  • 1917: The Schofield/Blake pairing has taken off within the fandom, due to them becoming Fire-Forged Friends throughout the movie. While we learn that Schofield has a wife and child within the last few minutes of the movie, that has done nothing to stop the shippers.
  • Adventures in Babysitting (2016): While Jenny ends up with Zac and Lola gets together with with Officer James. Most fans prefer to ship Jenny and Lola together instead. This is mostly due to the chemistry between Sabrina Carpenter and Sofia Carson, as well as the Les Yay between them. On both Fanfiction Dot Net and Archive of Our Own, the pairing dominates the fanfiction about the movie. It's also usually one of the first things to come up when discussing the film.
  • All Cheerleaders Die: While Maddy/Leena do have some fans, and end up getting back together, Maddy/Tracy gets more attention and shipping, despite Tracy's death and the reveal that Maddy was essentially using Tracy.
  • Barbie (2023): Despite the fact that Gloria is married, most fans ship her with Barbie instead, due to the chemistry between their actresses, Barbie being Gloria's doll, and the fact that Gloria's husband is only in two scenes and doesn't even get a name. It also doesn't hurt that both Margot Robbie and America Ferrera have called Barbie and Gloria a love story.
  • Barely Lethal: Despite Megan ending up with Roger and Liz ending up with Gooch, the Megan/Liz pairing is easily the most popular pairing in the fandom.
  • Bend It Like Beckham: Jess and Jules are such a popular ship that it led to rumors about this being the original plan in the script and are easily more popular than the canon Jess/Joe. Even Keira Knightley gave her approval, saying she'd do a sequel where Jules and Jess become a couple.
  • Bill & Ted has, well, Bill/Ted. The fact that their actual girlfriends qualify as Satellite Love Interests helps. Most fanworks for the film tend to be for the ship, especially on Tumblr.
  • The Black Phone: The ending of the film implies that Finney starts a relationship with his crush, Donna. However, most fans prefer to pair him with his friend Robin, mainly due to their chemistry and Robin encouraging Finney to stand up for himself, plus many feeling that Donna is not given much in the way of character.
  • Blue Crush: While Anne Marie ends up with Matt in canon, very few fans of the film actually ship her with him. Instead, most fans ship her with close friend Eden due to the chemistry between Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez, along with Eden being the most encouraging towards Anne Marie to try to surf again. For example, Anne Marie/Eden takes up most of the films fics on AO3, while Anne Marie/Matt has no fics for them on the site.
  • Forget the fans, even the haters agree when it comes to The Book of Masters. Yangul/Katya is vastly preferred over the Official Couple Ivan/Katya. Yangul has several poignant I Want My Beloved to Be Happy scenes with Katya and shows readiness to make sacrifices for her sake (culminating in a full-fledged Heroic Sacrifice). Meanwhile, most viewers think Ivan and Katya barely get any chemistry and Ivan just gets bonus after bonus thanks to their relationship.
  • Bring It On: Most of the fans of the first movie pair Torrance with Missy instead of her brother Cliff. This is due to their friendship that is littered with heaps of Les Yay, as well as Torrance really wanting Missy on the team and the two instantly hitting it off. Also, many fans feeling that they have better chemistry than her with Cliff. On Archive of Our Own they have the most fanfiction of any ship from the film series.
  • Burnt: Even though Adam/Helene is the Official Couple, Adam/Tony has far more support and fans due to Tony's popularity as a character and his crush on Adam, Bradley Cooper and Daniel Brühl's strong chemistry, and many finding Adam's relationship with Helene to be underdeveloped and rooted in toxicity.
  • The Cabin in the Woods: Dana and Marty are the subject of the lion's share of shipping fics written about the film. It is also far more popular than the canon Dana/Holden. This seems to be because Dana/Holden being forced by The Organization In-Universe to emulate a horror movie, along with Dana Marty being the only two survivors.
  • Camp Rock:
    • Many fans prefer to ship Nate with Caitlyn over his canon girlfriend Dana, despite the two barely interacting with each other in either movie. This is due to the feeling that their personalities would work better together than Nate and Dana.
    • On Fanfiction Dot Net, the number of crossover fics that pair Mitchie with Alex Russo rival or even surpass those that pair her with her actual boyfriend Shane, likely due to fans feeling their personalities would work well together and the real life relationship between their actresses. These fics tend to either be the two meeting in a canon-like situation or complete AUs that reinvent both settings from the ground up.
