Tales of the Monkey Queen is a canon rewrite of Dragon Ball by SonOfSharknado and Zelenal. Starting from the very beginning, it tells of a world where Son Goku was a girl and explores not only the ramifications of that but also numerous other changes.

While it is a rewrite of Dragon Ball, it's careful about just how much it changes. As stated by the authors from the outset, the basic outline of the story remains unchanged while a lot of the details are different. For example, the 21st Tenkaichi Budoukai still ends with Goku fighting Jackie Chun but every previous fight is between different people. As such, the story attempts to carry a sense of familiarity while changing just enough to keep things interesting.

The story can be found on fanfiction.net and on Archive of Our Own. At over 100 chapters and over 500,000 words, it's one of the longest Dragon Ball fanfics on AO3.

Related to Monkey Queen is The Light's Willpower which tells a different version of Future Trunks' story. Like its parent fic, it can be found on fanfiction.net and on Archive of Our Own.

Seeing as how this is a rewrite of the Dragon Ball manga, nearly every trope found there can also be found here. The following are tropes or examples not present in the original work.

This work contains examples of:

• Adaptational Alternate Ending: Unlike the original continuity, Gohan is the one to kill Kid Boo. After having the energy of the Genki Dama transferred into him by Goku, he finishes Boo off with his signature move: the Ryuhameha.
• Action Girl: Apart from the main character being as strong as her canon counterpart, we have Launch, Suno, some Gender Flip characters, etc.
• Adaptational Badass: Suno and Chi-Chi, in the original Dragon Ball, were respectively more or less a civilian, and a Badass Normal who more or less retired from fighting after the start of Z. Here, they're both members of the Z-fighters, and Suno is more or less Krillin's main rival for the position of the strongest "pure" human.
  • While they were already badass in canon, later on, Lapis and Lazuli (Androids 17 and 18) both respectively start training under the Crane and Turtle schools of martial arts. Lapis plays with this a bit, since Dragon Ball Super (which was released after this fic) has Android 17 reach god-tier levels of power offscreen.
• Adaptational Heroism: Lapis and Lazuli (Androids 17 & 18) are stated to be heroes in both timelines, and ally themselves with the Z-fighters immediately after they're freed.
  • Similarly, in the original canon, Hercule challenges Cell believing that his whole act is smoke and mirrors and challenges him because of ego. Here, Hercule knows how powerful Cell is and makes his challenge anyway, believing that people are counting on him.
  • Subverted with Vegeta. Vegeta accepts his son Trunks from the get-go, but we later find out this is only because he wants a powerful heir to continue his lineage. Thank Kami he grows out of it... Until he agrees to let Babidi possess him to bring out his full power.
• Adaptational Wimp: All of the androids are significantly weaker, to the point where they could be defeated by the humans, as Cell is the actual threat.
• Adapted Out: Oolong gets a passing mention in Chapter Four and is never seen in the story proper. Yajirobe is never even named, only briefly implied to be a guy who loses his katana to Krillin in a poker game.
  • The same applies to many of the movie-only villains. Tullece (Turles, from the Tree of Might movie) went to the Southern Universal Quadrant to avoid Freeza and is rarely brought up.
• Aliens Speaking English: Apparently, Galactic Basic is identical to English, which surprises both Earthling and Aliens.
• All of Them: Despite not using the exact phrase, Bulma makes it very clear at one point that she wants all the liquor.
  Bulma: Heidi, send up the liquor.
  Heidi: Which bottle, Ms. Bulma? Your family has a pretty extensive cellar.
  Bulma: The liquor, Heidi. Not some of it. Not a few bottles of it. The. Liquor.
  Heidi: R...rum or scotch or-
  Bulma: I'm not gonna say it again, Heidi!
• All Women Are Lustful: Bulma's mother Panchy is at least as obsessed with porn and sex in general as Master Roshi. She's notably disappointed to learn that the Namekians staying at Capsule Corp. lack genitalia. She also apparently possesses a massive porn stash.
