This is the character sheet for Mario, Luigi & Gary. The plentiful surprising cameos are one of the game's major draws, so proceed with caution. Spoilers abound.
Main Characters
The main playable cast.
The hero of the game, Gary accidentally ends up in the Mushroom World after stumbling through a dimensional warp in his toilet. Tasked by Rosalina with learning magic, he joins the Mario Bros. on a journey to save the Mushroom World from the evil influence of The Dark Star.
- Baldness Angst: Despite being fairly young, Gary has a bald spot that he's quite eager to cover up.
- Camp Gay: Gary is upbeat and not averse to flirting with various men throughout the game.
- Grease Monkey: Worked as an auto mechanic before being transported to the Mushroom Kingdom. He gets to demonstrate this know-how when he helps Spitz and Dribble fix up their flying taxi.
- Goomba Stomp: Subverted. Unlike every other overall-wearing party member in the game, he can't jump at all!
- Insistent Terminology: Gary's main special attack is called "Violet Laser," even though it's clearly pink.
- Jumped at the Call: Does not hesitate when Rosalina asks him to train to become a hero.
- Meaningful Name: Gerardo Stewart/ Gary Stu.
- Naïve Newcomer: Gary is new to the Mushroom Kingdom, and oblivious to both its delights and dangers.
- Naked First Impression: He arrives at Mario and Luigi's house in nothing but his underwear. This necessitates him borrowing the overalls and white shirt (that was accidentally dyed pink) that make him look like an additional Mario Brother.
- Parody Sue: His full name is Gerardo Stewart, and he serves as the player's avatar. This is occasionally commented on by other characters, one of whom scoffs that Gary at least isn't a recolor.
- Swiss-Army Superpower: His pink powers can create Hard Light, and have many uses, such as creating platforms to surf on.
- White Mage: Acts as healer for the party.
Protagonist of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, Mario is a plumber with an affinity for heroism. He appears again here as a playable character.
- Goomba Stomp: His other signature move, he stomps on Goombas, and anything else that doesn't have spikes.
- Heroic Mime: As in the official games, he only speaks in stock sound bites, and never in text. Sticks out a bit more here as this continues even when you aren't playing as him.
- The Hero: While sharing the protagonist role with Gary, he's still considered the party lead whenever he's on board.
Mario's less famous younger brother, tasked with showing Gary around while Mario is busy.
- Ambiguously Gay/Bi Whether this is the case is not confirmed, but Susan seems to suspect so, given she will never attempt her charm attack against him during battle.
- Dude, Where's My Respect?: As is usual for the franchise, many have trouble remembering Luigi's name.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: His famous fear of ghosts returns here. Rather unfortunate that among the first things he has to do is escort Gary through a Haunted House.
The hero of Donkey Kong 3, who leaves behind his peaceful life tending his greenhouse to join Gary's perilous quest.
- Closet Key: According to Word of God, Gary acted as this for him, as he hadn't met many human men before who weren't in his immediate family.
- Disgusting Vegetarian Food: Stanley's a vegetarian, which leads him to order a pizza with meatless balls.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: In an optional scene, he suggests to Gary that it might be fun to touch fuzzy and get dizzy on purpose.
- Master Poisoner: Knows how to mix various poisons for pest extermination, and battle.
- Poison Is Evil: Subverted. Stanley uses poison in combat, but is a pacifist, and among the friendliest characters in the game.
A witch hailing from the WarioWare series, Ashley serves as Gary's unwilling mentor, and the spellcaster of the party.
- Black Mage: Is the offensive spellcaster of the party, specializing in crowd-clearing elemental attacks.
- Bragging Theme Tune: Her famous theme song is imported from her original game, and plays during a few key moments. She's also fond of reminding people that she's "the greatest." Stanley remarks that there's even a song about how "she's the cruelest girl you'll ever meet."
- Casting a Shadow: Her Ztarwhirl attack bombards enemies with shadows.
- Dark Is Not Evil: Is a creepy witch who uses black magic, and one of the heroes of the game. (Well, maybe she's a smidge evil...)