  • Charlie's Angels (2019): Jane is canonically paired with Langston, but next to no fans ship her with him. Instead, most fans ship her with her fellow angels Elena and Sabina, either individually or both at the same time, mainly due to them feeling that she has better chemistry with them.
  • Fans of the Rupert Grint movie Cherrybomb (2009) can generally be split into two categories: devoted Malachy/Luke shippers who simply ignore Michelle's existence; and batshit crazy, foaming-at-the-mouth Malachy/Luke shippers who openly detest Michelle and loudly wish her dead. This is a pretty extreme reaction given that in canon, both guys are seemingly straight and spend most of the movie competing for Michelle's affections. That said, several cast members have alluded to the strong homoerotic subtext of Malachy and Luke's relationship, so it probably doesn't exist entirely in the minds of yaoi fangirls.
  • Chloe: The film ends with Catherine reconfirming her love with her husband David, but next to no fans ship her with him. Instead, most fans ship her with the titular Chloe, who becomes obsessively in love with Cathrine, due to them finding Chloe sympathetic and feeling that they have better chemistry.
  • The Craft: Sarah and Nancy is the most popular ship in the fandom. It doesn't help with Nancy's Ambiguously Bi moments, her obsession with Sarah, and the fact that Sarah's Love Interest, Chris, is a sleazy asshole who mistreats her.
  • Cruel Intentions: There are very few fanfics for the canonical pairing of Sebastian/Annette around the internet. Most fans were rooting for Sebastian to end up with his scheming stepsister Kathryn, due to the main instigating force being them making the bet, which involves Kathryn letting him sleep with her, and Kathryn getting the Draco in Leather Pants treatment due to being played by Sarah Michelle Gellar.
  • DC Extended Universe: Despite Clark Kent being in a loving relationship with Lois Lane, most fanfiction about the films instead pairs him up with rival turned ally Bruce Wayne. This is due to the tension between the two during Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the fact that the pairing was already very popular in the comics. This only grew after Justice League (2017), where Bruce spends much of the movie trying to revive Clark and increased the Ho Yay between the two further. They have the most fanfiction of any pairing in the DCEU tag on Archive of Our Own. Zack Snyder's Justice League adds Bruce's pleading with Clark when the latter has gone berserk. It makes him sound positively broken-hearted.
  • The Deer Hunter: The movie's small but dedicated fandom is way more attached to Mike/Nick than to official couples Mike/Linda or Nick/Linda.
  • Descendants: Mal/Evie is more popular than Evie/Doug. This is mainly due to the Les Yay between them throughout the three movies. Many fans feel that the two had better chemistry with each other than Evie does with her actual boyfriend. Such as the scene where Evie is complimenting Mal's appearance in the mirror with her head on Mal's shoulder. Their duet Space Between also got many to jump on board the ship.
  • The Devil Wears Prada: Most fans of the film adaptation prefer to ship Andy with Miranda over her canon love interest Nate. Reasons for such seem to be Meryl Streep's seductive performance, and feeling that they have better chemistry then Andy did with Nate. (It helps that Nate is pretty much The Scrappy.) As well as the fact that their growing relationship drives the film. The fanfiction about the two being in the 2000s on Archive of Our Own, and it remains quite popular on sites like Tumblr and YouTube to this day.
  • Rahul and Nisha from Dil To Pagal Hai have a following, if only because Pooja is sometimes considered TOO perfect...
  • Do Revenge: Drea Torres and Eleanor Levetan/Nora Cutler instantly proved to be an insanely more popular pairing together than Drea with her canon pairing with Russ or Eleanor's canon one with Gabbi Broussard. This is attributed heavily not only to the Les Yay between the two characters and their complex and challenging relationship, but by means of the strong chemistry between actors Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke as well.
  • Fans of An Education like to pair Jenny with Danny, especially since her love interest in the film is married.
  • Fans of the Brit Com film Four Weddings and a Funeral often complain that the main character's witty, lovelorn friend Fiona is a far better match for him than the vacuous American he ends up with.
  • Ghostbusters (1984): Despite Janine ending up with Louis in the second movie, most fans don't ship her with him. Instead, most fans preferred her awkward chemistry with Egon. This is also helped by the fact that she had a crush on him in the original (along with the novelization having a "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue where they got married) and the cartoon having Ship Tease between the two. Egon's actor and franchise co-creator, Harold Ramis, had removed the romance from the movie during rewrites due to how busy the script was, there already being a romantic pairing with Peter/Dana making Egon/Janine redundant and feeling that such a thing didn't seem right for Egon anymore.