• Always Chaotic Evil: Cooler lampshades that the Saiyans tend to be this.
  The idea that six good-hearted Saiyans could exist...
• And Zoidberg: Chiaotzu is pretty much treated similarly to the original series with how much attention he gets.
• Angry Guard Dog: Pilaf apparently had a squad of these worthy of Mr. Burns when he first encountered Goku.
• Anti-Climax: Suno lampshades as she's helping storm Muscle Tower that it is, mostly, not really that impressive (granted, she's doing it with Goku).
  Suno couldn't help but wonder how these people managed to terrorize them for half a year.
• Ascended Extra: Suno, Launch, Giran, and many other characters all have far more importance here than in the original Dragon Ball.
  • Originally, Suno was a minor character from the Red Ribbon Army arc in Jingle Village who helped Goku during the Muscle Tower arc. Here, she's a fighter in her own right, learns from Korin, and eventually becomes Goku's wife.
  • Launch becomes one of the Z-fighters herself, learns from Master Roshi, and has a Split-Personality Merge.
  • After a talk with Krillin during the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, Giran becomes a "leader" to the nonhuman population of Earth, and eventually is voted in as the next King of Earth.
  • While he originally was stated to be a former member of the Red Ribbon Army in canon, Dr. Gero appears much earlier in the story here, and has a great deal more characterization.
• Be Careful What You Wish For: The policeman who helps Goku and Suno find Capsule Corp when they arrive in West City asks Bulma's father, Dr. Briefs, to make his car go faster, since it's a Capsule Corp model. After Dr. Briefs is done with it, it goes faster than the speed of sound.
• Big "WHAT?!": Suno's reaction when Kami summons Goku to the Lookout.
• Black Comedy: In-Universe, Krillin darkly notices that Goku's cause of death is listed as "Assisted Suicide", with Cell as the "Assistant."
• Blunt "Yes":
  Vegeta: I spent enough time around Freeza to know when I am being condescended to. What are you implying, exactly, Kakarot? That you are simply that much more powerful than I?
  Goku: Yup! By a lot, actually.
  Vegeta is reduced to Stunned Silence.
• Bottomless Bladder: The bathing part of this trope is averted when Goku and Gohan... smell really bad after spending a year/day in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
• Call-Forward: When Freeza makes his Blasphemous Boast, Vegeta mistakes it for insecurity with this line:
  Vegeta: Your boasting, your posturing, your obsession with godhood! I know what it truly is! You hide your insecurity and your loathing that you shall never match the power of Beerus the Destroyer!
  Freeza: ...Who?
• Can't Catch Up: Downplayed, played straight, and discussed; those unable to keep up with the Saiyans generally keep up intense training, actually get stronger, and help where they can, which results in human Z-fighters contributing to and taking part in significantly more fights^note For example, Androids 13, 14, and 15 were killed by Yamaha and Chi-Chi, Launch, and Tenshinhan respectively.
• Chainsaw Good: Android 9 is practically the walking incarnation of this trope, complete with chainsaw hands, chainsaw missiles, backup hands made of chainsaw blades, and a pocket dimension inside it specifically added to hold those chainsaws.
• Color-Coded for Your Convenience/Only Known by Their Nickname: The Red Ribbon Army enforces this, with the rule apparently being that, after you join, you take a color as your name, and you aren't allowed to use your birth name.
• Conscription: Apparently, the Red Ribbon Army was fond of doing this in areas it conquered.
• Conservation of Competence: Defied - see Can't Catch Up, and the first note under For Want Of A Nail.
• Deadpan Snarker: While not quite a World of Snark, there are a lot of them.
• Death by Adaptation: The East Supreme Kai, Shin.
  • King Furry has a heart attack during the Saiyan attack, leading to the emergency parliamentary election that leads to Giran becoming king.