- Deadpan Snarker: Sees herself as above it all, and is never without a cutting remark about the stupidity around her.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: Gradually becomes nicer (or at least less mean) as the game goes on, especially towards Gary.
- Hidden Depths: Gary accurately guesses that she pushes people away due to a fear of attachment.
- Older Than They Look: Confesses to Gary that she's older than she appears. Exactly how much older is not revealed.
- Squishy Wizard: A spellcaster, and likely has the lowest HP of the party. Her basic attack is also a simple whack with her magic wand that deals barely any damage.
- Would Hurt a Child: Downplayed. While she doesn’t hurt any herself, Jr. Troopa excepted, she remarks that she enjoys seeing children get punished.
Supporting Characters
Some of the many characters that help or hinder Gary, mostly from around the Super Mario canon.
Originally from Super Mario Galaxy, Rosalina appears here as The Mentor to Gary, The Chooser of the One, and a representative of the mystical Eternal Star; the magical force that grants the Mushroom Kingdom's wishes.
- Astral Projection: Can project an illusion of herself to speak to people on the ground, without ever having to leave Star Haven. This seems to be limited to an altar on the summit of Shooting Star Summit, however.
- Big Good: Rosalina is second only to the Eternal Star in the Marioverse's pecking order.
- Physical God: Ashley states that she could be considered a goddess in the Mushroom World.
Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, and beloved of Mario.
- Damsel in Distress: Shockingly, Peach is kidnapped by Bowser during the course of the game.
- Princess Classic: As in her origin series, she is one of the most emblematic examples of this trope. A pure and beautiful princess.
- Universally Beloved Leader: An absolute monarch, and very popular with her subjects. This reputation takes a nose-dive after she's impersonated by Susan.
Originally from Super Mario Sunshine, Toadsworth is the royal steward of Princess Peach.
- Nervous Wreck: Frequently seen fretting over Peach's well-being.
- Old Retainer: Once again serves this role for Peach, taking charge of such duties as vetting visitors seeking an audience with her.
- Patchwork Fic: As is popular in fanfic, Toadsworth is referred to with the title of Chancellor. The same as a Toad that acted as ruler in Peach's place when she was kidnapped in Super Mario RPG.
A family of mystics originating in the Paper Mario series. Many of them tell fortunes. "But not for free!"
- Canon Foreigner: Almost all of the members of the Merlon family come from canon games. But the mysterious Merloker that runs a creepy store doesn't seem to belong.
- Rhymes on a Dime: (Almost) everything Merlee says is in rhyme.
- Maiden, Mother, and Crone: Some of the female members of the family appear as boss fights during Ashley's quest to complete the Rod of Elders. Coincidentally or not, the slew of bosses include a young Maiden, a mystic of Motherly age, and a ghostly Crone.
- Demoted to Extra: Was a playable party member in Paper Mario 64. Appears here only in a small recurring role doing his designated job.
- Flying Postman: Uses his wings to deliver mail faster.
- Goggles Do Nothing: He always wears a pair of aviator goggles on his head, but keeps them above his eyes, even when flying.
A young Goomba that once traveled with Mario in Paper Mario 64, and his new friend, Bobby Boo. Goombario helps Mario with an offscreen quest as his most loyal travelling partner, and Bobby acts as a guide for Gary and Luigi through the creepy Forever Forest.
- Canon Foreigner: Bobby Boo didn't appear in the original franchise, but acts as Goombario's friend here.
- Exposition Fairy: While Goombario has been Demoted to Extra and doesn't serve this role here, his talkative nature echoes his advice-giving role from Paper Mario 64. His father mentions that Goombario's told him all about certain subjects... in great detail.
- Hero Worship: He's as fond of Mario as ever, and thrilled with having the chance to fight alongside him again in a mostly off-screen quest.
- Took a Level in Badass: Having been one of the primary heroes of Paper Mario 64, he's earned a respectable reputation and is trusted as Mario's only partner in an off-screen quest.
Returning from Paper Mario 64, Lady Bow and her loyal butler Bootler are recognized as nobility among the ghosts.