  • Some The Great Race fans consider Maggie/Professor Fate as having more chemistry than Leslie/Maggie. Probably not helped by how one scene has her actually kissing the guy. There's actually some Reality Subtext here. Natalie Wood was forced by the studio to do this movie against her wishes, then to make matters worse she was paired up with Tony Curtis. They'd already done two films together and had developed a passionate hatred for each other, so the lack of chemistry between Maggie and Leslie was genuine.
  • The Hangover: Most fans liked the pairing between Stu and Phil, and were disappointed to see that the sequel has Stu engaged and eventually marries Lauren.
  • The most popular pairing in the fandom for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters by far is Hansel/Gretel. This is despite a short-"haired" witch taunting them by saying they should fornicate with each other in the film, which only disgusts them. Hansel also has a canonical female love interest (who isn't Gretel) in the white witch Mina, but chemistry between their actors was rather lacking (with it coming off as the two of them being Strangled by the Red String). Add a case of Platonic Writing, Romantic Reading with Hansel and Gretel themselves (both characters are quite physically affectionate with one another, several scenes where they show concern for the other can come across as pining, and both actors being rather attractive), and you get this.
  • After all the strife Harper put Abby through in Happiest Season, quite a number of viewers expressed a desire to see Abby get together with Harper's ex Riley instead, including Riley’s actress Aubrey Plaza.
  • Heathers: While the Official Couple of Veronica and JD is the most popular straight pairing by far, even this is outstripped by the Les Yay shippers, themselves roughly evenly split into pairing Veronica with Heather Chandler or Heather MacNamara - the former being popular for the two girls' Like an Old Married Couple bickering being easily read as Belligerent Sexual Tension, and the latter for the scene where Veronica saves Heather's life, which is one of the few genuinely heartwarming scenes in this pitch-black comedy.
  • High School Musical fans have been shipping Chad and Ryan ever since the second movie. Ryan's "You'll never know if you never try" and Chad's "I'll show you how I swing" have served as innuendo, while wearing each other's clothes fueled additional locker room images. Chad's relationship with Taylor and Ryan's Love Interest Kelsi (added in the third movie) have not deterred shippers the slightest. Chad/Ryan seem to be more popular than series Official Couple Troy/Gabriella, with Archive of Our Own featuring four times as many tags for Chad/Ryan than for Troy/Gabriella.
  • House of Wax (2005): Even though Carly is dating Wade, a lot of fans like the idea of pairing Carly and Nick together instead. Their story plays out more like estranged lovers than estranged siblings — not helped by the fact that they save each other's lives like a Battle Couple, Nick's blatant dislike of Wade comes across more like jealousy than just him being an overprotective sibling, and the twins' Sibling Rivalry-laden arguments all coming across as pretty flirtatious.
  • James Bond:
    • James Bond is, of course, hardly the type to settle down (except that one time, and it's implied he was at least considering it a few other times), but with fans who think he should, the most popular pairing, at least among female fans on LiveJournal, seems to be not with any of his lovely companions from his adventures but rather with his perennial UST object, MI6 secretary Moneypenny. The ones that aren't Yaoi Fangirls, anyway; those typically pair him with Alec. They shared everything, you know...
    • Daniel Craig's version of Bond is often the subject of far more shipping than his predecessors, but the most popular is him with the version of Q that was introduced in Skyfall. Many felt that Craig and Ben Whishaw had far better chemistry than Bond had with any of his one-off love interests, and in no time at all, the pairing had dominated fanfiction for the series on Archive of Our Own, with over 7000 fics, while the next most popular only has 700. Even when Spectre gave him a real love interest, Madeleine Swann, Bond/Q remained far more popular.
  • Jennifer's Body: Most of the film's fandom ships Jennifer and Needy together. Other ships are basically nonexistent. This is mostly due to the huge amount of Les Yay between them, to the point that it's barely subtext. Even Megan Fox has said she played Jennifer as a lesbian with a crush on Needy. On Archive of Our Own and Fanfiction Dot Net, this pairing has the most fanfiction of any other pairing. Needy/Chip barely has any on either website, though he does surprisingly manage to avoid Die for Our Ship due to the character and relationship respectively both being presented in a positive and likeable light in the film proper.