  • Hercule dies via Taking the Bullet, intercepting a fatal blow meant for Gohan. Downplayed example, as the Dragon Balls are used to revive him along with everyone else who was killed by Cell.
• Diabolus ex Machina: Goku loses the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai because a truck turned and she hit it a fraction of a second before Tenshinhan hit the ground. Pretty much just like canon.
• Didn't Think This Through:
  • Gohan basically cuts off all contact with his friends and family for several days in an effort not to worry about them about a new threat to the planet. Naturally, this makes them worried sick and has Videl in particular wondering if she did something wrong.
  • Pocus' belief that being on his homeworld with its higher gravity would give him an advantage is quickly disproved. As Vegeta explains, if it actually made a difference, Pocus would already be faster than him on Earth.
• Disappointed in You: The Supreme Kai says this to Vegeta about the Saiyan race as a whole, as they were created to be a Proud Warrior Race of galactic protectors, similar to what their Universe 6 counterparts are.
• The Dreaded: Beerus gets mentioned a few times, but he really becomes this during Cooler's POV chapter since avoiding his wrath is the biggest reason that King Cold and Cooler wanted Freeza out of the picture.
• Double Standard: In-universe; due to the Gender Bender Goku will sometimes be treated differently by other characters than they did in canon. For the few who assume her to be less important, this rarely lasts long.
• Early-Bird Cameo: Hercule appears as early as the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, determined to win (and getting crushed by Master Roshi/Jackie Chun), again at the 22nd (and this time running into Launch), and later the 23rd (where he was possessed by Kami and made it to the finals).
  • The Kaioushin, Beerus, Whis, and Zamasu are all mentioned or even appear well before their original appearances. Vegeta gets a mention as early as the Red Ribbon arc!
• Equal-Opportunity Evil: The Red Ribbon Army and the Freeza Force.
• Flat-Earth Atheist: Played straight and Averted with the Arcosians, as only their leaders are non-athiests. Cooler was taken to meet Beerus as a child specifically so that he would be able to comprehend the existence of a true higher power in a rationalist manner, and one of the secret duties of the Arcosian king is to ensure the rest of their race won't overstep their boundaries as mortals.
• For Want Of A Nail: All over the place, as it's how the story stays interesting. Very few changes come directly from the Gender Flip, most being the result of some smaller change, or some several smaller changes building up. The rest are mostly due to the writers averting Reed Richards Is Useless and/or thinking through how cases of Remember the New Guy? in canon would effect characters' actions in the past- such as Vegeta seeing a God of Destruction as a child, the legend of the Super Saiyan God, etc.
  • Everybody eventually develops better communication skills. Initially this is due to a long list of minor changes building up, then the characters who have learned to talk things out start setting an example for later characters, like Vegeta and the Androids, to follow.
    • Goku talked to Gohan beforehand about him taking on Cell, and he arrived at the tournament expecting to fight.
    • Lapis and Lazuli (Androids 17 and 18) are discovered to be brainwashed teenagers, befriended, protected, and never become threats to anyone.
    • Some storylines from the original are averted entirely thanks to characters communicating properly.
    • Goku tells Gohan that he's got the best chance of defeating Cell, and makes sure he's okay with that before sending him into the arena.
  • Future Trunks' backstory is very different than it was in canon. It starts like something far closer to a horror movie, with people mysteriously vanishing en masse instead of being slaughtered wholesale... and then Vegeta almost ( and by "almost" we mean "completely") kills Imperfect Cell. It takes five years before Cell returns to the past, via time machine, and by the time the end of the world gets started for real, plenty of things have changed.
  • Cooler is far more devious and cautious than in canon, due to being humbled by meeting Beerus as a child. It's hinted that the events of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' will feature Cooler as a result.
  • Vegeta realizes that the only reason he and the other Saiyans wore spandex is because it's the uniform of the PTO, so in celebration of Freeza's death, burns his old outfit and gets new clothes. This leads to him opening a clothing line and getting into the fashion industry. No, seriously.