- Abhorrent Admirer: Bow makes some very much unwanted advances on the very much not-interested Gary. Bootler is horrified at her lack of decorum.
- Ghost Butler: Bootler is this, loyally serving his Lady Bow.
- Haunted House: The two live in and preside over a haunted mansion, with plenty of ghosts to keep them company.
- Paper Fan of Doom: Once used as a weapon, now it's used merely to accentuate Bow's Noblewoman's Laugh.
- Asshole Victim: Ashley only cares about him being kicked out of his castle for practical reasons. Gary, not knowing his ghost-eating past, is much more sympathetic.
- Demoted to Extra: Once a threatening boss, he now serves a small role as a victim of home invasion. Gary's sure he couldn't have been all that bad before.
- Gentle Giant: Fulfilling his promise from Paper Mario 64 to be good, he's become very docile.
Returning from Paper Mario 64, Chan, Lee, and The Master serve much the same role here, as optional bosses in Toad Town.
- Golden Super Mode: The Master's yellow-robed battle form returns here from his original appearance.
- Old Master: The Master is an older and very powerful martial artist.
- Superboss: You don't need to fight any of them to progress through the game, but you're in for quite a challenge if you do.
A trio of adventurers debuting in Paper Mario 64, the group returns here to investigate Dry Dry Desert's ruins.
- Adventurer Archaeologist: Kolorado was always this, and now Kooper and Bombette have joined his ruin exploration.
- Braids of Action: Bombette is an explorer of dangerous ruins, and wears her fuse as a braid.
- Non-Fatal Explosions: As always, Bombette is just fine after exploding. Subverted when captured by King Kumulus, as exploding might have dissipated the cloud they were standing on, sending her party plummeting to their deaths.
A Pirate that made her debut in the Wario Land series. The party must rely on her trustworthy help to cross the sea.
- Continuity Nod: Finally gets her hand on the golden Peach statue she coveted in Wario Land!
- Greed: Like her rival Wario, money and treasure are her primary motivations.
- Robinsonade: She shows little remorse in marooning the party on a low-technology island.
A player from the Mario Golf series. Here, he and other humans from the Mario Sports titles appear as residents of Diamond City.
- Ambiguously Gay: An optional post card features him offering to take Gary out for dinner.
- Third-Person Person: As in his origin series, "The Gene" is fond of referring to himself by his own name.
- Trophy Room: Chooses to greet the party in his trophy room in order to indirectly show them off. Ashley calls him out on this.
The cast of the WarioWare series are represented in full here, residing in Diamond City and being coworkers of Ashley.
- Fetch Quest: Many of them are the victims of theft, and ask that you help return their stolen items.
- Grease Monkey: Spitz and Dribble run a taxi service, and can be seen maintaining a car.
- Supreme Chef: Mona's pizza is so delicious, it can restore HP and FP to full.
- Continuity Nod: While he has no occasion to catch ghosts during the game, he has computer monitors that display pictures of ghost enemies, implying he still hunts them.
- Gadgeteer Genius: Responsible for the technology in Luigi's various Poltergust models, and in Stanley's bug sprayer.
- Intergenerational Friendship: One of the first things he does when visited by Mario is to ask how the much younger Luigi is doing.
A Star Kid that previously aided Peach in Paper Mario 64.
- Pajama-Clad Hero: This time around, he wears what appears to be a night cap to differentiate him from other star kids.
- Sentient Stars: Not unusual for the Mario series, he's a star that can talk.
- Took a Level in Badass: Twink's deeds in Paper Mario 64 have been remembered, and he's been promoted high up the celestial chain for his heroism.
Originally appearing as a board in Mario Party, The Eternal Star appears here as a mysterious force that grants wishes.
- God Is Neutral: Rosalina describes the Eternal Star as a neutral force that will grant the wishes of people, regardless of whether they're good or evil.
- God of Light: A glowing deity opposed by the shadowy Dark Star.
- Save Your Deity: The most powerful being in the Mushroom Universe, but still vulnerable to attack from the Dark Star.
Villains and Bosses.