  • John Tucker Must Die: Despite Kate ending up with Scott, most fans don't ship her with him. Instead most fans prefer to pair Kate with Beth. This is usually due to the fact that they actually kiss, Beth often being interpreted as bisexual, and the chemistry between the two actresses. There's not much fanfiction about the film, but most of it is Kate/Beth.
  • By far, the most popular pairing in the Kingsman: The Secret Service fandom is Harry/Eggsy. Despite the fact that Harry seemingly dies at the end of the film and Eggsy marries Tilde in the sequel.
  • Last Night in Soho has Eloise paired canonically with John. However, it is more popular, at least in fanfiction, to ship her with Sandie. The fact that Eloise spends the film seeing flashbacks to Sandie's younger life, tries to solve her supposed murder, and that Sandie's ghost ends up watching over Eloise at the end certainly helps. It also doesn't hurt that Sandie is played by Anya Taylor-Joy.
  • Legend (1985): Lili/Darkness is actually quite popular, despite Lili's canon love interest being Jack. You can find a lot of fan fiction dedicated to this pairing.
  • While Mo is paired up with Scott in Lemonade Mouth, fans like to ship her with Charlie instead.
  • Live Free or Die Hard: While John McClane had his tumultuous marriage to Holly in previous movies and Matthew Farrell has his budding romance with Lucy in this one, fans expressed far more interest in McClane and Farrell getting together due to the movie being centered around their dynamic and Bruce Willis and Justin Long having good chemistry too. Most of the fanfiction about the film series as a whole is John/Matt.
  • The Lost Boys: Michael's canon love interest is Star, but you wouldn't think so with all the fanfics pairing him with David. This is mostly due to the Ho Yay between the two, as well as the fact that David often gets the Draco in Leather Pants treatment from fans due to being played by Kiefer Sutherland. On most sites like AO3 or Tumblr, Michael/David dominates the shipping for the series.
  • Maleficent: Fans prefer to ship Aurora with Maleficent over her canonical husband Phillip, despite the fact that former's relationship is more intended to be familial than romantic.
  • Mamma Mia!: In the film adaptation, Rosie has a crush on Bill and eventually gets with him in the climax of the movie. They break up sometime between movies, but get back together in the second one. However, most fans prefer to pair her with Tanya. This is due to it being hinted that Bill cheating on her being the reason they brook up and the Les Yay between the two.
  • Mean Girls: In both the film and musical adaptation, Cady is in love with Aaron, but most of the fanfics and fanart which centers around her instead pair her with Janis, due to the authors and artists feeling that they have better chemistry. Meanwhile, Janis hooks up with a Kevin Gnapoor in the film (the musical removes this plot point), but most fans ship her with Regina, mainly due to the film having multiple scenes in which many characters claim Janis has a crush on Regina.
  • Minutemen: Despite Virgil being in love with Stephanie to the point that the film ends with them getting a Maybe Ever After, you will find next to no fanfiction pairing him with her. Instead, most fans prefer to pair him with either of his co-male leads, Zeke or Charlie. Zeke/Virgil is arguably the most popular due to the chemistry between Jason Dolley and Nicholas Braun and Zeke being the most popular character from the film. Charlie/Virgil is popular because of the large amount of screentime dedicated to their friendship and is also more popular than Charlie's canon relationship with Jeanette.
  • Mission: Impossible Film Series:
    • Ethan Hunt/Benji Dunn aka Benthan is the biggest ship in the fan base. This is mainly due to the chemistry between Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg and the Ho Yay that they have in later films. On most sites like Tumblr or AO3, Ethan/Benji easily outranks Ethan being shipped with either his former wife Julia Meade or his new canon Love Interest Ilsa Faust.
    • Julia was married to Ethan before eventually getting remarried to Erik. Despite this, pairing Ethan and Julia also remains very popular among fans today, mainly because Erik has very little characterization beyond being a Nice Guy.
  • Mulan (2020): Mulan/Xian Lang is easily more popular than implied to be canon Mulan/Chen on almost every site, due to many feeling that they have better chemistry and Xian Lang's attempts to convince Mulan to join her, before sacrificing herself to save Mulan. It helps that Xian is a fan favorite, while Chen is often seen as Replacement Scrappy for Li Shang.
  • National Treasure: In canon, Ben ends the film with Abigail. However, while that does have its fans, more fans prefer to pair Ben with Riley. This is mainly due to the chemistry between the two and the large amount of Ho Yay between them. Most of the fanfiction for the films around the internet is Ben/Riley and it usually easily outranks Ben/Abigail.