  • In Chapter 90, Sorbet is incinerated by Vegeta's Final Flash after it's sent away from Earth, ensuring that the events of Resurrection F will never happen (or at least, not in the same way). Also, Bojack and Janemba were killed long before the series started by the Supreme Kai.
  • The Space Opera aspects of the fic are implied to come from Xi surviving instead of Shin. With more experience, she managed the universe better, and presumably this led to there being a much larger population in the galaxy, allowing for more infrastructure in galactic government and the like than canon.
• Gender Flip: Goku (obviously...), Recoome, Perfect Cell, and Goten are all female. Tullece/Turles is briefly mentioned to be a woman, though she doesn't appear on-screen.
• Groundhog Peggy Sue: Future Trunks's intention by coming back to the past. And in Chapter 90, Cell is revealed to have abused this. Big time.
• Hard Work Hardly Works: Revealed in Chapter 75 to be why Cooler hates Freeza – Cooler worked and trained for his entire life to get stronger, whereas Freeza was born Goo-Goo-Godlike, and was as strong as Cooler was after years of training without even having to work for it.
• Heel–Face Turn: After being killed by Piccolo Daimaou and wished back with the Dragon Balls, Shu, Mai, and Pilaf decide to become legit, with Shu and Pilaf opening a hot dog restaurant chain and Mai becoming a private detective.
• Homosexual Reproduction: Thanks to Bulma's drunken science, this became possible. It's also stated by Raditz that such technology isn't uncommon. Gohan and Goten are two known results from this.
• How Dare You Die on Me!: When Goku dies for good during the Cell Games, Vegeta shows up at her grave drunkenly ranting for daring to die. He goes on to say that he was meant to surpass her then she'd surpass him, both of them driving the other to ever greater heights. Vegeta even breaks down crying, demanding to know what he's supposed to do without her as his rival.
• Huge Girl, Tiny Guy: Downplayed: While he's hardly small, Yamcha is shorter than his wife Chi-Chi.
• I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder: The Supreme Kai would like you to remember that blowing things up is the job for the God of Destruction - whenever he gets off his lazy ass...
• I'm Going to Hell for This: While nothing ever comes of it, Bulma, after first meeting Goku, intends to use her to help gather the Dragon Balls by saying Goku could use them to wish back Grandpa Gohan... and then make her own wish instead. While she's stated and shown to feel rather guilty about this (especially after they get to know each other better), she initially intended to go through with it.
  Bulma had also had a rough time that night, wondering if the world's largest chocolate fountain was really worth going to Hell for.
• Innocent Innuendo: More like multiple-interpretation innuendo; a joke about Freiza's final form looking like "that thing (a woman) keeps in her drawer" means a tampon or a vibrator or a dildo, but whoever says the line is always trying to say something different than what whoever heard it thinks it means.
• Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Bulma and Suno both fail to pull open a door inside a cave while searching for a Dragonball and spot a hieroglyph that suggests they have to dance. They spend several minutes trying every dance they know, including dancing together, before they hit the door in a fit of rage and realize it was a push door. They both agree the entire situation never happened.
• Living MacGuffin: Lapis and Lazuli become this from the get-go during their arc, since Cell is the unopposed Big Bad and Future Trunks knew how Perfect Cell came to be.
• Mad Scientist: Bulma shamelessly admits that she is this, and it shows more than once. However, she's a (relatively) moral Mad Scientist, especially when compared to Dr. Gero.
• Make Me Wanna Shout: Present Trunks was strong enough as an infant to cause minor earthquakes by yelling when he was upset.
• Make Wrong What Once Went Right: It turns out that Main Timeline Cell originally came from a timeline where she won, and has been doing this for the past 50 years after leaving it.
• Mama Bear: Goku usually likes to have a good time when she's fighting, even against a deadly enemy. However, when her family is threatened, she will drop the smiles and get serious.
