario.
  • Shadow Archetype: Inverted with Mario towards Aster. Mario's Wide-Eyed Idealist attitude made Aster think back to the days where he was mostly the same, a happier and optimistic person who would approach a dangerous situation head on and believe he'd come out on top. After having faced Bowser on his own, he believes that Mario brought out the best in him.
  • Shout-Out:
    • In Chapter 16, Bowser says during a battle with Peach:
"Hey! LiamTheYoshi called! He wants his insults back!"
    • This is a reference to one of mariobroultimate's friends, and fellow fanfic writer, LiamTheYoshi, who'd use the phrase "stupa koopa" in his stories as a Mario version of Sonic's "dumb bots" quote from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
    • In Chapter 26, the cartoon the Toads, Lumas, and Alex were watching was based on this video.
  • Skewed Priorities: Had Peach not decided to go back for a photo album, maybe she would've escaped with the others.
  • Sudden Sequel Heel Syndrome: Aqua, previously the main heroine of Super Mario Sunshine: A Sprite of Light, usurps Peach's throne and proceeds to bully her along with the Toads. Subverted when it turns out to be just a dream.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Alpha Pandora delivers one to Mario, breaking down every single flaw that he has, even for the most tiniest offenses and taking advantage of being his "best friend" to weaken him more.
    • Peach after going completely off the rails gives one to Bowser telling him how selfish he is and how he doesn't truly understand how love works.
  • Toon Transformation: Happened to Alex and Leah offscreen. They explained that they were hit in the head by colorful chunks falling from the sky, which are implied to be star bits, transforming them from their live-action forms into animated forms more in line with the rest of the Mario universe.
  • Unwilling Roboticization: Alex becomes victim to this in Battlerock Galaxy where he is forced by the Topman Tribe into becoming their servant by armoring him up and placing a chip into his brain that turns him into Alpha Pandora and forces him to watch as he hurts his loved ones both mentally and physically.
  • Villain Opening Scene: The very first chapter shows Bowser reading the book from the start of the game, ripping it apart, and then stealing all the Power Stars from the Comet Observatory.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Bowser seems to be a firm believer of this, since he previously tried to reason with Aster, only for him to beat up and kill his minions and nearly kill him. He'll only show his hidden nice side around Bowser Jr., Kamek, and eventually Peach.
  • Waking Up Elsewhere: After being blasted off into space by Kamek, Mario was woken up by a Luma to find himself in the gateway to the starry skies, where all sorts of confusion and antics ensue.
  • Written by the Winners: Inverted. The Toads actually lost the war against the Koopas in Crumbleden, but after the few survivors started their own kingdom, they were quick to write the Koopas off as a purely evil conqueror race despite the fact that the Toads started the war in the first place. And with such history being spread across the world, not helped by the fact that they created a dragon which destroyed their own kingdom, the koopa race became hated across the world and banished to the dark lands. Played straight in the present thanks to Mario helping the Mushroom Kingdom claim constant victory. Peach was actually surprised to hear of the Toads' selfishness since she raised to believe the Koopas had no redeeming qualities, with Bowser claiming her kingdom to be biased.

Mar10 Day 2021 contains examples of:

  • Loose Canon: This takes place in March while ''The Dark Mysteries of the Cosmos takes place in November. At least from the perspective of Alex and Leah. So this likely isn't connected to the canon material.
  • Narcissist: Aster seems to think Mario is this upon learning about his supposed special day.