  • Disney's black sheep turned cult classic movie-musical Newsies has a small but rabid fandom that definitely seems to prefer Jack and David, instead of the canon Jack and Sarah, sister of David. It's not hard to see why.
  • A chunk of the Now, Voyager audience seem to prefer Dr Jaquith as a romantic partner for Charlotte, finding Jerry a little dull in comparison to the charming Jaquith. Bette Davis herself said that she imagined Charlotte marrying Dr. Jaquith after the film ended, as Jerry was 'too weak' for Charlotte.
  • Ocean's Eleven: Danny/Rusty is more popular than Danny/Tess is. Due to the Ho Yay between the two. As well as the fact that George Clooney and Brad Pitt have better chemistry than Clooney with Julia Roberts. Together they make up the most popular pairing of the trilogy.
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Despite Rick and Cliff pursuing their own separate romances, fans like to ship them together because of their strong friendship and due to coming across like an old married couple rather than a longtime pair of buddies at some points, not to mention their actors' chemistry. It also helps that Rick's wife Francesca isn't introduced until very late into the movie while any romance that's built up between Cliff and his own love interest Pussycat gets thoroughly sunk.
  • Oppenheimer: The titular Oppenheimer is canonically paired with his wife Kitty, but online his ship with Ernest Lawrence is more popular due to their close friendship and the chemistry between Cillian Murphy and Josh Hartnett. Those who don't ship Oppenheimer with Lawrence tend to ship him with Barbie from the film of the same name over any of the canon options, due to the Barbenheimer memes and the fact that the two fandoms get along very well.
  • Pacific Rim: When Newton Geizler's actor said that he played his character as being in love with Hermann Gottlieb, they instantly became the fandom's #1 couple, far above any pairings for the film's main characters Raleigh and Mako, even though Hermann may be married to someone else depending on how much stock you place into the novelization and the sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising had Newt become the Big Bad.
  • Raoul and Christine end up together in The Phantom of the Opera, but most fans prefer Christine to be with Erik - especially the ones that go by the 2004 version of it (where the Phantom is portrayed by Gerard Butler). Also see the series' entry in the Theater section.
  • Pitch Perfect: Beca/Chloe, aka Bechloe, is the most popular ship in the fandom and easily more so than Beca's canon ship with Jesse. In fact, fans had already started shipping them from the first trailer, and this increased tenfold when the film came out and had loads of Les Yay between them, such as the infamous scene where Chloe walks into Beca's shower to force her to sing. Even when the third film gave Chloe a love interest in the form of Chicago, more fans still shipped her with Beca.
  • Rosie/Carter is the most popular ship for Princess Protection Program. This is due to the great chemistry between Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. As well as their well-developed friendship that is the emotional center of the film. It's rare to find a fanfic with either ending up with Ed or Donny. Most of the canonical fanfiction (as opposed to ones based on Selena and Demi which are slotted there falsely at times) are about the Princess and the Bait girl living happily ever after.
  • Shaw is in a relationship with Holloway in Prometheus, but most fanfiction you'll find will pair her with David.
  • In Push: Compare Nick and Cassie's number of YouTube videos (over twenty) to Nick and Kira's (none). Yeah.
  • The Queen of the Damned fandom in general favors the vampire/vampire pairing Lestat/Akasha over the human/vampire pairing Lestat/Jesse. This despite Akasha being portrayed as pure evil and a bloodthirsty megalomaniac who wants to drink the world dry, Akasha was sexy while Jesse was made into a Damsel Scrappy and mousy Vampire Vannabe who just got on viewers' nerves.
  • Reality Bites: Most fans prefer Lelaina/Michael over Lelaina/Troy. The film clearly wants you to root for Lelaina to get together with Troy, although he's really a terrible choice in every single way. Michael, on the other hand, is a nice guy who has a job, but because of that, that makes him a sell-out to "The Man" who should be dumped.
  • Resident Evil Film Series: Though Alice is given ship tease and has Unresolved Sexual Tension with Carlos, to the point that a clone of him was selected to play her husband in a sequel, most fan prefer to pair her with Claire, due to the fact that she is the only game character who appears in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, and the fact that Claire has to kill her boyfriend Doc when he betrays her. It helps that Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter also have good chemistry with each other. On Archive of Our Own and Fanfiction Dot Net, the pairing dominates the fanfiction about the movies.