• Mass "Oh, Crap!": When Goku arrives at the Red Ribbon Army's main base with combat on the brain, they (understandably) panic.
• Mistaken for Cheating: Videl, after learning what has been bothering Gohan, admits that she just thought she was being cheated on. Later on, Present Trunks sees Xi and Gohan teleporting off together and audibly makes the assumption that Gohan is two-timing Videl, much to Goten's anger and Piccolo's annoyance.
• Mook Horror Show: Parts of Goku's assault on Red Ribbon Army headquarters are shown from the soldiers' point of view and they're all terrified from the moment she appears.
• Mundane Solution: At one point, Blonde Launch keeps herself from changing back mid-battle by wearing a dust mask so she won't sneeze.
• My Kung-Fu Is Stronger Than Yours: It's Dragon Ball. There will always be examples of that.
• Named by the Adaptation: The Kaioushins all have names (Shin has a different name than canon):
  North: Bei
  South: Nan
  East/Shin: Dong
  West: Xi
  Grand Supreme Kai/Daikaioushin: Shengda
  Elder Kai: Pracya
• Non-Indicative Name: General Blue lampshades that the Red Ribbon Army doesn't always have names that make sense in its "code."
  He peered over the edge of his magazine at a barrel-shaped boar man with purple fur. Sergeant... Mauve, was it? Really his fur was more of a Maroon, but Private Maroon was also in his troop. Funnily enough, he was a panda. But such was the lot of the color coordination in the Red Ribbon Army.
• Noodle Incident: Apparently North Kaiou's planet used to be much bigger before he did something to upset Beerus. All he mentions about it was that Beerus is a sore loser.
• No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: Bulma was incredibly drunk when she designed the machine that allowed Goku and Suno to practice Homosexual Reproduction, and forgot how she made it after waking up (much to her frustration).
• Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: At first, Dr. Gero seems like he wants the best for humanity, and seemingly created Cell to defend Earth from alien invaders, and hated Goku because she destroyed the Red Ribbon Army, his main source of funding (as well as Commander Red being a friend of his). However, he's entirely too willing to "purge" some of humanity due to his belief that the world cannot sustain a continually-booming population, and a computer download of his personality claims that he intended to have Cell eliminate humanity from the start and replace the population with Cell Jrs. Whether A.I. Is a Crapshoot occurred, or the original Gero suffered Motive Decay, is unclear.
• O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Vegeta is so distraught over Goku's death that he not only gets completely drunk, but also breaks down crying as he yells at her grave for dying on him.
• Our Werebeasts Are Different: Goku and Gohan both essentially revert to their "primal" instincts during the Oozaru transformation.
• Police Are Useless: Subverted – while they're not much use in the fights present in this series (understandably), a policeman helps guide Goku and Suno to Capsule Corp the first time they arrive in West City.
• Poor Communication Kills: Defied very thoroughly. See For Want Of A Nail.
  • Also defied when Gohan gets picked to fight Boo- the Supreme Kai telepathically contacts him to explain the situation beforehand, instead of just showing up at the tournament. This one stems from Xi having more experience than Shin.

• Reed Richards Is Useless: Averted. Bulma becomes the richest and most powerful woman in the world by reverse-engineering the technology used to create the Androids and applying it to safer, more practical inventions- she literally fixes the energy crisis with that stuff and advances Earth's medicine by centuries.
  • Capsule Corp fixes the massive impact that blowing up the moon would have on the Earth by making a fake one that can't trigger Saiyan transformation.
  • The cast no longer has to rely on the unpredictable growth patterns of Senzu Beans for their super-fast healing, thanks to Bulma's new nanite-based medicines (though they don't show up till the Boo arc).
  • Yamcha and Chichi use their powers to make a living via their mercenary hero service "Ox and Wolf" where they help people with kidnappings, natural disasters, and the like. At least until Gohan becomes the Great Saiyaman and puts them out of business.