Bad guys or Brainwashed and Crazy obstacles that Gary must overcome. Beware, following are some of the biggest spoilers. You have been warned.
The recurring nemesis of Mario and persecutor of Peach. No surprise, he's back with another evil plan that involves kidnapping her.
- Ass Kicks You: His signature move Bowser Bomb makes an appearance here. He uses it to descend on his victims with his sizable thighs.
- But Not Too Evil: He may kidnap Peach and try to overthrow the Mushroom Kingdom, but he draws the line at colluding with the Dark Star to being about an Apocalypse How.
- Dishing Out Dirt: He can call up stone spikes from underneath his opponents with a flick of his finger.
- Enemy Mine: During the final battle, he'll provide assistance in the form of additional attacks against the Dark Star.
- A Father to His Men: Literally, in the case of his Koopaling underlings. Less literally, he shows paternal care for the well-being of his followers. He even goes to great lengths to save Susan from being manipulated by the Dark Star.
- Shout-Out: To this very wiki! Bowser of all people seems to be a troper, describing Susan as a Psycho for Hire in those exact words!
Right hand wizard of Bowser, Kamek first appeared in Yoshi's Island, and returns here as an enforcer of Bowser's latest evil plan.
- Co-Dragons: He's always been Bowser's right hand man, but he now seems to share that role with Susan.
- Evil Sorcerer: Wields magic to bully enemies of Bowser.
- Make My Monster Grow: As always, a favorite tactic of Kamek.
A bratty bully from Paper Mario 64, Jr. Troopa returns for another Roaring Rampage of Revenge across the Mushroom Kingdom, stalking who he believes to be Mario wherever he goes.
- Bait-and-Switch Boss: If you provoke his revenge quest near the beginning of the game, he'll interrupt a late-game battle with Lemmy to fight you himself.
- Bratty Half-Pint: Small, check. Entitled, check.
- Mistaken Identity: Insists that Gary is Mario. When they're side by side, he becomes convinced there are two Marios!
- Optional Boss: It's possible to avoid ever meeting him in the first place, forgoing his many battles throughout the game.
- Recurring Boss: If battled near the beginning of the game, he'll continue to harass you for the rest of it.
A monster residing within a treasure chest that resembles the Pandorite enemy from Super Mario RPG.
- Chest Monster: A textbook example, a treasure chest that fights.
- Don't Wake the Sleeper: Wants to be left alone, and will violently lash out at anyone who wakes it.
- Wake-Up Call Boss: He's considerably stronger than any previous threat, and may be the first boss that forces players to Level Grind.
A sorceress who leads a Cult themed on the Phanto enemies from Super Mario Bros. 2.
- Cool Mask: Wears a mask resembling the Phantos she commands, and is never seen without it.
- Cult: Her followers address her with "Lady," wear robes and masks matching her Phanto theme, and decorate their stolen castle with her emblem.
- Enemy Summoner: Spawns Phantos to aid her in battle.
Originally appearing as an optional mini-boss in Paper Mario 64, Buzzar returns here with an expanded role.
- Ambiguous Gender: As in the original game, Buzzar presents rather masculine, but can be seen raising chicks like a mother.
- Corporal Punishment: Threatens to "Kentucky fry" their children for wandering into danger. This seems to be an idle threat.
- Feather Flechettes: Uses feathers to attack.
A cloudy king with an evil plot to flood Dry Dry Desert with an endless rain.
- Cumulonemesis: Befitting his name, he is a living cloud with a penchant for villainy.
- Expy : Of Huff N' Puff.
- King Mook: Rules over cloud-themed enemies that resemble him.
Originally a boss in Yoshi's Island and given a more sympathetic role in Paper Mario 64, Raphael returns here to fulfill both roles.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Provides a boss fight as a victim of the Dark Star's brainwashing.
- Turns Red: Turns red with fury for the entire duration of his battle. Calms down significantly after his defeat.
- Verbal Tic: He usually acts as though he's communicating via a walkie talkie, saying Raphael is his "call sign" rather than his name, and finishing some statements with "over."