  • Rush (2013): While due to being a biopic, James' canon romance is with Suzy (even if it doesn't work out) and Niki is Happily Married to Marlene, most fans walked away from this film shipping James and Niki together due to the film being centered around their rivalry and the chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl. On Archive of Our Own, for example, James/Niki easily outranks their canon pairings.
  • In Saw, Lawrence is married to Alison, but next to no fans ship him with her. Instead, most ship him with Adam, mainly due to them being the only two people in most of the film, the two being forced to work together, and Adam being a fan favorite. Even after many sequels and Adam being long dead, Adam/Lawrence (also known as Chainshipping) remains the most popular pairing from the Saw franchise as a whole.
  • Scream:
    • Despite it being revealed that Billy Loomis never loved her and was plotting to kill her, many fans to this day still ship Sidney Prescott with Billy, mainly due to their chemistry and Billy getting a healthy dose of Draco in Leather Pants. It is far more popular than her pairing with Mark Kincaid, who the fifth film reveals she married and had children with.
    • Despite the sixth film having Tara Carpenter get together with Chad Meeks-Martin, it is still far more popular to pair Tara with Amber Freeman, even with Amber being dead after trying to kill Tara and her friends in the fifth film. This is mainly due to the chemistry between Tara and Amber and the fact that Tara and Amber were dating in the original script for Scream (2022). It's also easily more popular than the canon Amber/Richie Kirsch.
  • She's the Man: Most fanfiction about this film on Archive of Our Own has Viola and Olivia ending up together rather than with their respective love interests, Duke and Sebastian. This is mostly due to flirting and build-up occurring between them rather than between Olivia and Sebastian. It also stems from fans feeling that Viola and Olivia have more chemistry than Duke and Viola.
  • Many Sierra Burgess is a Loser fans think that Sierra/Veronica would have been a much more likable and compelling couple than Sierra/Jamey, due to how close they end up becoming and the character development that arises from their friendship. Jamey however averts Die for Our Ship due to being a genuinely Nice Guy and Sierra/Jamey's detractors, if anything, point out that Sierra and Veronica hardcore catfished Jamey.
  • A Simple Favor: Stephanie/Emily is easily the most popular pairing in the fandom and almost all of the fan content for the film is dedicated to the pairing. It is also more popular than either Emily or Stephanie with Sean, Emily's husband who Stephanie has an affair with and whom Stephanie was supposed to end up with until they changed the ending. It helps that not only do Stephanie and Emily share a lot of Les Yay, but their actresses, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively respectively, also have great chemistry.
  • Sky High (2005): Both Warren/Layla and Warren/Will are more popular than the canon Layla/Will. The former because of their chemistry while pretending to date and the latter because of the Ho Yay between the two.
  • Fans of Snow White & the Huntsman prefer Snow White/Huntsman as opposed to Snow White/William. It does not help that the Huntsman kissing Snow White is what awakens her from death after eating the poisoned apple, whilst William's kiss did nothing, carrying the implication he’s her One True Love, but in the sequel she’s married to William and the Huntsman ends up back with his Not Quite Dead wife, Sara.
  • The Social Network: Mark/Eduardo beats the canon pairings of Mark/Erica and Eduardo/Christy by a very large margin, partially due to the chemistry between Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield. On Archive of Our Own, Mark/Eduardo has 1,649 fanfics (by comparison, the second most popular pairing, Sean/Eduardo, only has 74 fics).
  • Speed: Jack Traven and Annie Porter, though they've split up between this movie and the next one, still get a lot of support from the fans given not only how loved this movie is and how reviled the sequel is, but also given both the very well-received chemistry between Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock and that Annie's new Love Interest Alex Shaw (Jason Patric) is essentially just a less-interesting Expy of Jack.
  • In the DVD commentary for Starship Troopers, director Paul Verhoeven says fans wanted Carmen to die and Johnny to end up with Dizzy, proving that it isn't only fans who have preferred couples. Considering that in the original book Dizzy is male (not to mention dead for a good chunk of the book) and Johnny and Carmen have at most a one-night stand together, this wouldn't have been such a bad change compared to most of the rest of the changes Verhoeven actually did make.