• "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Goku gives one to Majin Vegeta, having hit her Rage Breaking Point over Vegeta's fixation on his pride and surpassing her:
  Goku: Oh, will you shut up?! I'm so sick of this! All you ever talk about is your Saiyan pride! How you were meant to be the strongest, how you were meant to be better than me! That's the craziest thing, Vegeta, you were stronger than me! I had to multiply my strength four times to be stronger than you, and I still needed Gohan, Krillin, and Suno's help to beat you! But I didn't let it bother me! You wanna know why? Because I never took anything for granted! I never just assumed that I was the best! I'm glad Freeza blew up our stupid planet! Because otherwise, I might have grown up to be a coward like you! [...] What else would you call it? What would you call it when the second life goes any way other than exactly how you think it's supposed to, you start to have a crisis? What do you call it when your life is validated by being strong enough to do whatever you want and falling apart when suddenly that changes? [points to the Majin tattoo on Vegeta] What do you call taking the easy way out when things got hard? [...] Do you want to know why I let you live? Not just because you were strong. Not just because I wanted to fight you again so that I could prove I could beat you on my own. But because somewhere, deep down, I knew that you could have been more than what you were. That there wasn't that much separating what I could have been from what you were. I wanted to give you the chance to better yourself, to prove me right. But if this is all you are... I should've just let Krillin kill you.
• Running Gag: The fact that Bulma's artificial no-Oozaru-transformation moon has her face on it keeps being brought up by aliens seeing it for the first time.
  • Cooler having to stop whatever he's doing to go back to training every time someone transforms into a new form of Super Saiyan.
• Secret Test of Character: While they were dating, Chi-Chi mentions to Yamcha offhand that anyone who marries her would inherit her father's title and fortune. He shrugs it off with a "neat" and continues giving her a massage, causing Chi-Chi to decide to marry him.
• Shamu Fu: When Yamcha is eliminated in the preliminaries of the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, Bulma (who recently broke up with him) laughs at him, leading to Puar turning into a fish to smack her.
• Ship Tease: It's all but outright stated that Raditz and Zarbon were lovers before the former's death here.
  • There's also quite a bit of Ship Tease early on with Krillin and Goku, with Bulma even seemingly actively playing Shipper on Deck before Suno enters the picture.
  • A Running Gag is Vegeta assuming that others are trying to forge an Arranged Marriage between Goten and Trunks.
• Shout-Out: Oh so many, mostly to Dragon Ball Z Abridged or Hellsing Ultimate Abridged.
  • When General Blue continuously refers to himself as The Übermensch, Bulma remarks, "You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means."
    • Much later, Gohan tells Dende, "Let me explain. No, there's too much. Let me sum up."
  • Goku and Suno's neighbors, the Smiths, are for all intents and purposes, the Dursleys. They're even named Petunia and Vernon.
  • During their first fight, Vegeta calls Goku an "impudent, contemptuous whore!"
  • The "Do you feel that/I taste that" exchange happens.
  • Krillin manages to remember his Destructo Disc several times, even killing Recoome with it.
  • In Chapter 79, Vegeta watches what appears to be Dragon Ball's interpretation of "Curse of the Black Pearl."
  • Tensinhan roars "DOOOOOORARARARARARARA!" as he's beating Android 14 with the Kaioken Times 4. Which actually doubles as a Shout-Out In-Universe, as Ten is a massive JoJo fan.
  • When Trunks comes back to warn everyone about Gero/The Androids/Cell, he brings a "goddamn photo".
  • Most things to do with the backstory of Lapis and Lazuli are references to Steven Universe.
  • The line "Kaiouwha–?" gets dropped by Android 13 right before Yamcha nails him. He also says, "Now y'gone and did it... I've lost mah trucker hat!"
  • To Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths when Goku is fighting the Majinized Vegeta.