Four masked members of the Reznor specie that debuted in Super Mario World. Here, they preside over an invasion of Yoshi's Island.
- Cool Mask: Distinguishes them from other Reznor.
- Funetik Aksent: All four speak in this. Their funny accents seem to be different from one another, as well.
- Shout-Out: The red one will call down meteors when defeated, like the Behemoths in the Final Fantasy series.
A goofy scientist from the WarioWare series.
- Beware the Silly Ones: A comic relief character even by the standards of the game he originated from, here, he is one of the most dangerous bosses of all!
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Another victim of the Dark Star.
- Freeze Ray: One of his primary modes of attack.
Mario's greedy rival and founder of WarioWare Inc.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Another victim of the Dark Star's manipulations.
- Corrupt Corporate Executive: He's this at the best of times, but when The Dark Star gets involved, it gets much, much worse.
- Fartillery: As in the parent series, Wario can use a variant on his Wario Waft attack.
A minor boss from Super Mario Galaxy, Kamella returns in a somewhat larger role as a chapter boss.
- Enemy Summoner: Not only can she summon Mooks, she summons mooks that summon other mooks!
- Taken for Granite: Turns poor Toadsworth to stone for being "whiny."
- The Unfought: Subverted. It looks like she's going to be this after Goombario mentions defeating her off-screen, but she comes back for another battle.
- Wicked Witch: Wears a traditional witch's hat, and menaces enemies with cruel spells.
The seven children of Bowser, and some of his strongest minions.
- Cool Airship: Morton and Larry have flying ships with their own faces as figure heads. The former's is named "F.S. Big Mouth," in homage to his alternate name from the DiC cartoons.
- Magic Wand: As is usual for the series, several of them wield these in their battles.
- Shout-Out: To the DiC Super Mario cartoons. Their names from that series are occasionally dropped here as nicknames, "Big Mouth, etc," and they tend to refer to Bowser as "King Dad."
The village headman of Shady Shire, and an optional boss.
- Expy: Of Slenderman, though much chattier than his source of inspiration. Some of his attacks even use the creepy radio static sounds from Slender.
- Humanoid Abomination: Lenzy is much creepier than anything else in Mario's typically Sugar Bowl setting.
- Soundtrack Dissonance: While most of the music in the game is synth music taken from the Mario series and other classic games, Lenzy borrows his boss theme from Mephiles of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). With its electric guitar mixed with Ominous Latin Chanting and agonized throat-sounds, it's unlike anything else in the game. It lends to the disturbing feeling that Lenzy does not belong.
- The Rival: Ashley considers him this, offended that he might think his dark powers are greater than hers.
Gary's former coworker, who held an accounts and finances position at the auto shop where he worked. She accidentally follows him into the Mushroom Kingdom, where she joins Bowser in hope of making Gary hers.
This character is a Walking Spoiler, proceed with caution.
- 0% Approval Rating: Her oppressive reign disguised as Princess Peach is despised by her Toad subjects. Even Bowser and several of his minions find her unpleasant.
- Abhorrent Admirer: Incompatible Orientation isn’t the only reason Gary isn’t interested. He he also finds her vindictive personality intolerable. To the point where he considered avoiding her one of the top perks of being trapped in another dimension.
- All There in the Manual: The creator's DeviantArt page contains an illustration rendering her name as Susan-Maria.
- Dark Messiah: She's chosen as a representative of the Dark Star, to help it destroy the Mushroom Kingdom.
- Evil Costume Switch: After making a deal with the Dark Star and joining Bowser, she obtains a sinister princess dress resembling an evil version of Peach’s. She does this again in the penultimate battle, with a Hotter and Sexier thigh-bearing outfit.
- Evil Counterpart: to Princess Peach. Her princess dress has a similar but more sinister design, and she even sets out to replace Peach, changing her castle in her own likeness. She also acts as this to Gary, both being humans transported to the Mushroom Kingdom from New York by the Warp Nexus. While he is chosen to represent Rosalina and the Eternal Star, she is chosen to represent the Dark Star. And while Gary uses pink-colored magic from the Rose Morning Star medallion he wears on his chest, she wears a fragment of the Dark Star as a brooch, which enables her to use dark-colored spells.