  • The Official Couple in Star Trek (2009) is Spock/Uhura. There is a sizable section of the fandom for whom Kirk/Spock is the Fan-Preferred Couple, a carry over from the original TV series where Kirk/Spock was vastly more popular than any other ship, and some of them believe that Spock/Uhura was put in purely to dissuade Kirk/Spock shippers. In the second reboot movie they introduced Dr. Carol Marcus as Kirk's potential love interest, but this did little to stop Kirk/Spock from being the most popular ship in the fandom.
  • Star Wars:
    • Finn/Poe was initially the sequel trilogy's most popular pairing overall thanks to their shippy interactions in The Force Awakens. Although an official love interest for Finn was introduced in the form of The Last Jedi's Rose Tico, and The Rise of Skywalker introduced Jannah and Zorii Bliss seemingly as Implied Love Interest figures for the two, it's still easily the most popular pairing for both characters and the characters' actors have expressed their support of it in interviews.
    • Solo: A Star Wars Story gives Han a pre-Leia love interest in the form of Qi'ra - one that the fandom seems to have completely shrugged off, in favor of Lando. In an odd case of this, it rarely supersedes Leia entirely; it just seems to be strongly agreed that Han and Lando were together and are Amicable Exes by the time of the original trilogy, while Qi'ra barely even rates a blip. Even Billy Dee Williams suggested at a convention that they'd had sex at least once.
  • Most Teen Beach Movie fans seem to prefer pairings Lela and Mack together over their canon pairings with Tanner and Brady. They have the most fics about them on Archive of Our Own. Reasons why may include their Les Yay in the films or their expanded relationship in the second movie that is hinted to have survived the 53 years of history reset.
  • Top Gun attempts to sell Maverick/Charlie as the Official Couple, however very few people really buy into it, pointing out that there's more chemistry between Maverick and his rival, Iceman.
  • This happens in-universe in The Truman Show, where it's revealed that Truman's wife, Meryl, is rather unpopular among the audience—she's not a great actress, quite a few of her lines are Product Placement, and her attempts to show that she loves Truman are way too over-the-top to believe. Instead, Truman seems drawn to Sylvia, his old high-school flame, whom he had a much better connection with but who was written out of the show because she tried to tell him the truth. It's suggested that the audience actually agrees with Truman, thinking that him and Sylvia had better chemistry and calling Meryl "the rebound."
  • Ryan and Natalie from Up in the Air, mostly due to the fact that in the final act it's revealed Ryan's love interest, Alex, is married with a family.
  • Venom (2018): Eddie/Venom has become incredibly popular amongst the fandom, being paired up together constantly despite Venom being an extraterrestrial blob of tar not confirmed capable of sexual reproduction. Reasons why tend to be their dynamic being seen as the best part of the film, the fact that they actually kiss, though Venom was bonded with Anne at the time, and the fact that their bonding is the emotional center of the film. It is incredibly popular on Tumblr and other fanfiction sites, and easily tops the canon Eddie/Anne.

  • Victor Frankenstein: Despite the fact that Igor ends up with Lorelei, far more fans ship him with Victor. This is due to feeling that he has far more chemistry with Victor and their Ho Yay filled friendship being the main focus. Add the fact that Daniel Radcliffe plays Igor and James McAvoy plays Victor, plus both actors knowingly encourage shippers in interviews, and it's little wonder that fans on Tumblr or who write fanfiction latched onto the pairing.
  • X-Men Film Series
    • After the release of the first movie most fans found themselves shipping Logan and Rogue together instead of their canon ships of Jean and Bobby respectively. This mostly due to their growing relationship being a main focus of the movie and Rogue having an unrequited crush on Logan. Even after Logan gets multiple love interests and dies in his solo films, Rogan still outshines every other film pairing besides Charles x Erik. (It helps Rogue is one of the few women who is romantically teased with Logan who doesn't die afterwards.)
    • Charles/Erik is the official pairing in X-Men: First Class, even according to certain screenwriters and actors. It's incorporated even in fics that involve the younger X-Men (by having them act as parents), and those who do ship Erik/Raven or Charles/Moira are a small minority. Charles/Erik even managed to supplant Logan/Rogue as the most popular pairing of the film series—just look at the difference in the sheer number of stories on Archive of Our Own for proof. James McAvoy wasn't kidding when he called it the "Brangelina of X-Men"; Cherik has become such a phenomenon that British TV host Graham Norton took notice of it and showed McAvoy and Fassbender some of the fanart and fanfiction. On the other side of the pond, Conan O'Brien's interview with the two actors was almost exclusively about their onscreen/offscreen Ho Yay, and a Cherik fanvid was screened at the end.