    Goku: "So is this the strategy you've developed in the last seven years? Talking me to death? Because I hate to tell ya, that's gonna be a pro–"
    Vegeta: "Actually, Kakarot, I thought I'd beat you to death."
  • The Cell Jr. are based on Super Sentai. A red one named Geki, a blue one named Dan, a pink one named Mei, a black one named Goushi, a yellow one named Boy, and a white one named Kou.
    • Boy is a female instead of male. While in keeping with the story's theme, it is also reminiscent of something else.
• The Social Darwinist: Aside from the Saiyans, the Arcosians are also revealed to be this (or at least, Freeza's family is). Surprisingly, they're actually civil about it – King Cold was entirely accepting of the idea that Cooler might one day overthrow him and kill him.
  • However, both of them drew the line at Freeza killing them and taking over, because both of them knew that Freeza's ego and A God Am I beliefs would not allow him to coexist with Beerus, who Cooler and Cold knew might destroy the entire Arcosian Empire if Freeza tried to attack him.
• Space Opera: One difference from the show is that while the original had space be filled with Amusing Aliens and little consistency, the world of Monkey Queen has a large and intricate galaxy as the background. The audience doesn't get to see much of it since the plot is usually on Earth or backwaters like Namek, but what does show up is generally consistent, like The Galactic Patrol harassing the PTO after Freeza and King Cold die, putting Cooler on the defensive and giving him a reason to delay his visit to Earth.
• Spared by the Adaptation: Cooler never goes to Earth and lives as a result, and the West Supreme Kai, Xi, was the Sole Survivor of the Kaioushins instead of the East Supreme Kai Shin.
  • Adrian/Android 16 lives with Lapis/Android 17 and his family. Kinda a subversion, as instead of not dying he just got revived after his death thanks to Bulma making back-ups of his hard drive.
• Square-Cube Law: Piccolo growing to giant size also slows him down because he has to spend far more energy to move.
  • The Oozaru forms subvert this because the ki levels of the Saiyans using it rise by a factor of 10 when they use it.
• Talking Is a Free Action: Typically, this is averted or subverted.
  • When Sergeant Indigo is monologing, Goku hits him in the head with a rock. Twice.
  • The Klingon Promotion appointed Black tries to talk, but Suno is having none of that.
    Commander Black: I am Commander Black of the Red Ribbon Army and–
    Suno: [leaps at him with a flying kick] You don't get a monologue!
  • Vegeta is interrupted mid-sentence multiple times by the Z-fighters as he's trying to rant instead of killing them.
  • When Freeza decides to transform into his final form before killing Gohan, Suno, Krillin, and Vegeta, they try to stall for time so Goku can have more time to heal.
• Trademark Clothing: Baby Trunks enforces this on himself. If you try to take his favorite hat, he will shatter your surroundings until it is returned.
• Wasteful Wishing: When Bulma first set out to find the Dragon Balls, she didn't have a set wish but all her ideas were either mundane and something she could easily purchase given her wealth (a basket of strawberries, a chocolate fountain, etc), or just silly (an umbrella that rained gumdrops when opened, a bubble bath that turned the water into diamonds). Ironically, she rejects the idea of wishing for the perfect boyfriend because she's rich and could buy one.
• What Measure Is a Mook?: Averted – in the Red Ribbon Army arc, two of their jet pilots are given a brief introduction – that is, before Goku smashes their planes for shooting at her, Bulma, and Suno.
• Why Won't You Die?: Sergeant Metallic (due to being a robot) doesn't die when his head is blown off, or his chest is blown up, or when he sacrifices one of his arms for a Rocket Punch, much to Suno's frustration.
• The World Is Always Doomed: Piccolo sums the whole trope up nicely in Chapter 115.
  Piccolo: So. The end of the world again, huh?
• Worthy Opponent: Piccolo Daimou admits that Goku is this to him after she comes back to fight him the second time.