- Evil Is Petty: The Warp Nexus brought her to the Mushroom Kingdom through a toilet. She considers this indignity sufficient justification to bring the whole kingdom to ruin.
- Gameplay and Story Integration: She will only ever use her charm spell on Mario. Presumably because he’s the only opponent she can reliably assume to be interested in women.
- Hotter and Sexier: While not overly explicit, her “Dominate” technique is a little risqué compared to the general E-rated tone of the game. She’ll only use it on Mario, implying it requires compatible sexual orientation to work. Her creepy Stalker Shrine, which contains shirtless portraits of Gary, is even worse.
- Jumped at the Call: An evil example. She shows no hesitation in joining Bowser and making a deal with the Dark Star.
- Incompatible Orientation: Pursues Gary despite this. It doesn’t help that he also finds her personality repellant.
- Noblewoman's Laugh: Her laugh sound bite isn’t quite this, but the fact that she accentuates it by displaying a folding fan definitely calls this trope to mind.
- Opposites Attract: Admires Gary because his bright and cheerful personality is the polar opposite of her own. The feeling is NOT mutual.
- Punch-Clock Villain: Decides to become this if Gary stays in the ending.
- Psycho for Hire: Bowser refers to her as this with these exact words.
- Stalker Shrine: She imprisons Luigi in a room that contains several portraits and icons of Gary, including shirtless ones. How she obtained these is never addressed.
- Stalker with a Crush: Will stop at nothing to claim Gary as her own. In fact, before being dragged to the mushroom kingdom, she had been in the middle of breaking into his home.
- Throne Room Throwdown: Defied. When asked why she doesn’t sit in a throne, she claims they cause “secretary spread.”
- Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: She describes Bowser’s complicated plan to have her replace Peach as idiotic, and favors the direct route of defeating Mario and Luigi through force of numbers. Ultimately, Kamek convinces her to go through with the long-winded plan after all.
- Yandere: Psychotically infatuated with Gary, and not above using violence to make him hers. Although she seems to lack even the pretension of sweetness that tends to accompany this trope.
A seemingly friendly Toad that greets Susan after her arrival in the Mushroom World. Actually Gultrefer, a minion of The Dark Star that specializes in illusions. This character is a Walking Spoiler.
- Master of Illusion: Masks his true form with the guise of a normal (if seedy-looking) Toad. He also creates illusions designed to isolate and torment the party.
- Morton's Fork: Asks the party leading questions about their life choices. He'll twist their answers against them no matter how they respond.
- Psychological Torment Zone: Inflicts one of these on the party to bar their path to the final boss, showing them illusions designed to target their deepest insecurities.
- Shut Up, Hannibal!: If Ashley is in your party, she'll easily shrug off his attempts to use her loneliness against her.
- The Corrupter: Leads Susan down the path of evil. Not that he needed to try very hard...
Originally appeared as the final antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Here, that appearance has been retconned as merely being a fragment and avatar of a much larger whole.
- As Long as There Is Evil: Rosalina says this almost word for word regarding it. It's born from and nourished by the negativity in the Mushroom World, and will always be reborn. It can only be fought back, not destroyed.
- Bad Ending: It graces the Game Over screen, implying its victory should the party fail.
- Combat Tentacles: All of its forms can wield shadowy tentacles to entrap opponents.
- Climax Boss: The Dark Star is relentless in its attacks, spawning tentacles and removing your immunity to status effects before inflicting several of them. The scope of the fight is helped by assistance from Bowser and Susan, in the form of attacks and healing items.
- Retcon: According to a scholarly Toad NPC, the final boss of Bowser’s Inside Story was merely a fragment of its true self, making it even more monstrous than it was in that game.
- The Chooser of the One: Selects Susan as its Dark Messiah.
- The Voiceless: The Dark Star speaks only in unearthly, guttural growls. Only Susan can understand it, and she finds it rude.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: It turns on Susan shortly before the final battle.
